SSH & FTP going down randomly
Hi
i have an eMac here.
This EMac is configured to offer:
* SSH Access
* FTP Access (using PureFTPd)
In Sys-Prefs -> Sharing i enabled
* FTP Access
* Remote Login
As this Mac is surveillanced by my Nagios system i have a good method to check if those services are running or better accessible.
Now the problem:
Both, FTP & SSH keep dying after some time. Can be hours or days. Its not related to each other....so from time to time FTP is down....then again SSH is down.
A simple fix is just disabling the service and re-enabling it. But i want to try to fix that permantently.
any ideas ? Missing informations ?
Best regards
fidel
The first, and most obvious problem is that you're trying to use both PreFTPd and Apple's provided FTPd.
System Preferences -> Sharing only knows about Apple's FTP server, not any third-party FTP server you've installed. So you should use one or the other, but not both.
That said I don't think it's your issue, just something that isn't going to work.
As for the problem itself, what do the logs say?

University Wi-Fi going down randomly
Hi,
when I connect my laptop to university's WiFi network the connection goes down randomly (I can stay connected for a few minutes).
I always thought that it was their fault (because they could not handle the high number of people connected), but on Windows it seems to stay connected. Also I don't remember having this problem on my netbook (Lubuntu).
I looked at the output of
sudo journalctl -xb
and I noticed a lot of output from wpa_supplicant saying something about the certificate. Could that be the problem? (I downloaded the certificate from my university's website, it's the link named "scaricarlo").
Here it is the output of
sudo journalctl -xb | grep "\(ntpd\|NetworkManager\|dhcpcd\|wpa_supplicant\)[\[0-9\]*]"
Any ideas?
Last edited by wil93 (2014-01-08 19:27:59)You're saying you're having trouble on linux, but windows works fine on the same laptop? Sounds like a driver issue to me. Could you tell us which wifi card your laptop is using? Perhaps if you have a spare USB network card with a different chipset, could you try setting it up to test whether that card also performs badly? If it does then it's likely a software management problem. If not then I'd go for a driver problem.

Wireless APs going down randomly
Hi All
We have a situation where wireless access points are just going down randomly on our network. The situation is as follows:
We have 2 Cisco 5508 WLCs (licensed for 250 APs each, with more licenses en-route), both running software version 7.2.103.0. Then we have a large-ish number (±300) of Cisco AIR-CAP3502I-E-K9 APs connecting to these two controllers. The APs are either connected to Cisco WS-C2960S switches, or in "older" areas of the network they are connected to WS-C2950 switches. We do not have PoE switches installed yet, so all APs are powered by power injectors (AIR-PWRINJ4=).
Anyhat, all the access points are in FlexConnect (previously HREAP) mode, and they all connect via trunk ports to the switches in order to get the VLAN per SSID working. Both controllers are in the same mobility group, and both are in the DNS as "cisco-capwap-controller" as they are load balancing. The APs are installed about 25m apart in most areas. There is one installation where two APs are about 10m apart, but this is due to the shape of the building in which they are installed. We have no autonomous APs deployed at all...
The problem is that some access points work for about a day, and then they just disassociate with whichever controller they were associated to, and then they just fall off the network completely. Both WLCs, the NCS, and the network monitoring system (WhatsUp Gold) show the affected APs as physically unreachable. Looking at the trunk port on the switch, it shows that the port is up and the line protocol is up, input rate is 0 bits/sec, and output rate is up to 70,000bits/sec. There are no input or output errors on the switch port. Here is the output from one such switch port:

Connecting a console cable to an affected AP is fruitless, as the AP appears to be unresponsive while it is "down". Rebooting the AP, then connecting a console cable works, but then you've lost your syslogs. Looking at the Ethernet interface on the AP, it appears as if the interface is picking up a lot of errors, especially CRC errors, which would indicate a physical cable problem.
I got our cabling contractor out to do a cable test again, and it passes every time. We have them test both the Systimax and the Molex cable installations of affected APs, and all is OK. They use a Fluke MicroScanner² cable tester which certifies the Cat 6 cable from patch lead to flylead. No problems there, and I trust that the cable is 100% as tested.
So I swap the power injector of an affected AP (let's call it AP A) with an AP that is not affected by this (let's call this one AP B), and AP A goes down again after a day, or sometimes only a couple of hours. AP B remains operational as usual. If I swap AP A out with a new AP (AP C), then AP C starts showing the same symptoms after about a day, and then it also just goes down. When "suspect" AP A is installed somewhere else, then it works and stays operational for, well, 58 days now. Changing the switch/switch port also makes no difference.
This happens to one of the APs that are part of the "10m apart deployment", but it also happens to another AP that is completely on its own in a building far away from any other wireless source, so I cannot think that this could be the problem. I happens to an AP that is less than 100m away from its closest WLC, and it happens to an AP that is more than 350km away from its closest controller. All the other APs deployed in our remote campus (350km fibre link) are 100% OK. It happens to APs connected to the older WS-C2950 switches as well as the brand new WS-C2960S switches.
I am at wits end with this one. Where could the problem be? I trust the "Big Green" company that does our cable installations, and I trust the equipment they use. I also trust both Systimax and Molex to be very good products. And I do trust Cisco, as this is the only network equipment we deploy.
Where to from here?
Regards
ConnieThis issue has now been resolved. Details can be found here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/ts/fn/635/fn63537.html.
Here is the short version:
Problem Description:
Calibration between DRAM and processor on AIR-CAP350x and AIR-LAP126x results in Access Points (APs) failing to boot properly. One symptom includes a white LED and no console output.
Background:
The root cause is the DDR memory calibration process that was performed on the Access Points (APs) at the time of manufacture. The fix recalibrates the existing memory hardware, so it will operate more reliably.
Workaround/Solution:
The fix for this issue is now publicly available. Go to www.cisco.com to obtain Access Point (AP) IOS code version: 15.2(2)JA or later and/or WLC software version: 7.0.235.3 (or later 7.0 release), 7.2.111.3 (or later 7.2 release) or 7.3.101.0 (or later 7.3 release).
As of June 2012, new AP3500 and AP1260 products with version ID (VID) V02 are free of this issue. -
hi
We have offlate noticed that a few AP's keep going down at random intervals through the day.
we have setup alerts in WCS throuhg which we get notification. After a restart, it seems to come back, but keeps going down again.
This seems to be happening to almost all AP's,
Could you help me figure out a way to troubleshoot this situation?
thanksWe have offlate noticed that a few AP's keep going down at random intervals through the day.
How are these APs powered? PoE or Injectors?
If you have WCS, then what firmware is your WLC running on? -
Standard Manager going down randomly
Hi,
On our user test system the standard managers will shutdown sporadically and I can not figure out what is causing this issue.
Here is a snippet of the standard manager log file from today:

Please help,
WillieHi Hussein,
This was working before this problem started in Nov or Dec of 2010 and it just seems worse now. Like once every couple of days. The last EBS patch was in Nov.
We have patched the production system the to the same level but it does not have this problem. I was wondering if it was a database connection issue, but there were no errors in the listener or alert logs of the database cluster. I don't know where else to find errors on the apps tier.
I am wondering if I have some thing configured differently on this user test system.
Yes there are many invalid objects due to a data refresh that we have done several times over the last 18 months (custom application).
You want me to apply patch 9577274?
I did review ID 727498.1, but we have not done a DB upgrade recently.
I will be on vacation until Monday March 21. I will follow up when I get back.
Thanks,

The sound on my HP Pavilion dv6 goes up and down randomly on its own
Whenever I watch a YouTube video or play my iTunes music my sound goes up and down randomly by itself. It is super annoying. I just bought this laptop a month ago. What is going on? Can I fix this or do I need to take it back?
Hi,
Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp57501-58000/sp57966.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load. Open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, restart the notebook again.
Has this made any difference to the issue?

