SSL session cache memory consumption
Hello,
I am implementing a high availability application that uses SSL session caching. How much memory does it consume? I mean, is setting session cache size to unlimited a 'safe' option?
Thanks.
Not for a server, limit it to something. It's in the server's interest to keep sessions few and short-lived, but conversely it's in the client's interest to keep sessions many and long-lived.
A 'session' object contains the master secret and the current session key, and references to the peer certificate chain.

Hello,
I've been scratching my head for while on a problem concerning SSL session caching. Upon examining memory usage of the session cache I noticed that the number of cached sessions is reset at some point while new session are created. For example sometimes at around 300 -1500 sessions the number drops to under 10. I have set the session cache size to unlimited (via SSLSessionContext.setSessionCacheSize()) and session timeout to 24 hours (via setSessionTimeout()).
I noticed that this has probably something to do with garbage collection. I made a server application that receives SSL connections and every few seconds prints the number sessions in the cache and the amount of consumed memory (in megs). I also enabled garbace collection information printing and ran java VM with a maximum heap size of 512M. I ran a client application against it that continuously initializes a new sessions. Here's what I got:

And in between there's a garbage collection print "[Full GC...". Why is this? Shouldn't the session cache keep the sessions until there's either too many of the them or they get too old? Here only a few minutes have elapsed and memory consumption is under control (1 to 3 megs). In my implementation I avoid session renegotiation as
much as possible to achieve high throughput. My goal
is to preserve sessions for the entire session
timeout time. This raises a few questions:Understood, but you also have to protect the server against resource exhaustion. It's in the client's interest to cache lots of sessions for a long time; the server's interest is to conserve resources so it can keep itself running.
You actually don't want to cache all the sessions, just the 'hot' ones, so you're better off having the SessionContext remove sessions on an LRU basis by having a finite limit, rather than just letting them be GC'd. The fact that so many sessions were collected in your runs indicates pretty severe memory usage.
(1) Is there any way to tweak this behavior? For
example can make the sessions live longer by using
some GC flags for the VM? Allocate more heap space, or cache fewer sessions.
(2) How about keeping regular references to all the
sessions in my application? That would save them from GC of course. But then you'll quickly discover that you really do need a finite limit.
(3) Is the behavior of the session cache or the inner
workings of the SSL API in general documented
somewhere?Only in the source code of JSSE, and that's only a property of Sun's JRE implementation. Session caching is not even a required feature, and J2ME implementations for example generally don't do it at all. -
Http.keepAlive does not turn off SSL session cache?
Hi there,
I have a web service client that uses JSSE for making web service calls via https. In an effort to debug problems, I set http.keepAlive to false, I can see from the SSL debug output that KeepAlive timer messages no longer shows up, but I still see text such as "Cached client session" and "try to reuse cached session", etc.
Should not turning off keepAlive disable the use of persistent sessions?
Thanks.
YanThey are unrelated features.
HTTP Keep Alive allows the browser to maintain a Socket to the server and issue multiple HTTP requests over that same socket.
SSL Session caching is when an SSL Session is assigned an ID, and additional SSL connects may be established with the same ID. These additional sockets then do not need to perform the full SSL handshake, since much of the data has already been negotiated previously. -
Server 2008 R2 - Metafile Cache Memory Consumption...
This question is related to posting
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservergen/thread/7b49424d-08c1-4fc4-bc9a-3569ab978efe, the final comment in the thread reading:
"I ended up opening a ticket with Microsoft. It was indeed the exact same problem as people were having with Server 2008, which Microsoft was kind enough to provide a publicly available fix, but, for unknown reasons, have not provided for Server 2008
R2. They provided me with the DynCache fix, which allowed me to set a limit on how much memory was used.
Problem solved!
They even ended up charging me $100 for the fix, despite the fact that if the issue is Microsoft's, there is supposed to be no charge. I was going to dispute it but it got lost in the shuffle.
So, open a ticket with MS and they should provide you with DynCache, just don't let them charge you for it. Releasing a product then charging extra to make it work correctly is called a racket in my business...
Hope that helps"
I'm having the exact same issue with one of our production servers. I done the troubleshooting and I know that this is the problem. The simple question is, can I obtain dyncache for 2008 R2 without going to the trouble of opening a ticket, handing over my
credit card information and then arguing about whatever it is that they want to charge me.
Thanks in advance!
Lou Laczo, IT Manager, Conterra LLCWord up folks.
I have had success using SetSystemFileCacheSize to tame 2008 R2 memory management.
-Copy SetSystemFileCacheSize.exe & EmptyStandbyList.exe to C:\Windows\System32\
-Create simple batch file to execute SetSystemFileCacheSize.exe flush & EmptyStandbyList.exe
-Create a Task to run the batch file as often as needed.
For our environment, running this Task once a day after our nightly backup routines is sufficient.
Hell, I suppose I could add these lines to the end of my backup scripts. Hmmm... Will have to test this. -
ITS 620 Template Cache - unlimited memory consumption
Hi,
We have patched standalone ITS 620 to 23 to resolve some issues we have with
the display of ITS screens via the Mozilla browser. However, we are now encountering memory issues where the Agate process is consuming much more than is allocated via the threads and sessions values.
With patch 23 we can now see the template cache value and it consumes all the free physical memory on the machine. The 'Cachesize' parameter is set to a much lower value than this:
Can anyone tell me:
1. Is this behaviour correct for this cache?
2. How do we disable the cache?
3. How do we restrict the size of the cache?
Thanks.
/regards,
Conor.Hi Conor,
ITS development is not aware of memory issues with PL 23.
The memory the template cache allocates does not depend on the "Cachesize" parameter. This parameter is for RFC connections of flowlogic services.
If after PL 23 you have Mozilla user you haven't before this would explain the increase of the template cache memory consumption. For each browser and language the amount of memory in the templates cache increases.
You surely could disable the templates cache but this would hit performance (switch parameter StaticTemplates to 0 in ITS Admin - <Your_Instance> Configuration - Performance). On each template access the template would have to be parsed again. This switch is intended for a development environment only.
The best you can do is to setup ITS server on 64-Bit OS and 64-Bit ITS 6.20 executables. On 64-Bit you can forget about memory issues due 32-Bit address space limitations.
If you this is not possible you have to reduce the memory by
- forwarding requests with specific languages to specific ITS instances
- forwarding request from Browsers like Mozilla to a specific ITS instances
- checking peak values in ITS Admin Overview and tune parameters MaxSessions, MaxWorkthreads accordingly. Be carefull!!
SAP note 720428 gives you advise about the most important ITS 6.20 parameters.
Best regards,
Klaus -
WLS 6.1 (Solaris 8)

