Ssid help?

i was looking up aboutt security and ssid's on or off etc and thought i'd check my setup from my wireless laptop i can see my network name as linksys_SES_21164 (I made a note of that ) however when i try to get onto IE to get to the options for changing SSID broadcast i can't remember what i changed the password to ????? doh !!! any suggestions (other than go to the bottom of the class!) i just can't remember what I did other than it suggesting i change the password from admin?
cheers in advance Gordon

sorry no luck here . you will have to reset the router and re-configure from scratch.....no way to recover the password .

    Hello
Cisco wireless products have the option to offer to the wireless clients both encryption methods, TKIP and AES and even WEP on the same SSID. This can be configured on the GUI and CLI but what you have to be aware and be careful is that this is not the standard. Even though Cisco can offer this, some clients won't understand that, they will get confused and disconnect or just not be able ro connect at all.
We are talking about encryption here not authentication so to answer your question: yes, you can configure several encryption methods on the same vlan but it is not a best practice and regarding authentication, it is not possible to configure different authentication methods on the same SSID.

  • Wireless bridge re-association

    Hey Guys,
Need help with a 1252 in bridge mode. The 1252's are not re-associating after the non-root is dropped. Previously at the same location, the 1310 bridge would re-associate without issue. Is there a command I'm missing somewhere? Should I up the retries?
    Thanks in advance

Check for the configuration on the 1252 bridge as misconfiguration may be causing the issue. Also check if the same config is present on 1252 as it was on 1310.An SSID is a unique identifier that client devices use to associate with the access point or a VLAN supported by the access point. The SSID helps client devices distinguish between multiple wireless networks and VLANs in the same vicinity and provides access to VLANs by wireless client devices.
Check if "Allow Broadcast SSID to Associate" setting in the "AP Radio Hardware page" is enabled for the association to take place. If this option is disabled association will not take place.

  • AP Groups VLAN showing all SSIDs - Need help.....

    Hey everyone!
I am hoping I can find some help with configuring the AP Groups VLAN feature on a WiSM + WCS ver 4.2 environment. I enabled and setup AP Groups VLAN for a campus type network acording to the guide here:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008073c723.shtml
The issue I am having is that even though I enabled and setup the AP Group VLAN as well as assigned the interface / network the AP to the group, all the SSIDs still broadcast on that AP where I only want one SSID to be present. I am testing this in a building that is an extension of another and only have 1 AP thus far so I know I am not picking up the SSIDs from other APs.
Anyone have any suggestions or can help? I would greatly appreciate it.....
    Thank You!

    Hi Ed,
The feature you are looking for is called WLAN Override in 4.x release versions
    Enabling WLAN Override
By default, access points transmit all defined WLANs on the controller. However, you can use the WLAN Override option to select which WLANs are transmitted and which ones are not on a per access point basis. For example, you can use WLAN override to control where in the network the guest WLAN is transmitted or you can use it to disable a specific WLAN in a certain area of the network.
    From this doc;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/4.0/configuration/guide/c40wlan.html#wp1114777
Once you create a new WLAN, the WLAN > Edit page for the new WLAN appears. In this page you can define various parameters specific to this WLAN including General Policies, RADIUS Servers, Security Policies, and 802.1x Parameters.
**Check Admin Status under General Policies to enable the WLAN. If you want the AP to broadcast the SSID in its beacon frames, check Broadcast SSID.
Note: You can configure up to sixteen WLANs on the controller. The Cisco WLAN Solution can control up to sixteen WLANs for Lightweight APs. Each WLAN has a separate WLAN ID (1 through 16), a separate WLAN SSID (WLAN name), and can be assigned unique security policies. Lightweight APs broadcast all active Cisco WLAN Solution WLAN SSIDs and enforce the policies that you define for each WLAN.

