Stacks Animation Bumpy After 10.5.2 Update- Only in Applications Stack
For some reason, after I updated to Mac OS X 10.5.2, the stacks animation [only in the Applications folder] has became extremely jerky. Is there a fix for this, or am I stuck with a bumpy animation?
Thank you so much for your help everyone!
-GMac.
PS- Here's a file with a video of it. This is exactly how it looks to me.
It's only 1.09 MB.

I have noticed this right from the start with Leopard. In my case it seems to depend on the number of items in the folder. If a folder has more than a certain number of items (thirty or so?) the animation becomes jerky. If you hold the shift key while opening a stack you get a slo mo view of the effect. When I was in my local Apple store I checked on one or two of the computers on display there out of curiosity and they exhibited the same behaviour. It's no biggie in the great scheme of things - just a mild annoyance that a future update will probably cure.

Why did my Application Stack Disappear after I downloaded an OS update?
My Application Stack disappeared after I downloaded an OS update. I can get it back as a folder on the dock but not the Application Stack. I am relatively new to Macs so maybe I missed something in the setup.
Right-click or Control-click on the Applications folder icon in the Dock. A popup menu will open. Select Stack from the Display As section.

Late 2013 Keyboard / Trackpad still unresponsive AFTER EFI 1.3 update
I thought I would start a new thread / discussion since the previous thread here seems to be riddled with "install the update" suggestions and off topic assistance such as battery life questions. I have also logged detailed information regarding this issue on my professional blog here.
Anyway, here is a short, condensed version of my story. I have had two brand new late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro's with the 2.4/16GB/256 configuration. Since the config I chose is a CTO, this problem has been going on since the day the first model arrived (December 10th, 2013). The EFI update was preinstalled on both systems and I can verify that because the boot ROM version is MBP111.0138.B03 (the boot rom prior to the update ended in B00 or B01). I am also an AASP and an ACMT meaning that I am certified and employed with a company that allows me to fix all Apple hardware under warranty. I am well-versed in technology and Apple hardware and I have never seen anything quite like this.
Here is the quick summary of things I have attempted and I have been able to re-recreate the issue:
The system will not mount the root device when I boot via a known good external hard drive running 10.9.1. Verbose mode and Single user mode reports a still waiting for root device error.
The system (rMBP) will not boot from another system (late 2011 MacBook Pro 13") when said system (late 2011 MacBook Pro) pushed into target disk mode via thunderbolt.
My system, rMBP, will boot up with the internal SSD but will not allow the keyboard and track pad to function. The caps lock key will not illuminate. The keyboard and track pad will work OUTSIDE of 10.9.1, however. I have installed a clean internet recovery version of Mavericks over 4 times.
If I put my system, rMBP, into target disk mode and connect to any other computer via thunderbolt and boot it on the other Apple systems, the operating system running on the internal SSD of the rMBP will work just fine -- keyboard and mouse included (again, as a target disk mode thunderbolt connection to another host).
If I use a remote agent to connect to my rMBP such as LogMeIn or vnc, the keyboard and mouse will work just fine from the remote system which leaves me to beleive that this is not a software issue nor is it fully a hardware issue since the keyboard and mouse work outside of mavericks.
I believe we are still dealing with a firmware issue here. It took several tries to create a bootable device for the late 2013 rMBP since NONE of my other up-to-date and verified working external drives will boot but I finally created a bootable USB stick. When I run the system from the USB stick, the keyboard and trackpad will work but if I touch the keyboard and / or trackpad in 5 second intervals, I will receive the following error:

I had actually created a system log query to search for the above. The search string includes "the USB " and any entry after 1/1/2014. The above error should only present itself when waking an Apple system from sleep and instead it happens on every touch after, at least, a 5 second period of non-use.
When I remote into the system using LogMeIn, VNC or even use an application called ShareMouse which shares the keyboard and mouse of my Windows system with any other computer on the network presuming they have ShareMouse also installed, I can use the system as I would expect, without continuous error in the console log. When I check the system information, Bluetooth is completely disabled and the USB hub does not report address information. Since the keyboard, track pad, Bluetooth peripheral and USB ports all sit on the same USB stack / hub this leads me to think there is a firmware / driver failure occurring after Mavericks loads. The only two errors I see when I am using a remote keyboard and mouse via a remote service is as follows:
1/5/14 6:58:16.000 PM kernel[0]: The USB device HubDevice (Port 1 of Hub at 0xfa000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)
1/5/14 6:58:16.000 PM kernel[0]: The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Track pad (Port 2 of Hub at 0xfa100000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)
Bottom line: Even for those of you who have installed the EFI 1.3 update and have verified that your freezing issues have ceased, for the most part, could you check your console log for the above error. My guess is, you will still see the error repeated there in 5 second intervals if you touch the keyboard, put your hands up for 5 seconds, touch the keyboard and / or track pad again. My concerns is that this is a product line issue since it has occurred on two brand new systems and the log errors appeared on another model on display in an Apple store. (The display model was logged into an Admin account so I took the liberty of checking the console log.)I'm tired of this message. Bought a Mac 13" retina from bestbuy that was shipped to me on December 24th. The finder took a long time to load 'All My Files' with three to five second delay. My older macbook unibody (late 2009)was instantaneous. My wife's macbook aluminum (2011) also loaded the files instantaneously. Sorry I digressed but while I was trying to research that issue, I was caught up in the console and multiple of these,'The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 5 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)' kept showing up whenever I touched the trackpad in intervals of 6-7 seconds.
Called up apple, used screen sharing and after spending an hour was transferred to the second tier tech. The second tier rep troubleshooted and told me it WAS an issue and asked me to go to apple store to run diagnostics and that most likely I'll receive another notebook in exchange since it fell within 14 day period. I told him the internet was filled with this discussion and asked if it was prevalent. He said it was the first time he has come across this issue and most forums on the internet may not be addressing my specific issue. I wasn't convinced and simply returned it at best buy.
The unfortunate thing is I sold my macbook unibody and having owned 2 macbooks for last eight years I caved and ordered another 13". After a week and a half I received it today and guess what, I see the same message filling up my console.
I noted the following,
* Use guest account and you'll never see the message,'The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 5 of Hub at 0x14000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)'. All admin accounts created will throw that error.
Though off topic I'd like to state what happened with the Finder's 'All my files' issue:
1. Once I upgraded my older macbook unibody to mavericks, the 'All my files' took longer to load as the new macbook pro.
2. I was able to replicate the same slow load times with macbook aluminium(2011) when I upgraded it to mavericks.
Oh, I also showed the slowness to the representatives and all they tried doing was reindex spotlight which did no good.
So much for 1799$ notebook and the "free" OS. Very disappointed. -
Can someone point me to where I can download the right driver(s) / updates that fix thw Windows 8.1 mess that crippled video playback in the Modern/Metro Win8 interface please?
I had other issues with wireless (which I fixed by buying a Linsys 802.11ac USB nub - finally decent range & performance), but really want to get this Win 8.1 video playback issue fixed.
OS is Windows 8.1
Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600
System Model 20175
System SKU Lenovo_MT_20175
BIOS Version/Date Lenovo 66N55WW 2/28/2013
BIOS Mode UEFI
HD Graphics 4000 Driver date 10/1/2013
Driver Version 10.18.10.3316
Monitor driver is generic PnP Monitor by Microsoft, dated 6/21/2006
Driver Version 6.3.9600.16384
Purchased the system May, 2013.
Very disappointed that Microsoft/Intel/Lenovo forced this 8.1 "upgrade" on us without having checked it for flaws in operation like this. I've read other people having this, and similar problems, so any fixes / suggestions / links are greatly welcomed.(Note that all of the following applies only to the Yoga 13)
I think the previous reply is inaccurate in several ways. Let me address each one:
"Seems like the fix for many of our Windows 8.1 update issues is to roll back to the Windows 8 drivers Lenovo offers on its site (Conexant Audio Driver in this case)"
This isn't quite correct. There is no need to "roll back" to any previous driver versions. What actually happened with the Windows 8.1 upgrade is that the Windows installation process reinstalled or refreshed all of the drivers in the system, and for some reason this driver installation process screwed up and left some drivers not functioning correctly. In almost all cases the solution is to simply reinstall that driver with the current/same version. The Conexant driver is the poster child for this problem. The version of the driver that comes with the Windows 8.1 upgrade is the same as the version on the Lenovo site. However it is often necessary to reinstall this driver to get it installed correctly.
I just want to reiterate that this is not a version problem, it's a problem with the way 8.1 reinstalled the drivers. This need to reinstall drivers affected people differently, with some people needing to reinstall other drivers as well, such as the Intel Thermal Framework drivers, etc.
Windows 8.1 comes with newer versions (also newer than the reposted drivers on the Lenovo site) of the network Wifi drivers that for my system have been an improvement. However I have not experienced a lot of the Wifi issues that others have reported. The only issue I have had with Wifi is that it was always a bit slow to connect after coming out of sleep mode (30-60 seconds). After the 8.1 upgrade my Wifi connects very fast (less than 5 seconds).
Windows 8.1 also came with an updated Intel graphics driver that is newer than the one on the Lenovo site. I am not aware of any problems with this new version.
My Yoga 13 is now functioning perfectly after the 8.1 update, although I did have to perform the reinstall of the Conexant drivers, and I had to reapply the fix for the touch screen missing the first swipe. I recommend the list of Yoga 13 fixes mentioned on this site.
"Microsoft or Lenovo should add a setting to the "Configure Windows Update" options - it should be "Wait 6 months after the update is published for it to stabilize"
I don't agree with this as the drivers that come with 8.1 weren't unstable or problematic. Again, the problem is with the 8.1 installation process, and I do agree that Microsoft should work on fixing that. It has certainly caused a lot of people some grief, but it also seems that we have a solution which is the driver reinstalls.
I also don't recommend turning off Windows update.
Finally, it may be that some of the issues you bulleted are more serious than I am aware, as I haven't had all of these problems. I would like to know more about these:
"Kill the video / audio in Windows Apps (aka "Modern" interface) - Netflix, ESPN videos, CNN videos, etc. "
This is certainly a common problem. At least we have the fix for this (reinstall the Conexant drivers).
"Degrade WLAN performance (range and speed)"
I am skeptical that 8.1 is responsible for Wifi issues. Seems like in general the new 8.1 network stack is better. I know that many people had wifi issues prior to the update.
"Fuzz out the resolution / display such that Display has to be turned down from 150% to "small""
I don't know about this issue, so I would like to hear more.
Mess up touchpad, keyboard, tablet-mode keyboard
This again seems more like a problem that existed before 8.1, as many people had issues with this. The most consistent solution seems to be disabling the "ymc" service.

