SSID set on specific access points

Hi All,
I have an installation of 1 wireless controller at a head office and some access points distributed to two locations. One of these locations has requested a guest wireless access. Please advise if i can setup the guest wireless ssid to only be projected from the aps in one location?
I would not like to have both locations see the SSID.
Thanks

Yes you can. You just need to use AP Groups which allows you to specify what SSID and interface you want that ap to use. Then if you want to drop off the traffic locally you can setup the APs in FlexConnect mode.

  • Setting the Maps Access Point

I just found something quite weird when using Maps on my N82.
If I set the default access point to a configured WLAN and I set 'Go Online at Startup' to no, or if the WLAN is not available, then when I go and select 'Tools/Go Online' it automatically changes the default access point to the mobile providers on air internet access point.
So since I have downloaded all the maps for my area I was planning to leave the internet access off mostly, but should I come to turn it on, it will completely ignore the WLAN default setting and go straight to the mobile network therefore costing me money, and not only, it will change the default to this and leave it like that for next time.
Is there anyway to prevent this behaviour?
And ideally in general, is there any way to congure a set of access points to try in order e.g. try my home WLAN first, my work WLAN second and then the mobile network third? As far as I am concerned once it has asked me if it can go online I don't want to have to select the access point each time, I would rather it attempts a WLAN if possible and then if not goes mobile all without asking me.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

I'm kinda in the same situtation, anyway I think it just follows the access points priority on the phone. I was able to use wi-fi in the offline mode (of the mobile)!

  • SSID only from few Access points

    Hi all
I am going to create a new WLAN id/SSID in wireless controller which is Cisco 4402 and once i create it the ssid is going to be pushed to all the access points but i want to broadcast the SSID only to few access points, is there anyway can we do that either in the controller itself or from WCS. please let me know
    thanks

    Hello,
Yes, you can shape that traffic. Its call Cisco AP Groups. You can simply check the config guide for confi efforts. What code are you on, if you are on 4.2 you can do WLAN Overide.
    Hope this helps ...

  • Is there any way I can control which specific access point I connect (and stay connected) to from amongst a set of access points with the same SSID?

I'm working from a boat in a harbor in which the ISP has deployed numerous access points around the periphery.  All the access points share the same SSID and each is configured to use either channel 1, 6 or 11.   From my location, there are over a dozen of these access points "visible" (based on the the output of WiFi Scanner) with a range of RSSI and S/N values that vary over time.
The ISP has told me that the quality of my connection should be "perfectly fine" for any access point with an RSSI value better than -75, but I know from experience that my connection quality is miserable (i.e. < 50Kbps download) for almost all of these, including those with RSSI values better than -75.  There is at least one exception, however, which gives me on the order of 2Mbps download, which is "great" in this context.
I've tried using a more powerful USB antenna plugged into my MacBook Air (mid 2011), but as far as I can tell, it really doesn't make much difference.  Neither does my location within the boat.   The overriding factor seems to be which access point I happen to connect up to.
I should point out that the closest access points are about 75 yards away, with many of them being several hundred yards away or more.  I'm guessing that even though the signal strength of some of the distant access points is causing them to get "chosen" some times, the results are unacceptable due to the distance.
I'm hoping that I can determine, through experimentation, which access point(s) provide(s) acceptable performance and then configure my Mac to limit my connection to those points through whatever mechanism I need to use (e.g. channel, MAC id, etc.).

Establishing a wireless connection with a client computer is left to the access point for various reasons. One reason that your Mac may not connect to the strongest access point is that it may have reached a limit of the number of clients it can serve, leaving it unable to accept a connection with another. The limit may not be very large.
Suppose that happens, and your Mac establishes a connection with a more distant access point having a weaker signal. Then, suppose a client drops off the network. Doesn't this mean your Mac will switch to the stronger access point? Not necessarily. The throughput delivered to and from your Mac would have to drop below a threshold specified in the AP for it to drop the client, leaving your Mac free to connect with another one. The reason for this is to prevent rapid switching from one AP to another in an area in which two signals are of approximately equal quality. If that were to occur the frequent and repetitive handshaking between the two devices would slow throughput to zero.
In an environment in which several access points are broadcasting the same SSID, Apple provides no insight as to how it determines which access point to choose. This is the reason I suspect this "choice" is a function of the router, or access point. The connection originates with it, not the Mac.
Now, what would solve your dilemma would be to determine a way to control the access point with which your Mac connects, by specifying the access point's unique MAC address for example. In this happy circumstance, you could maintain an editable "whitelist" or "blacklist" of the harbor's access points and be able to choose which among them you prefer.
I do not believe OS X maintains such a record of MAC addresses though, only those of the routers it uses. If I am correct about that, such a solution is unlikely to exist. Don't let that discourage you from searching for one though... I would concentrate on something like "selecting access point by specific MAC address".
I did find this patent application though:
Roaming Network Stations Using A Mac Address Identifier To Select New Access Point
    Perhaps it's a start

  • Broadcast SSID only on defined Access Points?

