SSD vs Mech HDD for AE CS4 Source Files?

When starting a new AE project, should I copy all the assets, the source files to my SSD?
Will AE work faster that way or should I just leave them on the mechanical drive?
I'm running a Win7 64-bit system with 12G of RAM, a 6-core processor (core i7 980X) and an SSD, plus a couple internal 7200K mechanical drives and some USB drives.
Currently on the SSD I have the OS and my apps and I've still got nearly 80G of free space. I'd like CS4 to exploit that space if  possible.
I have the same basic question regarding the other apps in the CS4 Production Premium Suite, if you'd care to comment on them as well. If not no problem, I understand this is the AE forum.
Thanks for any thoughts you can share - I appreciate it!

btw, if you're curious why I'm asking, it's because of what I read in Adobe's Help file:
"Before rendering, put all of your source footage files on a local disk—not the one that the application runs from. A good way to do this is with the Collect Files command."
AE CS4 Help was written before SSDs became popular so I wonder how much would change if it were amended now.
Anyway, bringing the source files together onto the SSD seems like a good idea to me. But I'll test it - render the same project with the assets imported onto the SSD and also with them sitting on a mechanical disk.

  • Can I change the default 'File Type' for PL/SQL Source File to '*.prc' ?

Want to change the 'default' extension for PL/SQL source to '*.prc'
When navigating 'File' / 'Save As', and selecting the 'File Type' list box,
The default 'File Type' for PL/SQL Source File is '*.pls'.
Can I change the default 'File Type' for PL/SQL Source File to '*.prc' ?
I have followed , 'Tools', 'Preferences' , 'File Types' and added '.prc' as 'Sql Script' file type, because (PL/SQL Source) is not present in the list.

You can certainly overwrite the 'Save As' extension as you are saving the file. I have added an ER for more control over this functionality.

  • FDM Scripting Query for last imported source file using Batch Processing

    Hi Experts,
I'm currently in the processing of automating the FDM load process on our version of FDM 9.3.3 using batch processing and the FDM Task Manager. Most of the process works fine including an email alert which notifies users of when a data load has taken place.
As part of that email alert I am trying to attach the source file that has been loaded in batch processing. I have managed to get an attachment using the following FDM Script Object of:
    "API.MaintenanceMgr.fPartLastFile(strLoc, True, False)".
But have noticed that using this only attaches the last "manually" imported file rather than the last file imported using the batch processing.
My question is: Is it possible for someone to steer me into the right direction of either a more appropriate API or if I have missed a step in my script.
Any help as always would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Pip

Unfortunately the batch process does not work the same way as on-line. I am assuming you are using the normal batch load and not Multiload (although the batch is simisar).
the batch file name gets recorded on the tBatchContents table, and moved to the import/batches folder under the folder for the current batch run. However, if successful the file gets deleted (and from memory does not get archived). To add the import file to the e-mail, after a successful load, i think you will need to store a copy of it prior to importing the file.

  • J2EE BluePrints: correct location for common Java source files

I have a set of Java source files that are common between multiple J2EE applications.
Within the J2EE package hierarchy, what is the correct location for these files?
Also, is there a typical package name that common Java source files are grouped under?

    HI,
There is no standard place. In the blueprints project conventons
http://java.sun.com/blueprints/code/projectconventions.html it has a place called components/ which would contain shared components like EJBs and other components that could be shared across applications. the package naming would be reflected in that, like com.sun.blueprints.application1. and com.sun.blueprints.application2. and com.sun.blueprints.common.*
Generally you could put a directory at the same level as the apps (not inside an app's directory structure) and maybe called common/ or shared/ . This common code could be built separtely and into a binary library or jar that you just include in the other applicatons, in the same way you would include some external library jar that you got somewhere and keep in your workspace and your apps use. The packaging of common code is similiar to the packaging of different applications and shared components.

  • SSD vs 7200rpm HDD for Graphic Designer

hi i'm looking to purchase a new MacBook Pro and am wondering if it's better to get a 128GB SSD or 500GB 7200rpm HD. I am a graphic designer and will be working with Indesign, Illustrator, Bridge and layered PSD files around 300MB. Thanks!

    How about both?
Get a data doubler & swap out your DVD Drive, and if you like you can also get an enclosure for the DVD Drive, so you can still use it via USB if needed.
Your going to want the space, and a 128GB would be perfect for your OS, but not for all those gigs of graphics you'll be working on.
So it seems like the perfect solution does it not?

  • How to load data using two maps for the same source file in Import Manager

    Hi,
I am trying to load the source data to MDM using two map files, since one map is too big (creating memory error).
However the first map data able to see after loading (SAP data) but when loading second map(nonSAP data) using the remote key to match the previously loaded SAP key ,even if MDM is processing the data it is not reflecting in data manager.
Is there any reason for this.
Appreciate your suggestion and tips on this.
    regrds,
    Reo

    Hi Reo,
As ur requirement seems,In the second pass perform recording matching by select default import action as "<b>update null fields only"</b> for those data records which are matching and "<b>create</b> " for those data records which are not matching with previous data records from SAP system.
If you define "update null fields only", then only the key of the new record from NON SAP will get appended to the existing record. And if you select "create" then it will create new records and will apply NON SAP key on it.
Please check the remote key values using data manager.Key is applied in the records or not.
Remember that import maps are client specific. Remote key comprises of both key and client system. So be sure that you are connecting to two different client systems.
I have tried this and this is working fine on my system.

