Stalling during power on

I work at a school and have been updating our macbook pro lab, some of them now are basically stalling during startup. it only loads half way. i've done internet recovery, checked the hard drive it says 'updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. I'm not sure where to go from here

Hello marissa_erickson,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that some of the computers in the computer lab are not starting up as expected. You have also completed some good troubleshooting already. In this situation, I would recommend a few more steps. Please follow the outlined steps in the attached article to help isolate and resolve this issue.

  • My Apple TV stalled during an update and now just shows an image of it being plugged into a USB. It won't complete the update and does nothing when I plug it into my Mac via USB.

2 Apple TVs. The first won't reboot, it stalled during an update and now shows a picture of a UBS plug. Ive tried to plug into my computer, nothing happens. At a standtill.
The second Apple TV works but only if I send something via Airplay. The remote no longer has any affect. The light on the front of the Apple TV blinks when I push a buttom on the remote but nothing happens.
Any Ideas? I am starting to think I need to replace them. Thanks.

Ok, with itunes open on the pc, plug one end of the usb cord into the computer, but not connected to the ipad.
now, press the power button on the ipad until it turns off.
Then, press and hold the home button on the ipad at the same you plug the usb cord into the ipad. DON'T LET GO OF THE HOME BUTTON.
Keep holding the home button until you see the recovery mode message pop on the itunes window.
When that happens, you should now be able to restore.

  • IOS Update stalled during install...should I reboot?

Doing a required update to the software on my mac mini (so I could then update the ios on my iphone4s)  seems that the update stalled during the 'installing files' step.  Should I power off and try again?  Help...

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • My apple tv stalls during playback. How can I fix this?

My Apple TV stalls during playback. I am hooked up through ethernet so I'm certain that it is not a network issue. What happens is that after a few minutes of normal playback the movie that I'm watching simply stalls. It looks like AppleTV is trying to reboot it. if I rewind it briefly and restart the movie by pushing play it seems to be fine. But it it stalls again after a few minutes. I have to do this very often and it becomes quite distracting when you're trying to watch a show.
One thing I have noticed is that if I pause the program before it stalls and leave it for about 15 minutes I can watch a large portion of the show uninterrupted.
The files are in my iTunes library. I don't seem to have this issue if I'm playing the files from my iPad via AirPlay. I have restarted, reset, and rebooted AppleTV several times and it still keeps doing it. Any suggestions out there?

    640 x 480
    Widescreen 16:9
These settings are contradictory. Please post a screen capture image of the QT "Inspector" window to confirm what encode matrix setting, PAR display setting, and Scale display settings are actually embedded in your file. Also please confirm whether or not the source material was widescreen and it is 4:3 aspect you wish to correct at this point. If not, then please state the height at which the transcoded file was encoded and the target aspect ratio at which you want files to play in all media players.
Once compressed it plays back in Windows Media Player as 16:9 video.
When played back with Quicktime it is squished into a 4:3 format.
Different players dispay content aspect differently.
Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
QT 7, for instance, displays the file using specific Scale dimensions and if these dimensions are not equivalent to PAR/anamorphic playback settings, then the file can display differently in differently media players. As to fixing the problem, that depends on which setting you are trying to fix and what platform/software is available.

  • Why does iMac 2007 keep going off during power up?

I've tried starting up several times, including in safe mode.  The bar gets about ¼ way along, then everything shuts off, again.
No idea where my original disc is, but the DVD player hadn't worked for a few weeks now either.
Not sure what to do.  A similar thing happened a few years ago when the screen would just go gray and freeze on start up, and the machine had to be sent away to be repaired.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

Managed to get it going agin by doing a restore from my backup. Had to do the <Command, R> during power on, and do it from there.  Hopefully it will be ok now.

  • Time Capsule internet stall during backups

Just started to happen recently but it looks like everytime the backup starts, my internet connection begins to stall. As soon as the backup is complete, my internet is working again. It's not like the backups are large sizes, not sure what's going on. The TC had been working great for the past 6 months and this just started to happen the last couple weeks. Other than no internet during backups, it works well. Any ideas?

I am running it via wireless. Typically the RSSI is around 70, this last time when the internet stalled during backup the RSSI was down in the 54 range. I know there have been backups hourly or so but when my internet stalled just a few minutes ago, it was the first time since I posted the first msg in this thread. I still haven't figured out anything common for when it does stall during backups.
You'll notice that the value for RSSI is a negative number, so the larger the absolute value, the worse the connection. I also see an RSSI value of -70. My wireless network performance is so poor at that value that I use an Ethernet connection instead.
Even if the noise on your link is as low as -90, that only gives you a signal-to-noise ratio of 20 (-70 minus -90), which according to the second message of this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10329543
qualifies as a "low signal". If the noise on your link is higher (a smaller absolute value), then the SNR value will be worse and your throughput will suffer accordingly.

  • My iPad Air stalled during an update and I cannot restart my device even after pressing the on/off button for 15 seconds. Any suggestions?

My iPad Air stalled during an update and will not restart even after pressing the on/off button for 15 seconds. Any suggestions?

Have you tried a soft-reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear and it should reboot.

  • IMac stalls during installation

I have a 17" iMac G5 that just recently started stalling during installation. The computer acts as if it is loading up the OS, but takes forever - somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 minutes. It has in fact eventually made it to the desktop. However, once you restart, it's back to doing the same thing.
I tried starting up from the MAC OS CD by holding down the "C" key, and now the computer just sits, and the icon spins and it has my CD in there.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and what did you do about it? Also, how do I now eject the CD from the computer?

    1. What were you installing? Be very clear.
    2. Where did you get the OS X installer disk? Is it a retail version of 10.4?

  • Macbook pro stalls during startup

My macbook pro with Yosemite stalls during startup.  I've tried Command R and ran disk utility.  The disk is ok.  I've zapped the RAM but it still stalls about 25% of the way through the startup process.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How to see the last updates made during Power Nap?

    Hello guys,
I am using MacBook Pro with Retina Display with Power Nap turned on. I think it's a great feature, but I wouyld like more control — to be able to see the updates it has made while sleeping.
Is there any way to see the last updates made during Power Nap? Maybe some logs etc.

You can see updates installed via Software Update by clicking on the Apple > About this Mac > more info > System Report > scroll down to Software > Installations. That is a comprehensive list - you won't find a separate list of the last hour or whatever (that I know of). There might be a terminal command for that - or not - I don't know of one.
FWIW, I like to know what updates are being installed when, so I do not allow automatic download/installs of anything - I allow automatic checking so I get a notification that an update is available, but then I prefer to choose if/when I will download and install.

  • Quicktime X stalls during export of .avi to iTunes

I have been trying to add several avi files to my iTunes library in order to stream them to my AppleTV using Airplay. However, when I use Quicktime to export them, in stalls during the export. A video file does appear in my iTunes library and the video quality is perfect, but there is no audio, although the original avi file has audio when played with Quicktime. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I have been trying to add several avi files to my iTunes library in order to stream them to my AppleTV using Airplay.
Since AVI is a file container, this does not tell us what specific compression formats are at play here. I suspect it is either a multiplexed form of audio and video or MPeG-1, layer 3 or AC3 and you either lack a lack a required codec or have some sort of a component conflict. You can try any of the following and see if it helps:
    1) Try using MPEG Streamclip for your conversion (i.e., if the content is multiplexed or contains AC3 elementary audio).
    2) Save the AVI data to an MOV file container, add it to iTunes and see if iTunes can make the conversion (i.e., if the audio is MP3).
    3) Check the inspector window and post back with specific codec information.

  • Mac stalls during startup

My PowerBook currently stalls during startup (a dark grey apple on a light grey bground with a circling sun). I have tried holding down the C key as my Mac starts up and then clicking the hard disk icon and then the right arrow (my Mac just stalls on the grey apple again once I've done this). I have also tried Disk Utility and the Apple Hardware Test. Neither identifies any errors, except when I try to Repair disk permissions Disk Utility reports an Internal Error - 'Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue'. I have tried restarting the process many times but I always get this same message.
The problem began when I attempted to export a QuickTime movie in QT Pro as an MPEG-4. I attempted to resave the MPEG-4 as a QT movie afterwards. QT then created a gastronomically huge .mov file when I attempted to do this. A file in the region of 32GB! (It should have been less than 1MB). My computer crashed after it told me my hard disk was almost full (there is now only 2.7GB free). This has happened to me before but normally what I can do is restart my Mac and then delete the offending .mov file, however this time I can't even get into my Mac to do this.
I don't want to format my hard disk as I did this only last week after a problem with OS Tiger that I subsequently deleted and reverted back to OS Panther. I have created a lot of work since then that I haven't backed up anywhere else.
If anyone has any ideas… I'd be v v grateful
    leo

Leo: The procedure you've been using to Repair Disk is exactly right. If you wanted to Repair Permissions, though, you'd have to be able to boot to your hard drive first. Because you're unable to boot to your HD, and yet you mentioned trying to Repair Permissions, I pointed out that under present circumstances that won't be possible. Sorry if my post was confusing.
IF your FireWire hard drive has a bootable OS on it — which you'd have to have installed on it or cloned from your internal drive — you can boot the PB to that drive. Connect the drive to the PB, turn the drive on, hold down the Option key, select the external drive as the startup voloume, and allow startup to complete. Assuming that the overly-full internal hard drive then mounts on the desktop normally, you should be able to open it up in the Finder, locate the monster file, trash it and empty the trash. This is all academic, though, if there's no bootable OS installed on the external drive — which you'll know is true if it doesn't appear as a selectable startup volume when you hold the Option key down at startup.
In that case, it might be wise to look for another Mac to which you could temporarily connect your PB in FireWire Target Disk Mode. You could then trash the monster file by accessing your PB hard drive from the host Mac. This could be accomplished in five minutes at an Apple dealership, using a demo Mac on the showroom floor, if you have no other options and can find a helpful dealer. I propose this option because I don't know where to suggest you look for a bootable CD that allows Finder access, unless you have the hardware, software, and knowhow to burn one. I don't believe I have one myself. I don't need one, because my backup hard drives are all bootable.

  • BBStorm - PocketMac stalls during sync, Error 1 Skipping, PocketMac support

Blackberry Storm - probably other devices too...
I had problems with PocketMac Sync stalling and in my efforts to fix it, I induced the Error 1 Skipping problem. I've also seen messages on various forums complaining about PocketMac's lack of response to support inquiries. Here are some tips.
    PocketMac Support
You can fill in a support request at http://pocketmacsupport.net. People have complained that they never get a response. Not true. You need to go back to pocketmacsupport.net and view your trouble ticket. I sent my support request on 1/6 and had a reply on 1/8. If you want instant service, you can buy a support subscription.
    Error 1 Skipping
This problem can happen even if the new driver is installed. I induced it myself by changing my Media Card settings. There is a knowledge base article that helped me at  http://www.pocketmacsupport.net/?section=knowledge&action=view&article_id=48. The media card mass media settings have to be turned on in automatic mode. The article explains how to set it on the Pearl. It's similar on the Storm.
    Sync stalls during contacts
This one was much more complex. Essentially, you have to wipe out sync files on your Mac by running SyncClean and you have to wipe out all the contacts on your device by running DataPurgeUI. Carefully follow the instructions sent to me by Steve in support (see below) IMPORTANT: Make sure you reboot your Mac as instructed.
I followed the instructions and I could repeatedly sync the device without it stalling. Then another glitch showed up. I found that I couldn't  transfer new contacts from the Mac to the device and that sync would report missing contacts on my device and ask if I wanted to restore them. I also found that the system would quit unexpectedly when Tasks and Bookmarks options were added. THIS IS IMPORTANT: If you experience symptoms like these, repeat the steps where you run SyncClean and DataPurgeUI. Don't forget to reboot your Mac and your device. Run sync again and everything should run OK after that.
Here are the instructions Steve sent me:
    Hello Tom,
I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with PocketMac.
Is any data syncing between the Mac and BlackBerry?
Are there any errors in your Sync Log (in the Window menu)?
Please try syncing only one option at a time. This will help determine where the problem is.
If you use BES BlackBerry Enterprise Wireless server in the office, please turn it off on the BlackBerry when syncing with the Mac. Generally, to turn off wireless synchronization, you get into the specific application (Address Book, Calendar, Tasks, or Memos), then click on the wheel and choose "Options", then scroll to the "Wireless Synchronization" option, and set that to "No" to turn it off and "Yes" to turn it back on. You then have to "Save" the setting.
Please use the following utilities. Both are located in your Home folder/Library/Application Support/PocketMacSyncManager/Additional Tools.
The first is SyncClean. Please open this application. You will need to click both "Clean SyncServices Files" and Clean PocketMac Files. Confirm each choice.
Please restart your Mac after using SyncClean (to avoid "Merging local records with device" error). When syncing, if the Sync Services debug window comes up, you must click ALLOW. DO NOT check the box to delete data.
The second is DataPurgeUI. This utility will help you purge data from your BlackBerry. I recommend choosing the one you are not able to sync.WARNING: This will delete ALL Calendars, ALL Contacts, ALL Notes, or ALL Tasks from your BlackBerry.
Please try using Advanced Preferences. You can try Overwrite Device, ignore events older than 7 days, and choosing specific categories. This works for calendar as well as contacts, etc. This should help avoid bad records/data.
If you are still having trouble, I would like to gather a PMSystemReport with your computer please. Run PocketMac as you would normally do. Regardless of the results pass or fail, I need the report please.
Getting a PMSystemReport from your computer.
    1. With PocketMac SyncManager open.
    2. Go to Help, System Report, this will create a ‘PMSystemReport’ on your
desktop. *The report will take a few moments to generate on your desktop.
    3. Send the report over regardless of the results.
Please let me know if you have any other questions,
    have a great day!

I have gotten my BBStorm to sync partially once, since then the pocketmac seems to be pretty worthless. I have un/re-installed and am getting the same results. Now, there is a new problem...the pocketmac "unexpectedly quits" and makes it to the same point each time. I have moved past the "stalling" and on to just flat out quitting.
I might take my mac's approach and just get an Iphone, quit this whole Crack-berry thing.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
