Staggering or pausing for less than a second

Every time I restart Firefox after 15-30m, it starts staggering or freezing every 3 seconds for a half second or so. For example, when I'm bringing down the drag down bar it pauses every 3 seconds or the same thing when I'm highlighting passages. It also affects videos and typing. I've tried reinstalling Firefox completely but the problem came back shortly. The other applications on my laptop aren't having this issue.

Hi j032, I'm not sure what changed. Some users have reported that Firefox 24 used a lot more memory when a lot of tabs were open (e.g., over 100). If you starting having this issue in Firefox 24, maybe it is related to overall memory usage?

After I upgraded to Mountain Lion, occasionally a warning screen with the yellow '!' pops up for less than a second then goes away. What does trhis mean, does anyone else have this problem?

Never seen it - never heard of it. Does it popup while you're using any particular application? Is it like a dialog box? It could be some third-party application trying to warn you... about something.

After the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 update When I go to use Preview to view a photo it shows up for less than a second then disappears and just leaves a gray box where the photo should be. iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014). I need Preview for work.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

Is it possible to play a slide for less than 1 second in iPhoto?

No.
You'll need a Video Editor like iMovie or Final Cut for that.

• Weird one of those "allow" pop-up for less than a second, keeps coming up periodically....what is this?!

I am getting a weird pop up, it happens after i log in and then periodically as i am on my computer. Not at any time in particular, happens as I am surfing the web or using applications like iphoto. Its one of the pop ups that would come up to allow something, but its only up for maybe half a second, i can just make out the yellow caution sign that shows up on the allow pop ups for things. I tried downloading a virus software for mac and checking for viruses but couldnt find any. A bit stumped as to what this could be?
Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated.

Yes it occurs when I am not using a browser, although I am not sure entirely if safari was quit or not however it has occured even when I don't have one open
I only have the one account, I just put the login on because I won't be using my computer all summer. So other than the guest account there is just my main one, and from what I remember it began happening before I did this
I have not tried booting in safe mode...although it would be hard to tell because I never know when it is going to pop up

Firefox crashed without even opening the main window - just the apology pop-up appeared. Nothing I could do would open the programme. MS Fixit identified a problem with IE8 and put it down to AVG8 Link Scanner. I disabled this, and tried Firefox again. It worked perfectly for a time. Later, when trying to open Firefox, nothing happened - no crash pop-up, no navegation window - zilch. I tried to re-install the programme, but as soon as I execute it, the "Extracting" pop-up opens then closes immediately. I tried to uninstall Firefox using the Windows control panel, but this did not work - Error 21, whatever that is, then tried to reinstall again with the same result. The Firefox uninstall did work. I unistalled my AVG8 anti-vir and tried again - nothing. I downloaded an older version of Firefox - same result. Something is blocking any activity concerning Firefox and I am totally at a loss to identify it. Can anyone help, please?

• Screen Saver lasts less than a second (Wireless USB Mouse)

When I put my pointer in the hot corner (lower left), the screensaver activates for less than a second, then goes off as if I've moved the mouse or pressed a key.  The pointer disappears, then reappears immediately in the corner before the screensaver goes off, so that makes me think the computer is thinking that the mouse is moving (which it is not) and thus turns off the screensaver.
I recently updated to Mavericks with the exact same mouse I was using before, which is a Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000 with Intellipoint installed.  The only way to switch off the mouse would be to disconnect the USB or remove the batteries from the mouse.

The problem is no longer there.  Repairing permissions may have been the solution, but I'm not sure because I tried a lot of things.

