SSH changes vs future firmware update

Hullo, I have made some changes to WD My Cloud via SHH: I disabled ipv6;I stopped two services through crontab (S85wdmcserverd and S86wdphotodbmergerd)etc, according to http://blog.cloud-client.info/?p=1365 In case of future firmware update and I perform the installation will the changes done be overwritten?Would be advisable to accept the update in the future? Thank you in advance.

Indeed, an answer from a user that has experienced the aggravation of firmware updating and vowed never again will he update; unless he has two clouds (one to update and the other to keep as backup). yes... once you update your firmware, all changes will be lost and if you had store script files in the /usr/local/sbin directory, they will be gone too... In a sense it is a good thing because if you had done a lot a changes, this reverts your device back to original factory state. Now I have heard rumors that if you by pass too many firmware updates and decided to upgrade from, lets say 3.04 (which happens to coincide with my current version) to the latest firmware 4.xxx which is probably 6 update versions ago, your device will be bricked. They say, the customers that runs and replies in this forum, that you will need to upgrade your firmware one by one until you reach the latest version. The other rumor is that many have updated their firmware to the latest version to find that nothing works, speed is slower, usb connections don't connect and of course drop outs are more frequent. Then there are those who says "I've upgraded and everything is fine", but that particular user probably has 5MB of data on his drive. Now here is what I suggest. 1. Always have another copy of your data which has nothing to do with firmware updates. Never ever copy your data to the Cloud device and erase the original unless you have another copy somewhere else. If you don't have another device and don't wish to buy another device, either leave the original on your original drive and use the Cloud as your backup, or subscribe to one of the free or paid online storage to keep a backup copy, but don't rely on the online storage as your only copy either, since places like Megaupload may disappear overnight and your only copy may be in the hands of the FBI.2. if you upgrade your firmware, it is better to have another Cloud for a 3rd backup. That way if something fails (and it would feel like it expecially when it goes white light on you), you have another device to use while the other one is being RMAed.3. If you have stopped the scans from occuring, the first thing that happens after an update is a flurry of activity from your Cloud trying to catch up on its scans and you might get locked out. So be prepared to SSH into it as soon as it lets you which is way way after the white light stays on for several hours (speaking from experience). 4. Once you SSH in, be prepare to repeat the fixes that you applied to your last version. For four years (or more), I haven't seen a switch to turn off the media scans although in version 3.04, they actually turned off the scans automatically dues to processor overload and it had a message on the UI telling me that the scans has been stopped and in order to restart the scans you must reboot (I didn't reboot for 6 months). You can skip firmware upgrades as I have without too much problems. Although they have fixed a couple of potential security threats, none of them should potentially affect you since you are behind a router. Although eventually I expect that I will have to upgrade my firmware simply for the reason that the matching iphone app will require the latest version. Perhaps on that day, I will sell my Cloud and move on to a more robust NAS. Good luck..  edit: the/bin/sh /etc/rc2.d/S86wdphotodbmergerd stop /bin/sh /etc/rc2.d/S85wdmcserverd stop  are not permanent changes. If you reboot the Cloud, those two process will restart. The update-rc.d commands will disable the processes until you upgrade the firmware.

  • E-61 changed keyboard with firmware update

    Hi,
I'm a U.S. E-61 user. I recently upgraded the firmware on my device using the phone update software found at http://www.europe.nokia.com/A4176089?E61.
Everything works fine except for my keyboard. Now, my "@" sign, along with a few other keys, displays an Arabic character. Additionally, some shift/function keys are incorrect.
Anyone have any idea about how to get back to my previous keyboard layout?
    Thanks,
    Talib

I have an E61, code 05300096, which I now understand should be the Euro-Z with an Arabic keyboard ... but mine has what I believe is the UK keybord.
I'm one of the many that are now suffering with the keyboard layout issue after using the Software Updater to move to the new firmware (2.0618.06.05).
First ... to anyone reading this, check your location code under the battery BEFORE doing this firmware update. Unfortunately I did not learn of this forum until after I started trying to fix this problem.
I've read assertions that mine is a grey market phone but I'm now angry beyond words that I bought this phone from a legit vendor, paid retail price ... and the keyboard worked fine before the update ... and Nokia's not providing me a means to update with an alternate product code to correct my keyboard issue ... and there is no way to go back.
Some vendors even caution about firmware updates, to the tune of "update only if you are directed to" where Nokia's web site recommends updating when software is available.
This is not a $3 phone. If Nokia is can't help us (there are many on the Internet citing this same issue), then I'm sure all us impacted by this will think twice before laying out big bucks for another Nokia product.
    Help us out please.
    Thanx! ... Phil

  • Suggestion to Apple for future firmware update

Can I make a suggestion or two here of some features if there's an upgrade to the firmware of the iPod Video?
-It would be mighty cool to have one more option for Backlight...maybe one where every time it switches tracks, it would light up for 5 or 10 seconds.
-I WISH the timed sleep function could be put on the main menu rather than having to go into the Clock settings first.
-A display option added that would show just the artwork.

The first one is a really good one with an option to set your iPod to light up for a couple seconds when it switches tracks. So many times in the car I won't recognize the track (especially if it is something new I added to iTunes) and I have to touch the iPod to force the backlight on so I can see what it is.
Another one I would love to see, and have send the idea to Apple years ago, is to allow the screen color to be changed rather than being white. One very useful application of this would be to use a dark red screen so when using the iPod at night when you want to look at the iPod the blinding white screen ruins your night vision, so having the option to change the screen color, while cool in its own right, would be great to have a "night" setting using a dark red screen.

  • P1102w and PCL5 support in future firmware update?

    1. HP P1102W Printer with Firmware Version:20110826
Description: when trying to print from a HP Touchpad (WebOS 3.0.4), I receive "printer not supported message". I read that it is due to lack of P1102W's lack of hardware PCL5 interpretation. Will it ever work? Will P1102W have stand-alone PCL5 interpretation?
Comments: I know e-print works just fine, but it is limited to 5Mb. I also know PCL5 support is now only implemented/interpreted in Windows/Mac driver.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
The print language depands on the printer processor and not based on the printer driver.
The printer uses Host-Based print language and do not support the PCL 5 or 6 printing language.

  • FIrst ipod, but needs some firmware updates..

I had avoided ipods up to now because they had no built-in FM radio. Now, one does, and it works much better than my Gen 1 Zune radio, except for the "Live Pause" feature.
Is there any chance that Apple might consider improving this feature in a future firmware update?
    1. Live pause rewind/forward buttons moves throug the buffer in very large jumps, making it nearly impossible to find the place you want to resume listening at.
Suggestion: add fine forward/reverse control via the the click wheel. Center button selects the wheel to move though the pause buffer, in addition to tuning and volume.
    2. It needs a live pause catch-up mode, where it plays back faster to catch up with the current time. (Fast forwarding skips too much material to be useful for this.)
Suggestion: When in delayed playback mode, play back 10-20% faster, without pitch change, (configurable)
    3. If not done already, to preserve battery power, add an unbuffered Live Pause mode, where it does not buffer radio audio until pause is pressed. Once playback catches up with real time, turn off buffering again.
    4. If I have the ipod powered off and locked, it should NOT power up again when I connect the headphone cable.
When it does this, I have to unlock again, press and hold pause again, then lock it again, Very frustrating.
    5. Timed radio recording. Let me set up a recording schedule to catch a particular show (if the headphone cable is connected.)

  • WiFi Problems - TC to MP, since recent firmware update

    Hello,
i found some threads about other people having trouble here, but nothing seemed to fit my situation.
I have 2 Macs - a Mac Pro (Early 2008) and a MacBook (Late 2008). And a Time Capsule, which i purchased sometime between the Macs. Up to now, everything worked perfect, both machines were connected via WiFi to the TC. But since the recent firmware update, the MacBook works fine with the TC, absolutely no problems, but the Mac Pro (a bit longer distance) doesn't work any longer.
This started on Friday (i don't use the MP daily), it was impossible to get a WiFi connection, tried re-entering connection data and so - no success.
On Saturday, i used the cable to check the TC configuration, everything worked fine, and after fiddling around with the setup, i finally got WiFi working again.
Sunday - MP was off all the day.
Today - Just powered it up, no WiFi. When i disable and re-enable AirPort, it gets a connection for a second or 2, but then drops it. If i get a connection, i have a strong signal (all bars black), so signal quality isn't an issue. And before the update, everything worked fine, the only change is the firmware update last week.
The MacBook doesn't have any issues, no matter, where it is located. I'm currently writing this post on it while syncing some home directory stuff with the MP (MB connected via WiFi, MP connected via cable).
So what is this new problem? After damaging USB to complete unusability, Apple now continues with the WLAN features? What comes next? When will all this be fixed?
Meanwhile, i think it was not the best idea to switch to Apple about a year ago. The continous quality drops get painful meanwhile. I wonder when my iPhone gets unusable (which also works fine with the TC, by the way

    Hi again,
okay. It really was the 7.4.1 firmware. This morning, i reverted to 7.3.2, did a full reset, reconfigured everything, and now my network works fine as it did before.
It seems to be important to reconfigure the TC, as just downgrading the firmware didn't really help, while full reconfig with 7.4.1 also doesn't help.
I now turned off the automatic search for new versions on the TC. I will be informed by the AP Express, which has no problems with 7.4.1 yet.
Hope, Apple re-introduces quality control soon and doesn't make the customers be the beta-testers.

  • Zen Micro Photo bugs need to be worked out - firmware update comi

    Hi,
I've had my Zen Micro Photo 8gb for a month & have discovered some interesting quirks: first, I don't believe mine is defecti've, though I've had problems. I have encountered freezing on both the "Zen Microphoto" logo and "rebuilding library" screen; I scoured this forum and the Knowledge Base for answers, trying all that seemed applicable?- I tried disk cleanup and reboot (leading to rebuilding library freezes), reformats & carefully reloading the latest firmware?a couple of times. I've drawn some conclusions:?) Mediasource software is not working for me; when I switched to using only Windows Media , most problems went away.2) For whatever reason, "rebuilding library" can only be accomplished while my Zen is connected to the computer - should this be the case?3) It seems like the times my screen freezes on the "Zen Microphoto" logo I may have held the "on" switch to the side a little longer than necessary; I'm wondering if this is happening because I'm holding the switch on a little too long?Anyway, I love the size, look and sound of this player, so I hope to keep using it. NOTE: can anyone from CREATIVE tell me if there will be future firmware updates? Thanks

  • Suggestion for future firmware release

Hi, I'm proud to be a possessor of an AirPort Extreme and I would reccomend some useful deficiencies for future firmware update.
The ability to specify DNS1 and DNS2 for DHCP Client (I don't want that AirPort resolve itself)
The ability to quickly turn off and on wireless for health and green respect.
I'm thinking at a small application that doesn't restart AirPort but only turn off and on wireless and wired host continue to work.
Obviously AirPort Extreme doesn't have any hardware button to turn off wireless, but this could be a great thing for future models of AirPort...
    Best regards!

Why not let Apple know directly about your suggestions?

  • IMac playing up after firmware update

Hi, recently purchased new iMac lastest one, it has been working beautifully until the firmware update this morning shut it down and I was unable to wake it up using keyboard touch. I had to hold 'on' button down to get it to turn on. Also green light came on beside webcam and it has never done this before. While trying to figure out if the system preferences had somehow been changed by this firmware update, the system preferences application locked up and I have been unable to get back into it since. I don't want to have to keep shutting down the computer just to reset it, it has never had a problem so far, can anyone help? Can I uninstall the latest update? Is there a quick way to restore the system preferences screen without turning off the whole computer?
Any help appreciated, I am not so savvy with Apple yet, still learning.

If it's recently purchased as in within its warranty period, I would contact AppleCare and have them determine what is wrong. The symptoms you describe are not normal and you should not have to be burdened with trying to fix things.
There is absolutely no way to undo a firmware update, but that is not likely to be the direct cause of your difficulties.

