Stack icons

I just got a new Mac Pro a couple weeks ago, switching from Windows.
I like the stacks in the dock, but I didn't like the fact that the icon in the dock changes to the first file in the directory. This especially bothered me for stack I put in for the application directory. So I changed the stack so that it always shows the application folder icon instead.
The problem is that now I want to do the same thing with Documents, Downloads, etc. But, for the life of me, I can't remember how I did it.
Can anyone help me out here?
Cliff

Hi Cliff Addy, right click on the stack you want to change, it brings up the menu half way down put a tick next to Folder it then displays the folder icon. Mitch

  • Custom "stacks" icons in date added view/sort

i've found various workarounds for custom stacks icons that sort by name, date creation, date modified. the only one that i couldn't resolve was the "date added" which is what is most useful for the downloads folder.
i had automator "record" my actions of opening the downloads folder, deleting a "downloads folder icon" that i had placed in there earlier, and then undoing the deletion. this made the "downloads folder icon" the most newly added. and then i saved it as a folder action attached to my downloads folder.
sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and it hijacks the mouse control for the second or two that it's running.
but would any genius that knows applescript better than i know of a way to do this as an applescript. it probably wouldn't be as "sloppy" as a recorded automator workflow and wouldn't hijack the mouse control.
    thanks in advance.

  • Multi-chat and stacked icon questions

Trying to multichat with two family members for the first time. One of the icons is showing only as the single camera, rather than the stacked icon, since her upgrade to 10.4.3 it seems (not positive about this.) She repaired permissions-- no luck. She has definitely had the triple icon before, but then we had no third party to chat with. Now we do...
What else to try, as it seems her iBook G4 should have the power, and our single person video chats are fantastic?
Does iChat monitor bandwidth and determine whick icon you get?
What else can we try to get the triple icon back?
    Thanks in advance-- Scott

    Courtesy of Ralph Johns:
Copy and Paste the bold line of text below into Terminal (when ichat is shut down) and then hit enter.
    /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
This will start up iChat and produce a log in the Terminal window
At the top of the log you should see where iChat has calculated what it thinks its your incoming and outgoing bandwidth and also how many video and audio participants it believes you can handle.
Afaik this is based on your system specs and available bandwidth. My iBook G4 1Ghz has the multiple video icon and claims it can support up to 3 video chat users. This is on a 2mbit connection however.

  • Deleted stack icon on desk top

I am going to sound really stupid. My stack icon on the desk top disappeared with a little smoke cloud, how do i get it back?

Go to Finder and then drag the icon back down to the dock. You cannot delete items from within the Stacks view. You have to go to Finder and then find the folder you want to delete the file from and delete it from there.

  • Nice improvement to stacks icons

    Hello everyone-
I tried some Leopard GUI tweaks suggested in ComputerWorld
    http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleI d=9084398&pageNumber=2
and I found the application "Stacks In Da Place"
    http://www.eagle-of-liberty.com/stacksindaplace/
combined with Yasushi Chida's drawer-style icons
    http://www.geocities.jp/chy065/
to be a really nice improvement over what Apple does by default for stack icons in Leopard. I usually don't do GUI tweaks, but I have never liked the implementation of Stacks. This is, IMO, much nicer and I thought some of the rest of you might like to give it a try.
In the 10.5.2 update Apple fixed a lot of Leopard's GUI problems, but the Stacks icons is one area that they have not yet addressed.
FWIW, I like the Tiger-style folder icons better too. The embossed blue ones are too difficult to differentiate, I think the older ones were much better.
Oh well, it's a matter of taste I suppose. Anyway, thought someone might enjoy these Stacks changes.

Thanks for posting Michael, I personally think Apple made some bad decisions with Leopards GUI, stacks being one of them, the "3D" dock being another.

  • Stack icon.  How do I get it onto the dock?

I do not have a stack icon on my dock. I have tried dragging the "download" folder from "finder" onto the dock and right-clicking but all that does is produce all the downloads as a grid. I want my applications etc to appear as a "stack" and I cannot see how to do that. All help gratefully received.

Hi David and Welcome to Apple Community.
First, when you drag a folder to the Dock, be sure it is the original and not an alias.
Be sure to drag it to the right side of the divider line on the side with Trash.
If you are doing it correctly, a right click should produce a contextual menu with "Fan, Grid, List and Automatic". From what you say I think you want List view, so choose that.
    Let us know.

  • How to change stacks icon in dock?

I love the stacks feature in Leopard. However, it seems to choose the first application in the stack alphabetically as the one to show in the dock. This is logical (if you stacked all the apps by alphabet, the top one would be the first in alpha order), but I as a user remember a group of apps by a particular signature app. For me, the Graphics stack is more immediately recognizable if the icon is of GraphicConverter than if it is of DigitalColor Meter; don't ask me why.
Is there a way to change the default behavior of stacks icon display in the dock, letting me select the Graphic Converter icon for my Graphics stack? (This would be similar to the "Make Key Photo" command in iPhoto.) I understand that if I ever were to remove my chosen application from the stack, the displayed icon would revert to the default alpha selection.

Actually, I may have spoken too soon. I did as directed, setting it to Display as Folder. Then I went to the actual folder, invoked the Get Info command, and pasted the Graphic Converter icon into the icon preview. This worked just great in the Finder window, but the dock icon remains a folder icon.