DP-K

ASA has to be failed over when primary ISP goes down.
I have an outside 7206 router that is configured with BGP. Behind that I have an ASA 5520 with a failover. Everytime my primary ISP goes down I have to failover the ASA to restablish a connection to the secondary ISP. When the primary comes back on line I have to fail it over again. I have had Cisco TAC look at the ASA and they didn't see anything misconfigured on the ASA. Doesn't seem to be any problems with the router config either. Any Ideas on what could be causing this?
Thanks for your responses. Sorry, I'm new to this. Here are the configs and a simple pic of the primary asa and router the way thery are deployed. I've been dealing with issue for a while. Hoping to get some help here.

I have NAS200 working fine. Of late I found that its performance going down
I have NAS200 working fine. Of late I found that its performance going down. May lot of stuff delated and coppied on these network drives. Looking for some tool to carry out disk defragmentation and scan disc on network drives. How can I do that without taking out HDD from NAS200
Defragmentation of a network drive is impossible. Over the network, your computer only has access on a file-by-file basis, not on a sector-by-sector basis.
If it would be possible to access the disk over the network on a sector-by-sector basis, it wouldn't help anyway because your computer would have to understand the XFS or ext2 filesystem to be able to defragment it, and Windows doesn't understand either.
Furthermore, because of the way XFS and ext2 work, fragmentation is much less of an issue than with e.g. FAT32.
If your NAS200 is getting slower over time, it may be possible that your hard disk is slowly but surely dying, and that what you're seeing is that it's correcting low-level errors by retrying reads and writes. It's probably a good idea to check that you have a reliable backup. You do have one, don't you?
===Jac
Frequent NAS200 Answers:
1. DISABLE the "convert failed logins to guest logins" option to fix permission problems.
2. NEVER insert or remove hard disks while the power is on. NAS200 doesn't support hot swapping.
3. ALWAYS use the power button to turn the NAS200 off, don't just unplug it.
4. Don't trust RAID. Make BACKUPS!
5. To ACCESS the disks directly, you will need ext2 and/or XFS file systems. I recommend using SystemRescueCD.
6. Disks will get HOT with standard fan, use "green" disks or consider replacing the fan.
7. FTP server is insecure and doesn't work behind a NAT router. Use my firmware and SCP instead.
8. MY FIRMWARE supports SSH shell prompt and SCP for secure file access, and allows running other software. -
I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro '15. Summer of 2012, it kept shutting down and making the three beeping noises, so I took it in for repair. I was told that my Logicboard needed to be replaced, so I replaced it, and took my Macbook abroad with me. Halfway through the summer, the three beeping noises resumed, and since I was abroad, I couldn't use my 90 day warranty and take it back for repair. By the time I returned to the US, my warranty ended, and I was told that the RAM actually needed to be replaced. So I replaced that.
In May of this year, my laptop wouldn't start and instead showed a folder with a question mark. I took it to repair and was told it was the hard drive wire that needed to be replaced, so I replaced that. Less than two weeks after, my Mac began freezing whenever I had a YouTube video or song playing- it made short, staticky sounds and then shut down. Now, it shuts down randomly even when I'm not playing videos or songs, and regardless of if it is running on battery or plugged in. Since I got my hard drive wire replaced, I've also noticed that the laptop takes an incredibly slow time to start up.
The last the Genius Bar technicians looked at my computer when replacing the harddrive wire, they hadn't said anything else was wrong with my laptop.
I've spent almost $1000 total fixing my macbook and am quite sick of going through this over and over again. Can anyone help me know what went wrong this time? (I have no apple care) Thank you in advance.Check to see if you've any panic logs -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546.
If so, post the text of the latest.

