SSD, What you would pick? What do you think?

I want to get a SSD drive in my macbook pro, like most you know there are many out there, i thought i could tell you my thoughts and the experienced people could help.
I have 2010 Macbook Pro i7, I plan to put the SSD in the optibay as on the 2010 i7 the SATA is the same speed for both HD bay and optibay. This would let me keep the HD spin down and motion detection in place. I would boot from the SSD in the optibay.
The drives i have been looking at and my thoughts:
• OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 240GB.
Generally good reviews, quick reliable and great customer service. The new firmware has just come out but im still seeing reports of sleep/hibernation issues.
• Crucial 256GB C300
Again great reports, slightly cheaper than the OWC (im in the UK so import tax), the main thing i see about this drive is it work or it does not, would love to hear reports from people who have it running.
• Intel X-25 200GB+
New to the market, the big talk is about the speed, from what i can understand it would not benefit me as im limited in speed due to my SATA chip set, i thought it would be a good idea to get a faster drive as i would intent to move it to a new mac in the future.
• OCZ Vertex 2E 240GB.
Now down in price due to the new version, again i would not see the speed boost with the new version (would i?)
So i think im asking for your thoughts and what you have running in your macbook pro SSD wise.

All OWC Extreme, OCZ Vertex 2 and Corsair Force drives have SandForce controller, which is a good alternative to keep the drive performance since Snow Leopard lacks of TRIM support. Also, all of them support TRIM command and would be ready for Lion when it will be available.
I'm in France and I faced the same doubts you do. I would go for an OWC if it was available here since it has official support to Macintosh. But due to all import inconveniences and taxes, I decided to buy a Corsair F240 and it is working wonderfully a part from the hibernation problem.
Just a tip: Once you have decided and installed your new drive, consider to take a look at http://poller.se/2010/08/optimizing-mac-os-x-for-ssd-drives/. They give very interesting tricks to increase the life of your SSD on Mac OS X.

    I am among this community since I invested much into this corporation. I rather go to the consumers just to discuss an idea I would like for this corporation to achieve. I do not like to purchase third party accessories as they seem to fail my expectations or the fact that it is not worth it when i finally see what they have made. Yes they are good products but there is much disappointment when I look to third-party products that say they are engineering products for the iPhone or other Apple device I have purchase. Just a thought no need to be so hostile.

  • Would be nice for Apple to create means for deleting email across all devices. Time consuming device by device especially for members receiving many emails. What do you think gang?!

    How about Apple creating a means to delete email across devices especially when you have like 4 Apple devices (Mac, Macbook Pro, iPad and iPhone) Would benefit those of us receiving 13 - 1700 messages across the products. iOS 8 coming in fall. What do you think gang. Very frustrating and time consuming!!

    If you have a suggestion for product improvement, provide feedback to Apple - you aren't talking to them here.

  • Family Data Pricing (What do you think would be fair?)

    Currently people are getting ripped off for $30 data plans and I assume many use under 1GB per month. Because of this many cannot afford data plans for their family.
    I use around 150MB 3G each month, the rest is over WIFI.
    Questions:
    1. How much data do you use each month? (Found through MyVerizon)
    2. How do you think Verizon is going to set up family data?
    3. How much should a family of 4 pay for family data if each of them gets 2GB each considering what I said above about many not even using 1GB (although is is probably rapidly changing with video calls and 4G LTE). I still think people on average use less then 2GB.
    I would have to say $70 for 8GB for the family to share. $17.50 per person. At that figure I think we would start to see a lot more smartphones being sold but I'm sure my figure is really low by Verizon's standard.
    So, what do you all think Verizon will do with pools of data? Speculate on prices and amount of data.

    Verizon has a $20/300MB data plan, which I have with an iPhone.
    1. I used 75MB or less each month (I have used 75MB once).
    2. Verizon is either going to add it as an option in current shared plan or create a separate data share plan (I''m thinking the later).
    3. I would prefer not paying for data and just using WiFi, but I would say for a family/share plan no more than $20/GB on the account level.