  • Stack icons are invisible and labels grey with no way to identify them!

Why is my stack not working? I can't identify anything in my stack but the stack does work ie i can click on the icon, which i can see but not identify, and it will open a document i have downloaded?

My stacks icons do this as well. My Applications stack (which uses a grid view) works fine, even when this issue is affecting the others and if you change them to grid view, you get labels and pics. I have had this happen twice . . . the first time I logged out and back in and that fixed the problem. killall Dock in terminal did not help. I have no idea what causes/d this . . . it seems completely random. I'd hate to have to resign myself to a log out/in or restart everytime this starts happening.

  • Desktop "Stacker" Icon

Some how the "Document Stacker 'Icon" on the desktop is missing. Any idea where I can look to place it back on the desktop?
    Thank You
    Dick

    Hi Dick,
Open a Finder window and select your Home Folder on the left. Simply drag your Stacks icon to the Dock. Make sure you drag it to the right of the divider line next to the Trash icon. Your Stacks folder will remain in your Home Folder.

  • How to retrieve the stacks icon on the dock?I accidentally put it in the trash.

how to retrieve the stacks icon on the dock?i accidentall put it in the trash.

Find the folder it linked to in the Finder and drag that to the right of the Dock's divider line. It'll most likely be either the Downloads or Documents folder in your home folder, which is accessible from the Finder's Go menu.

  • Jagged stacks icons

after a fresh restart, my 'fan view' stack icons look perfectly fine and smooth. fully anti-aliased.
but after a while, i notice the icons that are rotated a bit show a good amount of aliasing. what's the deal with this? the problem goes away after a restart. it does not go away after a finder relaunch.
computer specs are below. i have the radeon 9700 graphics card.

So, the only situation I had ever used that updated stacks was downloading files with Google Chrome. To test, I tried just moving files into the stack with Finder and downloading files with some other browsers...the icons updated as they should.
I then ran across these 2 articles (I had searched for the longest time before posting here and couldn't find anything similar) that describe exactly what my issue is and what's causing it:
    http://steforce.oin.name/read/google_chrome_and_stacks/
    http://steforce.oin.name/read/chrome_and_stacks_part2/
So, it looks like a Chrome bug. It's pretty obscure and I couldn't find anything on it before, so I assumed it was OS-related. Off to their bug reporting sites...thanks for the help though! Hopefully other people in my situation will finally find something in search results.

  • HT3739 how do I replace the Stack icon to the dock?

the stack icon located in the dock has disappeared.  how do I restore it?

Drag it back from the Finder; the Documents and Downloads folders are located in your home folder, and the Applications folder is at the top level of the drive.

  • Anyone know how to create/use particular icons for stack icons?

    Hiya!
I currently have the following folders as some of my individual stacks in my dock.
    Pictures
    Applications
    Music
    Movies
    Home
Now if I right-click on any of them and select 'Display as Stack' then the first file in the folder gets used as the dock icon for that stack folder. So obviously this could change from time to time as more files get added to folders.
Does anyone know how I can use a particular picture/icon to remain as the icon for a specific stack please?
So for example I would like to drag the 'Downloads' folder down to the dock and have it as a stack. But it never uses the circular green icon as its icon when I select 'Display as Stack'. Instead simply displays the stack as a blue folder with an arrow pointing down. Anyone know how I can set it to the circular green icon please?
Thanks for any help, its appreciated.
    Shams.

yes, you need to apply a custom icon to your Downloads folder using the link I gave you. then that icon will display in the dock instead of the blue folder icon. there are lots of places to get custom icons like Interface lift
    http://interfacelift.com/icons-mac/
you can also use Liteicon http://www.freemacsoft.net/LiteIcon/ or Candybar http://www.panic.com/candybar/ to easily manipulate system icons.

  • What's the deal with the 'stacks' icons in the dock?

I'm still getting used to stacks in the dock.
What I can't understand is why I have to look at icons that have nothing to do with the item?
My Applications folder stack shows the Address Book item on top and my Utilities folder stack shows the Activity Monitor icon on top.
I "get" it... this is a stack of items and that's the item on top - alphabetically based.
But it's ugly and not what I want. Since I'm always going to see the same icon, looking at the address book makes little sense. I'd prefer to see the Application folder icon or something more generic in its place.
    Any good solutions or options?

I hope that Apple's designers wouldn't snort at this criticism. This is clearly a valid "usability" issue. What possible purpose could it serve to have the icon in the dock be determined by the alphabetical order of the contents of the folder (or any of the other sorting options for that matter). I found myself having to remember the order of my folders in the stacks area in order to figure out which to select. That's just wrong. The sorting is a valid purpose for when you click on the stack and it expands, but not for the icon in the dock. And showing just a sliver of the 2nd document or folder? What possible purpose can that serve? Even with icon size and magnification at max, you can't see enough of the folder content to be of any use. This is very unlike Apple, which spends so much effort getting every element of the GUI just right. I can only hope that this was just something that was done early in the design just to show that it could be done, but they just never got around to fixing it before the software was released. It is really annoying!
I've done the empty folder workaround. It's better, but still pretty pathetic.
