SSD upgrade for imac

i am using a 2011 imac 21.5", is there any possible way to add a SSD to the current configuration by going to apple authorised stores. i dont want it to be done by some randow guy in a store, coz i have read articles of many unsatisfied customer complaintsw

You'll have to call your local Apple store to see if they'll do that upgrade, or a local Apple Authorized Service Provider. Otherwise, another option would be to send it to OWC and they'll install an SSD (they have a program to do that here).

  • Processor Upgrade for iMac G3

Hello, I didn't see any particular posts specifically pertaining to the slot loading iMac (Graphite)..I hope someone can help me out.
I have a G3 Graphite iMac, upgraded RAM currently running Tiger. I used to use it but wiped it clean, re-installied the OS and created a separate account for my 8y/o son, so essentially there aren't many apps on there. For some reason it's running slower than it should, even with just Safari open. Is there a fix or possibly a processor upgrade for this model (I keep seeing that there isn't, but I want to be sure).
It's either that or constantly hearing my son complain of the lagtime and ask for our laptops instead...

According to Mactracker at one point there was a 700 MHz model available in Graphite & Snow. If you could find a 700 MHz G3 CRT iMac logic board on eBay it might be possible to upgrade the processor speed. You could also install a Matshita SR-8184 or SR-8186 DVD-ROM drive.
There's firmware available for both drives that allow them to be flashed to RPC1 or region free meaning they can play DVDs from any region in the world. Normally the drive is restricted to being able to only play Region 3 DVDs from the US. If you order a Matshita SR-8184CD optical drive from www.welovemacs.com call their 800 number listed on their website & be sure to ask for Jessica or Faith since some of the optical drives they sell don't have RPC1 firmware available for them.

  • 802.11n upgrades for iMac & MacBook

For any who have been waiting for upgrades for older intel machines Quickertek has new user installable 802.11n cards for iMacs & MacBooks.

2 GHz Power PC iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This has been said many times, but I'll say it again: Unless you're having them do the installation, the QuickerTek cards are a rip-off. You can save $100 by buying a Mac Pro Airport Extreme Upgrade card for $49. It's the same card that QuickerTek is selling for their MacBook, MacBook Pro, and iMac upgrades, which means they're getting about a 200% markup.

    Hey there!
I own a HP pavilion 15 notebook PC, [Model number: F6C42PA#ACJ]. Currently it is equipped with a 1 TB SATA HDD. I was planning to upgrade it to SSD. Kindly guide me through steps and compatible products. Also is there a simple way to just walk into an authorised service centre and request thm to do the upgrade?

Any 2.5 inch SATA form factor SSD will work and I recommend a Samsung Evo 850.

There is a link to all the available sizes on the page. I would recommend at least a 256 and 500s are pretty affordable these days.
Where do you live? Country only, please. I have heard that HP Service Centers will perform memory and SSD upgrades on these "closed" systems but I am not sure where all of them are located or what they would charge. You should be able to find a competent local computer shop to do it. It does put the warranty in jeopardy but the warranty will not be revoked if the job is done properly, without damage to the laptop.

  • SSD bracket for iMac 27"?

    Hello,
I'd like to add an internal SSD to my 27" iMac i5. It looks like Apple only includes the necessary bracket with iMacs sold with the factory OEM SSD and Apple does not sell the bracket separately.
Does anyone know where I can find the bracket or if any 3rd parties are producing them? Seems like it couldn't be too hard to fab up.
    Jacob

    Hello Jacob
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The bracket is the easy part, they also have specialized provisions for monitoring and controlling the HD fan depending on which Hard Drive is installed at the factory. In the 2009 and 10 models the temperature sensor is built into the Hard Drive and if you change drives or disconnect the sensor the Hard Drive fan will run uncontrolled.
    See > [Aluminum iMac Q&A - August 13, 2010|http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/imac-aluminum-faq/imac-intel-al uminum-how-to-upgrade-hard-drive.html]
The following paragraph, sites problem better than I can...
+Site sponsor OWC also discovered that the "Late 2009" -- and subsequently introduced "Mid-2010" -- models use a "connector that seems to use the drive's internal sensors" rather than an external sensor like earlier Aluminum iMac models. This means that the only way to upgrade the hard drive is to "replace the drive with another model from the same manufacturer that [OWC or another third-party has] confirmed works properly with this thermal sensor cable". OWC provides a list of compatible drives. Readers have reported that taping an external temperature sensor to a hard drive or SSD that does not have an internal sensor will work, but this certainly could be risky.+