  • Still in a quandary about hardware specs. What do you think?

    I need to build a new system as editing machine for CS4. Everything is more or less clear as to what I need, there are only two issues remaining:
    1. How much RAM to install, and
    2. Disk setup.
    As always there is the balance between performance and costs. Since this is not "an unlimited means available" type of machine, you will not see much esoteric components, like SSD raids or nVidia Quadro CX card. It is a dual E5472 Harpertown system (8 core), running Vista 64 Business.
    1. How much RAM would be a good balance in price/performance? 8 or 16 GB? We are talking about Kingston Value Ram DDR2-6400 ECC FBDIMM, either 4 x 2 GB ( 420) or 4 x 4 GB ( 650), with the possibility to double memory in the future. If you do not make a habit of continuously switching between PP, AE, EN, PS etc. and are mainly using only 1 application at the time, I wonder if there is a noticeable performance gain to justify the additional cost. The choice is obvious if the total cost of the machine would not be stretching available means. So what do you think?
    2. Main storage is 8 x WD Caviar Black 1 TB disks in raid50 for media, renders, scratch etc. But what about the boot disk? Either a 300 GB WD Velociraptor ( 240), or 4 x WD Scorpio (7200 RPM) 160 GB in raid10 ( 250), using on-board ESB2 chipset.
    While we are at it, does it make sense to add 4 x WD Scorpio 250 GB in Raid5 (on an Areca ARC controller with free ports) only for pagefile, projects and temporary export. Final export will be transferred over the network to a burning machine for DVD's. Backups of projects is to external USB disks and on a separate machine over VPN.
    The case has room for 8 hot swappable 3.5" disks and 8 hot swappable 2.5" laptop disks plus another disk and a DVD/BR burner internally. There are still 4 external eSATA ports available for future expansion. Foreseen video card is ATI 4870 512MB. Network is currently a 1 Gb connection, but can be enhanced to 2 Gb with 2 NIC's.
    Look forward to your reactions.

    Bill,
    The case is the
    Supermicro SC743TQ-865SQ
    and the storage bay for the 2.5" disks is the
    Addonics AE4RCS25NSA (2.5 Disk Array 4SA)
    Thanks for your remark about the difficulty of troubleshooting boot arrays. That might be an advantage for the Velociraptor.
    Dag, no. I don't make the mistake of visiting Amsterdam, unless it is absolutely necessary, like visiting the IBC, let alone visiting those bars. I came to realize that Vista has grown up a bit with SP1 and with full support for 64 it now makes a bit more sense than XP64. It does imply a couple of days tweaking Vista (= removing 'features') to make it work decently, but after that is accomplished I will make a slip streamed DVD version for future installs, so that is a one time investment. With recent enhancements in Nullsoft that is easily accomplished, including all intermediate patches and 'Patch Tuesday' versions.

  • Has anyone else ever had a problem where you had to perform 2 datasocket writes before the datasocket read would pick up the change?

    I have a local VI that is simply a control that writes to the datasocket server whenever the control value changes.(the dataitem on the server is permanent - its initialized and never released by the server)
    In the same local VI I have a datasocket read polling a different dataitem on the server.
    The remote machine has a VI that reads the permanent dataitem on the server once per second.
    For some reason, after adding the local VI mentioned above, the remote VI stopped picking up the first change in the permanent variable.
    I'd start both the local and remote VIs...
    Then change the local control and the remote V
    I would not update - as if the datasocket write(upon adjusting the control) did not take place. So I'd change the control value again - this time the remote VI would update to this new value. And from here on out - the remote VI would update correctly. This problem only occurs when the local VI is first started up.
    What in the heck is going on?

    Gorka is right, this came up on Info-LV a few days ago. Someone
    described a similar problem. I replied that I had seen similar
    behaviour, reported it to NI, and they verified a bug. There is no fix
    yet, but they are aware of it and will fix it. No anticipated release
    date for the fix.

