SSHD on 2010 MacPro

Using MacPro 2010, Mavericks up to date, 27" Apple screen
Three weeks ago, interested by the performances of Seagate Desktop SSHD 2000GB, I installed one of them in place of 2TB "classic" HD,
Immediately, performaces of the Mac where much better, but, since about 2 weeks, progressively, I've been facing to several little dysfunctions: softwares, cameras, mails, impossibility to shutdown Mac, ..... it was really a mess to work with it !
After several tests, I came back this morning to my 2TB prévious HD and everythings went allright immediately !
For the time being, I'm unable to allocate the problems to the Mac system, or Seagate SSHD, or ........
So I'm interested to know if some other people have got the same problems ?
Effectiveley, it should be a contextual problem with my materials (Hards and softs)
Or simply a defective disk...
Thanks !

Wading through this review of your drive, performance on things like booting should be noticeably improved and some other things should be snappy too, which is what you've found. However, given the very small SS portion of the drive, it just can't compete with a true SSD in terms of overall speed. But it should continue to work, albeit like a regular HD, which it sounds like it's not doing.
Unless you've installed something in those 2 weeks which is not on your HD that could be causing the problems, I'd suggest checking the SMART status in Disk Utility to see if it's failing. Even if it's not, see if Seagate will honor its warranty and provide a replacement. Just be sure to wipe it clean first.
But if you're looking for reliably improved performance, The hatter's advice will get you there.

Trying to figure out why is there a keystroke delay many times in Pages and Numbers? I'm on a 2010 macPro running Lion

I had a similar problem when working on a long Pages doc (40,000 words). The glitch only occurred on this one Pages file and affected no other applications. I fixed it by duplicating the file, trashing the original and working on the new document. I have no idea of the cause of the problem.

  • Off Topic: Anyone with 2010 MacPro driving 3 monitors?

I'm having a heck of a time with 3 monitors on a 2010 MacPro/ATI 5870. They work, but display preferences will not remain set if system sleeps past the screen saver. Wondering if other 2010 MP owners with 3 monitors are seeing the same thing.
Posted here becuase this place will most likely have 3 monitor users, most other forums only have users with dual monitors at best.
Sorry, I know it's not Photoshop related.

    Scott,
I run a Mac pro 2008 with two matching OEM Apple ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
    a 30" ACD, 24" NEC, 20" Sony
Like you I had the crashing problems under 10.5 (including graphic anomalies)
    and font related crashes 10.6-10.6.4
10.6.5 has brought the crashing way down for me
BUT I'm wondering if you get blurry-pixelated icons on your three-screen setups?
These occur in the dock, on the desktop and in folders...
    PS:
I don't have any sleep issues under 10.6.5 (except one time just after I updated, Ps was a rock and Finder was a total flake with both side monitors stuck on iTunes album art screen saver).
I let my Mac Pro deep sleep after an hour (so I sleep it over night and several times a day).

  • 2009 & 2010 MacPro upgrading for today´s Video-editing (Premiere Pro CS6 & After Effects)

I have now two  MacPro´s: MacPro4,1 (Early 2009/Nehalem) and MacPro5,1 (Early 2010/Nehalem) and I was wondering how to get the best of them for video-editing with Premiere Pro and After Effects (CS6 or later CC) for todays standards.
    The specs of the machines:
    MacPro5,1
    Early 2010 Nehalem
    (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-quad-core-2.8-mid-2010-nehalem -specs.html)
    2.8GHz     Quad-core Xeon W3530 (256k level 2 cache, 8 MB of "fully shared" level 3 cache)
    32GB RAM "1066 MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM" (PC3-8500) modules (4 x 8GB)
ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory is installed in a double-wide, 16-lane PCI Express 2.0 graphics slot.
single 1 TB (7200 RPM, 32 MB cache) Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive.
    + I have added a 480GB SSD-drive via PCIe (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/PCIe/OWC/Mercury_Accelsior/RAID )
The 480GB PCIe SSD-drive is now the boot-drive and gets writes over 500MB/s and reads over 600MB/s testing with "BlackMagic Speed Test"-application. The 480GB SSD-drive that is connected via PCIe-card has also two eSATA ports on it. How could I take advantage of them? Is this just a bottleneck, what would you think. Would I get the same results if I had just Samsung 840 SSD installed with adapter-device to the internal drive bay 2.5" SATAII connections?
    What about the graphic card?
What would you suggest to do for the setup to maximize it´s potential (For now it´s working fine)? Would it be good idea ome 7200rpm hard-drives for media and cache storage or do I need that or can I see significant improvements over it since there is still 3 3,5" internal hard drive bays with SATA II connections (and the two eSATA ports).
    MacPro4,1
    (Early 2009/ Nehalem)
    (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-eight-core-2.66-early-2009-neh alem-specs.html)
    - 8-cores: powered by two2.66 GHz Quad Core 45-nm Xeon X5550 (Nehalem) processors with a dedicated 256k of level 2 cache for each core and 8 MB of "fully shared" level 3 cacheper processor.
    - 34GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512 MB of GDDR3
A lot like the MacPro5,1 but does have a bit different graphic cards and more memory and cores.
    Any ideas?

