SSH/PAM login issue with fresh install: edit wiki or raise bug?

I recently encountered an issue while setting up Arch on a headless server, and was wondering if I did something stupid, the documentation should be improved or I found a bug.
The problem was that after adding a new non-root user, I couldn't SSH into that user account. I could still login to root via SSH fine. After some research and playing around I found I was able to login by setting UsePAM to no in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. I later realised that this was because I set the login shell for this account to /usr/bin/bash, and not /bin/bash. The problem is that currently /usr/bin/bash is not in /etc/shells, and the default /etc/ssh/sshd_config sets UsePAM to yes.
As this is a new default install, and I followed the wiki during the install, I feel that this should have been documented somewhere. I don't mind changing the wiki or reporting this as a bug, just I'm not sure which is the correct course of action:
1. Should I have known to use /bin/bash and not /usr/bin/bash, i.e. the login shell needs to be in /etc/shells? => edit the wiki [1]
2. Should /usr/bin/bash be in /etc/shells? => raise a bug against filesystem [2]

The wiki should be changed. /bin/bash is the correct entry in the list of shells.
I cannot, however, remember off hand in which context this came up. I just remember this was the developers' response. So I can't point you to evidence to confirm even though I do know that is the correct answer.

Add a command to toggle the auto-mute with the same key, perhaps?
Anyway, that command in my i3 set up does not effect the auto-mute mode so there may be something else going on in your system.
Ooops -- my mistake, my system does that as well...
Maybe something to do with pulseaudio -- I didn't have pulseaudio when I used i3 and I didn't notice that problem then.
EDIT: It might be wise to open a fresh thread for this specific problem -- be sure to use a descriptive title to get the attention of the sound experts (not me!).

  • Issue with new install of JDev 11.1.0.1 (JDK-less full edition) on Windows

    Hi all,
Just downloaded the latest patch release of JDev 11. I uninstalled the old one and deleted the directory (including the beahomelist file) and did a fresh install. Note that I downloaded the studio edition base install. My PC has JDK 1.6.0_10, which is what I used. When I first started JDev, I did NOT migrate settings. The log window shows:
ERROR:  An error occurred while building the default domain.

My PC is running Windows 2008 server standard - the older version of JDev worked fine. I'll download the Windows install to see if it fixes the issue.
    John

    Thank you for your reply,
I mentioned the older 2003, not the 2008 version of windows server, that is, it is what the customer uses and consequently I must follow that standard!
By the way I use java sdk version 1.6.0_13 .
    Any helping hand avaiilable?
    TIA!

It sounds like a issue with FireFox and Workspace.
LiveCycle Workspace 9.0 - End User Issues
** New for LiveCycle ES2 SP1 ** Problem logging into Workspace 9.0 using Firefox 3.6.x in Windows
When you log into Workspace 9.0 using the Firefox 3.6.x web browser in Windows, you are unable to enter text in the User ID or Password fields. The current workaround is to select another window (or empty area on the desktop), reselect the web browser to reset the focus, and then enter text in the User ID or Password fields.
You can see it in the release notes at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/9.0/releasenotes.html#EndUserIssues.
    Hope that helps!

