SSID off connection dropped

Just picked up AppleTV last night and spent hours trying to get connected to my network. I have a D-Link DI-634M with WEP and SSID Broadcast OFF. I cannot connect to the network via the "Other" selection in the network setup. After I enter my network ID I keep getting "Cannot connect to network (0)".
When I turn on SSID I can connect but if I turn off again the connection drops.
I have two Macs on my network, one a PowerBook that connects with no problem with the SSID off.
I would prefer to have my SSID not broadcast.
Any help or suggestions. I already read most of the posts but have not found any good solutions.
Thanks

There has been a lot of argument with having your SSID turned off or on. Back when Wireless Access Points where starting to hit the market, turning off SSID was a great way to add additional security.
These days, there are scanners that can locate an SSID even when it's off. My opinion, is to just turn SSID on, and make sure you're security key is a good length with a mix of characters. If your router supports it, replace your WEP security with WPA or WPA2 security.
Turning your SSID off, just makes youre computers work harder because it has to keep sending out a signal to make sure the device is still there.
Just my 2 cents.

  • Airport connection dropping off when computer sleeps

Starting with the latest 10.4.8 update my airport connection drops when the computer goes to sleep. No amount of configuring will get the computer to recognize my airport. Turning off the power to the airport, waiting, and re-connecting does no good. The only way to get wireless is to restart. Once restarted the airport connection is re-established without any configuration and continues to be fine until the computer goes to sleep. Hard wiring ethernet works at all times without problems.

    thanks,
i read the doc, looked in the system prefs where my re-connect was set to "preferred" and there was only one wpa network listed. i deleted it from the list then re-added per the apple document. will see if this works.
in my own mind i don't think this is the solution but am keeping an open mind. the weird thing about my situation is that after the computer sleeps there are no available networks under the airport menu. i know in fact there are 4-6 in my area. after restarting the 4-6, including mine, networks are all there and my network has been connected to.

There is an update avaialbe for Ford systems to correct bluetooth problems. You need to update your system.

  • Airport Connection Dropping Off

Has anyone else had trouble with their Airport connection dropping off all of the sudden during a long download or transfering files across the network? If this is a common problem...I hope Apple is working on it.

I am getting the same thing. After starting a transfer of file, after awhile, it will state the wireless network has been change or comprimised (excuse my spelling) and the airport will be disable and enable in a minute. Then the finder stops responding, I cannot force quit out it and must restart the computer.

  • RE1000 Connection dropped and SSID visible

Hi to all, I've two big problem with the extender in object, the first one is the wifi connection dropped, tested with 2 mac and 2 iphone, this is very boring because every 2-3 the devices are offline. The second problem is that I can't hide the SSID while with my router I can. What should I do?
    Some specs.
    Router: Linksys/Cisco X2000
    wifi: mode = mixed
    channel amp = Auto (20 o 40 MHz)
    channel = standard
    SSID tranmission = hide
    protection mode = WPA2 Personal
    firmware v = 2.0.01
    Extender: RE1000
    Automatic configuration DHCP
    Wifi = manual
    firmware v = 1.0.02

To resolve intermittent wireless connection, you need to perform the following:
    i. Reducing Wireless Interference
ii. Customizing Wireless Settings of the ADSL Gateway
iii. Checking the Placement of the ADSL gateway
Here is the link for solving the problem if the connection is dropping: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=95fb621ead264dda8c438f655f710630_4261.xml&pid=80&r...
Second, there is no such feature in RE1000 which can disable the broadcast of the SSID.

  • Wireless Connection drops after a few moments

    Hello everbody!
Background: I have a cheap laptop with a windows only ACPI module, so I have to set acpi=off at all times anyway. I tried Ubuntu, which has the wireless problem too, but instead of repairing something bloated like Ubuntu, I now found my way to Arch to make it right from the beginning.
If the wireless problem gets solved, I want to go on installing the nvdia driver, maybe configure xmonad. (I want to try KDE4 for fun too though, eyecandy you know ) Simple working desktop without getting my laptop heated up like windows does.
The problem: I set up my wireless connection like the wiki says:
-The original SSID was "FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7270 Annex A" which I tried to escape with \ and using 'ssid'. This wouldn't work at all, if you have any explanation for that I'd love to know it. I changed the SSID to something without spaces and special characters and the connection would work. But it would be nice to change it back to the original.
-So it works now. Fine, I thought. But the connection drops after a few moments and I have to "killall wpa_supplicant dhcpcd" and start them again to make it work again. For a few moments only. So I went through the logfiles and found error messages which Google wouldn't help me solve on my own. Now I'm asking the Arch specialists here
Note: Using the partedmagic livecd, the wireless connection works out of the box and absolutely stable. I believe even a bit faster than under windows. So it has to work perfectly, I just don't know how to make it in Arch yet.