  • Using external HDD for Time Machine and files in one single partition ?

    Hello everybody.
I've been searching for some time now and have encountered some contradictory answers, so I turn to you.
I would like to know if it's possible (one) and safe (two) to use a single partition for both Time Machine and file storage. I've read that this should be ok, since TM is actually only a single folder, which means the rest can easily be used as a standard Finder drive. Some people say however that this is not good to do so, because TM will run out of space quicker. But if the -let's say- 30Gb used for files where used by TM after a month, that would be the same, wouldn't it ? It would simply erase older backups. But is it safe to do so ? Will Time Machine not makes errors when accessing files or doing an entire system backup ? I don't won't to make a new partition really, that's why I'm asking you here, to let me know some arguments about it.
Thank you very much for your answers.

    Marekova wrote:
Yet, overlooking that, you say "safe: mostly", why is that ? where's the "danger" or, what where you thinking when you said that ? Aren't these simple folder's ? Do you mean that, because during a full backup, these "stranger" files could be a problem ? It would be great if that was clarified, since I've found no indication about it elsewhere, has anyone tryed it ?
Oh, yes folks have tried it. That's why I (and many others) recommended against it.
Here's a similar thread from just the other day: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1926893 Note the responses from the top 2 "gurus" on this forum.
I probably should have asked you what you mean by "safe." If you mean, will TM delete other files on it's partition, no, it won't. If you mean, can there be problems, then yes, there can be conflicts and difficulties, as mentioned.
As to whether TM backups are simple folders, no, they aren't. They look like normal files and folders, but they actually contain what are variously called "hard links," "multi-links," and (my own personal favorite term) "ghost clones." Think of them as very fancy aliases. So they're not to be fooled with directly, by us mere mortals.
If you want more on this: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2007/10/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14
    and/or: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/10/12/roadto_mac_os_x_leopard_timemachine.html
and, if you haven't seen it yet: http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#tutorial=leopardtimemachine
You should also know that, for some reason, TM stores it's backups differently when it does them wirelessly. In that case, they're in a "SparseBundle," very different from the structure used for directly-attached backups.
All the more reason to put each Mac's backups in a separate partition, and if you want to store other data there also, a 3rd partition for that.
I've been using Mac since many years now, but I have no idea about backups, so excuse me if the statements appear a little childish.
Nope. Even those of us who are "older than dirt" and have used many flavors and varieties of backup systems for decades are in a whole new world with Time Machine.
And most of the folks on this forum who found themselves in deep trouble got there because they assumed things or didn't ask.

  • Related to calculation of value from two source files

Hi, we have two files based on volume and costs
    Time,Item,site,ASM,Retail are dimensions..
    The volume one is:
    May-09     item 1     Site 1     ASM 1     Retail     VOL     100
    May-09     item 2     Site 1     ASM 1     Retail     VOL     150
    May-09     item 3     Site 1     ASM 1     Retail     VOL     130
    May-09     item 4     Site 1     ASM 1     Retail     VOL     120
    May-09     item 4     Site 1     ASM 2     Retail     VOL     150
    May-09     item 4     Site 2     ASM 3     Retail     VOL     100
    The Cost one is:
    May-09     item 1     Site 1     1.2
    May-09     item 2     Site 1     1.3
    May-09     item 3     Site 1     1.1
    May-09     item 4     Site 2     1.3
    May-09     item 4     Site 1     1.5
note that in the second file site,ASM are missing (this was the problem for us from source file)
Here in essbase we need to calculate VALUE = VOL * COST with respect to item and site, such that in selection critera
the value must be represented with respect to ASM and Retail dimension also.
Psl post the approach and the sollution how to load this and how to calculate..

    Hi,
You would have to transform the second file to include the ASM and Retail dimension members. It is essential that you have one to one relationship between Site, ASM and Retail. You can maintain the mapping in a separate file and then read the cost file and get values for ASM and Retail from mapping file.
Otherwise in the load rule, you will have to specify one single member from each dimension - ASM, Retail in the header definition.
Once you have the data in the system, you can run a calculation to calculate the value of VALUE. Or else, you can also define a formula on VALUE.
Let me know if it helps.
    Cheers

  • ** How to get Source File Name thru XSLT Mapping

    Hi friends,
We require source file name after message processing (SXMB_MONI) in the output structure.  We understad from Forums and  blog 2664, this is possible thru UDF - DynamicConfiguration class. This UDF will work if we use message mapping. But, in our case we are using XSLT mapping. So, how do we call  the same from Java Pacakage ? (Imported Archives). For writing java class separately, what are the changes to be made in the program?
    DynamicConfiguration conf = (DynamicConfiguration) container.getTransformationParameters().get(StreamTransformationConstants.DYNAMIC_CONFIGURATION);
    DynamicConfigurationKey key = DynamicConfigurationKey.create("http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File","FileName");
    String ourSourceFileName = conf.get(key);
    return ourSourceFileName;
    Kindly reply, friends.
    Kind Regards,
    Jeg P.