  • Macbook Pro stuck in restart loop with fresh install

    Hello!
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) that I have been running Snow Leopard on up until now. I had been meaning to upgrade to Mavericks for a while, but had just never gotten around to it. Over the last month or so, my Macbook has been running really slow, hanging on the spinning beachball every few minutes for a few seconds (sometimes up to a minute or so). So I figured a clean start might be the best way to go, and while I'm at it, I might as well upgrade to Mavericks.
I backed up all my data, and then I created a Mountain Lion bootable usb (I had trouble making a Mavericks bootable usb from Snow Leopard, and since I had bought Mountain Lion for my desktop, I just decided to do a fresh install of that, and then upgrade to Mavericks). I had no problem booting to the usb, erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion. However, after the install on the usb, my mac restarted and got stuck in a restart loop. It will chime, show the apple logo and spinning gears for a few seconds, then the gears stop spinning, and then the mac immediately restarts (this time displaying a message saying the mac has recovered from a shutdown in a number of languages), and the same thing happens again.
I was able to boot into the recovery partition, checked the permissions, found some that needed to be fixed, ran the repair permissions, verified the disk and was told the disk appears okay. Tried to then restart and same thing.
I have reset SMC, NVRAM, and none of these change anything. I booted in single user mode and ran fsck -fy, and recieved a message saying modifications were made, rebooted, same thing.
I have booted in verbose mode and the system restarts at the same point every time, right after displaying a message that says
SMC::smcReadKeyAction Error: (and then something with "BEMB", it goes by really fast so its hard to read exactly)
I have managed to boot into safe mode, but this has not made a difference. On one of my boots into safe mode, I went ahead and made a Mavericks bootable usb, and restarted the process: wiped the drive, installed mavericks, but I am in the exact same situation. I can still boot into safe mode.
I have seen some other issues that people have posted, but most involve the system freezing after the apple screen (not restarting) or do not involve freshly formatted HDs.
I'm just tying to find out if this is a hard drive issue, or if my mac itself needs to be retired. It has had a pretty long life (being 5 years old), and one of the RAM bays doesn't work (it is only running 4GB of ram, not sure if that can cause a problem with the boot cycle).
Sorry if thats a lot of information, I've been trouble shooting this for a few days. But thanks for any help you can offer!
    A strange note:
-when booting from the mavericks usb, I got stuck in the restart loop a couple of times. I managed to get past this by clicking the mousepad a few times right after the gears finished spinning. The mouse became visible, the apple screen shifted color a bit (went from a bluish gray tint to an orangish gray tint), the mouse became visible, and I got to the reinstall menu as normal. As far as I can tell the clicking may have been coincidental, but it was the only time I was able to boot the usb, and I wasn't going to risk restarting to test that, and then not be able to boot again.

Hey, thank you for your reply! I didn't have everything backed up, but I have a lot of my important stuff saved, though, so that's somewhat of a relief..
As far as my hard drive is concerned, would I have to send it in somewhere to get it fixed or would I just have to get a brand new one? If so, how much? Sorry if I seem a bit amateur, but this computer is my first personal computer, and I'm really lost without it!

  • Login Issues with license check

    Hi All,
We have had some issues with starting the database after a virus attack on our network. We have now sorted this out with the help of an Oracle DBA. We can now start the database as well as the central instance fine.
But, when our users are trying to login, they are getting the error "Logon not possible (error in license check). I have also tried with the SAP* and DDIC users in 000 client. But no luck.
    O/S:    Windows 2000 Server
    DB:     Oracle 9i
    SAP:   4.7 EE
    Can someone help me plz?
    Thanks
    Vijay

Regarding the error "Logon not possible (error in license check),
    Few suggestions:
    1. Please copy and paste the output from the following commands:
       -> saplicense -version
-> saplicense -install trace=2    (this generate dev_slic file)
       -> saplicense -get
       -> saplicense -show
    2. DB connect problem... Sometimes this error can occur when there are
connection problems to the central instance. During logon system checks
if a valid license is installed by reading the entries in table MLICHECK.
SAP* will bypass the MLICHECK check.  So, sometimes this error can occur when there are connection problems to the central instance (message server). This could be a temporary problem. Please try to restart your SAP servers if this helps.
    3. See SAP note 359944, 193800
    4. Copy and paste the output of command "R3trans -dx"
    5. Check the file /etc/services for missing entries, example like
       sapms<SID> 3600/tcp
       sapdp00    3200/tcp
       sapdp99    3299/tcp
       sapgw00    3300/tcp
       sapgw99    3399/tcp
    6.  use the message-server-test tool 'lgtst' as per SAP note
64015 to see whether you can connect to the server.
    7. can you ping the message server ? check parameter rdisp/mshost, IP
    address on host table ?
    cheers,
    Vincent

  • Login issue with solaris 10

I m facing a problem with login to solaris 10

Any one has any solution to this problem?