  • Cost/benefit of RAM upgrade for iMac G5 2 GHz from 1.5 to 2.0 GB

Equipment: iMac 20" 2.0 GHz, 250 GB HD, originally 500 MB RAM upgraded to 1.5 GB: (1) 500 MB and (1) 1 GB DDR SDRAM, PC3200U-30330.
Not understanding the subtleties of memory upgrades, I bought this off the shelf with 500 MB RAM. When the processor board was replaced, I added a 1 GB RAM and can't say I noticed any change in performance. It does reduce the need for page outs.
After this, I read something about needing to have the DIMMs matched for there to be a performance gain. Or maybe this related to 64 bit operation? I read elsewhere in the Discussions that 64 bit operation would actually consume more memory and reduce performance.
If I upgraded to 2.0 GB, would there be any improvement in performance? In general or only in certain situations?
If I upgrade RAM, I'll have (2) useless 500 MB DIMMs. Is there any value in these? Where is the best place to sell them or do they have value as trade-ins?
Or is the best use of the money to put towards an Intel Mac that can support 10.6+ ?(...or a share or two of Apple stock.)
    Please convey your wisdom. Thanks.
P.S. I know the stock is the best use of my money, so just consider the hardware options.

I happened to find this answer while looking for something else.
iMac G5 and iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor): Benefit of using matching memory modules (RAM) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2708
    Condensed version:
Applies only to original iMac G5 and iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor).
*If it has matching DIMMS it operates with a 128-bit data path, otherwise it uses a 64-bit data path.* A 128-bit data path allows greater throughput than a 64-bit data path. This allows faster manipulation of large files. With a 128-bit bus, you would see better performance when you have multiple applications open at the same time. Also, some enhanced gaming performance.
According to this, I was getting better performance before I added the 1 GB of RAM, except that degraded performance due to stuffing RAM to the gills has to be weighed against that. Seems like trading up to a full 2 GB would have some unquantified benefits. The only ways to find out are to find another iMac to compare with or to put in the RAM and see what happens.

  • Best SSD upgrade for macbook pro 2011 13"???

Hello all, I have a early 2011 macbook pro with 8gb ram, my question is what is the best ssd to upgrade the hdd from, I know the samsung 830 series is good and is the preferred choice for some people, and the crucial m4 is a good choice too, but has anybody had any hands on experience with these drives and any problems with firmware, lockups etc? I also know about the Intel drives too they are some of the most relaibe,  I want it to be as trouble free as possible haha !

  • SSD option for iMac when working off external worth it.

Ordering the maxed out iMac 27 i7 16g ram etc. is the SSD helpful if I work off externals for all my media etc.
I have the Air and see the boost for start up and application load times. Other than that is it really a boost for working with say FCP with media on an external drive.
I would assume the boost only helps if the files are on the actual ssd which given its size is not possible.
    So a bottleneck occurs.
Just could use 600$ in other areas if I only gain a fast startup and fast app loading.
    Thanks

Thank you and so well spoken baltwo
I have gotten so much "your crazy" from my buddy for spending tha max on everything else why not just SSD.
Just seemed at 600$ what's the gain if all my content is bottle necked on a second drive Or external....what's the point. Rather spend that cash on proper backing up solutions etc.
Guess I was feeling what we all are getting caught up in this SSD speed vacum. I have the air it's snappy and great but all files are residing on the drive. Not happening on an iMac so was wondering how much of gain is true to form.

