Stability Problems with P7N Diamond Continues

Big bummer. I've had this system since April, took a month to get it working as the first board I ordered was bad, this one seems to be a bum board. I've came here and a few other places, but help has been kind of hard to find.
Here's what I got:
MSI P7N Diamond
Intel QX9650
2x 2GB mushkin DDR2 1066 (XP2-8500) Timings: 5-5-5-15 2T
I have 4 HD's: all are seagate baracudas: 250, 500, 750, 1TB
MSI NX8600GT1GEZ
At this point overclocking is out of the question. All I want is a reliable PC that runs to its specifcations. RMA-ing this board is a last resort as often enough the RMA boards aren't worth a crap anyway, dont know if this is just the case with lower-end boards, but I hate having to wait, and I'm really ticked about the whole thing.
The computer reboots at random, I've found "more stable" configurations, but usually the machine will not stay running for more than 24 hours without a reboot. The most stable configurations are with the official 1.2 BIOS, setting the NB to 1.250 v, CPU Volt: Auto, SB: Auto, DRAM: 2.10, and I have manually set the memory timings: CL: 5, trcd: 5, trp: 5, tras: 15, and Command Rate: 2T. The FSB Speed: 1333, and the DRAM Speed: 1066. Temps are normal, and range from about 100 F at idle, and 120 F load on the CPU.
The voltage on the CPU is on the high side on Auto, the QX9650 can run on as little as .98 v at stock and this board is giving it 1.23 v on auto. The board also tries to set the timings on the memory to 7-7-7-24, which I feel has something to do with it.
I'm not an overclocker, I don't know what all these voltages do, I've only changed settings that have either been reccomended or have a warning setting (ie turn red).
I'll try a beta BIOS if one is available, but I was unaware that this board doesn't fully support the 45-nm CPU's.
There is NOTHING wrong with any of the hardware (except the board perhaps), I've tried other memory, PSU, even RMA the CPU, does the same thing. Everything has been tested, every possibility I can imagine, this problem has been haunting this system for months, and I'm almost to the point of buying a cheap as board that has some credibility that my hardware will work.
This is my most critical computer, I do everything on it, but I didn't buy a $300 motherboard to have these problems, or find that my CPU scores half of what it should when it is running stock, everything on this board is below stock, benchmarks are way below what they should be.
I'm up for some ideas, suggestions, if needed, I'll RMA the board, but it the return board does the same thing, I've lost all my faith in MSI. My last system had a P4M900M2 and it kicked butt, and it's a $50 board!  Go figure these boards are worse than imported cars.

By means of instability, can you describe the symptons of events that happen?
Can I have a list of the PSU models and RAMs models which you have tested?
Have you try the hardware on another board? If you have done so, what are the results?
I have not tried any of my hardware on this board, I have tried other memory on this board, this is the only board I have avialable to me that support LGA775 so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place on that. The memory I tired, couldn't tell you the exact model, but it was Apacer DDR2 800, and was listed under this board as tested memory, i do remember that much- if that helps any.
As far as overclocking, I was told that overclocking my rig would make it stable, which i feel in this case is a little more than bumping the FSB eitherway. But no this happens under "stock" settings. Orginally with the 1.0 BIOS the machine would sometimes give me a multitude of BSOD, CLOCK_INTERRUPT (A clock inttrupt was not recieved in a timely manner on a secondary processor), DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
Only way to get the machine to run "stable" is to severely underclock, with the FSB at 1137 and DRAM at 1034.
Other things. Benchmarks (SiSoft Sandra Lite 2007)
CPU: Drystone: 39000 MIPS / Whetstone: 28000 MFLOPS
Memory: 7 GB/sec (1066 with correct timings)
Both appear to be under par, CPU particularly, and in the event of tinkering, only see a jump in performance when adjusting the multiplier from 9 to 10.5, which isn't stable, stable enough to run a benchmark. So I'm not sure where the problem is.
This might help, the original thread from back in June.