I have tried this on my Dell computers and Brand new HP computer's and have no problems with them. Has any one come across this type of problem. This only happens on the S-510 and 530 models.
One thought...: Possibly a old Novell client installed on those models... I remember having an issue with users having to open the advanced login options, goto the windows login box. There the previous logged in user name needed to be cleared and login would be transparent again.

  • Configuring PAM login modules with weblogic 6.1

I am trying to configure my own PAM login module to work on the same JVM as weblogic.
I have my own security policy that does not rely on weblogic however when trying
to login after creating a specific login context :
    LoginContext loginContext = new LoginContext("XXLogin",subject,
    callbackHandler);
    loginContext.login();
The JVM tries to invoke weblogic's own internal server login module. It looks
for the callback the login module uses and then fails.
The same problem ocurrs at weblogic startup. Weblogic appears to overide the -Djava.security.auth.login.config=jaas.config
with their own login configuration file:WLHOME\lib\server.policy. Is this supposed
to be a standard PAM login configuration file or weblogic's own interpretation
of it ? (It is called a policy file which normally relates to grants and permissions
in JAVA). Anyway we modified this file to include our own login module under a
different AuthenticationConfigurationName. However weblogic attempted to use our
login module as well as their own. According to the jaas api when creating a login
context the application configuration name is specified however weblogic appears
to be ignoring this !! Also we have found that a PAM configuration file that we
had did not parse with weblogic, however it worked with the standard PAM configuration
file parser. This implies that weblogic does not use the standard parser. Any
    help welcome !!

    Hi Parthasarathy,
Thanks for the pointer. Your suggestion was the first step to getting our Security
Model to be compatible with the WebLogic 6.1 model. As suggested I removed the
the default LoginModule (ServerLoginModule) from the Server.policy file and replaced
it with our Login Module. Then we defined JVM properties for the weblogic.management.password
property in the startweblogic command file to supply the authentication information
    required by WebLogic.
The next problem that I encountered was that we use files in the jaas.jar for
Authorisation when I tried to access these files (e.g. javax.security.auth.Policy)
I got a sealing violation as the JVM had previously loaded other class files in
this package from the weblogic.jar (as weblogic uses these files for authorisation).
It was possible to get around this problem by putting the jaas.jar ahead of the
    weblogic.jar in the classpath.
After this I just needed to set up permissions in the weblogic.policy file for
    authorisation and we were there.

    Please note from the documentation:
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs61//security/prog.html#1039659
that WLS uses the default Login Module (weblogic.security.internal.ServerLoginModule)
    to gather authentication informatino
during server initialization. To replace the default Login module, edit
the Server.policy file and replace the name of the
default Login module with the name of a custom Login module.
Please inform whether the above information is useful. Thank you.

I am trying to configure my own PAM login module to work on the sameJVM as weblogic.
I have my own security policy that does not rely on weblogic howeverwhen trying
to login after creating a specific login context :
    LoginContext loginContext = new LoginContext("XXLogin",subject,

    loginContext.login();
The JVM tries to invoke weblogic's own internal server login module. It looks
for the callback the login module uses and then fails.
The same problem ocurrs at weblogic startup. Weblogic appears to overidethe -Djava.security.auth.login.config=jaas.config

to be a standard PAM login configuration file or weblogic's own interpretation
of it ? (It is called a policy file which normally relates to grantsand permissions
in JAVA). Anyway we modified this file to include our own login moduleunder a

login module as well as their own. According to the jaas api when creatinga login
context the application configuration name is specified however weblogicappears
to be ignoring this !! Also we have found that a PAM configurationfile that we
had did not parse with weblogic, however it worked with the standardPAM configuration

  • TTY problems with fresh install

    HP Compaq 8510W
    Fresh install of 32-bit Arch
I have had 64-bit Arch running on this laptop without incident---until the last upgrade broke Flash..:(  (But that's another story.....)
Now, I have just installed 32-bit Arch and--after doing some setup and configuring--the TTYs quit working.  Ctrl-Alt-F1, F2, etc. produces only a brightly-colored screen with random letters and numbers.  A re-install cured it, but only for a short while.
The symptoms suggest an issue with a video driver, but I don't know what driver is used when toggling to a TTY.
As I write this, I am running from Ubuntu, and all is well.
    Any ideas??

    Hello Neighbor,
Are you encountering these problems after starting an X session when you try to switch back to a console, or does this happen in the absence of Xorg?
What is your video architecture in that HP?  My Pavilion is Intel GM45 (intel915).  These types of problems went away for me about a year ago.  On Intel, if I recall correctly, it was imperative that you not load any framebuffer console mode kernel drivers in the presence of KMS.  The only module that can be loaded is the KMS Intel frame buffer support module.
You might check the modules you are forcing, and you might play with disabling KMS from the kernel command line.
I am in Northeast Pasadena (Brigden Ranch area).  Are you anywhere close?

  • Issues with recently installed quicktime

I will admit having the occassional crashing issue with premiere, but since in installed the newest version of quicktime (I believe it's 7.4) premiere holds out for about an HOUR maybe! if I'm lucky, usually if i attempt anything audio editing, it crashes and I'm back to square one.
it seems to hold for exporting files (through the media encoder or to AVI) but the second one attempts to do any editing, extending or shortening clips, down it goes with that lovely "Premiere has experienced an unknown error and will attempt to save your project" (Which it doesn't).
Given I'm working with a large project it is annoying for the 20 minute pause for it to re-load, only to have it go down a few minutes later.
    It doesn't matter the scene/sequence I'm editing.
I do need quicktime for some of the projects I'm working on right now, but if it's the cause of this issue...I'm not sure sure it's viable.
I've uninstalled it, and I'm going to give it a run for the night see if that helps, but if it doesn't, any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    H.R. Crystal

Thanks Jon. I'm going to go download and install 6.5.2 now.
I JUST LOVE! how everyone tells you to have the most up to date Quicktime, but ack! seems to cause issues.
I'll see if this fixes my issues.
Appreciated the note on the version.

  • Solution: iPad/iPhone Login issues with IIS as Reverse Proxy (Android and Windows Phone works)

    Hi,
I had issues with iPad/iPhone access from external and tried a lot. Now I found my solution I like to share.
I setup a IIS on Windows Server 2012 with ARR 2.5 and Android and Windows Phone could login but not iPad and iPhone.
The IIS Log on the reverse proxy showed:
    2013-02-26 12:03:31 <IP> POST /webticket/webticketservice.svc X-ARR-CACHE-HIT=0&X-ARR-LOG-ID=1996c8d7-09d0-4310-8da4-a8dfb7940e28 443 - <ClientIP> Lync%202010/1.6+CFNetwork/609+Darwin/13.0.0 - 401 0 0 124
    2013-02-26 12:03:31 <IP> POST /webticket/webticketservice.svc X-ARR-CACHE-HIT=0 443 - <ClientIP> Lync%202010/1.6+CFNetwork/609+Darwin/13.0.0 - 502 3 12018 93
First Request gets a 401 while anonymous. Second try would be with authentication but it never reached the internal front end server.
After I installed a fix for ARR
http://forums.iis.net/t/1195560.aspx/1?ARR+502+3+Bad+Gateway+0x80072ef2+2147954418+The+supplied+handle+is+the+wrong+type+for+the+requested+operation the Apple Devices could login.

    Hi,
This resolved our problem too!! So happy after 2 weeks of messing around with just about every setting recommended from all types of forums and rebuilding our reverse proxy I was at a loose end.
Our environment is Lync 2013 Enterprise, Lync 2013 Edge, IIS as Reverse Proxy on Server 2012 using ARR 2.5
We had Android and Windows clients working but no iOS devices at all. In the iOS log we were seeing
<h1>Server Error</h1></div><div id="content"> <div class="content-container"><fieldset> <h2>502 - Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server.</h2> <h3>There is a problem with the page you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. When the Web server (while acting as a gateway or proxy) contacted the upstream content server, it received an invalid response from the content server.</h3> </fieldset></div></div></body></html>
When the client was trying to retrieve from the webticketservice.svc
    2013-04-11 17:19:44.659 Lync[4970:6c61000] INFO TRANSPORT TransportUtilityFunctions.cpp/907:<ReceivedResponse>

    HttpHeader:Date Thu, 11 Apr 2013 16:22:25 GMT
    HttpHeader:Server Microsoft-IIS/8.0
    HttpHeader:StatusCode 502
    Installed the HotFix from here:-
Hotfix for Microsoft Application Request Routing Version 2.5 for IIS7 (KB 2732764) (x64)
Rebooted the Reverse Proxy and iOS clients worked straight away for both Lync 2010 and Lync 2013 on both iPhone 5 and iPad both.
I hope this helps others as I was losing the plot :-)
    Cheers

  • 10.2.8 client login issues with 10.3.9 server

Hi we have just updated our computer lab to 10.2.8 client computers and a 10.3.9 server but I am having issues with the client computer loging into the server I am using LDAPv3 and when I try to have a user login to the server from the client at the login screen I get the login window shake.I can login fine from a 10.3.9 client computer.Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Check your 10.2.8 machines Directory Access and make sure LdapV2 is not checked and also that Ldap V3 is checked and configured correctly. I found that if I had both Ldapv2 and v3 on my 10.2.8 clients could not log in. 10.3 clients only have the option for Ldap V3, so it is not an issue.

  • Widgets issues with recent install of Mountain Lion on my iMac.

Since installing Mountain Lion my screen periodically locks up an shifts to the right. I noticed along the left a charcoal background with large dot pattern was showing while the screen was shifted and locked to the right. Then a few times the widgets screen popped up on its own and I realized the background matched what I was seeing when the lock ups happen (I have never used the widgets). So it appears the Widgets screen keeps trying to launch spontainiously. I did notice the Fetch widget had an alert on it and with some investigation found that Fetch Works no longer had a widget for Mountain Lion, so I just deleted it. This I thought fixed the bug but now today the shifting and locking up has started again.  I did take the machine in to have a Genius run a diagnostic because of the hard drive issue with the iMacs but he said all looked fine and reinstalled Mountain Lion while I was there to see if that helped.. but it did not. Has anyone else run into this? If so, were you able to fix it? it actually just happened twice while I was typing this and I had to sit and wait for it to not be locked up so I could complete...

You can use the Mountain Lion USB disk that you created or you can press Command and R keys on boot, but it will download OS X Mountain Lion from the Internet

  • Login Issues with World of warcraft

    So here is my issues....
Several weeks ago I had an issues with my MacBook pro locking up when I attempted to log in to World of Warcraft. As soon as the login info was inputted, and I pressed enter, the game froze at login but the game sound continued to play. I was able to resolve the issue by removing all my 3rd party addons and *** folder, and deleting my cache files for WoW. The game worked fine until last night when the issue returned.
I spent about an hour on the phone with Blizzard Tech support, who came to the conclusion that I needed to download the 10.5.5 combo update. That didn't fix the problem. I attempted the usual Addon/***/cache delete, and that didn't work. I even updates all the secondary programs for Leopard and that failed to help. I finally decided to completely reinstall the game and see if that would work; and the same issue persisted. My brother, who also runs a Macbook pro but with 10.4.11 is having the same issue. My PC works just fine, though, and the WoW Beta servers and PTR realms all work fine.
The only thing that seems to be different from when it worked normally was the update of Mac OsX to 10.5.5 and the newest patch for WoW. I know I am not the only person with these issues, as the WoW Mac forums are exploding with similar issues. I was just hoping that maybe someone would have insight as to how to fix the problem, seeing as how Blizzard's tech team has taken a break for the weekend.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Try this out:
Go to your Applications > World of Warcraft folder and Get info (right-click for menu or command-i, I think) Click the lock at the bottom to make changes. Make sure everyone has read/write permissions. Then click the cog/gear at the bottom and apply to all files in the folder.