Hi Kim Sharp,
According to your description that when you view the report it is extremely slow in SSRS 2008 R2 but it is very fast when execute the query in dataset designer, right?
I have tested on my local environment and can‘t reproduce the issue. Obviously, it is the performance issue, rendering performance can be affected by a combination of factors that include hardware, number of concurrent users accessing reports, the amount
of data in a report, design of the report, and output format. If you have parameters in your report which contains many values in the list, the bad performance as you mentioned is an known issue on 2008 R2 and already have the hotfix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2276203
Any issue after applying the update, I recommend you that submit a feedback at https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/
If you don’t have, you can do some action to improve the performance when designing the report. Because how you create and update reports affects how fast the report renders.
Actually, the Report Server ExecutionLog2  view contains reports performance data. You could make use of below query to see where the report processing time is being spent:
After you determine whether the delay time is in data retrieval, report processing, or report rendering:
use ReportServer
SELECT TOP 10 ReportPath,parameters,
TimeDataRetrieval + TimeProcessing + TimeRendering as [total time],
TimeDataRetrieval, TimeProcessing, TimeRendering,
ByteCount, [RowCount],Source, AdditionalInfo
FROM ExecutionLog2
ORDER BY Timestart DESC
Use below methods to help troubleshoot issues according to the above query result :

I just downloaded the trial of Photoshop.  Every time I try to open it, it comes up with an error message and closes less than 5 seconds into being opened.  Does anyone know how I can fix this?  I tried rebooting my computer and reinstalling photoshop.  Thank you!

i7 is quite fast. that's what i am on too. You may need to
It would be necessary that you have to use "Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool". (see Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6 )
The order varies depending on your individual needs:
1. Maybe you have to activate/deactivate, so please have a look there:
http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html
2. Sometimes, we know in the meantime, the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
3. Did you already try "uninstalling and re-installing"? Be careful with (de)installing aso. by (de)installing by your own resources. As much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
4. If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html or http://helpx.adobe.com/de/contact.html or
Det finns också ett svenskt språkiga chatt. http://helpx.adobe.com/se/contact.html and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences. I quote from Adobe's employee Preran: The chat button is activated as soon as there is an agent available to help.

• Skipping track after less than 1 second

I have downloaded iOS7, and I tried to delete some track from iTunes that I never listen to. Somehow, several of the songs on my iPhone have now started to skip onto the next track after less than a second of playing. I can still play the songs from iTunes on my PC, so I seem to have done something with the phone and I don't know what! I changed the settings from 'Phone' to 'Library' in the 'shared' music menu - I think that's what caused the problem, as now it seems fine having just changed it back. It's so frustrating that you can't get rid of music you don't want on your phone! There must be a way of doing it without shelling out for Match.

Do you have a circle with a red square next to some of your songs in your music app on your phone?

• Changing web server refresh to less than one second

I just set up another PC on our network to display our engine test VI.  Is there any way to increase the refresh rate to less than one second.  I tried entering .5 sec on the config screen, but it changed back to one second.  I'm using LabVIEW 8.5.1.

Thanks again.  I'll try that.
BTW, I just spoke with out rep from Daytronic Corp. who was testing the comm cards with his System 10 and PC.  They worked fine for him.  The only difference is that he is using LabVIEW 7.0 and we are using 8.5.1.  They don't have any subVIs written for the newer LV versions.  That may be the cause the the issue we're having with using the comm cards to access the DAQ.  They do not have the time or money to update their subVIs for the newer LV versions, but I'd have to think that there is a way to change them myself to make them work.  Ideally, I want to use a modified version of the app I'm using on another PC without having to bother with the network to pass the data.  I already have a cable made to connect the other PC to the System 10.
I almost forgot something.... I found a version 8 System 10 subVI package using the NI search, but it didn't work either.
Do you know what might have changed in the newer LV versions that could cause this issue?  I've attached a zip file of their subVIs.  Like I mentioned earlier, LV works fine using the main (built-in) comm port on the System 10 DAQ.  It's just the additional cards that do not work correctly.  They seem to establish the comm link OK, but the binary data that the System 10 sends is not interpreted and displayed correctly.  It's usually all gibberish on the screen.
Of the Daytronic subVIs, the subVI that I use to test with is the "example.vi", which is used for binary data.
The "simple terminal" subVI works fine, but I can't use it to test the data link since it's configured differently.
When I use the main System 10 comm port, the simple terminal doens't work and the example.vi does.  Why wouldn't it work with the other ports/cards?
Could you please check these out when you have the time and see if you can find something that isn't configured correctly?  I may be overlooking something obvious, since I'm still learning LV.
Thanks