First and foremost: keep an eye on that 480G PCI-E SSD that you dumped a lot of money into.  Those OWC drives aren't known for their robustness or reliability (OWC folks will argue with that statement.  Ignore them).  Since OS and apps are easy to re-install, it may not be a big deal.  But don't put any of your projects on it, even though it's a fairly quick device.
Second, start adding SATA drives to the other 3 bays.  Fill them up with the biggest drives you feel comfortable buying.  Make one of them a 10k RPM drive for your scratch space.  The others can be 7200RPM drives; since you're limited to SATA2, there's not much use in trying to crank serious disk bandwidth through the system.
Video cards.  Get rid of those OEM garbage cards.  Drop them into a chipper/shredder, in fact.  Contact this guy about getting flashed nVidia cards that will work in both Macs, and will help with Pr and Ae.  Dave can sell you a flashed GTX780 that will boot (with grey Apple screen) and run in the Mac just fine.  And it'll outperform anything Apple has ever sold for those Mac Pros.

  • It is NVIDIA 4800 for MAC Compatible with a Mid 2010 MACPRO,... 5,1

I would like to know if my MACPRO Mid 2010 (5,1) it is compatible with NVIDIA FX 4800 for mac or NVIDIA 4000
    thank you

Apple no longer lists it, Nvidia web site though:
Go to • About This Mac
Click on the • More Info button
    Select • Hardware
The model identifier should be MacPro3,1 or MacPro4,1 (2008 or 2009) or later
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_quadro_fx_4800_for_mac_us.html
And if you are going to spend say $798 for Q4000 (Amazon, Mac Pro version) maybe wait and see but 10.7.4 support for a GTX 570 2.5GB might do a better job even where Quadro use to (due to drivers, not hardware itsself)

  • OSX Mountain Lion fails to install on 2009/2010 MacPro

I have a Dual Xeon dual cores MACPro and just got the new OS however it fails to install on the MACPro with the error message  "Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer"
My current OS is 10.7.4, does anyone have any imput on this issue has this been seen by anyone else?
    Any help would be apreciated.

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
I'm guessing that you have a Mac Pro 1,1 or 2,1 model from 2006/7. They cannot run Mountain Lion.

  • Kernel panics in mid 2010 macpro ( MacPro5,1) - Help please

Well I haven't had a kernel panic in any of my Mac for some years, so I was quite suprised to have 2 of these in my Macpro recently.
So I really could use - please -  some expert advice here.
    Running OS X 10.6.8
    I have:
    1) Verified the boot disk using Disk Utility, no repairs needed.
    2) Repaired Disk permissions using Disk Utility, there were quite alot that needed repairing.
    3) Checked and verified all preference files on the boot volume.
    4) Not added any new hardware or software recently, other than Apple's software update.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Robert

  • Capture Problems with DV using CS5 Prem on 2010 MacPro

    Hi
    I have the following
    - 2010 Mac
    - dual 6 core cpu model
    - 48G
    - 2 x Cav black 2tb drives in stripe for scratch and a SSD for boot
    - 5870 primary card and gt120 as a secondary
I am trying to import a bunch of old DV tapes on a Panasonic NV-MX300 camera via Firewire (i do have a 400 to 800 firewire converter). Although there isnt a definition for this camera in the CS5 config it looks to pick up the essence ie standard dv etc.
When I import a tape it starts up ok but being an older unit et al playback glitches every now and then (slight pixelation etc). The timecode looks to be intact from start to finish. The problem is when premier encounters a slight glitch it stops the capture.....so I have to then kick off recording for a new clip where it left off etc etc etc. I have deselected things like stopping on dropped frame etc.
Now if I use iMovie to do the import it goes through no problems even with the same glitches being there.
Is there a setting Im missing, is it CS5 being overly sensitive?
    Thanks in advance.
    Jim