Thanks in advance to anyone helping me! I really really want to get Arch going. It's ideal for this laptop, no wasting of disk space, ressource friendly, the temperature doesn't go up as much with less cpu usage I guess..
I've written quite a bit, but hopefully this makes it easier for you to help me! I've included all I thought which could be useful.
    Greetings from Germany,
    Fenris

The easiest solution might be to setup NetCfg somehow with your wifi card and access point.  Have you tried that?  Can you find your card's chipset on the wiki?(chances are that your particular chipset will need a firmware put into /lib/firmware.  Again that's found on the wiki on the NetCfg or Wifi page, I forget which sorry.)  Those are two places where I'd look for good information.
By the way, your rc.conf is way out of date.  You should look at updating it by using the recent rc.conf.pacnew file that you'll find in the /etc directory.

  • WRT54G Ver. 2: When modifying any of my wireless settings connection drops.

Using a WRT54G Ver. 2 router. When I modify any of my wireless settings my connection drops as soon as I save the settings. I've tried resetting the router and updating the firmware, neither have worked. I've had no problems with this up until now, it's worked perfectly before. I'm not sure what could be causing this problem.

When you change your wireless settings, any user who does not have the correct settings (SSID, encryption method, and key)  in their wireless adapter is supposed to be kicked off the network !   This is what wireless security is all about.
To fix this problem, when you update the router's settings, you should be using a computer that is wired to the router.

  • [SOLVED] WiFi connection drops

    Hey guys,
I'm having some trouble with my WiFi connection lately as it tends to drop the connection every like 2-10 mins.
It is not directly linked to any specific action, it just happens while browsing the web, watching a video or chatting.
It's definitely not hardware related either as I do not have any connection losses when running windows on the same laptop (Dell Latitude E4300).
lspci: 0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100

Is this some known bug or is anyone else having the same problem? I couldn't find anything specifically similar to my problem on the forums and the rest of the web but maybe you guys know how to fix this?!
    Cheers

You can try out to load the module with
    modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 swcrypto=1
or, to make it permanent, create a file /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf containing
    #/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
    options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 swcrypto=1
That did it for me (i had the same problems: "wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:11:22:33:44:55 by local choice (reason=3)"). Don't know, if both parameters are needed, wasn't patient enough for testing.
Big maustu! that did the job for me as well.
This problem may be related to iwlwifi and some adsl routers. Everything was ok for me until we changed internet provider. The new provider (Fastweb, italy). placed their own router. Since then, my connection drops every 15 minutes or so and then it hangs. I have to restart network in order to reconnect.
I tried disabling networmanager and connecting with wpa_supplicant and wpa_supplicant.conf and fiddling with the file templates but the problem persisted.
I did pacman -Syu after we got the new router. Just to verify that it is the new router causing the problem I downgraded iwlwifi to previous version and the problem persisted. I didn't bother downgrading the kernel though...
Booting the same pc with another distro that loads iwlagn everything is ok. Another pc with ubuntu that uses iwl3945 is also fine. The problem seems to be just with iwlwifi, my network card and that f...g router which I have not access to.
My network card is Intel WiFi Link 5300.
The logs in case it really is a problem with iwlwifi and someone know how to deal with it.