  • Problems with P7N Diamond

Very Sorry if i upset you!
MSI P7N Diamond  Ver: 1.1 with Bios 1.3
2x1 Gb Corsair xms2 PC2 6400 tested and works on same board but not this one.
    2x500Gb Samsung F1
    Win XP Pro SP3
cannot update bios to 1.4 from 1.3
Tried USB method, CD, Floppy even safe mode command prompt.....disabled everything but the drives with bios files( usb,cd,floppy) but it still it finds the disabled Hardisk and boots into windows.
Memory will not work in Dual channel...sometimes it boots but nothing on screen.
Single channel boots most times but after trying USB or CD method it sometimes does not boot into windows.
Tried online too but only comes up with 1.3 bios
MSI support is none existent or impossible to get any sense out of them...after repeating my name and email address several times over the telephone i am still not sure if they understood.
I have filled in the online report system 3 times over the last two weeks but no reply and nothing active in box although it says report complete after submitting.
Have tried all the ways stated on updating bios.
I have updated many bios's on various boards, ASUS, ASrock, Aopen, Biostar etc no problems! Even modded bios on Asus boards.

Against my better judgment, I'm going to reply to this.  By your own admission, the motherboard was functioning fine in single channel mode.  Your issue only occurred under attempts to operate in dual channel mode.  Considering the real world benefits of dual channel memory are arguably negligible, one could remark it's such a minor technical detail, that nobody need b infatuated over it.
Indeed, again by your own admission, the problems were resolved after you disassembled and reassembled the system with different cables.  Since your arrival, you've been quick to hijack other threads, spew frustration and venom over your issue, and vent agitation against the trouble and bother with all this crap you've had to endure.  Yet, all along, it seems there really was no defect at all on MSI's part.
You've taken the time to customize your profile avatar with a nice Leeds United animation, but can't be trifled to actually learn about how your equipment operates and how to troubleshoot and optimize it.  So it's so long and farewell and thanks for nothing, hmph!  That's quite a remarkable attitude.
Good luck with your future Asus adventures.  Perhaps you'll be more satisfied with that choice, perhaps not.  My sense is people with unhappy, wretched personalities will have the odds against them.
Oh, and please don't fool yourself that you have so much more of a life to live and real work to get done than anyone else here.  You know nothing about the forum members here, but your demeanor reveals the type of life you have.  I, for one, don't envy you one bit.
Take a look at reviews of this Motherboard you will see that most people come to the same opinion as myself.
As for poor support it seems it is a bit hit and miss where ever you go. Some get good support some bad all from the same company.
I have a nice life living in the English countryside with lots of friends, a dog, three cats and nice girlfriend of many years. A massive garden full of fruit trees, fields full of horses both front and back and good neighbours.
Thanks for your good wishes and have a nice week-end your self.

Dadilo, you have gone to some length but sadly no positive result, but at least you have cleared some of the ifs and buts. i have looked at your mobo bios even so it says it supports your cpu q6600 it seems there has been a few updates (see links, particularly please pay attention to the pointer in pictures). you have these options left to you.
1- put the pc on it's side and take the 240 volt plug out (no power what so ever) and clear the way from any cables etc.. and remove the mobo battery with a Small screw driver (push the clip to one side the battery pups out)  and   hold it in your Palm for ten second or so then put it back and put everything back make sure the single memory is firmly in place so is the graphic card. then connect the power and all cables etc the power the pc.
2-your last option before you give up is try another cpu on the  mobo preferably core 2 duo rather than quad and if you get it working your next move is to update the bios and i do not know how good you are in updating bios???.  if none of these works then sadly the mobo is faulty in my opinion but i may be wrong :

  • Stability problems with PC companion

    Hi!
Just out of curiosity, am I the only one having stability problems with my PC after installing PC companion?
I'm getting three or four freezes per day after installing the suite and none after deinstalling.
("freezing": neither CtrlAltDel nor normal pushing of the switch off button work. I have to press the on/off button on the PC for 5s for a hardware switchoff)
We' seem to have traced it to a problem where a driver has the same name as one already installed on windows (apparently some fingerprint stuff). Unfortunately my colleague can't remember precise details anymore as it was some time ago.
    Does anyone experience similar problems?
    Lots of Greetings!
    Volker

so your pc freezes after you open pc companion or without opening it..??
if you want to update yor phone use this instead.

You know what ... this forum is crap ...you ask for help and all you get is a load of crap replys that help in no way at all thnx for wasting my time. And for the record if you guys accually knew how to overclock my cpu with my mobo then u would have just told me with no problems but instead u have wasted about 3 days of my time waiting for usuful reply and help from a decent person ! good job.
Ill figure it out myself as iv already gotten it 3.0 stable with reading only what other ppl used on there bios with short amount of trial and error.
Wow.  Some people just really don't get it...
We all know how to overclock CPUs, of course.  Why are you biting the hand of the arm trying to help you?  I used the P7N Diamond for several months, and also provided a lot of the overclocking tips and hints, along with every beta/performance BIOS MSI released.
If you want me to do the overclocking for you, and rid you of the experience; hell, I have no problem with that.  The P7N is a simple board to overclock until the NB gets too hot.  Max out the FSB term, don't touch the GTL voltages, and adjust the CPU Vcore only when needed.  If you cannot follow anything I said in the last sentence - go back to stock settings.
Do you even know how to stability test an overclocked system?
If you don't want to learn, you're most likely not going to get beyond 3.2 GHz.

  • Performance and Stability Problem with PE9

I just upgraded my computer to a Core i5 with 8G of memory and everything is running much faster.  But my NEW PE9 just run very slow.  Some of the simple tasks take 10-30 second to complete.  Even Windows 7 will often come out to ask if I want to wait for PE9 to wake up or kill the process.  When I want to change the size of a video clip, it just doesn't work at all due to performance.  It will take PE9 20-30 seconds to resize the video clip.  Without some realtime feedback of the size, it is impossible to do the resizing and this is a very fundamental operation.  PE9 often crash or seize up as well, I didn't have any of these problem with PE3.0.  I upgraded to PE9 simply because my PE3.0 for WIndows XP is not comletely compatible with Windows 7 (some of the text displace does not show up).
Do anyone else have issue with performance and stability?

  • NForce 3: Problems with Maxtor Diamond Max 10 16MB Cache?

I heard that the NForce 3 chipset does have problems with these hard drives.
Could anyone tell me more about it? I'd like to get 2 of these 250GB drives for my system, replacing my older 80GB Diamond Max 9 discs.
Do these discs run normally, or won't they?

I'm using the first port nearest the CPU which comes up in the BIOS as Master 5 - as far as I can work out these are the Nvidia ones.
I've disabled the second IDE chain in the BIOS but it worked before that.
I did build the machine when pissed (not a great idea) so my memory of the steps taken is a little hazy.
I partitioned the disk with a Windows ME floppy before trying to install XP - this turned to be a bad idea as either XP or the board didn't want to recognise it.
Wiped partitions and partitioned it from the XP CD- fine.
    Added second disk after install.

  • Stability problems with qemu

    hi all,
I've been playing around with qemu last week, but i'm experiencing some stability problems. But I can't really evoke a crash, it's just when i'm doing something in qemu (trying to install damnsmalllinux on hd) en that doesn't really work like it should, my entire pc hangs. If I'm lucky and the qemu window didn't have the focus, I can ctrl-alt-backspace en restart X, but the qemu sessions keep running (hanging?) in the background. pkill qemu doesn't cut it either.
As my laptop is getter somewhat older (2002), I'm a bit worried that the hardware is getting flaky.
Running kernel26 2.6.22.5-1, with qemu but without kqemu.
How the test what's the real problem?

QEMU has never felt very solid to me. I suggest you try VirtualBox.

I have been having lots of problems with Windows XP just locking up on me.  It has happened 3 times now, and I am tiring of re-building my PC from scratch.  Every time, it works for a while, and then, just locks up one day.
At this point, I've removed my partition, rebuilt it, reformatted and re-installed windows.  I'm currently running the AMI v1.3 bios.  I've loaded the latest nVidia drivers (9.53 driver package).  I've loaded the latest graphic drivers from EVGA (169.02_XP32).
I've read lots of posts in various forums about issues with SATA settings on nVidia systems, but I can't seem to find a post that is clear about the best settings.  They mentioned disabling command queuing, using/not using SiL drivers, etc.  Can anyone offer any insight that might help me straighten out my system?  I am close to tossing it out a window.