Hi Jim, frustrating is the right word. Currently I've reverted to
capturing on our old Canopus card and then bringing the AVI file into
    CS5. Technology...
tx for your response - I will let you know if I get an answer.
    regards, h

  • 2 HD 5870s in 2010 MacPro

I'm looking for some info on a two 5870 crossfire set up. There is already one 5870 in my system. I'm thinking I'm going to by a auxiliary PSU to go into the empty drive bay(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=56810 47&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cmmmco=VRqCjC7BBTkwCjCECjCE)
Does any one know how difficult this installation will be or if there is a superior option?
    Thanks

Actually, that's enough to power two large GPU -- my other computer is a PC with 1200W PSU and it runs three very power hungry nVidia GTX280 in SLI, plus four WD Velociraptor hard drives.
Besides the original poster said he was considering using a supplementary PSU, and I have one too. Rather than overstressing the PSU it appears lack of cable connectivity is the problem.
then again, I am ANTI-GAMING on a mac
So why did you bother posting in this thread? That's not very helpful. Plus, why should you care what other people do with their Mac Pro?
    Answer
Apple has this page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2838 which explains that Mac Pro (Original) and Mac Pro (8x) needed +Expansion Slot Utility+ to manage the PCIe lanes; but that Mac Pro (Early 2008) and Mac Pro (Early 2009) the slots are permanently set where Slots 1 and 2 are both x16 revision 2.0 slots.
Unfortunately this support document doesn't cover Mac Pro (Mid 2010) but I imagine it will be the same, which is good news as it means both PCIe x16 should remain at x16 if both slots are filled (and not drop to x8 as they did in old hardware).

  • Windows 7 startup time taking an eternity on MacPro 2010

    Hi All,
I have a MacPro 2010 with the following config:
    - 2 x 6 core 2.97Ghz processors
    - 6GB RAM going to 24 GB RAM as soon as I get a chance to install it
    - 1 SSD for OSX boot, 1 1TB for Windows 7 only, 2 x 2TB for striped raid (OSX use)
    - ATI 5870 (centre screen) and a GT120 (left and right screens)
I went through the motions of starting bootcamp assistant, selecting the drive and then inserting the windows media and then waited for the windows install gui to start. This took a long time 1hr+. I just went and did something else so I didnt think about it much. Once Windows installed and the machine rebooted it took a while for the little windows logo animation above "starting windows" to come up eg 5 minutes. Again did something else and didnt think much of it. Now once windows was started (surprised to see all three monitors come up with 2 different video cards...ATI and NVIDIA, bonus!) it worked ok and sooner or later got a blue screen of death. The machine reboots and I get to bootup options ie the your machine crashed do you want safe mode, etc, or in 30 seconds the default will be started...blah blah.....now the machine has my full attention and I am looking at how long things take to start. The 30 second countdown on the boot options screen took about 16 minutes to get to zero ie every second took ~30 seconds to decrease on the display. So once windows (I assume around the point where the windows logo does its thing over the "starting windows" bit) takes over in its boot sequence things are quicker but during initial boot there is a massive lag somewhere. Is this normal for 2010 macpro and Win7?
Once in Win7 the Win Exp Index = 7.8 for everything bar disk which is 5.9 and thats with a raw install etc etc. So ok.
    Thanks
    Jim

    Stefan,
So to set the scene, my MacPro is situated about 4-5 meters from my sitting position. Therefore I have 7mtr monitor cables and some USB devices in front of me..... anyway you get the picture Im sure.
What was causing it were two generic USB extender cables (they have a box with circuitry on the end that boosts the signal for longer USB runs). They were giving me problems with the devices I tried to use (unreliable) so I simply stopped using them with USB devices a while back but never unplugged them from the Mac. I did however add another brand extender cable and used it without issue for many years. When I put the new mac in I simply reconnected everything not giving it any thought.
So anyway, I have removed the two culprits from the mac left the better extender cable (plus other USB devices) there and its all fixed. For the record I did add them back on just to be sure and it is definitely them.
I must admit I still cant figure out why one of those cables would slow a boot option page counter by 30 times, a power drain issue maybe?????

  • MacPro (mid-2010) has become terribly slow. Getting dizzy watching the spinning beachball.

Yosemite has become terribly slow. It may take >1 min. to open a program in the dock (e.g. Word). At RARE times, it perks up for several seconds and then it's back to crawl. I've run DiskWarrior to no avail. Clicking on almost anything produces the beachball for 15 to 30 seconds.  Switching Start up disk to my other int. HD or my ext. HD produces no change.   I need advice!!