  • What do you think of my Bash Script? What about the error checking?

    Well what do you think of this Bash script
    It works
    I gave it some problems (i.e. unpluged the ethernet, messed up the URL's, uninstaled some programs...) to see if would report errors and stop or just keep going... But it did
    I just kind of thought up a way to do some error checking with the commands that I know.....
    What is a better way to do error checking?
    What do you think I should add/Do to this script?
    #!/bin/bash

    # Then run the command- chown root:root usbbiosflasher

    # Then copy the script to the directory /usr/bin.
    # Run this comand to do that- sudo cp ~/usbbiosflasher /usr/bin
    # You also must have the program "mbr" installed
    # You can install the mbr program by running this comand in the shell on Ubuntu
    # sudo apt-get install mbr

    Personally.....  (this is just how I would have written it - if it works, then it's good enough for me though )
    I would change this whole block:
    verify="n"
    while [ "$verify" != y ]
    do
    printf "Do you have mbr installed... yes or no?"
    read AN1
    echo ""
    printf "You answered... $AN1 I have installed mbr. Is this correct... y or n?"
    read verify
    done
    echo ""
    if [ "$AN1" == "no" ]
    then
    echo "Install mbr now. Then run this script agin"
    exit
    else
    echo "contunuing script"
    fi
    To this much shorter code:
    MBR='/usr/bin/install-mbr' # Or where ever you expect it to be
    if [ ! -x $MBR ] ; then
    echo "mbr doesn't appear to be installed."
    echo "If it is installed, check it's location, make sure it's executable and then make sure the MBR variable in this script is correct"
    exit 1
    fi
    I wouldn't have used the checkXX variables for each stage:
    mkdir ~/usbbiosfiles
    if [ $? != 0 ] ; then
    #failed
    echo "Could not \make directory usbbiosfiles"
    echo "look above \for \info"
    echo "Fix the problem and run this scrip agin"
    exit 1
    else
    echo "Made directory usbbiosfiles... OK"
    fi
    There is an issue with the way you do your verifications - the user can never get out unless they answer 'y' or hit CTRL+C. Something like this gives them options:
    verify="n"
    while [ "$verify" != "y" && "$verify" != "n" ]; do
    echo "You need to answer 'y'es or 'n'o"
    read verify
    echo $verify | tr "[:upper:]" "[:lower:]" # This converts the answer to lowercase so replies entered in upper case will still work
    done
    if [ $verify != 'y' ] ; then
    exit 1
    fi
    One last thing I try to do in scripts... Declare all your binaries as variables at the start of the program, then execute the binary program by using the variable. For example:
    # Binaries
    TAR='/bin/tar'
    CP='/bin/cp'
    CHMOD='/bin/chmod'
    # Execute tar and chmod the created file
    $TAR cvzf /tmp/tarfile.tar.gz /etc/*.conf
    $CHMOD 400 /etc/*.conf
    This way, it's easy to change the path in future without having to hunt through the script if the paths change, and it also ensures you're calling the programs using the full paths to make sure you're not executing some strange variant or alias that someone has setup. If I use `chmod` 30 times in a script, and the path changes in the future or on a different system (`chmod` is a bad example cause it's highly unlikely to change, but you know what I mean), then all you need to do is update the variable at the start of the script, and it all works again without having to script-hunt and change it 30 times.

  • Lack of SD card slots what do you think

    I don't know about the rest of you, but I like my stuff on an SD card. Not in a cloud. It seems Motorola, Verizon, and android all want you to put your stuff in the cloud. I'm sorry but I like my privacy and I like to access my content even when I have no signal. The cloud is for morons who don't realize their stuff can be hacked. If the Pentagon can be hacked, so can the cloud. Verizon, give us the option. Quit force feeding us stuff that a bunch of techno geeks sitting around and dream up. I have been a loyal customer for years and your trying my patience. I like my Droid Razr MAXX HD. It has served me well for 2 years in some of the worst environments. It has never failed me and I think you hit the nail on the head when you introduced it. But you took a moronic stance and quit offering it. You got it right and then screwed it up. The only complaint I had was all the bloat ware. Give us the choice. We buy the phone, it is ours, we should be the ones to decide what stays and what goes. Not some ***** sitting in marketing. If you want to introduce it, then do so but allow the people the choice of what stays and what goes. It will cost you customers in the future if you don't, including me. Have a nice day!!!!