    Hi,
This is the example in this similar manner u have to call the method in which u have to write the code for picking the source file name.
    <name>
       <xsl:if test="function-available('javamap:concat')">
        <xsl:value-of select="javamap:concat($first, $last, $inputparam)"/>

Many ThanksI would stick with notepad (or whatever is the simplest text editor your OS offers) for editing and the command prompt for compiling, running, jarring, etc. Somebody who sticks with the basics for the first year of programming will turn out to be a better programmer than somebody who used a fancier IDE with syntax highlighting, auto-completion, compiling and running without the command prompt, and whatever other bells and whistles come with it.
I used notepad and the command prompt for my first year, then used JCreator pretty much all throughout college.

  • Multiple source files

    Hi,
My client has given me two files for HEADER and ITEM as source
and receiver has only one structure . can anyone guide my how to  proceed with mapping .Please help me
    FULL POINTS WILL BE AWARDED
    thank u
    Bhasker

    Hey,
According to your scenario you have two source and one target.
    This is N:1 mapping.
You need to have a BPM for this.Because without BPM you would be able to configure your message mapping and interface mapping successfully but you will face problem in iterface determination in ID.
what you need to do is create two DT(structures) for the two source files.
    create two message type.
refer to both of them in you message mapping(i.e. your message mapping will have two source structure)
create  a  DT and MT for target file.
refer to this structure as target in your mapping.
    Do your mapping.
    Now create a BPM.
you must have two recieve steps.one for each source file.
you must have a trasnformation step for your mapping (as your mapping is in the transformationstep you dont need an interface determination.)
then you must have a send step for target file.
As you have two recieve step you should have a correlation between them.
refer to this link for correlation.
    /people/sravya.talanki2/blog/2005/08/24/do-you-like-to-understand-147correlation148-in-xi
i hope the other configuration steps need not be explained.
    reward points if useful,
    regards,

  • Source files gone Offline but still exist - Can't export sequence!

    Hi folks,
I'm hoping someone can help me out of a predicament, please.
I began a brief project a year or so back in FCP 3x for a friend to send to her kids. Since then it lay fallow until she brought me some new footage to add, but still have the Scratch disk intact as it was and the FCP Project files library with it. In the interim I'd upgraded the FCP Studio 3 and opened up the project in FCP 7. Strangely, some of the clips in the bin were listed as offline. I couldn't discern any pattern or reason why some clips were still linked with their raw source files and some not. In any case, I finished editing the short sequence in the timeline and went to export it to QT. I should have realized that, predictably, the exported sequence included only those segments that were not offline. I checked again and all the source clips from the camera exist, but was unable to reconnect them to the clips that access them.
For instance, the source file might be named, 100_2347.MOV, while named in the bin, ELS - Windshield Before JLM.
I'm notified that 20 of the clips are offline, but any attempt to reconnect fails. I'm not as savvy in FCP as I probably should be, otherwise this would not have happened, or I could reconstruct the actions that got me there, but I was fairly proficient on a Moviola and fluent on a Steenbeck about a 100 years ago, though.
What can I do at this point? Is there any way to force a reconnect? Manually? Will I have to start a new project re-import the clips and recut the thing? I hope I won't have to edit the thing from scratch at this point. What am I forgetting (Doh)? Thanks in advance for any help on this.
    All the best,
    David

Control-click on an offline clip in your FCP Browser, and choose Reconnect Clip from the drop down menu. In the top box of the pane that opens, you should see the clip listed as offline, and the directory where FCP was expecting to find the clip.
Is FCP expecting to find the clip on a drive that you no longer have connected, or have renamed?
What happens when you press the locate button?
Don't worry that you have renamed the clip in the browser to something other than than the source file name. FCP will keep track of that.

  • How do I use my SSD for apps and HDD for documents?

    Hi, everyone.
I just installed (myself) an Intel 120GB SSD into my 2011 iMac (3.4Ghz Quad-Core, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD). I kept the HDD.
I run Logic Pro 9 and have around 200GB of additional sample plugins (VSL Solo Strings, Ivory Grand Pianos, Superior Drummer, etc..) and
I want to know how I can successfully transfer the Apps (Logic, Sibelius, Pages, iTunes, etc...) onto my new SSD while keeping the plugins on my HDD and using them simultaneously.
I having been searching for a way to do this all day to no avail.
    Thanks! If you can help.
p.s. since some of the apps require registration, I cannot simply drag them to my SSD from the HDD and expect them to work. I get an error.

My suggestion is to move you entire home directory on to the hdd and leave the ssd for the os and your key applications.