  • Problem with K9N DIAMOND at boot

    Hello,
I've a problem with my mainboard K9N Diamon.
    I've this configuration :
    K9N Diamond
    Athlon X2 6000+ with Zalman 9700NT
    2x1go DDR 2 PC2 6400 at 800Mhz Corsair DOMINATOR
    Thermaltake Thoughpower 700W
    Case Thermaltake Kandalf VA9000BWS
    GeForce 7600GT Msi
    2x 320go WD HDD
    Dvd burn LG H42L
So, When I plug the power cable, the pc turn on, but 3sec later it stop. I push the power button, nothink.
I change the alimentation, with a 350w enermax, 500w PFC, 500w thermaltake, nothink.
The D-Bracket tell me no infomation, at the shutdown after 3sec, the led are different at the last boot. Impossible to identify the problem.
I test a 4200+ with 2x512mo DDR2 PC2 6400 at 800mhz corsair XMS2 and NX 6200 msi, but no change. When I plug the power cable it start, and 2 3 sec later it stop.
I reset the bios, with this method :
    Code: [Select]
    1.Shut Down the PC.
2.Unplug the Power Supply from the AC outlet and unplug the cord from the back of the Power Supply.
3.If your Power Supply has an On/Off switch on the back of it turn it Off.
    4.Ground yourself and your PC.
    5.Remove all DDR2 DIMMs
6.Remove the following power connectors on your mainboard:
       *JPWR1 - ATX 24-pin Power Connector
       *JPW1 - ATX 12V Power Connector
       *JPWR2 - ATX 12V Power Connector
    7.Clear CMOS.
8.Reattached power connectors in Step 6 above.
9.Place a DDR2 DIMM in DIMM3 (the slot closest to the CPU).
10.Plug AC cord into Power Supply and AC outlet.
11.If your Power Supply has an On/Off switch on the back of it turn it back On.
    12.Boot the PC.
    But no result.
I test the CPU, graphic card and memory on other PC, It work fine.
So, I think the mainboard is broken, I see problem like mine, but it's different here.
I'm for MSI, I've all pc with this material, and all of my friend / custommer, but here I'm disappointed.
This is an problem with a production series default ?  I dunno.
So I I'am for MSI, and I think I'v bad luck in this moment !
Sorry for my english, i come from Corsica ^^

Thanks again for your answer and Help.
    I've trid to start with just : Athlon 6000+ / 512mo DDR2 .
The system start, 2sec later stop. for restart with power button its impossible. I change the power button with reset button, same problem.
I test with an screw driver, the system start when I plug power supply, and after 2 3second stop. I test to start with screw driver, I similar... but 10sec later, after short reset, hdd led, its start, for 2 3 sec ! LOL. To restart again, I did short reset, hdd, led, hdd, reset, power, reset, .......... and at one moment its star 2 3 sec !!! Dor restart I do it again. LOL.
It's very strange. When its want , it start ! U_u
So tomorrow, I contact my supplier to change the mainboard ^^ !
I think its the only solution !
Thank again for your help, If you have many idea, I take that again :p
    See you soon

  • Stability problems with Win7 x64 and Boot Camp 3.1...

Before I was running win 7 with Boot Camp 3.0 and On top of that I installed my Chipset and Graphics from Nvidias Website. System was running without any major problems.
Now I have win7 and BootCamp 3.1 and the laptop runs like crap... System freezes sometimes only for a minute most of the time I need to hold power button.
The last time I has ScanDisk start on me and start checking. it found about 200 missing files some unindexed and MFT bitmap was repaired...
Do not know why, I'm unable to figure out what was causing that.
Currently I have win7 x86 with bootcamp 3.1 installed and The system works good.
I think there is an issue with the 3.1 x64 driver package.
If anyone has any Ideas on what I can do to figure out why the system runs so unpredictable with 3.1 x64 drivers installed. I'm whiling to experiment and reinstall win7 x64 as many times as needed so i can send an error report to apple to get this issue fixed.

Wow, i've been running windows 7 64 bit in boot camp since I got my copy as a beta tester in July and never had any issues like you're describing. Boot camp 3.0 worked fine (other than the light in the audio port and minimal touchpad control, and the still present inability to dim the screen dynamically based on brightness around me). And I've had no problems with boot camp 3.1 so far. In the previous BC versions, I went to the nvidia site and downloaded whatever the current driver was for the video, but nothing specific for the chipset. With 3.1 I haven't done even that, just using what the boot camp update installed. Have you tried it with just the BC 3.1 drivers, not getting anything extra from Nvidia or anyone, just to see what happens from that point first?
About the only time I had any issues with diskchecking is when I accidentally close fusion and it abends my windows session. I make a point then of booting and telling it to ignore the disk check, editing the registry to reset the flag so it doesn't do it, then just run a disk check from within windows telling it NOT to fix anything, so that it can verify it's clean. I found the normal disk check in the preboot environment is horrendous on the MBP, takes me literally hours to run through despite it never finding anything to fix.

  • Finally up with P7N Diamond!

