Stacks on dock

Hi everyone
I'm a recent switcher... about 5 weeks ago i got my first macbook pro for school and im pretty used to it already but ive noticed that the folders inside the document stack is disorganized. For example i have an AP subfolder inside the document stacks and when i open the stack to see the contents the files inside are disorganized. I want to organize them by date but i seem not to be able to do this at all. I want the files inside to be organied by date, with the most current file on the top and the oldest one on the bottom. Thanks
I'll show some screenshots of this

  • Change the appearance of a 'saved search stack' in dock

    Hi,
I read a hint on Mac OS X Hints which I particularly like, allowing for a saved search in the dock to behave as a stack showing all recently used documents. See here for the original hint.
The problem I have is that the icon of this stack is a drawer with papers in it. It looks really out of place next to my other stacks, so I would like to customise it. I have changed the icon of the entry in ~/Library/Saved Searches, but that doesn't get reflected in the dock. I have looked at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist, but there is no reference to an icon in there that I could potentially change.
How do I change the appearance of a 'saved search stack' in the dock!?
    thanks,
    Rob

I agree with you that this is not good design and only adds to the confusion of new users, not lessens it.
It also makes more steps for experienced users.
Still it is what it is. Personally I'm sticking with Snow Leopard. After all the anticipation I found Apple has screwed up Lion and it is looking like their version of Vista. A rearrangement of the deckchairs to distract you from the gaping hole in the side of the ship, and that the Shipping Company has decided they are switching to other businesses.
Save a version is Save, and OSX handles all saves using versions you can step back through.
Duplicate is Save as with an extra step inbetween where the file has another name that you need to change. btw also lacks a shortcut. Nice one Apple.
Revert has always been there in OSX and was one of the few improvements in that it consistently lets you go back to your last saved version.

  • "Recent Items" stack in Dock

I typed the required commands into Terminal to create a Recent Items stack in the Dock, which I then limited to recent documents.
One morning when I booted, the Recent Documents stack was missing. I dragged the "empty space" where it had been out of the Dock and tried retyped the Terminal commands to regain the recent items stack:
    first, <defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }’>
and then, when that was not successful, <defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-ad>.
I followed each one with "killall Dock".
All that happened, both times, was the disappearance of ALL my stacks from the Dock.
Am I typing these commands wrong, or what? I also notice that sometimes after typing one into Terminal, my original prompt doesn't reappear but only a < sign.
What should I do to get my recent items stack back?

    Hi,
    1) go to terminal
    2) type in pico
    3) type in the following script (or copy it!)
    !#/bin/bash
    *defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'*
    *killAll Dock*
    4) save file as recents.sh
    5) give it executable rights *chmod u+x recents.sh*
    6) execute it ./recents.sh
    7) keep the file for later use (if you want)

  • No applications stack in dock

How do I get an applications stack in the dock - dragging the folder to the dock doesn't work.

    For a visual, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3739
Notice that near the top of the article is an image of the dock. Item #3 on Apple's diagram is referred to as the "Dock Adjuster". It looks like a dashed line going off into the distance. You can only drop files or folders on the RIGHT side of that "Dock Adjuster" (if you drop a folder it will create a "Stack"). The left side of the "Dock Adjuster" is reserved for applications.
To do this with your "Applications" you just need to open Finder so that you can see the Applications folder. Double-click the hard drive icon on your desktop (probably named "Macintosh HD" unless you renamed it.). In the Finder window, drag the "Applications" folder to the right-side of the "Dock Adjuster" and drop.

  • HT3739 accidentally removed stacks from dock

How do I get it back?

Which stacks? Those are aliases to the original folders, so find the ones you want to restore and drag them onto the Dock.

  • Stacks on Dock problem

Every now and then the stacks on my dock are non-readable. They fan up but the gray bar that extends outhas no words on it telling you the name of the document. Restart solves the problem but I'm curious if there's a solution.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    Hi tsofio,
I saw this posted by macwiz1220 but it was never confirmed that it actually worked.
    This is a variation on it. Locate the file;
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
and drag it to the desktop, and immediately log out and then log back in again.
If that does not work you might have to use Terminal. Here is the original post:

  • Alias folders in stacks on dock

I have a folder in my dock as a stack, and it has alias folders inside it.
When I click on one of the alias folders to view the contents, nothing happens and it doesn't open in finder.

  • I have a new Mac book pro- accidentally removed downloads stack from dock - want to restore it --tried looking for home folder and that didn't work

I accidentally trashed download icon from dock --how do I restore it?

Your Home folder is located in the /Users/ folder. Double-click on the disk icon on your Desktop. Double-click on the Home folder. Select the Downloads folder and drag its icon into the Dock on the right side of the Dock's sizing bar (next to the Trash icon.)

  • 3 "Desktop" icons in Favorites Dock Item...

Anyone know how to remove the extra "Desktop" from the favs list?
    They poped up recently....
PS Only 1 desktop icons is in the finder "places" bar....