Wow, this reminds me of what happened with Mavericks 10.9.0 until 10.9.3 and later were released and fixed this problem.
My monitor is a Dell S2440L connected to my Mac mini late 2012 via an HDMI cable.
The monitor goes blank randomly and sometimes a snowy screen like you would see when watching a UHF
channel on an old CRT TV shows up when the video comes back on. This happens while in the OS.
I also have power management problems again with computer not sleeping properly and my Magic Mouse
being able to wake up the computer despite "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" being unchecked.
I also have Wake for network access, power nap and start up after power failure unchecked as well.
Computer sleep and display sleep are set to "never" as I always had it with Mavericks.
These problems occurred after shutting down my Mac and restarting it this morning.
I know using a VGA cable will fix it but I don't want to do that.
Sorry for sounding frustrated but I'm not alone. So many people are having the same issue
of HDMI video blanking out while in the OS.
I love the look of Yosemite but wish I was back with Mavericks 10.9.5 where everything worked
flawlessly and I really mean flawlessly. It was magical. Not a single problem.
I guess we have to wait for 10.10.2 or 10.10.3.
I don't want to go back to Mavericks but if my screen keeps blanking out then my computer is of
no use for work or multimedia.
I'm sorry about the rant.
If anyone has figured out a workaround until Apple can issue another point release, please let me know.
I already tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM several times to no avail.
Thanks in advance.
I appreciate any help.

My iPod fourth genereation is closing apps down randomly shortly after I open them. Even the apps that were provided by apple won't stay open long. I've tried everything they've suggested and nothing has worked. What's wrong with my iPod and how can I fix it? I even reset the entire thing to factory settings and it did nothing.
Also, my back camera won't work most of the time and when it does red scratchy lines appear all over the screen and the picture won't come out clear.I think I fixed the apps, though.
*Turn off your wifi and only turn it on when you want to use it
*Lower your brightness
*Turn off "Push" on notifications and mail and turn on "Manual"
*Return to your home screen and then double click twice and tap and hold one of the apps you've previously opened, when they jiggle tap the red on each app until fully erased.
*Don't use your ipod while it is charging, allow at least a 10 minute charge (fully charged) before using it again.
See if this helps(: ... I still have no answer bout the camera issue. I might be going to apple soon so we will see then. -
MacBookAir is shutting down randomly
I recently downloaded Maverick, and then my computer began shutting down randomly. I cannot even get 5 minutes on it. Also, at the time of writing, it has been plugged in for 2.5 hours, and has only charged from 82% to 93%. This was sufficient timing for a full recharge from 1% 5 days ago. I have tried the resetting the SMC (and all the steps recommended before it, but there is still no change. I've included a screen shot of my Power data. Anyone have any next steps for me? My MBA is less than 2 years old.
Thanks for your help,
rwalsh84Try my steps.
What to do if your Mac shuts off randomly
First, try plugging in your Mac to allow the battery to charge. If it is not a portable Apple computer, skip this step. Wait a few minutes, and then try powering on the computer.
Next, try resetting your SMC.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Then, try resetting your PRAM.
Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM
Note: This will not delete any data.
The NVRAM/PRAM stores information such as speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and recent kernel panic information (if any). You should reset the NVRAM/PRAM if you experience issues relating to these functions.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Turn on the computer by pressing the Power Button.
On the built-in keyboard, press and hold the Command (⌘), Option (⌥), P, and R keys before the gray screen appears.
Continue to hold down the keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chime for the second time.
Release the keys on the built-in keyboard.
Then, try repairing the disk permissions using Disk Utility.
Repairing a disk’s permissions using Disk Utility on the Recovery HD.
Note: This should not delete any information or files from the disk.
Repairing a disk's permissions can help solve various file-related issues.
To begin, make sure your external disk that you are repairing is connected to the computer. If you are repairing an internal disk, skip this step.
Make sure the computer is powered off before continuing.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold both the R and Command (⌘) keys on the keyboard until the Recovery partition loads. If this does not work, shut down the computer, press the Power Button to turn on the computer, and then hold in the Alt (⌥) button immediately after you press the power button. Then, select the Recovery HD partition to boot up in the Recovery HD partition.
Select Disk Utility.
Once you are in the Disk Utility app, select the external drive from the sidebar on the left.
Then, choose the Repair Disk Permissions button on the right.
If this does not solve your issues, you may have no choice but to reformat the drive using Disk Utility.
If that does not work, try reinstalling OS X but not erasing.
Reinstall OS X
Note: This will not erase any data on the disk. However, it is highly recommended that you create a backup before continuing.
Reinstalling OS X can solve various problems such as corrupt system files.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
Press the Power Button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold both the R and Command (⌘) keys on the keyboard until the Recovery partition loads.
Select Reinstall OS X and then choose Continue.
Follow the instructions.
Then, try erasing and reinstalling OS X.
Erase and Reinstall OS X
Note: This will delete all data on the disk. Back up important files before continuing.
Erasing and then reinstalling OS X can give you a fresh start, making your computer exactly as it was whenever you received it from Apple. This can solve various problems such as corrupt system files.
If this does not work, shut down the computer, press the Power Button to turn on the computer, and then hold in the Alt (⌥) button immediately after you press the power button. Then, select the Recovery HD partition to boot up in the Recovery HD partition.
Select Disk Utility and then choose Continue.
Select your startup disk (Macintosh HD by default) from the left.
Select the Erase tab.
Choose the Format pop-up menu and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled), enter a name for your disk, and then click Erase.
After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
Select Reinstall OS X and then choose Continue.
Follow the instructions.
I hope I helped.

