Staircase edges on DV video

Just a quick question...whenever I import DV video into Motion, the quality is not quite as good, and the edges on curved sections in the video are "staircased", but the same video in FCP looks great. I have tried changing almost every setting in Motion with no luck. Any thoughts?

Actually, I have the video going out to a tv monitor, where it has the staircase edges as well. The video itself is not interlaced either...it was shot with a Panasonic DVX100B in progressive mode 23.98fps. I actually even did try to change the field order between Lower and Upper, while toggling the Field Rendering button on and off. Turning on Lower fields with field rendering solved the problem with the video, but added interlacing to all my moving graphics which looked terrible. I can't find a good solution.

One way to to put the videos into an iDVD slideshow
and set iDVD's Slideshow preferences to always scale slides to TV Safe Area.
However, some users have reported that the audio quality using this method is lessened.  I've not noticed it but then I don't have a good ear when it comes to that sort of thing. If you add more than one video in the same slideshow do not select any transition.

  • Jagged Verticle Edges in active Video

What can cause jagged verticle edges in moving video. I noticle the edge distortion in a high contrast verticle edge in active moving video. Is this due to a video compression setting or is it the nature of this program's ability to handle a complex scene due to it's sampling rate?

Here's a link to the screen shot showing the jagged vertical lines/ banding in a the uprights of a window frame.

  • Feather Edges of a Video Clip in a Motion Project?

Is there a way to feather the edges of a video clip used in a motion project?
(That is, feathering in the sense of making it gradually more transparent as you approach the edge of the rectangular image frame.)

you create a feathered mask by, first creating a mask with the mask tool, and then adjusting its feathering parameter to taste. You create regular shaped masks or more complicated ones if you use the bezier mask tool.
of course thinking about it now, if each layer is scaling and animating separately, simply masking the group may not work. You may need to set the anchor points of each layer say to the left hand side, that way they will scale out the other side and not evenly around the anchor point. it may be easier to lock down the sides you want to match.

  • Do the edges of a video get cut-off when added to an iMovie project?

When I view a video clip from the events library it fits in the viewer screen perfectly, i.e., the entire image appears on the screen.  After adding the video clip to my project, when I play the video from the project, the edges appear to have been cut-off, i.e., my giraffe has no head.  Do I need to resize the original video file? How?

Thanks for the idea.  I found a solution to my problem in another discussion between KimsAZmac and AppleMan1958.  If you use stabilization the image is made larger so it doesn't fit in the viewer.  The solution is to turn off stabilization or use the slider on clip adjustments so the image fits the screen.
    Problem solved.

  • Noise In Edges of Title (video/motion graphics)

Anyone have tips on an approach to reduce Noise In the Edges of a Title?
    Here is the title:
    http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/7535/textpw2.jpg
Its really just a "cut out" with a stroke that then overlays a flashy and colorful video in an NLE.
It looks OK but by the time its rendered down to MPEG the edges get too crunchy.
    Any tips would be great...

    Its MPEG2 (.m2v) destination = SD DVD.
    max 9,500,000
    average 6,000,000
    min 192,000
regardless, i still believe that someone on the level of an interface designer could make a much more compelling "overlay" that uses advanced "glass look" transparency techniques and so on rather than a simple and fairly lame stroke.
as well, AE or other nle/text generators never have the control for the best titles....
that why i was asking in PS forum....i know what i dont know..kind of frustrating....

Im having a problem with the dvd quality, I'm using compressor to convert the video fils from apple prores to mpeg2 .It doesn't matter how long my video is even if its just 5 minutes  I'm getting cut edges/lines  in the video specialy if i have titles it comes up really bad , I took the same video to a friend of mine who have PC and he uses Encore , did the encoding there and it was just fine no problems! BTW I tried using doferent setings in compressor from CBR and VBR I even pushed up the setings to 8 or 9 BR and still no luck !
does anyone have any idea ?
    Thanks in advence ...

Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
After rendering, export QT self contained.
Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
Submit burn and check quality on TV.
    Good luck.