Actually I found the list in com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Not sure how they got added there....
    The stack is this one:
    http://www.beyondmac.com/2007/11/22/add-recentfavorite-items-stack-to-dock/
Each time you run the Terminal command in that link, a new favorites folder is added to your Dock. So if you run it again, perhaps because you didn't notice the results the first time, you add a second folder, and so on. That's probably how you ended up with multiple favorites folders in your Dock.

  • Dock folder ion covered by app icon

Today my Applications folder in the doc is covered by the address book icon. It looks like the app folder is still there. I can see the edges peeking out from behind the address book. Address book is the first app in the application list. It has been fine in the past. Several preferences have changed recently but I can't find anything in preferences about how the icons show themselves in the dock. Have I done something to cause this? How do I get it back to the folder only? So far I've tried removing/replacing the icon, changing the view of the folder when open, and restarting.
    Thanks.
    Geoff

Sorry, but that’s not very elegant. Placing an empty folder in there just for the Dock icon’s appearance?!
If you say so. Not particularly intuitive maybe, but not elegant? Please. It depends what icon you have there, an empty folder/application bundle looks no different from any other.
When viewed as a stack the Dock icon will always change and represent the most recent item in the folder.
I'm going to say, no. that's not true, unless my Mac has issues, (and has had since day one), or I have it set up incorrectly.
Now, I'll remove my empty folder. I have mine set up as a stack. I go to the dock and Address Book is the front most icon. I open Safari and place a new folder in the Apps folder called Z so that Address book +cannot be the most recent item+ I relaunch the Finder. Still, Address Book is the front most icon. Or am I reading you wrongly?
When viewed as a folder you will always see the regular folder icon. To change the view right-click on the docked folder and choose your desired view under *View as*.
Yes great, but I don't want to see that folder as my icon, I have drawers instead. Or I could spend money on CandyBar maybe. The method I use is free and it works.

  • FILES STUCK IN STACK HELP

PLACED SEVERAL FILES IN STACK ON DOCK NOW I ONLY SEE A QUESTION  MARK AND NAME
I HAVE SEARCHED FOR the  FILES EVEN IN TIME MACHINE UNABLE TO FIND ANYWHWER HOW DO I ACCESS THESE FILES"

From the way you phrased your post, I get the impression that you were thinking that the items placed on the Dock are actually being moved and stored there. However, the Dock doesn't actually hold any files; rather, shortcuts to the locations of the actual files are created, so that when you click on the shortcuts, the system locates the files where they actually reside and opens them. The question mark indicates that the link between the shortcut on the Dock and the actual file has been broken. Did you delete the original files thinking they were being stored in the Dock?

  • Dock auto-hides, despite preference setting

An odd occurence with my MBP Retina.  Despite the "Automatically hide and show the Dock" preference being UNchecked, my dock still auto-hides, but only when I click on stacks under certain circumstances.  So, this doesn't happen when the stack is set to show as List; only when set to show as Grid or Fan.  Then, when I single-click on a Grid or Fan stack, the dock will always auto-hide after losing focus.  Does anyone else with a MBP Retina have this problem?  I'm using the latest software to date, OS X 10.8.3.

If CT's suggestion didn't work, try resetting the dock.
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn't work.
You need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/ Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Preview Bug?

While setting up desktop / dock items today, I decided to put Preview in a stack on the dock.
I then later tried opening various documents with Preview but found the application to be unresponsive regardless of the type of doc I attempted to open. Preview would launch but would have no display.
When I removed Preview from Stack (on dock), then the application worked again.
I put it back in Stack and it didn't work (again). Have since removed it from Stack and will leave it removed.
Perhaps this is already a known issue, but thought I'd make note in off chance it helps someone trying to troubleshoot Preview app that seems to not be working.

    Joel,
We have reported the 'answered' issue you mentioned below. It is an annoying thing.
We are working on updating the help documentation and hoping to re-introduce a 'Rich Text Editor' in the future.
    Thank you for your feedback.
    Kind regards,

  • Layout in PSE 11 (swedish)

    I recently upgraded from PSE9.
When I was working with three or more photos and wanted to compare two of them, side by side, it functioned.
When I want to do the same in PSE11 it does not. I want to compare the two car photos but all three are shown. (See dump)
    What have I missed?

This is something that I would do.
First go to preferences and check "allow floating documents in the Expert mode" and "enable floating document window docking"
Change my layout to "Default" so that all my images are stacked together
Drag one of the photos I want to compare out of the stack
Try docking the image to the left hand side of the document window, just at the right end of the tool bar
Select the second image from the stack so that both my images to compare are visible side by side

  • I dislike leopard

I dislike leopard (over tiger) because:
    - Front Row without Air Tunes (they just removed this function)
    - Booting with caps lock and num lock on (1:50 boots)
    - Epson printer not longer working with airport express (errors I do not understand)
    - Stacks in dock look like **** (there are some nice solutions)
I forgot a few downsides, probebly.
Today I tried Vista. After that I am still happy with my mac Leopard!
    Kodjo

Like anything it takes time to get the hand of it.
It is a pretty good system, just as good as Tiger with some nice other things.