I'm using a Cisco Wireless LAN Controller 5508, 14x Access Points 1041 and 6x Access Points 1031 in combination with a NCS 1.0.
Is it possible to broadcast SSID'S only on defined Access Points, e.g. AP 1-3,7-10,18? If yes, what have I to do?
    Kind regards
    Kai

Quick question, can you validate the below scenario please
    We have seven SSIDs
WLAN           Dynamc Interface that its mapped to
    WHSE10          VLAN10-10.0.10.0/24
    WHSE20          VLAN20-10.0.20.0/24
    WHSE30          VLAN30-10.0.30.0/24
    WHSE40          VLAN40-10.0.40.0/24
    Office50           VLAN50-10.0.50.0/23
    Office60           VLAN60-10.0.60.0/23
    Guest70           VLAN70-172.16.8.0/23
we have around 40 access points in the warehouse and 20 APs in the office, and we are broadcasting SSIDs everywhere, means office and guest SSID s exist on the WHSE APS and WHSE SSID s exist on office APs.
Does having more SSIDs on the APs affects its power (Signal strength) in anyway?
    APgroup1- WHSE-GROUP- (will add VLAN10,VLAN20,VLAN30,VLAN40 interfaces)
    APgroup2- WHSE-OFFICE- (Will add all VLANS-10,20,30,40,50,60 and 70)
APgroup3- OFFICE-GROUP-( Will add only office and Guest WLANs- VLAN50,60 and 70)
We won't need to broadcast any WHSE SSIDs in the office area so we will add the Office APS to ----  APgroup3- OFFICE-GROUP
The WHSE APS will need to advertise both office and WHSE SSID s but we don't need to broadcast Office SSIDs everywhere in the warehouse, so we assign some APs in WHSE to APgroup2- WHSE-OFFICE and some to APgroup1- WHSE-GROUP
How does the client roaming work in the above scenario when they move from APs in APgroup1 to APs in APgroup2 (I don't think this will be any different than normal client roaming from one AP to another AP but I want to make sure)
    Thanks for the help

  • WRT54GNX2 Router set up as Access Point

How can I configure the WRT54GNX2 as an access point and connect it to our network. I can't seem to get the magic settings.

Uh, ok. I figured it out. I feel stupid now.. LOL! Now to set it up so that it can only route to the Internet port on the Internet router, so that people can use the internet, and not get access to our network...

  • SSIDs and VLAN on access points

The commands to map an SSID to a VLAN on an IOS access point are basically like this:
    [snip]
    dot11 ssid MYSSID
    vlan 5
    interface Dot11Radio0
    ssid MYSSID
    interface Dot11Radio0.5
    encapsulation dot1q 5
    bridge-group 5
    interface FastEthernet0
    interface FastEthernet0.5
    encapsulation dot1q 5
    bridge-group 5
    [snip]
My question is this: what does the command "vlan 5" actually do? Does it map MYSSID to bridge-group 5, which is then mapped to 802.1q tag 5 by the subinterface configurations (so that the tag number is arbitrary), or does it map MYSSID to 802.1q tag 5 on the radio interface, which is then bridged to the appropriate dot1q subinterface on the wired side by the bridge group (so that the bridge group number is arbitrary)?

Vlan tag is tied to SSID and Bridge group is also tagged to appropriate vlan mentioned as bridge group number

  • Make airport connect to specific access point?

Hi. I am at a hotel at the moment. The WiFi here is rubbish. When I'm connected it works fine until I disconnect and come back. The problem is when I connect I get a self assigned IP address. I believe it is something to do with the fact that they have 2 access points and one is configured with DHCP wrong. Anyway one is on channel 11 and one is on channel 2 and I was wondering if there was a way to force airport to connect to the one that works.

there's many possibilities, you should provide more detailed information about your environment, for example: AP model/firmware version, laptop model/OS/wirless card driver, parameters configured in the AP and laptop.
    Typically there're some possible reasons:
    1. laptop wirless driver bug or compatibility issue with AP
    2. No matter what reasons, if your laptop had already associated to the outside AP(for example, inside AP powered up later; there's some time, the inside AP lost connection to laptop), if the outside AP's signal had not dropped to a very poor strength level(roaming threshold), your laptop will not roam to a better signal inside AP

  • Setting Airport to use a Specific Access Point

I am in Leopard connecting to a Pronto wireless provider her in Texas. My conections drops about every 20 seconds or so, making it a real pain. After doing some reading and using iStumbler and IPnetmonitor, I found that there where 3 AP in my area with almost the same signal strength. So I moved to the edge of town and was able to have only 1 AP in range and was able to connect with no more dropouts.
The WDS (Wireless Distribution System) in use seems to be what produces the dropouts in leopard, As leopard rescans the waves and finds another AP with the same name and transmitting channel it gets confused on to which one to join making it drop the connections.
So my question is, is there a way to tell leopard to stop all scanning and join AP with xx.xx.xx.xx MAC Address?
As a side note, My wife has her PB with 10.4.11 and does not have this problems in exactly the same enviorment.