    Yeah!
Third time was the charm.  Got my third board back from New Egg this weekend and got everything moved over to it.  I held my breath, and powered on the system to get the LCS running, and I got a post.  After fininishing the hardware setup and installing the os and sp1 I held my breath again as I installed all four memory chips and it booted.  So remembering my previous issue with 4 chips in the board, I powered down, pulled the plug and discharged the board.  Pluged it back in, held my breath for the third and final time and hit the power...and everything booted perfectly.  Finally, got a board that works.  Now all I got to do is figure out what the problem is with my floppy and ide dvd burner (which I've been having problems with long before the P7.)
Thanks to everyone for the help with my memory chip issue, turns out that it was just a bad board.  I love how easy it is to work with NewEgg on RMA's -- no questions asked and they finally return ship overnight.

I'm very glad to see you posting this.  I know how frustrating dealing with faulty hardware and rma's can be. I hope you enjoy the board as much as I am.

  • Stability problem with CF7

    Hi,
We have upgrade from CF 5 to CF MX7, since then our server is
unstable the CF service seems to be crashing every day or every 2
days. Is there a fix to this?

    > i must be making it up then.
    That was my first thought.
Seriously, people are often wont to blame something else for
    their own
shortcomings. I don't doubt that your site was stable under
    CFMX61 and now
isn't stable under CFMX7x. In a big application (which yours
    no doubt is),
there's a lot of scope to encounter *something* that in
    CFMX61 zigs, but in
CFMX7x zags, and that could be causing problems for you; but
    it's not
inherent instability in CFMX7, it's just "whatever code
    you're using
doesn't work quite the same". Your code could have been
    inadvertently
leveraging some sort of CFMX61 bug which was fixed in CFMX7,
    or something
like that. An obvious example of this sort of thing happening
    is when CFCs
were finally made to work properly in CFMX61, and suddenly a
    lot of code
written in CFMX60 stopped working as expected (whilst not
    actually
*erroring*). Or when CFMX7 "fixed" the way CFMX61 duplicated
    objects:
instead of converting it to a struct, it just threw an error.
Obviously what you're experiencing isn't as obvious as "that
    behaviour now
throws an error", it's more insidious. But I'm "sure" that
    it's a problem
with your code, not a problem with CFMX7, intrinsically.

  • All sorts of problems with P4N Diamond

    Hello all
I am trying to get my P4N diamond motherboard to work and I am starting to get pretty p****d off with it. I have built many systems before and on the whole they work fine pretty much straight away.
The first few times I tried to boot the syetem up I got a series of low and high beeps from the board and I couldn't even get into the BIOS set up screen. After unplugging USB devices and network ect I finall ymanaged to get into the BIOS. If I leave my printer plugged in (USB) I get a beep from the system speaker every now and then.
I then tried booting to windows. I have 2 windows builds on my hard drives - both of them crash when I try to boot into them, I have tried safe mode.
I then decided that I would install a fresh copy of windows (even though I only did this about a week ago). I put my windows CD in (XP media centre) and try to go through the normal set up procedure. I I try to repair the current installation or install a new copy it crashes each time it examines the discs.
I then load the drivers that came with the MB as the wondows installer is booting up - I load 3, 2 form one disc and 1 from the other. Now when I try to install a new copy it hangs on please wait.
I have a 400W power supply this one, 2 IDE CD drives, one IDE hard disk (secondary) and 1 SATA Hard drive. FOr most of what I was trying above I had the IDE drive disconnected and was jsut trying to get it to work with the SATA drive.
I think this is something to do with Raid drivers (even though I don't want a RAID array) but I don't know how to fix it.
I was hoping to have this all workign for tomorrow morning. Now I am goign to have to use my slow old laptop for work instead.
I REALLY hope someone can help me with this.

I might have a little bit of insight for you on your problems.
    1. Beeps from your P4N:
You should get one beep for every USB device you have connected to your system.
    2. Windows crashes when installing:
Make sure that you have NO USB devices connected, if have USB mouse or keyboard, get old ones for initial install and then once windows is running connect them, also you can get adapters. Also make sure that you only have ONE stick of RAM in when installing. If you have two, wait till you have windows up and running to install the other. Make sure that you have NO scratches on the back of the CD.
    3. Diamond Clue CODE no good.
Call MSI on this, you are not the only one.
When building a new computer you should always build bare bones to make sure that you can boot with no errors. Its really not needed to have your printer hooked up the first time you are going to boot up your new computer, these are the type on things that cause conflicts. I would try to get things running bare bones here...that means the mininum. Try one hard drive...then work your way up. If you dont want RAID it should be easier for you, make sure that you have the jumper settings right on all drives. ALSO it would help if you would create a sig line (see mine below) with all your hardware. Make sure that you incluse your PSU 12v...you have a dual rail 15 and 14. It will help the mods help you.
GL and post back with ?'s