  • Urgent help on ssid disabled

i'm an entire noob on routers. and i decided to hide my ssid through the web interface. however, i realized that my laptop can't connect to it! can i enable ssid again? i've checked on the linksys website but unfortunately i don't have the linksys monitor etc. my cousin's laptop doesn't have it too. btw, my laptop is Acer aspire 5583WXMi under windows vista home premium and my cousin has an MSI laptop. and the router's wireless-G WRT54G. please please help me.. thanks

Rlx man, just enable it, type the router ip on ie 192.168.1.1 (default), login is admin and pw is admin too (i guess) and enable it.
When you had your wireless network configured, than your laptop will know that ssid, so you can disable it to nobody see that u have a wifi network.

  • Need help configuring: 2 wireless routers with 2 different SSID's on one network

    Hello everyone:
I've been reading around on the forum trying to find the answer to this question, but have not found any clear cut answer that satisfies all my requirements.  A more in-depth explanatiion.
I have 1 IP address coming in via cable modem.  I want to configure two wireless routers (one secured with WPA-TKIP, and one unsecured--a "guest network" if you will) each with different SSID's.  The secured network would be for my server, home PC's, IP webcams, DynDNS updating; while having an unsecured wireless router that friends and family can access.  Ideally, I do not want anyone who accesses the unsecured wireless router to be able to get access into my secured network.
Can someone please tell me if this is possible.  I think it is based on some posts I have already seen, but specific details about how to do it would be appreciated.  Additionally, my DynDNS has to still be able to update with my ISP's IP so that I can access my server and home webcams.
    EQUIPMENT
    2 - WRT54G
    1 - EZXS55W
    1 - WVC200
    1 - WVC54GC
(all of my stuff --webcam, server, dyndns, etc -- is working currently on my secured network. I just need to add the unsecured network)
I know this is a lot, but I would appreciate any help.  THANKS.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You must have the main WRT54G router connected to the modem. Set up the secured wireless network on the main router. Connect all your wireless computers or devices to the main secured wireless network.
Let's consider the IP address of the main router is 192.168.1.1.
Now connect only one computer to the Port 1 on second wireless router.
Open the setup page of the second wireless router. Change the wireless settings, SSID, unsecured.
Change the IP address of the second router to 192.168.2.1. Save the settings.
Connect the cable from the Ethernet port on the main router to the Internet port on second wireless router.
Power cycle the second wireless router.
Now the guest computers connected to the second wireless unsecured wireless network will be able to access the Internet only. They will not able to see the computers or devices connected to the first wireless router.

  • SSID, Encryption Code and Network Password Help

I have just purchased an iFit Module and it is asking me for the following info:
    Network SSID
    Network Encryption Code
    Network Password
I have absolutely no idea on where to find this information. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
The computer I have is a Desktop Mac OSX and operating system of 10.5.8

On your Mac, hold down the option key while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your screen.
There will be a check mark next to the name of your wireless network name. This is your SSID.
Look for the Security setting. That is your Encryption Code.
Your Network Password is the wireless network password that you use to connect to your wireless network.

  • Help With Multiple WAPs & Multiple SSIDs

I just inherited a wireless LAN that is using 5 1230 WAP devices, all using a single SSID configured for 1) open authentication, 2) mandatory WPA key mgmt, 3) hex SSID key, and 4) cipher TKIP encryption. Everything works fine, but now I have to add a device to the network that only supports 13-character ASCII SSID and 128bit encryption. So I changed the settings on the 1230 closest to the new device to 1) optional WPA, 2) cipher TKIP + WEP 128bit, and then 3) created a new SSID with a 13-character ASCII key. In the web interface Association list I can see the new SSID and the device listed, but the device has no IP address and I can't ping it across the network. I've tried using a static IP and DHCP on the device (it's a Toshiba projector) and it just can't communicate with the network. Do I need to make the configuration changes to each WAP in the network? What else am I missing? Thanks!

Error I see when debugging is that although the projector has the correct SSID etc and attempts to auth, fails due to not supporting mic key hash

  • SSID Spontaneous Change - Help!