    @ Peter Lawrey
I was thinking of changing the locale of what the JVM were using by some flag or something since the process might be affecting the weblogic server (to rule things out). AFAICT Ive configured WL to use some other stamp but since I still get, at startup, the "old" timestamp and then it gets changed to stamp format as I defined either with a -D flag or in the config. The docs says the format is set by the locale from the environment, but changing locale doesn't affect it. I do agree that the question might be better i asked in a Wl forum so I did.
    @ EJP
That option is not an option in this case.
Any moderator is free to delete this topic since I asked this in the WL forum instead.

  • Force connection to a specific access point

My apologies if this is too "wordy". My network consists of an Airport Extreme Dual Band as the main router and two Airport Express n's extending the 5Ghz network separately named basically for Directv Multi Room Viewing. The only n client that I have at the moment is an Apple TV and the majority of the time it is connecting to the 5Ghz network via the Airport Extreme. The wireless rates of the devices on the 5Ghz network range from 108 to 216. However, on occasion when I stream a video from a computer on the network, the video becomes unwatchable. I bring up the Airport Utility to the check wireless rates and the Apple TV is no longer connected to the Airport Extreme, but to one of the Airport Expresses and the rate has fallen to 12. Is there a method/procedure/setting to "force" the Apple TV to only connect to the Airport Extreme and never connect to one of the Airport Expresses? Many thanks.

I've had more success not creating a separate name for the 5ghz so the client can determine which one is better.
Interestingly, I have been messing wtih MRV from DirecTV using an extreme base also, and I find that 2.4ghz N works a lot better than the 5ghz N, even though the "rates" in airport utility are higher. The signal strength on my DTV bridge is higher with the 2.4ghz. YMMV, and I wonder if its related the the complaints of performance on the 5ghz band of these bases.

  • Similar SSID for two 1252 access points

Hi, we currently have one 1252 AP. It has two Vlans. One for data and one for voice. Just bought another 1252 AP and going to have similar setup.
I read I can have similar SSID so that uses don't need to re-authenticate to the other AP. If this is true, can I just copy the config.txt file to the other AP, except of course I'll change the static IP addr of the AP. Pls advise, thks.

    Hi sohocisco,
Keeping the same SSID/VLAN will ensure that L2 roaming is possible, which is what you want. Depending on your authentication methods, though, you may need to configure WDS in order to ensure for seamless roaming as you describe.
Note that this is only if you're using and EAP or WPA (non-PSK) authentication method. Please see this document for configuration assistance:

    I hope that helps!

  • 6120c - default access point and setting applicati...

Does anyone know how to set the default access point on the 6120, for all apps? And how to allow apps to access the internet without asking? The default browser is ok but everything else (Opera Mini, Gmail, Google Maps etc) asks for permission, then an access point. I figured it out on my N73 but can't get it on the 6120.

Thanks for the reply. I've looked in App Manager but the only context-sensitive stuff for each app is 'details' which is just the vendor and certificate, and 'settings' which is 'Software Installation', Online Certificate Check' and 'Default Web Address'.
Doh! Just got it - choosing 'open' doesn't start the app, it gives me the options I need. Problem solved!

  • Setting email access point

I'm trying to set my internet access point for emails to automatic. But it only gives me an option to pick one. I want it to connect to my few preffered access points only so how do I fix this.
    Appreciate your help

    I found the solution...I think.
If you set it on default connection then it should just connect to the network your on, or the next priority.

  • Wireless Roaming with more than one access point

    Dear All,
I am trying to set up roaming access points around my home. My main router is the Hub 3 and what I am doing is setting the SSID and channel i want on the hub 3 then setting the same SSID on the additional access point (WNR1000v3) and disabling DHCP on the additional access point and setting a static IP and a different channel to the one  on the hub 3.
The problem I am getting is that my devices (android smartphone and tablet) will either only connect to one of the access points when I am near it and then when I go to the area that the hub 3 is in it drops the connection.
I want to know why this is happening because at another house where I work I have additional access points broadcasting the same SSID as the home hub 2! which works.
Please could someone tell me why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it.
    Many Thanks,
    Dominic

    Thanks for the reply Keith,
But why does it not allow for Roaming?
There is an internal Ethernet switch which routes the Ethernet frames to a specific device MAC address, via the wireless module, or the LAN ports, but not both.
Once a device MAC address appears on the LAN side, all frames are routed to that interface, until the physical interface is disconnected.
That prevents the same MAC address connecting to the wireless interface.
Universal wireless repeaters do not have that problem, as all connections take place on the wireless interface.