  • Connection drop iMac to Apple TV - OSX Lion

    Hello.
Hope someone might have a solution. Ever since i changed to OSX Lion i have had a really irritating bug with my Wifi. While browsing, downloading and doing everyday stuff my connection is fine.
However when streaming movies and tv-shows to my Apple TV (2nd) i have been getting som nasty connection drops. Its not always but to often to be anoying since i havnt had this problem before.
Scenario: I can start a movie and watch almost an hour when all of a sudden the connection drops on my iMac Late 2009 - OSX Lion 10.7.3. Everytime this happens my Wifi icon turns gray and i need to shut the Wifi off and turn it on again and all works. But once it has started the connection drops every 10 min or so and i need to reboot the machine to be able to watch the movie like "normal".
The connection between my Airport Express and the Apple TV is no problem and works flawless but my Mac cant seem to handle the "heat". I didnt have this issue on SL so im a bit bugged about it.
    RSSI: -45
    SPEED: 130
    This is what ive tried.
    1. Repair the permissions thru the OS, and the Command and R at start up, including the "resetpassword" thing.
    2. Update firmware on my Aiport Express and downgraded since it just got worse.
    3. Updated the airport utility, but needed to install back the old one since the new for Lion doesnt support the switch between 2.4 and 5.0 band.
    4. Reset PRAM
    5. Reset SMC
    6. Rebuild the connection by deleteing and resetting the router.
    7. Done some cleanup with OnyX.
Now im out of ideas since nothing seem to work and i hate that i have all this Apple gear for thousands of dollars and the f**** Wifi ruins everything.
    Anyone?
    Cheers
    Chris

    I have the same issue

  • Home hub 3, broadband connection dropping

Hi, just a few days ago I recived my new home hub 3. The reason I wanted the upgrade from the hub 1 is because the broadband connection would drop and also the old hub would reset it self constantly.
The new hub is much better in terms of not resetting itself, if i try and watch something on 4od etc, youtube, it feels like any stress and the braodband connection drops, I had this on the old hub but it feels like its happening more now.
So much so I decided to make a paint version of my wiring so someone can maybe help me out.
    http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r173/guysy1110/routerproblem.png
Sorry the paint image came out much smaller than I wanted.
The main phone line is dowstairs in the lounge, its split into 2 using a 2 way splitter, one goes to the main phone which has a microfilter attached, the other plug leads up to the spare room and there a phone box (sorry not sure what its called) is in place, this box was split into another one because a long time ago there was a router that lived in the spare room (the split box is unused). Probably confusing people now, but the main box upstairs in the spare room is extended into my room and then a microfilter is used and then goes into the hub.
The extension cable is FAR too long, possibly 10m of cable wound up and tucked behind the drawers. Could this be a problem? I guess so.
So my main questions are, if both the router and main phone have new microfilters on, what other causes could keep my router dropping the broadband connection? the extension into my room is FAR too long possibly 10m which is wound up behind my drawers, first off im going to get a shorter cable.
Also the microfilter is closest to the hub, would it be better at the first source downstairs, or even in the spare room?
Any suggestions would be great. thanks.

Im reviving this thread, so far from the phone box upstairs Ive shortened the cable, It still goes into my room but now instead of having a ridiculous 15m amount of calbing unused Its a straight 3m from the other room to mine.
    This has slightly improoved things.
However the hub still suffers and drops the broadband connection when under "stress" when the phone rings it sometimes drops, and when downloading files it drops halfway through if the file is large which is a massive pain.
On the downstairs master socket I removed the facia and did a quiet line test on the inside socket, there was no noise. I used a corded phone. I wasnt sure if it mattered but I tested all other sockets using this method and none had any noise.
I phoned BT and was advised to take the hub closest to the master socket, but if i do this I have no wireless card in my PC so cannot connect, The obvious option is to get a wireless card but that will cost money. As will buying the power lines.
Any suggestions? I guess plugging the hub in downstairs and trying to connect to something is the best option.
    Any advice please?

  • Wifi connection drops down. [SOLVED]

Hi, I'm having some issues with the wifi, in my notebook lenovo b5070. The main problem is that the connection drops down after 20, 30 minutes. I tried to change from NetworkManager to Wicd, but that didn't change anything. I also tried to create a profile and connect me through netctl, but again that didn't change anything. Other issues that I'm having are: Sometimes I can't even connect to the wifi, or if I can connect finally, and I try to request some website, the browser keeps idle and finally shows a "Server not found" message. Also the wifi signal seems pretty fine. I also tried change the tx, rts to the max with iwconfig, but this didn't change anything. I'm running out of ideas. Any idea?