  • Dual Monitor Startup Problem on MacPro - Solved

I have a model 53135LL/A = mid 2010 MacPro with 8 cores, DUAL monitor cards and monitors, 24GB memory, running Lion 10.7.3.  It is important to note that I am also using the Apple bluetooth Magic Mouse and the smaller, bluetooth keyboard (no numeric keypad).  This unit was supplied with Lion in December 2011 and has had a startup problem from the beginning as follows:
1 - when starting from a cold start the dual monitor positions are reversed from the correct position
2 - additionally the USB and firewire connected devices (e.g. Wacom tablet, 2 card readers) do not function properly.
The workaround for me has been to start the system, wait for the logon screen, then click restart. Upon restart everything comes up and functions correctly.
Specifics on my setup and starting problems:
1 - My main monitor (Monitor #2) is a large gamut monitor that is located to the right. This monitor is connected to card slot 1 as that is the faster card slot (pcx16). The second monitor (Monitor #1) is an ordinary unit and connected to card slot 2 (pcx4). The monitors are set up as an extended desktop.
    2. The Wacom tablet (Intuous 3 wide) is connected to USB port on rear of machine. CF card reader by Delkin is connected to Firewire on rear of machine, and an SD card reader is connected to USB on the rear of the machine.
    3. My dock is positioned on the left side of the left monitor. The menu bar is along the top of the left monitor, and all desktop icons are on the left monitor.  The right monitor has no items on it.
On a typical cold start, as mentioned above, the apple logo appears on the right and then the logon screen appears on the right.
If I proceed to logon at that point, all the desktop items move to the right monitor and the computer thinks the positions are reversed.  In other words, it behaves as though the right monitor (#2) is on the left of the desktop and left monitor (#1) is on the right.
Additionally, the Wacom tablet using either pen or mouse does not map over the full desktop range.  If I use either card reader and then eject the card, no further card insertions will be recognized.
To fix this, I simply restart the machine thru the apple menu and everything comes up correctly.
I had discovered, that instead of completing the logon on a bad cold start, I could simply restart from the logon screen and all would work correctly.
On occasion, the logon screen would come up on the left monitor (as it should do) and in that case, if I log on all works correctly.
I have worked with Apple support on the phone, clearing setup ram etc. Have had the unit in to Apple store for hardware check, all OK.  Next suggestion was reload OS and start over - no thanks.
SO - Here is the latest.
If I turn off my keyboard and mouse before starting the machine, then wait for the logon screen to appear - It starts correctly, with the logon screen on the left.  I can then turn on my keyboard and mouse and all works as it should.
Bottom line - there appears to be a startup issue with Bluetooth devices from a cold start.  Note that once the machine has been used for a bit, I can turn it off for short periods of time (e.g. 30 minutes) and it will start correctly even with the mouse and keyboard turned on.

That's how dwm behaves. I believe dwm's multihead support is rather lackluster out of the box. You might want to check out some of the patches they have, and ask around in the dwm hackers thread.
I currently have dwm simply draw status on all monitors, but I'm investigating separate status bars per monitor. We'll see where that takes me. Dwm is a tinker's WM!
i found the patch , thanks!

  • System preferences fails to recognize a new ext. HD to which my MacPro has been cloned (with SuperDuper). I want to check to be sure that it will function as a start up disk.

I have a new 3 TB Western Digital ext. HD. I used Super Duper to clone my MacPro HD to the ext. HD. I want to be certain that I can use it as a Startup disk in an emergency. To test this, I wanted to restart with the new drive as the startup disk.  The disk image is on the desk top and the computer recognizes it but in System Preferences>Startup Disk, it does not appear. Any ideas?    Mid 2010 MacPro w/ Yosemite 10.10.1
System Report>System Info>Storage lists the new ext. HD but System Preferences>Startup disk does not show it.
    Many thanks.

I did not see anything about GUID there. I formatted with Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but I think I erred there. On the left column, there is a list of items. Next to the bottom, it lists my HD on 2 lines. On the very bottom line, after an indent, the HD is listed once again. I selected the indented lower line to clone to. I'll bet that I should have selected the upper line.
When I click on the upper line, Disk Utility blank space after "Format" fills in with MS-DOS (FAT).  I'll change that to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and clone to that line selection.
You gave me the idea to re-check Disk Utility and recognize what I think was my error. However, I am not going to prove that. I shall install Yosemite on the ext. HD and go from there.  I never would have thought of that. Thank to y'all and that includes LINC.  Great help!