We are using an EJB to create an HTTPSConnection (SSL connection) to a
third party to retrieve data displayed in a JSP. We are using the
Weblogic SSL implementation.
I turned on the "-DSSL.debug" info and it looks like a new SSL session
is being created for each request to our third part (it goes through
the whole handshake every time).
Is there any way to have the SSL session resumed using the Weblogic
SSL implementation? During development, I was able to get the JSSE
implementation to resume session by keeping the same URL object
around...so I figured Weblogic would work the same way.
If anyone knows how the Weblogic SSL session manager works, I'd love
to hear about it. I read that SSL sessions were supposed to be fixed
back in 5.1SP10, but that sounded like it was for Weblogic clients so
maybe Weblogic "as the client" is different?
Thanks,
ChrisHi, Chris --
The fixes to SSL session caching appear in WLS 6.1 SP11 and WLS 6.1 SP3.
A WebLogic SSL client would normally retain its current session ID;
however, this SSL session state information is associated only with the
"current thread" - which might explain in part why new SSL sessions
are being negotiated on subsequent calls to the EJB.

P.S. You may want to consider opening a case with WebLogic Support to
explore this question further.

CSS11503/ACE 4710 - SSL session id cache
I have a couple of questions.
1. I'd like to know what happens when the SSL session id cache (def 10k) gets filled on a CSS11503. Do new connections get dropped or do they still work but are they less efficient?
2. What is the cache size on an ACE4710?The problem was caused by an incorrect nat pool. Correct Mask was 255.255.255.0.

Portal Session Memory Consumption
Dear All,
I want to see the user sessions memory consumption for portal 7.0. i.e. if a Portal user opens a session, how much memory is consumed by him/her. How can i check this. Any default value that is associated with this?
Backend System memory load will get added to portal consumption or to that specific Backend System memory consumption.
Thanks in Advance......
VinayakI'm seeing the exact same thing with our setup (it essentially the same
as yours). The WLS5.1 documentation indicates that java objects that
aren't serializeable aren't supported with in-memory replication. My
testing has indicated that the <web_context>._SERVLET_AUTHENTICATION_
session value (which is of class type
weblogic.servlet.security.ServletAuthentication) is not being
replicated. From what I can tell in the WLS5.1 API Javadocs, this class
is a subclass of java.lang.object (doesn't mention serializeable) as of
SP9.
When <web_context>._SERVLET_AUTHENTICATION_ doesn't come up in the
SECONDARY cluster instance, the <web_context>.SERVICEMANAGER.LOGGED.IN
gets set to false.
I'm wondering if WLCS3.2 can only use file or JDBC for failover.
Either way, if you learn anything more about this, will you keep me
informed? I'd really appreciate it.
>
Hi,
We have clustered two instances of WLCS in our development environment with
properties file configured for "in memory replication" of session data. Both the
instances come up properly and join the cluster properly. But, the problem is
with the in memory replication. It looks like the session data of the portal is
getting replicated.
We tried with the simplesession.jsp in this cluster and its session data is properly
replicated.
So, the problem seems to be with the session data put by Portal
(and that is the reason why I am posting it here). Everytime the "logged in "
check fails with the removal of one of the instances, serving the request. Is
there known bug/patch for the session data serialization of WLCS? We are using
3.2 with Apache as the proxy.
Your help is very much appreciated.--

Is the caching of SSL Session IDs implemented in JSSE? Is the option enabled by default? Thanks.

Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues
Hi all
I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
The error messages are :
"Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.
Cheers
Neil Hughes

Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

Maintaining data of view objects in cache memory for repeated usage
Hi,
We are developing an application which is having around 800 viewobjects that will be used as LOV in different screens. Therefore, it is decided to create a separate project for all such LOV view objects and keep the same in shared scope so that the data can be made availabe across the application.
The application also communicates with different database schemas based on the logged-in county. For a particular user, LOV view object LovView1 should get the data fetched from Schema1 whereas for user2, the same LovView1 should get the data from Schema2.
For this, we have created n number of ApplicationModules like AM1, AM2 etc in the project each one being connected to different database. A base application module also has been created and all the county specific AMs extend this base AM. Also all the LOV view object instances are included in this base AM so that they will be available in the county specific AMs also. The entire project is made as an ADF Library jar and this base AM is utilized by other projects for mapping the LOV by attaching the library.
At runtime, whenever a particular viewobject is accessed, the findViewObject() method of the baseAM has been overridden and the logic is built in such a way to get the logged in user's county code from a session variable and based on the county, the corresponding AM is communicated with and the view object is returned.
The view objects of the LOV project is used as LOV as well as for doing some other backend processes. In such cases, the view object is obtained and necessary filter conditions are appended to the view criteria and is executed to get the filtered rowset.
Now, my questions are,
1. Is it enough to create the jar for the LOVProject and access the view objects from the same baseAM across the application?
2. I wish to keep all the data in cache memory to avoid repeated DB hits for all the LOV view objects. How it can be achieved? To be more precise, consider two users user1 and user2 logging into the application with different county. When user1 access a LOV viewobject for the first time, data needs to be fetched from the DB, kept in application scoped cache memory and return the rowset. On subsequent calls to the viewobject, the data needs to be retreived from the cache and not from the DB. When user2 also access the same LOV viewobject, the same logic as explained for user1 should happen. How can I achieve this? Actually my doubt is when user2 access, will the data pertaining to user1 remains available in cache? If not, how to make it retain the data in cache?
3. I also wish to append a particular where condition to a viewobject irrespective of other considerations like logged in county, existing view criteria etc.. How can I do this? A separate thread for this requirement has been posted in the forum Including additional where clause conditions to view criteria dynamically
Kindly give me your suggessions.
Thanks in advance.
Regards.Hi Vijay,
regarding your questions:
1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
"In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
==> Product has just been renamed and integrated better with the Oracle database - Times-Ten == In-Memory-Cache-Database
2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
cache feature)?
==> Seperate Installation
3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
==> Please have a look here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/quickstart/cc_qs_index.html
This explains the differences.
4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
in making this statement?
==> Please see above mentioned papers
5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
Database Cache"?
==> Again ... ;-)
Kind regards

Integration Builder Memory Consumption
Hello,
we are experiencing very high memory consumption of the Java IR designer (not the directory). Especially for loading normal graphical idoc to EDI mappings, but also for normal idoc to idoc mappings. examples (RAM on client side):
- open normal idoc to idoc mapping: + 40 MB
- idoc to edi orders d93a: + 70 MB
- a second idoc to edi orders d93a: + 70 MB
- Execute those mappings: no additional consumption
- third edi to edi orders d93a: + 100 MB
(alle mappings in same namespace)
After three more mappings RAM on client side goes on 580 MB and then Java heap error. Sometimes also OutOfMemory, then you have to terminate the application.
Obviously the mapping editor is not quite will optimized for RAM usage. It seems to not cache the in/out message structures. Or it loads for every mapping very much dedicated functionality.
So we cannot really call that fun. Working is very slow.
Do you have similar experiences ? Are there workarounds ? I know the JNLP mem setting parameters, but the problem is the high load of each mapping, not only the overall maximum memory.
And we are using only graphical mappings, no XSLT !
We are on XI 3.0 SP 21

High memory consumption in XSL transformations (XSLT)
Hello colleagues!
We have the problem of a very high memory consumption when transforming XML
files with CALL TRANSFORMATION.
Code example:
CALL TRANSFORMATION /ipro/wml_translate_cls_ilfo
SOURCE XML lx_clause_text
RESULT XML lx_temp.
lx_clause_text is a WordML xstring (i.e. it is a Microsoft Word file in XML
format) and can therefore not be easily splitted into several parts.
Unfortunately this string can get very huge (e.g. 50MB). The problem is that
it seems that CALL TRANSFORMATION allocates memory for the source and result
xstrings but doesn't free them after the transformation.
So in this example this would mean that the transformation allocates ~100MB
memory (50MB for source, ~50MB for result) and doesn't free it. Multiply
this with a couple of transformations and a good amount of users and you see
we get in trouble.
I found this note regarding the problem: 1081257
But we couldn't figure out how this problem could be solved in our case. The
note proposes to "use several short-running programs". What is meant with
this? By the way, our application is done with Web Dynpro for ABAP.
Thank you very much!
With best regards,
Mario DüsselHi,
q1. how come the Ram consumption is increased to 99% on all the three boxes? If we continue with the theory that network connectivity was lost between the hosts, the Coherence servers on the local hosts would form their own clusters. Prior to the "split", each cache server would hold 1/12 of the primary and 1/12 of the backup (assuming you have one backup). Since Coherence avoids selecting a backup on the same host as the primary when possible, the 4 servers on each host would hold 2/3 of the cache. After the spit, each server would hold 1/6 of the primary and 1/6 of the backup, i.e., twice the memory it previously consumed for the cache. It is also possible that a substantial portion of the missing 1/3 of the cache may be restored from the near caches, in which case, each server would then hold 1/4 of the primary and 1/4 of the backup, i.e., thrice the memory it previously consumed for the cache.
q2: where is the cache data stored in the coherence servers?on which memory? The cache data is typically stored in the jvm's heap memory area.
Have you reviewed the logs?

HTTPS persistence SSL session, ACN 4.2.1
Customer is experiencing a problem resulting in the ACN software resolving the host.domain.com twice. Webapplication https://host.domain.com/webapp/index.jsp. The customer uses a ACN to proxy the https request. The host.domain gets resolve to 1 of 4 available application servers (webserver). At the application login page (index.jsp) the user is successfully authenticated by the application's Login servlet on webserver 1. The user is then redirected to the select application, local to the webserver 1. It appears that when the ACN receives the response from webserver 1 with the fully qualitfying URL. The redirection cause the ACN to resolve the host.domain against DNS and as a result, the user's browser is redirected to a different webserver. The users previous session is no longer valid, breaking the client/webserver trusted relationship
If the above user uses 1 of the 4 available IP address on the DNS entry, the users successfully maintains the SSL session. The customer is migrating to a Cisco Content Engine 560 running version 4.2.1 ACN software.
I understand there are ACN features that could effect the HTTP session persistence/SSL trust. The services/features include boomerang, Reverse Proxy, content balancing. I request information on the service or feature of the ACN that could cause the problem I speak of from above.
I understand there are different methods of implementing session persistence, like sticky session and SSL sticky, but believe the ACN does provide this feature. The customer is experiencing network issues when attempting to access our application. The customer is experiencing has been seen with a previous customers that had a similar network devices.
The customer uses a Cisco Content Engine CE-560 with Application and Content Networking Software (ACNS) version 4.2.1. The problem seems to a result of the ACNS resolving the hostname.domain.com twice. The webserver's DNS (hostname.domain.com) entry resolves to one of four available webservers (DNS round robining).
nslookup hostname.domain.com
webserver1 webserver2 webserver3 webserver4
nslookup hostname.domain.com
webserver2 webserver3 webserver4 webserver1
and so on.
All client/webserver communication is through SSL. When the customer uses the FQDN URL (https://hostname.domain.com/webapp/index.jsp) to access the application login page, the server portion of the URL is resolved to webserver1. At this time, the customer has an established HTTPS session with webserver1. Once a login servlet running on webserver1, receives the customer supplied login credentials, the servlet sends a server response 302 redirecting the customer to the selected application.
This redirection response seems to cause the ACNS to resolve the hostname.domain.com and as a result, the customer's browser is redirected to a different webserver, webserver2. The users previous session is no longer valid, causing the application to generate a false inactivity timeout.
If the customer sends a HTTPS request using anyone of the four IP address from DNS, the session is maintained and the customer does not receive the false inactivity timeout, because the session is not "broken".
The customer is migrating off of a Netscape (iPlanet) Web Proxy solution and does not experience the problem accessing the application, using the FQDN URL.
DNS caching is enabled on the customer CE. -
Possible session caching issue in SSRS2014
Using custom FormsAuth, User A can sign into our own main asp.net mvc app (WIF cookie), then SSRS (FormsAuth cookie) and all is well. Here is where things go bad. User A signs out of our main application (WIF cookie deleted) then back in into
our main application as User B then back into SSRS. SSRS report that displays User!UserID show UserA instead of current User B. Its like there is either a session or cookie caching issue going on but not for sure.
1. What is the proper way to sign out of SSRS and prevent session caching?
2. Do I need to worry about making my SSRS logon page non-cacheable? If so, what is the recommended way of doing this?
thanks
scottHi scott_m,
According to your description, you used custom FormsAuthentication in Reporting Services, after user A sign out the application an sign in as user B, SSRS built-in user is shows user A instead of user B.
Based on my search, once we configured SSRS to use Custom (Forms) authentication by deploying a custom security extension, we can logon to MS Report Manager (MSRM) using credentials of our custom security framework via a logon web page. But there is no way
to logout or to expire the authentication cookie, so we need to close the browser manually. As a workaround, we can add a logout button to the Report Manager which is using Forms Authentication, then use code to clear the cookie and redirect to home page.
In addition, if you extend Reporting Services to use Forms Authentication, it’s better to use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for all communications with the report server to prevent malicious users from gaining access to another user's cookie. SSL enables clients
and a report server to authenticate each other and to ensure that no other computers can read the contents of communications between the two computers. All data sent from a client through an SSL connection is encrypted so that malicious users cannot intercept
passwords or data sent to a report server.