Kernel panic on first boot after 10.6.8 update
Hi,
Here are the fact:
1) I systematically get a kernel panic on first boot after an attempt to update to 10.6.8 (was able to revert to 10.6.7 using Time Machine; now I'm running my tests on a clone). While doing the update, there are NO USB connexion to my laptop, nor ethernet connexion. Only the power cable.
2) I DO NOT use the software Hands Off which is known to cause such an issue
3) I've tested this on two different hard drive (with a clone of my system)
4) I disabled all third app on startup just to be sure this wasn't a conflict problem
5) After a kernel panic, I'm always able to boot in safe mode
6) I did try both the normal update and the combo update (same result)
Now I'm kinda stuck. The next test I'm thinking performing is to update while in safe mode. But I don't know if it will help.
And yes, my permissions are all fine. Any idea how to troubleshoot this? I believe I need to be in 10.6.8 in order to update to Lion?
Many thanks in advance!
ParneixHi,
Sorry about that. Below you'll find the log of my latest kernel panic.
I did follow instructions suggested by user "ds store". The only "kext" file that I've got (by running the commands in the Terminal) was related to the software LittleSnitch. I downloaded it again in order to run the uninstaller. I'll try again to update to 10.6.8 under those conditions and report here.

Safari slow-launch, crashing after 3.2.1 update
After installing the new update (3.2.1) for Safari yesterday, the application has difficulty launching. The icon bounces in the dock for a long period of time (sometimes 2 minutes) before the application finally opens or crashes or I force-quit. I have repaired permissions, restarted, moved/deleted the history.plist and the historyindex.plist
I'm running on a Macbook, OS X.5.5. I do not have any third-party hacks/add-ons, and I do not have a wireless mouse or keyboard.
Here is the crash report:

There's much more to the report than this; this is all that would fit. If there's something specific I should include, tell me and I'll add it. Also, the optical drive tries to eject each time I force-quit Safari.
Any help would be AMAZING. Thanks in advance! Why has Apple done absolutely nothing to correct the Safari crashing/hanging problem? I have always loved my Mac computers. We have 3 in my home now, but if they continue to do nothing to resolve this problem, I may jump ship. If they are release something so lousy, they might as well work for Dell instead of ruining Apple's good name.
I--we shouldn't have to keep deleting files and such weeks after they release such shoddy software. Their is a reason we mac addicts pay more for Mac products. We think they are superior to other computers, but they are going to quickly go the way of the U.S car makers if this continues.
I'm sure this will be deleted immediately. Shouldn't they be focusing on correcting the software problems, rather than silencing those who complain, and having the buyer of their product putting bandaids on their browser? -
Kernel Panic Error after last MAC OSX update
Hi all,
My first post here.
Last week, after install the last update of MAC OSX on my intel IMac (last of 2009), when the computer was restarting, a kernel error screen appears...
I've launched the safe mode, and the computer starts fine and I've execute the disk utility to repair HDD and rights. I've done the same initializing from the installation DVD, but the kernel error appears again...
I leave only the usb apple keyboard plugged, and I don't understand why this error still happening, and of course why it occurs after a MAC OSX standard update (no new hardware or software installed in the las month).
I'm little desperate with this issue
kernel error.
Many thanks in advance!
Best regards
Hugo

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

It does look like the com.metakine.handsoff.driver, whatever that's about. -
After the latest iTunes update neither of my iPods are recognized by iTunes, so I am unable to sync. When I run diagnostics it says no device connected. My laptop sees my iPod so I know it is connected. I have tried all of the recommended iTunes fixes and none work. I tried deleting and reinstalling both an older version and the newest version. The older version would not reconize my music libray. Any thouhts?
I tried deleting and reinstalling both an older version and the newest version.
Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

System Preferences no longer stick after 10.10.1 update
I've upgraded from OS X 10.10 to 10.10.1 today.
The upgrade caused various system preferences to change, and now I cannot change them back.
While System Preferences.app seems to accept my changes, they are reverted after I quit and restart System Preferences.
For example:
Language & Region:
- I used to have various languages in the list of my preferred languages. Since the update, only German remains in the list. Adding other languages does not stick.
- My Region is set to Germany - English, which causes german text but english number formats to be used. Changing the number format to german does not stick.
General:
- When I click the scroll bar, this now causes the document to move by one page. I used to have the other setting (move to that location), but cannot reenable that.
- Windows are now closed upon quitting applications. I don't want this, but removing the check box does not stick.
Does anybody have an idea what the root cause may be and how to fix this?
With kind regards
Piers WalterBack up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
Using Adobe Photoshop CS2 version 9 and have updated it, but when stacking photos, it comes up with PSD, whereas I want Jpeg, and I change the format to Jpeg and the box then comes up with cannot save as there is a program error. Be very grateful for help with this, please.
jpg does not support Layers.
Just to make sure, what exactly do you mean by "stacking photos" and what do you want to achieve thereby? -

iPad2 64g wifi + cellular - very slow and non-responsive since iOS 8.1 update. nonstandard Apps seem to be working fine.. it’s the standard item like photos and safari that don't respond.
photos - (which I use daily to show clients examples) will freeze and kick me out back to the home page when trying to do anything from open a photo for viewing to trying to delete a photo. Edit.. forget it. better off using an alternate app to edit a photo as it locks up and crashes every time. I really need to be able to view the photos on my iPad2
safari - good luck using any hyper link…. It doesn’t respond. Even at Apple’s website. Sometimes it crashes but most of the time it just ignores me like I haven’t touched the screen
Overall - the touch screen is glitchy since the iOS 8.1 update. It was slow after the iOS 8.0 update but has become almost unusable after the 8.1 update.
I cannot afford to purchase a new iPad. And I really need to find a way to make this one work.
I did read about how to restore to an older iOS version. The only problems are all of my laptop is Windows based and the instructions assumed you had a Mac. I did a backup to iTunes prior to the 8.0 update but I have also done backups since. So I am not sure I have a “clean” iOS 7 backup.
Any ideas would be appreciated Thank you in advance for your help

For the touch issues in Safari, does scrolling or zooming the page before you try to tap a link make it work again? I've read a few posts that this may be a workaround for that issue. -

After doing a widows update itunes will not work at all
after doing a widows update itunes will not work at all
hiya!
I get the itunes has encounterd a problem and needs to close, sorry for the inconvenience error, no specific error number. I do not have QT installed,
not having QT installed is what will be causing your itunes error message at the moment. let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1 install.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)
love, b