  • HT2304 IR Receiver firmware update Apple released an update that essentially changes how the IR receiver communicates with the OS

remote no longer works the likely culprit is a missed IR Receiver firmware update.  Back around version 2.1 or 2.2 of the Apple TV operating system Apple released an update that essentially changes how the IR receiver communicates with the OS.  If your Apple TV missed that update and then later gets updated to the newer 3.0.X firmware your Apple TV will no longer respond to input from your remote, though the light on the front of the AppleTV will blink.  The solution is to load the update manually, but unfortunately that requires ssh access on the AppleTV.

    Thanks Dave,
You are a genius. I can't tell you how much I appreciate being benifit of your knowledge and willingness to share it with others. A thousand times over, thank you!! I burned the little utility to a CD on another machine/setup, ran the little sucker and restarted in OS X like a hoot!!! About 8 minutes later I had the processor upgrade installed and see quite an improvment. Again, thanks and kudos be upon you,

  • Game changed to German language after firmware update

I've been playing "Laura Jones and the Gate of Good and Evil" on my 64gb iPod Touch. I just installed the new firmware update, and suddenly that game is all in German. How can I fix this?

Erm, and the rest of the system applications are in English? Also, is there a option in the game to change languages?
    If not, try this:
Open Settings, and go General>International>Language, and pick, say, French. Once it's done respringing, launch your game, and when it's done loading, quit it too. Go back to Settings (now Réglages) and go Général>International>Langue and pick English. Now launch your game. It should now be in English.
If not, try reinstalling the game. Warning: This will delete you're current progress. This may be worse than playing in German.
If that doesn't fix it, I'd write the developer, and wait for them to update the app. It may just be that it isn't iOS 4 compatible -- Rayman 2 is like that; one can't get past the second level in iOS 4, but can in iPhone OS 3.1.3.
    Hope this helps you!

  • N81 8gb firmware update - language change?

    Hi Everyone,
I've bought an N81 8gb which has Chinese, English, and Melayu as language set. I'm currently living in China and therefore the Chinese language set is crucial; however, I know that N81 8gb is not officially released in China and therefore, there is no official firmware update from China.
My current device firmware is at V.10.0.053 RM-179. If I use the PC suite's software updater, will I lose the chinese language set on my phone? Has anyone lost their languages after updating?
I'm a bit weary to do try because I updated my girlfriend's bought in China N72 which reverted to the Nokia Europe site but the device software only had French, English, Italian and no Chinese after installing the update.

It's not possible to upgrade offline.
The nokia software updater needs an active broadband internet connection to be able to work.
As an alternative you could get our phone updated at a nokia care point.

  • Linksys Firmware Update Process Change

Linksys is starting to rollout firmware updates to router's that have the "Check for Firmware Update" or "Auto Firmware Update" features in a batch process.

Nothing major. Final item, a Galaxy S5 is a single user device.  A Router supports "multiple single user devices".  So if a router dies from an update, that could impact 10+ Samsung WiFi clients.vs. just 1 phone that dies. To me, "scope of impact" and "release management" factor into these sort of decisions...Real world scenario: Someone is in the middle of NetFlix streaming a movie. If I update the router firmware and interrupt that, I might not live to post on these forums Just imagine what more "productive" situations could arise. For ,my phone, if I update it, no one is impacted but me.

I agreed to the Time Capsule 7.6.4 update today, but as it was completing, I received an error. It said to close the page and try again.
I use my Time Capsule as my Airport wireless router and now can't access the Time Capsule to re-upload the Firmware update.
Has anyone else had this happen?
Is there a way to resolve the problem?
Do I need to hardwire the Time Capsule? Then what?
    Would really appreciate some help!!
    Thanks everyone.

Factory reset the TC and it should come back to life.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
As a rule .. wireless is not reliable enough for mission critical work like firmware upgrades.. (Heck I don't think it is reliable enough for backups).
Apple doesn't insist on wired connections.. some other manufacturers do.. and post warnings not to attempt it over wireless. Warnings inevitably read after the failed firmware update btw.. so perhaps Apple have decided to just save themselves the hassle.
I believe it is just good practice to use ethernet for any time that sitting on a branch.. whilst sawing it off (ie failure will kill any future access).. means you always use ethernet for any setting up of a wireless router.. but you see I am old.. with grey/white hair.. and too many dead modems and routers around me.