Would there be any reason for my SSID to change without me doing it myself? Did my router get hijacked? What next?
I was in the middle of doing work on my laptop and it all of a sudden stopped accessing the internet. I checked the wireless connection and it listed a different SSID for my router than what it should have been. I know that this is incorrect because I recently hooked up a wireless Lexmark printer. Ethernet still works however. Please advise.
edited to add: My router is a WRT54G v3.1 with WEP 64-bit encryption.
Message Edited by Max Power on 07-31-2008 02:11 PM

It is possible that someone hacked your WEP encryption.  Using tools that are readily available on the Internet, it only takes about 5 minutes to hack a WEP key.
However, more likely, you simply hit the SES button on the router, by accident.
To learn more about the SES button, see this:
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3700&p_created=11515...
To secure your router, you really should be using WPA2, or at least WPA encryption, and a strong password.  Here are all my tips for setting up wireless security:
To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.
Where to find the router settings: The router's login password is usually on one of the "Administration" pages. The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1
First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Next, leave the router at its default settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.
To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.
Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:
WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best
WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "enterprise". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password" ).
The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.
Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.
And don't forget to give your router a new login password.
Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password, should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, or passphrase must not have any spaces in it.
Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minumum of 24 random characters.
One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2.   The patch is located in SP3.
    Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet. Even a long random character password will not protect you with WEP. You should be using WPA or preferably WPA2 encryption.

  • Help - trying to change SSID and password

I would like to change my Verizon Fios network name and password from the factory settings but I am experiencing the following problem:
Keep in mind that I have a Dell laptop.
    1. I go into the Verizon Online portal to change the settings, and successfully enter the new SSID in the box and click "Apply" (not the problem)
    2. Then, my wireless network disconnects. The name changes to what I just entered in the list of available networks, but there is a red "X" next to it and I am unable to connect. The message says that the settings entered do not match those configured for the network.
It seems like my computer refuses to accept the new network name and password, so even though I am able to change the network name and password, the computer is remembering the old and will not connect to the new.
    Any suggestions?

sound like your stored password is wrong
    for win 7
    Open Network and Sharing Center.
In the Tasks pane, click Manage wireless networks.
Right-click the connection you want to delete, and then click Remove network.
In the Manage Wireless Networks - Warning dialog box, click OK.
    for win 8
In the list of availble networks, right click on the network and select forget this network.
Then reconnect to network. You will be prompted for the password.

  • Need help configuring multiple VLANs and SSIDs

    Hi,
We bought a Cisco SGE2000P 24Port switch and 10 WAP4410N access points. Our intent is to provide a secure network to our LAN, and a guest network to the Internet.
We are thinking 3 VLANs would be best for this: VLAN 100 connected to the LAN, VLAN 1000 for the Internet Router and Filter, and VLAN 1100 for the Guest Wireless access.
We have the switch configured for all three of these, and 1 initial access point configured for the VLANS, too.
We have not yet moved the current Internet connection to VLAN 1000 because we aren't sure how to setup routing between VLANS.
Here are some specifics on how the traffic needs to route:
    1. We have the DHCP server, which is the PDC, handling both scopes for the LAN and Guest VLAN.
    2. The web filter in VLAN 1100 needs to authenticate with the DHCP server as there are different filter rules based on authenticated user. Any users coming from VLAN 1100 will have a default filter rule without requiring any authentication.
    3. Certain traffic coming in from the Internet needs to be able to get to VLAN 100. The router has a built-in firewall that handles NAT and port forwarding, so as long as traffic can be forwarded to VLAN 100 we should be good.
    4. Traffic on VLAN 1100 (guest Wireless network) should only be allowed to go to Internet (VLAN 1000).
Right now I have the VLANs configured and the ports assigned to the Access Points are set for TAGGED and on VLAN 100 and VLAN 1100.
The SGE2000P has the following IP addresses assigned to the VLANS:
    10.7.3.252 - VLAN 100
    10.7.40.254 - VLAN 1000
    192.168.254.254 - VLAN 1100
Has anyone been able to setup a similar configuration? We have scoured the Internet for documentation but it seems to be very difficult to find!
    Thank you!
    Gary Smith