  • SSD Upgrade for more storage (ENVY 14k)

Hi there,  I currently have an Envy 14-k124TX and want to upgrade the SSD from 128gb to 500gb. It currently has a samsung mzmtd 128 and I want to use a Samsung 850 EVO Series. I have opened up my laptop and am confident on the physcial change over. I meausred the exsisting SSD and it matches up exactly with the specs of the new one so I'm also confident it will fit.
I am after some advice on  A) Will the computer be able to use the SSD physcally (I'm sure that it would but I better check)
    B) What is the best way to tranfer over the operating system and all my personal files and programs, I would also be able to buy a MSATA to USB3 case if needed.  Thanks for any advice in advance, Griffin.

    B) What is the best way to tranfer over the operating system and all my personal files and programs, I would also be able to buy a MSATA to USB3 case if needed.  Download and use the Samsung data migration tool and a usb to sata cable. The transfer will be quick and painless. Leave the original SSD in place while performing the migration and afterwards swap in the new Samsung EVO 850. Thanks for any advice in advance, Griffin. I have a Samsung EVO 850 and really like it.

I have a used Imac 10.6.8 with Snow leopard. I need upgrades on Safri Snow leopard mail format and two gigabytes.

Several threads say the problem is the mail provider (gmail, Earthlink, etc) not Mail, which is technically unlimited. • Question about Memory Upgrade for iMac G3/350 - Slot Loading

I was thinking of upgrading my memory and found this on eBay
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350070149602
The auction says that it won't work in an apple computer but it looks like it should. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James S.

I agree with Richard; if the seller says it won't work in a Mac, why bother? It's likely to be hi-density, which either won;t work or will show up in a Mac as only half its true size.
I've been hanging around these forums for nearly seven years and have seen a lot of tears shed over alleged Mac RAM bought on eBay. Your mileage may vary, but I get RAM for our 13 Macs for online venders who are Mac-savvy. They all work.

looking at these two Samsung 8GB DDR3L RAM PC3L-12800 DDR3 1600Mhz 204pin Laptop Memory SODIMM 1.35v and a samsung 500gb evo , are these compatible with the acer aspire v 572 pg , it has software to transfer the old hard drive over , will this include the operating system and then do i just take out the old one and put the new drive in , will windows then boot , im thinking then i can do a clean install of windows and transfer all my files and programs back from the old hard drive using the sata to usb adaptor

  • M2.SATA ssd upgrade for my laptop

Hello all,Sorry about the poor English skills of me.
I want to know that my laptop has support M2.SATA or not? I want to install additional SSD. In the absence of support, can I add a "Caddy bay" to replace the DVD drive?
In all cases, my computer has lost the warranty or not? Thanks.

No M.2 mSSD slot. Here is the Manual: Your Manual p. 59 shows replacing the internal drive and p. 43 shows replacing the optical drive.  It takes the 9.5 mm optical drive caddy like this:  https://www.jacobsparts.com/items/HDDBAY-02/  A hard drive in such an enclosure: 1. will not be bootable; and 2. will run slower than one in the main hard drive bay so such a device is not suitable for a solid state drive but only for pure storage. A 5400 rpm drive would be fine.  You can replace the optical drive with one of these caddies and not affect the warranty. Just keep the optical drive in case you have to put it back in. If you try to access the internal hard drive bay you jeopardize the warranty and if you cause damage you are on your own but HP will honor the warranty if you do it without damaging anything.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Visit this link, I have used this memory in various mac and windows computers. If you do not wish to use this manufacture the scanner they provide will still tell you the memory you need.

  • Any update on Mac Pro 2013 ssd upgrade?

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge on weather an SSD upgrade for the current 2013 Mac Pro will be available soon. I bought a new Mac Pro 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5 12GB RAM for my music production for my studio, however I'm now finding the small SSD a limitation to working with software that needs a lot of space available on the hard drive to install. As far as space for files, I use a external hard drive so that doesn't really matter. I've been constantly checking the web ever so often to see if there is any updated news on pcie ssd upgrades for the new mac pro but can't find anything. OWC did make a prototype SSD for this machine and rumours were that in the 4th quarter on this year they would be available for the public, however that doesn't seem to be the case...
I really wish I went for the 500gb version now even if it was a bit more expensive.
If anyone has any information on when aftermarket pcie based ssds for this machine will be available it will be much appreciated.
    Phil.
