Stacks using Mac OS 10.4

Hey,
I've organized my apps into folders that ive then put on my dock to create a similar effect that stacks do in 10.5...to get into the folder without actually opening it i just hold down control key and click to open it like a stack.
wondering if there is a way of doing this so I don't have to hold down control and click. Obviously upgrading to 10.5 would do it but i dont have the money right now.

I havent created icons for the folders but i think you go to file>get info on a folder you can drag a picture into folder icon that comes up...from my experience they dont look all that good but im not so good at the photo editing thing, you might have more luck.
If you do make icons, I'd love to see them

I think FileVault is used to encryp internal hard drive but I wanna encrypt an external hard drive with Mac OS Extended Journaled Encrypted which is completely different!

If by "Mac Dictate", you mean the built in speech-to-text feature, no, you can't use that to convert a voice memo, at least not easily. Speech-to-text is designed to work on live speech, not recordings. But, there's no harm in trying.

I to use iphoto library manager to save corrupted iphoto and each time it saves some and the first time it brings up iphoto, iphone goes into "not responding" mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2.

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding." Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.

Deskjet 3050 J610 Wireless Setup Problem - Thinks I'm using MAC filtering

I just got an HP Deskjet 3050 J610 from my parents, who have never used it. The ink cartridges were still in their wrappers. Trying to set it up tonight, and everything was going well until I tried connecting it to the wireless network.
My router does not have WPS, so I'm having to do this via USB. The software is able to detect my router's SSID, encryption type, and password. However, when trying to connect the printer to the router, it fails. The Wireless Network Test Report claims that it might be because of MAC address filtering. I double checked my router settings, and I am NOT using MAC filtering at all. I have not yet tried rebooting everything (Printer, laptop, router), but I am doubtful that will resolve the issue. For security reasons, I would prefer not to say what security I'm using, but I will say that it IS supported by the printer.
I'm using Windows 7 on an Asus laptop, and my ISP is Verizon Fios.

Hi Manjunath, I spent the last hour on that site. Everything I found was about how to add the printer's MAC address to the router's filter settings. But I repeat, I am NOT using MAC filtering on my router, but the printer thinks I am.
Or rather... THOUGHT I was.
Rebooting the printer and the router helped. Of course, I did both at the same time, so I'm not sure which one was required, or both, but the long and the short of it is, it works now.

I downloaded an upgrade but when I try to put it in the applications, it says the file is locked. when I unlock it, it still doesn't let me drag it, and reverts back to being locked when I close the window. I am using Mac Lion.

I opened Firefox this morning and it told me I needed to download a newer version. I downloaded the new version. I got the image prompting me to drag Firefox to the applications folder. When I do that, it asks if I want to replace the old Firefox, I click 'yes' and enter my password. It tells me the file is locked. I open 'get info', unlock the file and enter my password. It claims I have read and write access privileges. I then try again to drag Firefox to the applications folder - it says the same thing about the file being locked. I check again under 'get info', and Firefox has reverted to being locked again. I unlock it again and without closing that window, i.e. when it is still showing unlocked, I try again to drag it. Same message.
Now I can't use Firefox at all because it has corrupted the old version I was using and I am unable to download the new one.
I am using Mac OS 10.7.2, Lion, on a MacBook Pro.

There's almost certainly a way to accomplish what you want to do (probably best from the terminal possibly copying the entire user dir and fixing up permissions, etc.) but I'm not sure you will end up with the results you want. There are plists in the preferences dir that you probably don't want to copy over (e.g., many of the com.apple.* prefererences). And many apps also create more than just plists. There may be stuff in Application Support, LaunchAgents, Internet Plug-Ins, etc.). And this would be stuff you do want to copy. Bottom line is it is not a trivial exercise which is probably why the system is slapping your hands for even attempting it

It is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
◼ Password protection
◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Hit counter
◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

Just unpacked Mac mini and powered up using Mac mini to VGA display adaptor and VGA monitor. There is no signal to the monitor ( power is on).
How to see the display?

First step would be to create the necessary entries (easier to make a complete xorg.conf versus xorg.conf.d/##-whatever.conf).
All Desktop Environments / Window Managers rely on X. Man pages are helpful, possibly some headaches ahead as I fought a dual-monitor display this way.

Chinese input using mac trackpad is not working in firefox 18

i was trying to use my mac trackpad to input chinese on the web page and found out it is not working ... i switched to use firefox recently from safari which is working fine with input chinese using mac trackpad ... i am using version 18 and search the support and found out it worked in firefox 16 and not working in version 17 & 18 ... to my surprise that how could it worked in version 16 and not working in version 17 & 18 ... how could you removed the function away with the updated version? ... i thought you will have more efforts to improve the functions rather to remove functions in an open source programming approach ... i do not know if there is any person responsible to put this function back to firefox in the coming update?...
can any person provide any comment on this issue? ... i hope this could be resolved asap...

in firefox 18, there is NO options tab under tools tab...
in firefox 18, under tools tab, there are only web search, downloads, add-ons, set up sync, web developer, page info, start private browsing, clear recent history, adblock plus...
i have searched around and could not find the option for "Use hardware acceleration when available"...
please advise...

Select the .dmg file and double-click it. FWIW, there's no DiskImage thing in Utilities on any of my boot volumes.

Iphone will sync with one and only one cpomptuer at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content and replace with content from the new computer. This is the design of the iphone.
It will erase the content when you sync.
Why not update from the comptuer with which you normally sync?

Are they Smart Folders? Smart Folders don't actually hold e-mail messages, but reflect what is filed elsewhere.