Ok so I'm a design student at a community college (about to graduate soon and will be continuing on getting my BFA) I have all of the creative cloud suite. I have Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, etc. Recently I started having problems with all of the programs. Whenever I work in the programs they would run extremely slow. Recently, I tried to save a .eps file that was only about 1.2 GB and it took me an hour to save, and this was when I was working off of my computer desktop. When I place the .eps file in Indesign, everything would go blank and it would freeze up. Also I had an error sign popping up from InDesign saying "out of memory". Im not sure if that is related to my computer's hard drive or indesign itself. I just started using creative suite so the creative suite is pretty new to me. Sometimes in Indesign when I do the Command+w to preview the whole project, it would be completely black and showing nothing and I would hit escape and the whole software screws up. Then I would do a force quit on the software and then Indesign would say there was a serious error and must shut down. That error message has been popping up several times now. I also talked to Apple support and they suggested me doing a Repair disk utility (which I am currently doing right now) and also recommended me contacting Adobe since they know their software. I checked software to see if there is any updates that is needed but everything is up to date. I'm not quite sure why its acting like this so I'm reaching out both to Apple and Adobe to see if both can help me solve the problem. If anybody had experienced this problem before and could help me troubleshoot this issue that would be great.
I installed the creative suite about a year ago, and this just started happening last weekend. I didn't think it would be a problem and that it would last for a day since I was working on InDesign all day and Illustrator and it usually goes away after I finish using the programs. But this has been occurring for about a week now and has not gone away. and yes the other programs are running slow. I was trying to resize some images for a client and Photoshop was acting extremely slow when I was trying to resize the image and also place an image into a 8x10 document in Photoshop. I'm not sure how to find my system specifications.
All design programs running extremely slow and takes forever to save and sometimes shuts down randomly? -
MacBook Pro Retina shutting down randomly
Hi
Some shile ago my MBP Retina 15" started shutting down randomly while i use it. Then it takes like 10-30 minutes to cool down and then it can be turned on agin. If you try to switch it on earlier than it sounds like it's starting as ususally but the screen is either black from the very beginning or goes black in a couple of seconds while starting up.
BTW the thunderbolt port refused to work some while ago, if you plug in a thunderbolt display the MBP will switch off much faster than if you work on it as a lap top.
Any ideas what this can be and how it can be fixed?
The system message that pop-up upon restarting the MBP is below:
