SSSLLLLOOOOWWWWW slow to boot up!!!

Just got a Q10 one month ago, replacing a Curve.  OMG I really hate this Q10!!!!!!
I will start with issue #1:  WHY oh why does it take SO LONG to turn it on????  With the Curve I could press the on button and in less than 30 seconds it was useable.  This thing, you press the on button and it takes at least 3 minutes, showing the purple bb logo on a black screen, on and on and on, before it finally comes on.
Related issue:  the alarm clock does not work unless I leave the thing on.  With the Curve, you set an alarm, you press the off button, it warned you that it had an alarm and would come back on by itself in time for the alarm.  This thing, no such option.  Well obviously no wonder, because if you wanted it to come on for 5:00 it would have to start cycling at maybe 4:50 in order to trigger the alarm; but that is so annoying.  Using it as an alarm clock was very important to me.  If I have to leave it on all night that will eat the tiny teeny battery capacity right up!  (Yes, issue #3 is that the battery lasts about 1/4 the usage that it did on the Curve).
I'll leave it at that for now but is there something wrong with my Q10 or are they all slugs when booting up now??

That has changed depending on the device OS you are running. Of course, you've not said what level you are on, so it's impossible to guess if that may or may not be causal. Refer:
Article ID: KB23393 How to check the model number and version of the operating system on a BlackBerry smartphone
Note carefully please that OS level is what is important, not Software Release.
If you are on an older version, you might want to consider trying a newer version via LINK, Sachesi, or AutoLoader:

Also, please carefully consider the state you may have put your Curve into...was it truly shut off? Or perhaps just in a "sleep" mode? Regardless, a Curve <> a Q10. BB10 is completely different from legacy, and comparing the two is usually a way to find disappointment.

I think that may answer my earlier question...what you did with your Curve was truly not to turn it "off", but to put it into a "sleep" mode. Truly turned off, there would be no function...and hence no ability to know the time and activate the alarm. Hence, I deduce that you didn't truly turn your Curve "off", and that is the root of your comparison issues, for you are turning the Q10 off, which results in the problems you are experiencing.

Also addressed in various OS levels, and still not wise to try and compare. The use of a charger at night, every night, is not unusual at all (and, if you are a high demand user, even more frequently).

I don't think there is anything "wrong" with your Q10. Rather, I suspect you are comparing a power off state of the Q10 to a "sleep" state of your Curve...which are not at all the same thing. I recommend you try out newer OS levels to determine if perhaps at least some of your annoyances have been addressed already in updates.
Good luck and let us know!

I have a Presario SR5450F.  Recently, it is very slow to boot up.  It hangs up on the Compaq screen (Setup, Boot Menu, System Recovery, Diagnostics).  It hangs up on that screen for at least 10 minutes, which is unacceptable.  It just started doing this.  Can someone please help me?  Thanks.

Glad I could help. Thanks for sharing your problem and what device was causing it for you. Sometimes having too many USB devices can cause problems. Your camera might work if only the mouse and keyboard are connected. It is worth a try if you need to get photos from it. I have seen even on my custom built PC occasional "odd" issues that can arise from having a variety of different USB devices connected.
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" to those that help solve your problems.

  • IMac - slow to boot, bluetooth not found.

    System:
    iMac 24" (Early 2009) 2.66GHz
8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory (upgraded from original 4GB with 3rd party memory about 4 years ago)
Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB Disk (upgraded from original 640GB about 2 years ago)
    NVIDIA GeForge 9400
    OS X: 10.10.1
The issue began about 3 months ago when my mother-in-law had the machine. According to her, the machine became very slow to boot (taking from 20min to over 1 hour) and her wireless mouse was not working. Fortunately she was already using a wired keyboard and had a spare wired mouse, so she was able to use the machine. Other than the slow boot and mouse issue, the system was stable.  We decided to replace her machine in any case, primarily because it's not easily serviceable - especially where she lives (rural Alabama). I took the machine back (it had been mine originally). At that point it was running 10.8.5.
    I observed the following:
    1) The system was, indeed, very slow to boot as she described.
    2) None of the bluetooth devices were working.
    3) The bluetooth device shows as "No information found" in the System Information report
    4) Bluetooth preferences were not visible in system preferences.
    5) Coincident with her first report or problems, the following messages began appearing in the system logs:
    Dec 30 14:25:05 localhost kernel[0]: USBF:    3.195    AppleUSBHubPort::FatalError - Port 3 of Hub at 0x6100000 reported error 0xe00002c0 while doing clearing port feature (1)
    Dec 30 14:25:05 localhost kernel[0]: USBF:    3.195    AppleUSBHubPort::FatalError - Port 1 of Hub at 0x6100000 reported error 0xe00002c0 while doing clearing port feature (1)
    Dec 30 14:25:05 localhost kernel[0]: USBF:    3.206    AppleUSBHubPort::FatalError - Port 2 of Hub at 0x6100000 reported error 0xe00002ed while doing getting port status (4)
    Dec 30 14:25:05 localhost kernel[0]: USBF:    3.206    AppleUSBHubPort::FatalError - Port 2 of Hub at 0x6100000 reported error 0xe00002c0 while doing clearing port feature (2)
Though she originally had external peripherals attached, all have been removed - the only things plugged into any USB or Firewire port are the keyboard and mouse.
So, that's how the machine was when I got it back... I have tried the following:
    1) First I tried AHT - booting from the original disks provided with the system (AHT version 3A170). AHT hung while probing system hardware; it just stalled for several hours (I think I let it try overnight, only to return to see no progress). I've tried AHT a couple of times through this ordeal and can never get to the point where I can even initiate the test.
    2) I tried removing the bluetooth preferences file.
    3) I tried resetting NVRAM
    4) I tried resetting SMC
    5) I've booted in verbose mode, but nothing really stood out as clearly (or even vaguely) indicating a problem.
People did suggest booting in "safe" mode - thought it was never clear what I was supposed to do after that. In any case, an attempt to boot in safe mode caused the machine to just reboot itself. I even set safe mode in the boot-args and sat back and watched as the machine consistently rebooted itself each time... about 7 or 8 times before I got sick of hearing the boot chime. I did have verbose mode turned on in boot-args as well, an each time it rebooted at the same point, while initializing drivers. Interestingly, booting in "normal" mode has never been an issue - save for the exceptional amount of time it takes.
Since the data on the disk was of no use to me, I created a 10.10.1 install package on a USB stick and installed fresh - verifying and reformatting the hard drive before performing the install. The installation was uneventful (i.e. worked just like it should).
So, now I am running 10.10.1 and still no Bluetooth. I tried the AHT again and again it gets hung probing the hardware and I can't even initiate the test. I even tried a suggestion from another thread (hold ctl-shift-option and the power button for about 6 sec while the power is off)... that had worked for a number of folks but not for me.
One other piece of info I just confirmed while writing this, 0x6100000 is the Location ID associated with the BRCM2046 Hub - i.e. the Bluetooth device. Why this shows up as a hub on the USB Bus but the device itself doesn't appear to exist is confusing. I certainly would expect to see this as a USB hub on a correctly functioning system, it's just confusing why it's there when the underlying bluetooth device is not recognized.
So, I am pretty much convinced it's a hardware issue of some kind - given this is a "spare" Mac that I was simply trying to re-purpose to host a film scanner that requires a FireWire interface, I am not sure how much I want to invest financially in getting this resolved. I have heard that Apple no longer services these machines, but I could be wrong...  As I see it my options are kind of limited:
    1) Take it to a repair facility (even if Apple doesn't work on them, there are at least 2 places near by that do) and pay them $$ just to tell me that it's going to be $$$ fix it.
    2) Get my hands dirty, open this thing up and see if I can fix it.
I'm leaning towards option 2, but I am really reluctant to go on a fishing expedition. Based on what I have observed, it seems to be a problem with the bluetooth module itself, and as I understand it that is a separate part from the main logic board... which means that I can replace it for about $35 and the cost of the right tools; which all together total about the same amount as the "diagnostic" fee any local repair shop would charge. If it's not that, then it's the logic board and the best price I can find for that puts it in the "not worth the trouble" category anyway. I don't want to rule out some other component - memory, disk drive, or power supply... but any of those, at least to me, seem like the kind of components which would cause more erratic behavior when they fail.
So, what's my question - simple ... have I missed something here. Before I perform open heart surgery are there any last tricks I can try or is my conclusion that this must be a hardware problem pretty solid?

If your EHDs are formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and your using them as normal EHDs you don't need all of the WD software installed. The OS can use the disks without it.  Uninstall all of the WD software:

  • MBP slow to boot and WILL NOT boot from external drive

I have two problems. First my friends MacBook Pro which is less than a month old is taking long to load. So I did a clean install without installing anything other than what came. Still slow to boot. Sometimes I see a light blue screen for a while before getting into the desktop. She complains of the beachball far too often. She says my MacBook is faster than her Pro, which is not right.
So I came down with my external LaCie drive, which I cloned from my iMac 24". I wasn't able to boot from the external (firewire) drive using her MacBook Pro. I thought my LaCie drive was bad or soemthing, but when I got home, I hooked it up to my MacBook and booted from the external drive just fine. I use SuperDuper to make a bootable clone.
So as it stands now, her computer is slow to boot into the OS, and it won't let me boot from my external drive. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I did a clean install, used cocktail, etc. If it persists, I'll tell her to take it in.
    Thanks,
    Bryan

  • Very slow to boot, even on an external drive

A friend's 15" MacBook Pro, quad core i7,(older, not sure of the exact model) very slow to boot, and boots with the progress bar, then when you try to log in, it goes back to the login page. Often it will not start. Starts after resetting SMC.  Reset PRAM. Booted to the recovery disk, ran repair disk on drive, no errors, tried to run repair on the volume and the MBP shut down. Tried booting to an external drive and it boots to an empty desktop with a finder window like an extended desktop.Tried AHT, only the usual battery sensor error, 4SNS/1/40000000  TB3T-128.000. ran extended test, same thing, only the one error.
So, how to back up this MB Pro before I try an erase and install. (short of removing the drive) It would seem to be a hardware error, but always want to try an erase and install. Any ideas or troubleshooting suggestions?

Mike -- thanks for your input. I guess Windows is just a worrisome thing for us Mac guys. Part of what always gets me is unknown code that goes into Windows. I did a Google the other day to see if I could get a feel for the "roots" of the upcoming Vista.
Who knows what Vista is really based on -- a modification of NT that was in part based on DOS and VMS? From my limited experience, I am not sure there is enough shelf space to hold the manuals to run VMS successfully. Of course, why worry; Boot Camp and other things will change before Vista gets here.
The bottom line is that I will use all the Windows security fixes.

  • HT6114 MAC Air slow to boot after 10.9.2 update.

I have a 2011 MAC Air. After the 10.9.2 upgrade my laptop takes about 20 minutes to boot from power off. Once started it works fine, it is just extremely slow to boot. Prior to the update I could boot in about 10 seconds. Any thoughts how to resolve this issue?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • Suddenly my MacBook Air is very slow to boot up. I'm running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). Any tips? Thanks!

Suddenly my MacBook Air is very slow to boot up. It's about a year and a half old. I'm running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) -- and I'm far from being an expert at any of this stuff, have seen a few different answers and not sure what to do. Help! Grateful.

Okay, I am having a try at this. My machine wouldn't boot this morning again (like I said, it's erratic, so I then did a "safe boot" and restarted. This is what I think (I hope...) you want. Here's the first part, tho you'll see I am struggling with Part 2.

    In Part 2, you say:
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports.
BUT -- when I go into "System diagnostic reports" (and I have checked I'm clicking on the correct one) there's nothing in the log to the right, even when I click the arrow pointing down. Below that, on the left, it says FILES and then below that there's
    system.log
    kernel.log
and then /Library/logs (twice) and /var/logs
    What am I doing wrong?
    Grateful for help.

  • IMac suddenly slow after boot-up

    Hello!
I've had my iMac for about two years now (mid 2011 model), never formatted it, re-installed or anything.
Since about a month, all of a sudden, I've had issues with it, being pretty slow to boot. At first it takes about 30-40 seconds for it to actually boot, which isn't horrible but yet slower than it has been. Nothing strange of course. But then when it is actually booted up, everything runs real slow. Loading up Safari can take about 2-4 minutes depending on my mood (when I'm easily annoyed it usually takes longer time). Getting the mail to sync takes ages. And well, launching just about anything takes a fair amount of time longer than it has before. This eases away with the first 10-15 minutes of usage and goes back to normal by then.
Looking through the processes and stuff I'm usually running on about 90-98% unallocated processing power. About 9 GB free ram (out of 12 totally).
I'm running Mac on my job as well, where we use Mac Pros which are about 5 years old, we've never re-installed them or anything, they boot pretty slow, but they doesn't have this slow "directly after boot-up"-feeling as my iMac does.
To a friend using Windows, I'd suggest this as a non-hardware issue. Since Windows usually does that. But I've never had such sever problems on any mac.
I'm using Lion (10.7.5) and are planning to get Maverick when it's released, but I sort of want to resolve this first. If it doesn't mean I should actually re-install and start from scratch, which means I could wait for Mavericks before bothering.
    Suggestions?

Checked to see how much space is available ??
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. Less can slow your Mac down.
Checked the startup disk lately? You should do this before upgrading the system regardless.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
FYI:   OS X Recovery requires a high speed broadband connection.
Backup all your important files before repairing or restoring OS X just in case.

  • Mac Pro slow to boot up (out of the box)

My company bought 4 new Mac Pro units at the end of 2014. Of the three mine was the first to get powered up. It takes roughly 5 minutes to boot. In that time there is nothing on the screens. The other 3 boot up in 30-45 seconds. This has happened since the first boot with only the thunderbolt display hooked up. I've tested it with other displays with the same results. All 4 units are identical.
    What is going on here?
    Specs for each system...
    Processor: 3.5GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
    Memory: 32 GB RAM (using slot 1 & 2)
    Graphics: AMD FirePro D500
    OSX: 10.9.5
Boot drive: Apple SSD 210GB (120GB Available)
    Thunderbolt Display
    27" LG connected via HDMI-to-thunderbolt
27" LG connected via HDMI port on Mac Pro
    Thanks in advance!

You waited roughly 3 months to boot this machine for the very first time or for 3 months it's been booting this way?  Your comments suggest you just unpacked this baby and powered it up and it's slow.  If it's been running for 3 months, it's not out of the box.
This machine is still under warranty... why not have Apple Care take a look at it?  If as you say the setup between all 4 is identical but only this one is slow to boot, it's likely going to be a hardware issue, not a software one.
    Questions to ask yourself:
    1.  Is the hard drive nearly full?
    2.  Have you checked Disk Permissions and Verified the Disk?
    3.  If you have a dual boot configuration, is the OS X partition the default startup partition?
    4.  Have you reset the NVRAM/SMC yet?
How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
    5.  Have your cleared your kext caches?
In Terminal, copy/paste this one row at a time into the Terminal window and hit return:
    sudo chown root:admin /
    sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
    sudo kextcache -system-caches
    Quit Terminal and reboot.

  • Nomad Jukebox 3 extremely slow in boot-

My Nomad Jukebox 3 (20 GB) is extremely slow in booting up.
Since I had it connected to my laptop to clean up some of the Mp3's and making a new playlist, I'm having trouble getting the jukebox to start.
Booting time is now 8 minutes! The screen is locked up at the EAX splash screen all the time during booting. (booting up from standby mode is OK, but standby mode is gone after some 5 minutes)
    What I tried yet:
    a reset
    removing the batteries
    in the rescue mode:
    Disc clean up
Reload OS (Old firmware was .32, its now reloaded with firmware version .40.06p)
    and a reboot
    All to no avail.
    I have about 3000 songs on it (2 GB's).
The only thing I have not tried yet is a reformat, would that do the job?

It did it allright!Formatted the disc and it is booting OK again!(however I'm still very curious about the remaining lifetime of the disc)
I am now loading the Jukebox with my favourites and, until now, its behaving like new (after a minor hiccup).
    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Macbook slow to boot, slow to work - Spotlight Problem? (External HD)

    Hi everyone,
I have a Macbook from 2008 (The first aluminum model I believe, before they got rebranded as Pro). Recently I wanted to backup my pictures from iPhoto and I had an external HD formatted as exFAT. The moment I plugged my external HD in, my macbook started lagging real badly with the color wheel not going away. So I just held the power button until it restarted.
When it rebooted, it was first of all EXTREMELY slow to boot, and then once I logged in to my admin account, I could barely do anything. I tried my one other account on the computer and it was the same story. I noticed that Spotlight was not working, and when I clicked it ( and after 5 minutes it finally popped up), it said indexing, and it would never stop. I restarted a few times and it never stops indexing. From what I gather in Google searches, my macbook tried to index the hard drive when it was plugged in and somehow got stuck in this loop.
I read a few sites on how to disable spotlight completely, but the problem is that the computer is way too slow and unresponsive to do anything of the sort. Terminal can be opened but the commands won't execute. I tried holding shift to start the Mac in safe mode, but the bar moves half an inch and then I just get the little lines around the circle going forever with no bar progress.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.  I cannot afford to lose these photos, that is my number one concern. There are MANY documents that I need on the HD too, but the pictures are more important. Please give me some advice, while keeping in mind that my data is my primary concern, a reformat is out of the question.
    Thanks kindly,
    Z
PS: Not sure what Mac version I am, but I was updated to Snow Leopard and I always let the auto-updater do its thing. Don't even bother asking for activity monitor, way too laggy to open that (I tried, it opens but you can't click anything).

    Here's a terminal command: sudo mdutil -i on /
This works well =) This will help spotlight

  • Hp pavilion a6130n very slow to boot up or restart

hp a6130n is extremely slow to boot or restart after updates.  I tried to install sp37530 to reset bios as advised at other sites, but keep getting the "system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update.  Update has been cancelled 9996."  I checked the memory to see if that is the problem, disconnected the card reader etc.,  but am still having the same issues.  How do I get the bios update to run?  Am using vista home premium sp2.....HELP!!!!

    Alfred, welcome to the forum.
I suggest doing a System Recovery using the Recovery discs.  This will not only solve your problem, but will increase system performance.
For future reference, it is always good to install only one update at a time.  This way if there is a problem you can always delete it and start over.  It sounds like you may have a driver conflict.

The first thing I did was search the forums extensively and have came up empty..
The computer takes about 10-15 mins to boot and loading any application takes about 30-90 sec to open and each action in the application is as slow.
    From reading the forums......
I ran boot disk for diskwarrior. Everything was fine.
Ran in single user and ran that script to check the disk. Everything was fine.
Ran disk utility and did the usual. Everything is fine.
I check to make sure all the ram (768) was recoginzed....it is...
I have no idea what to do now. It appears that the hardware is ok. Any advice?
Also I checked activity monitor for any processes that were taking up cpu
    nothing...

This problem could be caused by not letting the daily, weekly, and monthly scripts run. To run these you can download mac janitor, or run them manually. T run manually open a terminal window and type sudo sh /etc/daily you will be asked for your password. The replace daily with weekly, and then monthly.
p.s. If you haven't run this in a while it can take a long time