So long I tried as Gusar said to loading the rtl8723b module with those params:
    sudo modprobe rtl8723be fwlps=0
    sudo modprobe rtl8723be ips=0
So far by now, the connection hasn't dropped (one hour since I made the change)
But is quite strange that when I do
    [astinx@compu ~]$ more /sys/module/rtl8723be/parameters/ips
    Y
I mean, the parameters changed or not? I also tried with setting with N instead of 0.
    EDIT:
The drop downs come back shortly after. I find quite strange that I cannot manage the power from iwconfig
    [astinx@compu ~]$ sudo iwconfig wlp9s0 power off
    [sudo] password for astinx:

  • Cisco VPN connection drops on airport extreme on OS X 10.6.7

I recently bought Airport Extreme and I must say the wifi coverage and strength is amazing compared to the DLink or Belkin routers that I tried. THe whole thing setup like in 2 minutes. Love it.
Now the problem. I use CISCO VPN provided by work a lot as I work from home frequently. I have found that the VPN connection drops like in 2-5 minutes of connecting. I looked through the several threads and apple response " to use NAT-T in CISCO VPN preferences". Only thing is that I did not see any NAT setting options in preferences and also I am unable to edit anything in the CISCO VPN pref (probably things locked out by our IT who provided the vpn software).
I also tried someone's suggestion that I switch to manual radio channels in the airport utility config - but that didn't work either.
    Any suggestions?
I am on OS X 10.6.7 and CISCO VPN CLIENT 4.9.0.1.0180
    URGENT HELP NEEDED

airport is off how can i turn it on?
Click on the AirPort icon in the OS X menu bar. Select "Turn Wi-Fi On" or "Turn AirPort On" as appropriate.
how can i reinstall mac os x 10.6.7?
I would suggest that you start with the Snow Leopard installation disk. You can then update to 10.6.7 from Software Update.

  • Wireless connection drops every day -- iTunes 8.02 the problem??

Hello! Our iMac is connected to the internet via Airport, and we have rarely had problems with the connection. For the last two weeks, when I get on the iMac for the first time that day, I have to reconnect to the wireless network through the Airport Setup Assistant every single time. I've tried resetting our cable modem and Airport -- no effect on the problem. I've tried going into sleep mode without logging off to see if that might help -- nope. I've tried repairing permissions in the off-chance that that might help -- no again.
In something that seems more than just a coincidence, we updated our iTunes to 8.02 about two weeks ago, and that's when this problem began happening. I am especially suspicious that there's a link because we did not update iTunes on our Macbook and it has no problem whatsoever staying connected to the exact same wireless network.
    Two questions, then:
-- Is the iTunes 8.02 update the problem?
-- If so, how do I go back to iTunes 7.7?
    Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to iTunes and apple, but this is happening to me too! I've got iTunes 8 and whenever I run it, my wireless connection drops (disables itself) and cannot be restarted without rebooting the machine. Did you manage to find an answer?

  • Wireless connection drops - T500

I just purchased a T500 couple days back. My wireless card turns off automatically like after a couple of hours or so. It wont work again without a restart. I uninstalled and reinstalled Access Connection, but it still did not help. I am running Windows Vista. I also tried disabling the "switch off wireless card to save power" in the wireless card properties. That did not work either. I have a Intel Wifi Link 5300 card. When the connection drops, i try to search, and i cannot find any other wireless connection in the area. Any help would be really appreciated as it is annoying when the internet goes off every now and then, and you have to restart. I have other laptops connected to the network as well, and they don have any issues connecting to the wireless network.

    Hi,
I am running XP Pro, 2002 edition with SP3 on an X200, 4Gb ram, 160gb HD, , with Intel WiFi Link 5300, and I have the same issue as described above. The connection will drop after approx 2 hours. Any program running on the computer will continue working okay, but the wireless connection stops responding.
Trying to right click on the taskbar wireless connection icon doesnt show the usual dialog.
The 'networks' folder on control panel opens okay, but trying to disable the wireless adaptor from there, does not return a positive answer, the system just doesnt return anything. While this happens, once again, every other function in the computer works correctly. After rebooting the computer, the wireless adaptor is not enabled.
I also noticed that the issue propagates to the wired network connection. Once the wireless adaptor stops working, the wired adaptor does not provide connectivity either. This might signal the Lenovo 'Access Connection' software might be to blame.
I tried to prevent Access Connections to manage the connections, without actually uninstalling, and the freeze continues.
I will install the newer driver from intel's website, to see if it helps.