Based on your description of a 'Hybrid Port' this sounds like Cisco's 'Multi-VLAN Port' that was a feature of the 2900XL/3500XL series switches. This feature has however long since gone......
With a Cisco switch an access port supporting an Access VLAN & a Voice VLAN is effectively a Trunk with only one Tagged VLAN and the Native VLAN:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport mode access
    switchport access vlan 10
    switchport voice vlan 100
This results in the same configuration as:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk native vlan 10
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 100
With the exception of CDP packets being sent advertising the Voice VLAN.
With regards to other IP Phone vendors and DHCP Vendor Options - the answer is it depends....
Nortel use Vendor Option 144 to inform the IP Phone of the Voice VLAN and Option 128 for the Server (PBX) to use. Ericsson uses Vendor Option 43 that can be configured to tell the IP Phone the VLAN and the Web server to read the config file from.
I don't think you will get this working automatically with your 3Com switches, you can however manually configure the VLAN on the Cisco IP Phones.

  • New FiOS GigE Wireless 'N' Router has slowed our wireless speed to a crawl...need help!

This past Tuesday I installed the new N router.  Also, we upgraded to FiOS Quantum 75/35 (previously 15/5).  That was activated the following day.  I can't complain about the internet speed to our pc since it's wired.  Speed tests showed we were getting what was advertised. :-)
For the wifi, I can't figured out for the life of me what's causing our devices (e.g., our Nexus 7 tablets) to have a link speeds of 65Mbps one minute and then drop down to 5 or even 1.  The same situation was happening with my HTC Incredible II phone, but I think that connection was tapping out at 54Mbps.  The bottom would just drop out of the signal for some reason.  Other times we couldn't even connect back in.  The devices would say they're not in range even when they were in front of the router.  Not sure if I fubarred the router install or what?  I just swapped out the current Fios router for this new one.  Pretty straightforward.  At first, I logged into the router software with the defaults, but then I changed the the username, pswd, SSID, etc. to match what I used previously.  I thought it was working fine the night of the install but not so much after Fios got bumped up in speed the following day.  Maybe just a co-inky-dink?
I know you never get the same speeds compared to a wired pc but this seems worse (wifi-wise) than before the new router came along.  I've read that the 'N' routers can be finicky to set-up to run properly.  Maybe a setting or two is off?
I don't know if the fact that my son's netbook's wifi card is only b/g compatible would slow our network down?  At this point I'm grasping at straws!  I talked with tech support last night for 40 mins to no avail.  I got the usual story about wireless devices running slower than wired ones, that these smaller devices aren't capable to maintaining higher speeds (which I'm not sure I agree with 100%), the more active devices you have slows down your network, etc, etc.  I get all that.  But something is going on or actually, it's not.  LOL!
Why I don't agree with the above statement I mentioned is because I have my tablet at work now and the wifi speed is 54Mbps and it's constant.  So it seems to have no problems with this speed, unlike what I was told over the phone.
Let me know if I can provide any further technical details that'll make it easier to help diagnose our wifi issues.
Thanks for listening to me whine ,

    Thanks for the help, Hubrisnxs.
Here's an update since I got home:
Nexus7 (N7) took a min or so to connect to wifi when I got home.  When it did, speed said 65Mbps.  So I ran speedtest.net and got 27/20.  Shortly after that I tried again but it was hesitating.  I checked the speed and it was down to 5Mbps.  Brought it upstairs to router and pc, and eventually it was back to 65.  Ran speed test a few more times with similar results.  I did notice that the connection would intermittently come and go.  Not sure why.  Looking at the wifi section  on my N7, it says our network is out of range and the N7 is 2' from the router.  Every now and then my network will go to the top of the list and it'll say it's obtaining ip address, then secured with wpa/wpa2 psk and it's locked in.  So I hit the connect button and it's out of range again.  Of course, while I was typing it decided to connect after 10-15 mins of trying/nothing.  Says, signal strength excellent, 52 Mbps.  Spoke too soon.  It's off again.  Crap!  Back on again but speed was 19, now 5.
I did check router settings and this is what I have:
    Performance mode ('n')
    WPA2 AES
    Channel 1
    nonbroadcasting SSID
Maybe I'll try channel 11 next.....
Just for the heck of it, here is the results from verizon speed test on our pc (wired of course):