  • Blurred edges ("dream" like video)

I'm editing a wedding video and the client wants a lot of the video to have the (somewhat) cheesy sepia tone, slo mo, blurred edges-- almost like the subject in the video is glowing... kind of reminds me of dream sequences seen on TV shows and movies. I can't figure out how to get that blurred/ dream-like look. Can anybody help?

Do a google search for free Final Cut plugins. I'm pretty sure someone has a free glow or bloom or silk stocking filter. Eurkera had one at one time. There are probably others.

  • Motion Tracking - Match Move, getting messy edges around superimposed video

    (Motion 3.0.2)
I'm using the "Match Motion" menu option under "Motion Tracking" - "Add Behavior" to superimpose a video over a flat screen in the shot. This is working great except for one issue. Around the edges of the super imposed video there is a flickering light that persists. NOTE: The flat screen does display a basic white graphic on it and initially it seemed as though this was leaking through. However, I'm not convinced this is the case as I've stretched the four corners well beyond the underlying white screen and the problem persists.
Pretty sure I went through the proper steps, i.e analyze etc. and the superimposed video does play fine, just the edges are not very clean.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks, I did set the "Render" to "Best", hit Analyze again, saved the file, went back to my FCP project which contained the file/clip, had to render again.....but got the same results, might be a touch improved, can't really tell. Maybe I'll start over and just cover the entire flat screen tv w/ the video to ensure that none of the white image from the tv seeps around the edges??

  • Black title screen not large enough to cover video: see edges of underlying video

    Hello users,
I am trying to use black title screens to display names of songs which are to appear for 5 seconds before fading and then showing the performer.
I have the title screen on the track 2, above the video on track 1.
I can see a very slight but noticable edge of the video all around the title screen. I see this on my Sony pro production monitor and on my Plasma TV.
How can I eliminate that? I thiought I could just enlarge the title screen but I see no way to do that.
    Insights appreciated!
I'm on CS 6.03 and Windows.
    wsmith

I see now, the little window that pops when doing "new, title" let's you specify the title size. Why can't we just be able to change that in the properties at the right? What if you have already created a slew of titles?

  • Jagged edges when viewing video

    Hello all,
let's see if I'm able to describe this problem adequately.
I have taken short video clips with, now two different camera (AVCHD used), imported into iPhoto and viewed within. During playback there are severe jagged blocks mostly around the outlines of moving subjects. If the subject stops moving this effect disappears but resumes as soon there once again is movement. This isn't even subtle, the videos are quite unwatchable.
What I have tried is export those videos out of iPhoto and opened them with QT. There was no such problem and the video was smooth throughout.
I don't quite understand what is happening here.
    Cheers Argento

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
If it doesn't try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • Deinterlaced output creates noise on edges of video

I have a project that is to be distributed as a movie file on Flash thumb drives so I've been futzing with deinterlacing in Compressor.
I have ProRes interlaced source from client and I've created a Compressor setting of ProRes Progressive with Best (motion compensated) deinterlacing, Adaptive Details checked, anti-alias 7 and details level 7 and resize to 640 x 480.
This setting produced very good looking deinterlacing, but on the edges of the video is garbage that jumps around. It looks like purple snow stuff.
    Any tips?
    Thanks!
    Scot

Unless you are UP-scaling your video, you want to leave adaptive details unchecked and keep anti-alias/details at Zero. These options are not related to deinterlacing - only scaling.
Hard to say but I would guess it's the adaptive detail setting that's creating the noise.
If you still get noise, you might try cranking out an uncompressed, same-as-source file out of After Effects and then compress that. Seems silly, but I've found that simply "re-wrapping" a file as an uncompressed quicktime will bypass whatever is confusing the compression software. The file will be ginormous and it's a bit of a workaround...but ifitworksitworks amirite?

  • Creation of Projects in 4:3 Ratio Truncates Edges of Video

I recently used a Miglia DV converter to pull some video that is in 4:3 aspect ratio into iMovie 8. The default setting in iMovie preferences and in the project specifics was 16:9, so I reset them to 4:3. I have since noticed that when the project is played, the horizontal edges of the video have been trimmed away - for exapmple, in the intro to one of the projects, the word 'Battlefield' displays as 'attlefiel'. In the clips, there is no truncation, but the video displays in 16:9 and so it appears stretched.
How do I ensure that(a) the original aspect ration is imported, and (b) that I avoid trucated edges described above?