• SSRS report is consuming much more time to fetch data from DB even direct run SP takes less than a second

Hi,
we are using SQL SERVER 2008R2 X64 RTM version.
One of the SSRS report designed by developer  is  consuming  much more time( 5 to 6 minutes ) to fetch data from DB. Even direct run of  Stored Procedure (Called in report )takes less than a second to display the result set.
Please help.
Regards Naveen MSSQL DBA

Hi Naveen,
Based on my understanding, you spend a little time retrieving data with a stored procedure from database in dataset designer. However, it takes long time to run the report to display the data, right?
In Reporting Services, the total time to generate a report include TimeDataRetreval, TimeProcessing and TimeRendering. In your scenario, since you mentioned retrieving data costs a little time, you should check the table
Executionlog3 in the ReportServer database to find which section costs most of time, TimeProcessing or TimeRendering. Then you can refer to this article to optimize your report:
Troubleshooting Reports: Report Performance.
Besides, if parameters exist in the report, you should declare variables inside of the stored procedure and assign the incoming parameters to the variables. For more information, please refer to the similar thread:
Fast query runs slow in SSRS.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

• Firefox Crashes in less than 5 seconds after opening it, randomly.

Here's my problem.
When I load firefox, 3 to 4 times in a row it will open, and then simply vanish in less than 5 seconds. Then the next time I try to open it - It works. WTF?
It won't even give me a Crash screen, It just vanishes.
Sometimes even, It just hangs at the homepage, to which I have to C.A.D. it.
This is happening all the time and its really getting annoying. I open a page, it crashes, repeat, repeat, repeat, and then success.
I am running a freshly installed Windows XP home 32bit, with all drivers and updates installed, blah blah blah...
Using Firefox 4.0.1
Things i have tried:
Opening multiple Firefox windows at once from the desktop, and regardless of how many, it crashes.
Changed my home page to alternative sites ( Google, Youtube, Hotmail etc.)
Made sure firfox was up to date, including all add-ons.
Tried disabling addons
Tried running firefox in safemode.
Tried running firefox in safemode, with add-ons disabled.
Re-installing firefox, with and without updates.
Tried it on a friends computer, clean install without add-ons and it worked.
Hitting my computer ( lol, j/k )
Im quite fed up with this. I've never had this problem with any versions previous to 4. Yes, that means V4 did this to me as well.
The times I can get Firefox started, I have no problems at all, Its smooth sailing.
Everything else on my computer works great, so I'm sure it is just firefox.
Anyone have any ideas?

Firefox is likely to be hanging rather than crashing, which explains why you get no crash reports.
The problem is likely to reside in your profile which is why reinstalls and safe mode do not help, but using a friends computer's Firefox works.<br/>(using a new clean profile would also be expected to work but may not be the simplest thing for you to do<br/> - and you could loose access to some data)
The "CAD" approach in XP will start task Manager that may be used to kill the process that is a one off solution to Firefox is already running but is not responding you will need to follow up to figure out why it is hanging repeatedly.
Follow the links I have posted, and further links in those articles if necessary, the articles should explain the problem and how to resolve it better that I could. Post back with how you get on.
If it turns out it is crashing you will need to look at Firefox crashes and follow up for a crash signature.
Good luck.

• Less than a second of audio on 2 of my audiobooks

Before I left on vacation, I added 3 audiobooks to my IPod. I listened to and finished one of the audiobooks on the trip but when I went to start the next one, I only got less than a second of audio and the counter was stuck at 10 seconds. The same thing happened with the other audiobook. I tried to restart my IPod but that didn't work. When I got home I checked the audiobooks and both of them started up as if nothing happened. I don't know what to do.