    You ask "what do you think".
    I think that your message would/will be better received if you didn't resort to name calling and "colorful" language.
    You/we will never win the "argument" over what you term "bloatware".  Verizon enters into financial agreements with the providers of that software to be able to install it on the devices.  They make a lot of money (presumably) on this, so it is not likely to end.

  • What do you think is the best method to achieve this:

    Within my main timeline, I have a bunch of buttons that scale up on mouseOver and scale down on MouseOut. With your help, I have gotten these all set up exactly how I need them to be.... so thanks for that.
    My next question is a bit trickier, I think I have a few options to achieve it, but curious what you think is the best way to do such a thing:
    So, if you rollover a button, you get the scale up, now, what needs to happen, is when you click that button, the button scales to full screen with bleeds, check out the AS2 version here: www.straightlinenyc.com/introduction/launch.html (go to explore, and click any of the circles).
    Right now, I am thinking that when you click a bubble, within its movieclip I will build the transition – so if you click, it will go to the btnHit label and there the button will scale up and set the stage for me to load in the case study work. My thinking is at the end of the scale up to full screen, I could put an enterFrame function, saying once you hit this frame, gotoAndPlay the case study frame that I will place on the main timeline.
    Obviously, my problem right now, is that if you mouse off the buttons hit state while this is occurring, everything goes away  – so thinking on hit I should remove the hit state child.
    The other option that may make more sense, is to addChild the hit state, so when you click it, that just loads on top of the button then runs, is this the simpler way?
    Anyway, just would be good to get "some" direction, and take it from there. Thanks!

    Depending on the specs of your computer, time taken to convert DVD's to an iPod-playable format can vary. On my computer (see below), it takes about 10 hours to convert a 2-hour DVD to the iPod format, using Videora.
    So, due to the extremely large size of the DVD rip, it'll take a while to convert it, regardless of how fast or slow your system is.

  • Best IDE & Platform Configuration? What do you think?

    What do you think the best IDE is out there? I want to compile and create applications as well as servlets and beans, but my focus would be on the beans, servlets, jsp, etc, the web stuff. Once I have the IDE for that, what is the best configuration for developing under that environment. For example I would like to use the the JavaMail API as well, and that is available for the J2EE. So I can install both the J2SE and J2EE SDK's right? Should I accept their default installation directories? Is it possible to move files, the .jar files for example over the to a single directory for centralization? Help, trying to get an understaning how to create a nice development environment. Simple, efficient, etc.
    Thanks so much!!
    Terry

    I personally think Eclipse is outstanding. I used JBuilder for a while, but it insisted on formatting code the JBuilder way. Eclipse also has refactoring, which is a major bonus. Moving classes is now a few clicks instead of performing a search-replace on all your files. There are UML and dozens of other types of plug-in.
    As far as setting-up your environment, I normally duplicate a web application's deployment. So, the external JAR's I need are in WEB-INF/lib. The IDE should take care of classpath issues, if you perform the initial project set-up properly. I would also learn Jakarta's Ant. It makes deployment a lot easier, at the expense of some up-front development.

  • Search by Problem/Issue in BTK, what do you think??

    Would Bug Toolkit be more effective in identifying bugs if the tool provided you with an option to search by inputting the problem or issue you are facing with your device/network in addition to keeping the existing options to search by product or Bug ID?

    I think that would be a very good idea.
    I was also thinking of some other things that might be good with searching for bugs that may affect the user.
    Here is what I was thinking and please everyone feel free to chime in.
    What I would like to be able to do is put in what piece of equipment I have, the IOS level I am running, paste in the out put of Show Inventory, and then have it take me to all bugs that only relate to my setup. And then I would like to be able to filter out things or services I do not use with maybe just check boxes and then get the results that not only affect my exact equipment but the features I use. This would be very helpful not only when I run into a problem but also when I would like to upgrade to another IOS. And even better would be the ability to save my equipment as I input it for future checks and maybe even alert me when something may affect my equipment.

  • Never buy a Sony Ericsson for it's Customer Service ? What do you think ?. Terrible experience.Please advise.

    Hi , my name is Jomon Philipose . I am from Bangalore and a victim of poor workmanship and service  of Sony Ericsson C905A. It was not even 6 months that the camera , for which I bought the set showed it's true colours. "Open Lens Cover problem in Sony Ericsson phone". Yeah , just try and put that on Google and see the number of negative matched results for it !!!!!!. Guess should have read the reviews for Sony Ericsson before spending 12000 INR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.It's not only your hard earned money but the free frustration that you get for no fault of your own .. Taking it to the service centre is the only option where they tell you to repair it in 7 days but takes 2 weeks forcing you to buy a new phone if you do not have one. Forget all the re syncronisation and setting that you have to do about it, and think about the responses that you get from the Service Centre , in do not know what language. Caution : If you talk to them for more than hour it's hazardous to your spoken English .
    All you get to hear is the recorded tone of "Please wait for 48 hours " Even after you call them after 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
    No response to the Work Order complaint (SE311SS211175) what so ever . This is a crazy customer service !!!!!!! . I will definately never buy a Sony Ericsson no matter how good a phone reviews are  . Neither will let anyone whom I know buy it and put in best efforts to awaken them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .
    I have logged innumerable complaints at with Legal Feedback , Media Feedback , send an email to [email protected]@support.sonyericsson.com>
    Don't believe me ? , well you would have if you had heard the conversation with the Shrishti Services guys who tells me that neither " can they give the phone on time " or " Will they return it to me unrepaired!!!!!!". At one point of time I thought , the phone was Sony Ericsson's intellectual property!!!!.
    My phone is under Warranty . I am being told by the Sony Service Contact Centre guys over and again that my phone is not liable to change WO Number : SE311SS211175 old Work order : Se311SS210347. Request number for the replacement of the product
    90599712.
    They tell me I cannot speak to the escalations  manager . Neither can I escalate it .
    Is it  that all I have to do is keep on waiting without my phone ?. It's been the 17 th Day now . I am sure it is going to take a lot more time . They shamelessly said 8 more working days yesterday lol!!!!!
    I am definitely seeking help from the Consumer Court of India  .
    Guys ,lucky you if you had not to face the Customer Service Centre especially in India ,  or else may God help you .
    I really want to hear from the people who actually think there job is "Customer Care" and they are been paid for it coz I am still without a phone.

    If you think you are lucky go ahead and buy it,maybe by this time you could have already bought it  coz God forbid something happens to it, you do not have a  good customer service to support it.  After getting my phone back , not surprisingly again for the 4 th time the camera stopped working . It's a faulty product altogether and I do not want to go through the pains again to go through them . They are supposed to check the set again within 90 days from the time , the repair was carried out. But you know what I have given up  on them as my work does not allow me to keep my phone away for a long time .
    It would be a real pain in the place you know where .  All my research for buying a good phone at competitive price went straight into the gutters .
    . I would rather buy a new phone than going through the same process again for the 4 th time. And that would not be a Sony Ericsson for sure. They simply wouldnt agree that it is a faulty set and give me all kinds of stupid excuses like your phone has been used for 11 months and all . I have a question for them do you really spend thousaands for a just a phone only for the features or the peace of mind as well. Cause this one has definitely not brought peace to me . I mean c'mon 4 th time, same problem!!!!!!!