I installed iMovie 6 on the MacBook and cannot seem to get it to avoid stretching images. I then reverted to using iMovie 6 on the G4 Mini and again, no problems. I recorded both 3:4 and widescreen shows and all cam out as desired. I have not as of yet tried installing iMovie 8 on the Mini, but I feel like the laptop is the root cause, since it's the only item that differs when iMovie 6 is used.

  • Blurring "censor" effect fails at all edges of video

I have been using the Track Matte Key effect in combination with the titler to create a "blur" effect to blur out faces and expletive words on videos I've been producing. It creates the same type of effect you see on episodes of Cops where peoples' faces are blurred, and allows for you to control the movement of the blur to stay on the person's face/word/other censored object as it moves in a video.
There's only one problem I seem to be encountering with this effect. If the object requiring censorship extends to either of the 4 sides of the video (i.e. in a camera pan of the object), the blur effect fades away just near the edges, allowing the censored object to be briefly seen as it passed by the very edges of the video.
Here's an example of my work, where I've censored a derogatory term associated with homosexuals on an ABC News report:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50r0CnKq7_k
Thanks to everyone for any assistance. If anyone is interested in how to apply this effect and wants be to provide them with detailed instructions on how to make this effect work, let me know.
    Sincerely,
    Jehdroin

    Hi,
I had that problem too....where the blur fails at the edges of the frame....was very annoying...
It seems to happen when the mask is created in the title window...but not if you create the mask in photoshop....
    try this maybe ...
get your first mask made in the title window for your first frame of video that's going to use the mask...
That will give you the size and location of the mask for your first frame...
Put that mask on your timeline....and put CTI over it and " export - frame "....to location that you like ( desktop, whatever )
    Open it in photoshop....
Now...because this mask is gonna move ( position ) you might want to use the "canvas" size adjustment to make your mask larger....so you don't run out of black.....the mask is going to be pure white to be transparent and the rest will be pure black for opaque...you make it what you want with gaussian blur etc...you know...adjust the thing so it works the way you want...
Save the file as PSD when you've finished and import the PSD file to NLE and clear the mask made in the title window...and use the psd file instead....
    This should solve the problem...
I don't know why the title thing does that but suspect it has something to do with the " safety "   ( tv safe , for titles ...you know ? )....

  • Horizontal lines across video in Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0

I had used a software called Virtualdub to deinterlace and remove lots of garbage from the edges of a video. I had also used a software called Neat Video inside of Virtualdub to remove a lot of grains from my vhs video.   I prefer to use Adobe Premiere because it's superior to Virtualdub when it comes to color correction.   That is my own opinion, however,  I imported the video from Virtualdub into Adobe Premiere.  I did some color corrections on my vhs video.  The video looks a whole better than the original.  I saved the video with the color correction and exported it as an avi file.  I exported the same video into Pinnacle to burn on a dvd.  I noticed that the video had a lot of  fine horizontal lines going across it.  I would like to know what am I doing wrong with all of  these procedures.  I'm a beginner trying to learn how to use Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0. for video editing.  I would like to use this software totally to edit my video instead of using Pinnacle software. I hope that my problem isn't too complicated.  Thanks.
    Gerald Sr.

You can do everything in Premiere: you do not need VD or Pinnacle.
First of all I would not deinterlace nor get rid of the edge gargage of the original footage in VD.
Depending on how the deinterlacing is being done, it still will bring down the quality off the footage.
If its for dvd on a standalone player just leave it interlaced.
Edge garbage is easily removed in Pro2 by scaling up the footage a tiny bit.
I would only use Neat Video in VD and export the footage to avi with the Lagarith codec which will give you a lossless file.
    http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html
Or skip VD and get Neat Video as a plugin for Premiere
In Premiere you can create dvd's and besides it has a much better mpeg2 encoder then Studio has.
This is a good site for learning Premiere Pro2:
