Stalling screen, silent harddrive? 10.8.4

I recently had a corrupted volume directory on my boot hd. I installed a larger 3T drive and used Techtool Pro to export, clean the directory, and optimize. I ported the fixed clone to the 3T and made it the boot drive. The old boot still says it is corrupt.
HOWEVER, I am noticing a problem that may be related to a hardware issue and I don't know how to tell for sure.
The symptoms are: after a time of inactivity, I come to find the screen unresponsive. The mouse still moves but browsers will not load pages, Mail and other programs become completely unresponsive, and the spinning beachball of death happens when you hover over finder areas. Quitting programs will not quit, nor will force quit work.
The harddrives are silent and hitting keys does not "wake up" the system. It seems like there may be a communication problem with the logic board and the harddrives?
Also, upon restart, it is taking FOREVER to boot. I see the grey screen with the Apple and it is grindingly slow. The harddrives will cylcle up but it seems like it is just taking way too long. This is before you get to the login screen names.
Also, I installed 10.8.4 yesterday, but did a safeboot, fsck, permissions repair, etc. And today I redid fsck and it found 45 orphaned files. That seems like a stall sympton that isn't writing properly to the directory, which often happens when things stall out.
SMART tests pass for all drives which have it. I'm wondering though one drive could be starting to fail and cause a problem.

I am experiencing the same phenomena as barnhouse21 except that I am using an older MacBook running 10.6.8. My MacBook is a an Intel Core 2 Duo 667MHz with 2GB DDR2 SDRAM.
There is no pattern with respect to when the screen black out occurs - it is most frequent within the first 5 to 10 minutes of use after boot up but it has occurred much later. I have not noted any particular combination of applications running when this occurs (but I always have a browser going...)
The black out period lasts only a few seconds (about 3 - 5).
I get the fact this is a (more than) six year old unit but this problem started very recently - within the last 4 - 6 weeks. Everything else on this unit works fine.
I respectfully disagree with Carolyn's POV on the expectation of a power issue or logic board issue. It seems a good number of people are posting about this problem with MacBooks of widely different vintages - wouldn't that suggest some other source?

1. Turn on your computer.
2. Insert the MacOS X disk you have in to the computer.
3. Restart your computer holding down the "option" key. This will let you choose the CD/DVD disk so you can start up your computer. Tab to the "Mac OX Install DVD" so it is high-lighted. Press the "return / enter" key.
4. At the Welcome screen look to the top of the Menu Bar. You will see Utilities. Click on that. You will now see Disk Utilities.
5. On the left side of the Disk Utilities screen you SHOULD see your disk drive. If you can, click on the most left upper icon of your drive. It will be called something like "113.1 GB ...."
5a. If you can't, that is another story.... And I think about it, you may have never told your Mac where to look to startup. It is automatic, most of the time, but not ALL of the time.
6. Now click First Aid. It is next to Erase, Partition, RAID, Restore. It should fix your problem. If not You may have to Partition your drive and start over from scratch.

Closed connection in stalled screen sharing and now does not work

Using screen sharing I created a second admin account on the computer 2. I enabled quick account switching and tried to switch user accounts to the new admin account. I linked the new admin account to be shared with my existing admin account on computer 1. The screen never switched over to my new admin account and I couldn't quit screen sharing so I closed the connection with computer 2. Now I can't share the screen with computer 2 at all, even using my original admin account (not the newly created one). I can't reboot my computers because it will abort jobs that need to remain running.
I can still share screens between computer 1 and other computers (i.e. not computer 2) but when I try to share with computer 2, it doesn't even ask me to log in.

This issue remains unresolved, but since Apple Discussions decided to archive my question it is impossible to receive any replies.

Booting from Install disc Stalls at strange Mouse & Batteries Screen

Any thoughts/suggestions/answers would be greatly appreciated...
I have my hands on a friends iBook G4 purchased in April 2006. They were having problems with it and decided to wipe the drive and re-install the OS etc.
They got it wiped but could not get thru the installation process due to errors. They assumed it was a scratched install disc, and gave it to me to fix.
Upon receipt, I put in my Tiger (retail, not computer specific version) disc and booted via holding down the 'C' key. Got thru the first grey screen, then thru the grey screen with the grey Apple logo on it, and then up pops a screen I've never seen before; and the process stalls here.
This screen looks like two outline images of the Mighty Mouse from its underbelly. Image one is showing you where to install the batteries, and image two is showing you where to turn it on. And on image two, where the laser is, it's flashing red.

I couldn't get past this screen so I booted it in Firewire Target Disk Mode into my other computer and used Disk Utility to fully wipe the drive (thinking there may have been some odd file on it causing this issue). That didn't help; when I booted from the Tiger disc again, I stalled at the same spot.
Then I discovered a way past it - it was only by plugging in an old single-button USB clear Apple mouse into the USB port, that caused that screen to go away and proceed to the Tiger installation screen.
I tried this several times, and consistenly, the screen would always come up if no mouse was plugged in, but as soon as I plugged the mouse in, immediately it went away and continued on as normal.
I was able to complete the installation process and everything seems to be working as it should now. I'm just dying to know what this screen was for and why it came up.
Other things to note - even after I have a successful/working OS on the iBook, if I try to boot from any disc containing an OS, I get this same screen/situation.
I did discover the reason the initial install failed was due to bad RAM, which I've replaced and checked and is working fine now.
I've also checked the system with TechTool Protege and found no errors.
Also note that the iBook owner never uses any external or wireless mouse - just the trackpad, and has never experienced any issues with it.
And lastly, to let you know, I did reset/zap the PRAM, did the Open-Firmware resettings, and reset the battery/power-management too without any affect.
Could it be a faulty (or soon to go out) trackpad, disc drive, or USB port? Or something else? Any thoughts?

i actually had this same issue and called and talked to tech support about it, they transferred me to a product specialist and told me the reason it would do this is the install disk is most likely not the original one that came with the computer
he said that if the install disk is different, it may not recognize the specific trackpad the unit is running since it could be a different build, and will than assume that the computer is using an external mouse. If it than doesnt register the external mouse, it will assume that the mouse just doesnt have any battery power.
it makes sense to me, i also was able to bypass the "error" by using an external USB mouse, and i know my install disks were just the family pack that came from the apple store, so i can only assume thats what could be going on.

Stalled boot

Ive had a read through the various approaches to dealing with booting and im still stuck with a stalled screen; the grey apple with the loading icon. I tried safe mode and single user mode to no avail. I havent added anything to my computer lately. I did do a big print run and 50 big ish files i left to print. When i came back i had a blue screen, shut down and now i cant reboot. The print run was completed so im not sure what the issue could be. I only had a mule running as well and i have that on often when working. Anyone ever found a solution to this?

Do you mean that you have run Repair Disk, and the results state that the disk still needs repairs?
If so, you will have to use a more robust repair utility, such as DiskWarrior.
Do you have your system, or at least your critical data backed up?

Sat Pro M10 will not boot up anymore

My Sat Pro M10 worked fine until yesterday. I removed the harddrive just to check Part number (as i need to install a larger drive and want to make sure I got it right)and then re-inserted it. Now it boots up as far as the XP Pro loading screen (black background) which disappears and then the screen goes blank. This is what normally happens during boot-up, except that there would be a cursor over the blank background for a few seconds until my desktop appears. Also, when it has stopped at this blank screen the harddrive light on the front of the laptop flashes regularly every few seconds. I desperately need some of the data on the hard-drive (and no, it is not all backed up) so I do not want to use the recovery CD which is just a ghost image (isn't it). The drive is formatted as NTFS. I mention this because when I tried to use the recovery disc to check disc integrity it gave an error message that said the NTFS logfile is not loaded. It will not respond to any of the F8 safemode-type options. I think I have messed up the booting up process somehow by removing the drive rather than physically breaking anything. it seems it can read the boot partition but no further. Can anyone suggest how to fix this, or worst comes to worst a way of retrieving the data from the disc?

Hi Chris
If the system runs stabile you can remove HDD so many times you want and it should have no any influence on anything. I have removed HDD from my Tecra very often and it still works well.
Back to your issue: if there is any possibility try to connect your HDD as external device to other notebook or desktop to see if you can see it and even back up all your important data.
All Toshiba notebooks, I suppose, since two years have NTFS and that is nothing unusual.

MacBook slow startsup and goes black in Standbymode

My MacBook behaves strange. After pressing the power button it shows the grey apple screen, which is normal. When the 'windmill symbol dissappears the screen goes to the typical blue screen. So far so good but it won't load snowleapard. The screen stays blue for 5-10 minutes and suddenly Snowlepard comes up. After that the MB works normal until the standby mode for the screen or the laptop itself kick in. Then the screen goes black and I can 't use the MB anymore. When i close the lid the white indicator light in lower right corner illuminates constantly. Doesn't show the normal sleep rythme. So the MB is still on but doesnt respond to any command. To switch off I have press down the power buttion for 5 seconds.
I tried changing the harddrive but that didnt solve the prioblem. I. ve screened the harddrive but no failuers show up. Can anyone tell me whats wrong here?

I installed hard disk WD5000AADS (500GB - SATA II) CAVIAR GREEN in iMac G5 17" iSight 1,9Ghz. with Leopard. It is hung in the starting with the gray apple. Why?
I placed jumper in the pins 5-6 of the HD CAVIAR to turn it to SATA I, and nothing to changed. iMac is congealed with the gray apple in the screen.
Please, simple answers. I speak Spanish, little English.

I'm still not clear on how you did the installation onto the internal drive. My understanding is...
You used a friend's Intel Mac to duplicate your Mac OS X Leopard installation disc onto an external FireWire drive. You did it this way because your iMac G5's optical drive is broken.
You connected that external FireWire drive to your iMac G5, and started up from it, which would be the same as starting up from the optical drive with the Leopard disc. You got to the first Installer screen.
You used Disk Utility to format the new internal hard drive. Then, you installed Leopard on the the iMac G5's internal drive.
Upon restarting, the iMac G5 stalls and does not go further. This same method worked previously, with a different internal hard drive installed.
Is the above correct?

I would not be able to tell what is wrong by looking images of the components, unfortunately. I don't think the power supply or heat is the issue, because you do get to the stalled screen and you are able to start up and run the iMac from an external FireWire drive (assuming my understanding above is correct).
Are you still able to start up that iMac G5 from an external FireWire drive? If so, what happens if you put that new internal drive with the new Leopard installation into a FireWire case and try to use it to start up the iMac G5? Does that work?

My powerbook g4 dosent turn on

What model G4 PowerBook do you have? Sounds like your OS got corrupted.. This is similar to a stalled screen where the machine happily boots up until it gets to the blue screen an just sits there. Before you do an archive/restore.. restart your powerbook and then boot into single user mode(This would be OPTION+S).
Once you are booted into single user mode, type: /sbin/fsck -fy - this tries to detect and fix any problems with the root drive. If there are problems, it will attempt to fix it. Try to boot into OS X again. If you still can't and continue to get the blue screen, but nothing else.. its time to take out your install disc and archive/restore.
Don't forget to check mark preserve home folder and network settings, otherwise you will lose everything,

[SOLVED] Random freeze at poweroff / suspend.

«poweroff» command works from time to time.
When it does not work, it goes all the way to the end, prints „[42…] Power down.“ (looks like dmesg message), parks harddrive heads, and stays on (with screen on and this message shown).
«pm-suspend» (and «s2ram») also works sometimes, but most of the time it turns off the screen, parks harddrive heads, and stays on with fan spinning and leds in normal (working) state.
It depends on something (luck?), sometimes suspend and resume works with pm-suspend. But most of the time it hangs on suspend, so it is not usable.

Solved by updating to linux 3.0 and disabling plymouth (via removing „splash“ from grub.cfg).
This didn't work separately. kernel26 2.6.39.3 without plymouth gave a freeze, and linux 3.0 with plymouth gave a freeze.

Ipad 2 not jailbroken all updates hacked or remote user?

hey guys im reading the forums hearing they cant be hacked etc etc
i have never had this problem before i dunno if its the new ios or anything..
the ipad can be sitting on my couch untouched black screen (silent mode) and then light up and starts flipping threw the pages.
i open a game to play it and things keep getting clicked without me doing anything.... try going on facebook and writing something? nope buttons keep getting pressed and switching between numbers and fonts...
I loved the ipad before and basically never use my cpu anymore. Now atleast until they get a better update or a solution for whatever is going on its going to sit and collect dust.
im thinking of driving a hr to the ipad store and showing them my ipad acting weird or showing them the videos ive taken of this just ramdomly happening.
My computer seems fine and i will be deleting itunes off my cpu.
as for my ipad i have cleared all my history and cache, got completely off icloud, no bluetooth. and dont see any weird programs.
Any ideas of what i should do?
on a side note
my phone iphn 4 i think is not ringing for one person in my contacts.. everyone else it rings for but not this one i can be right beside it and then it flashes one missed call.. any ideas?

one thing would be to make a trojan which would make it possible to steal info from the ios device or even routing trough it to masquerade as it
but it would be many times more complex to active pressed and change what the screen display and it would not help the "hacker" anything it would just alert the user that something was wrong making the hackers access much more troublesome
but logic deduction hardware failure or the likes would be 87% more likely that your device being compromised it's just not logical behaveiour that effords would be put into displaying to the user that the device was hacked

NB305-N410BN-G wont boot up from anything!

I let my nephew borrow my computer for 2 days when I got it back he said it wouldn't start that the battery must have died. I plugged in turned it on ..Nothing and I mean nothing! The battery and power lights come on and the fan does for a few seconds, no screen no harddrive no network no USB power, I thought it might be the display plugged into an external monitor..Nothing. I did a hard reset by draining the power then restarted ..Nothing! I have a back up and plugged in my external harddrive to see if I could somehow get it to read it and nope... Nothing. I even tried holding down the zero key during startup for 2 min., nothing! Any idea what he may have done to it or a way for me to start it up please I'm all ears.

Sounds like the hardware has been damaged to me, Peter. Since you have ruled this out, apparently, I support your resolution of his problem for the time being.

Is there some parameters that i can modify to increase durability batterie and reduce consumation of batterie energy ?

Yes, there are many. First place to look is in power manager where you can make a custom profile that puts the unit in low-power mode when on battery power. You can adjust many things such as the power the cpu uses, brightness of screen, timers to shut down screen and harddrive, etc... additionally there are many options in bios to disable features. If you aren't using something, then disable it, such as your optical drive. If you don't want it disabled for more then a brief period of time then you can simply remove it. Also things like bluetooth, wwan, wifi and wireless usb can be disabled (soft) by using the onscreen display (fn+f5) or (hard) by going into bios>security>I/O ports, and disable them so they don't get powered on at all. If you have a Penryn class processor (and proper penryn board), T8100, 8300, 9300, 9500, they can go into ultralow power mode where they virtually shut off when not needed. With the older merom CPUs I believe there are 3rd party tools that can help to throttle them down when not needed, but not to the same extent as a penryn. Besides conserving power, this can also reduce heat.
However, if your wanting a laptop to use for extended periods of time on battery power, then a Tseries wouldn't be my choice, they are a performance laptop, something powered by a lesser chip like the Intel Atom would draw much less power, but you might not be happy with the performance. If on the otherhand, you're just trying to maximise your battery time for the seldom times you need to run on battery, then you should find some of this very useful, and I'm sure others will "chime in" with more tips and pointers to help you.

ps. There is also an additional ultrabay battery you can get, but they are poorly designed by most reports. Not only do they have a low charge capacity, but they become the primary battery when installed and get all the wear n tear so don't last long and they are very expensive.

PowerMac G5 boot up stall at apple screen

G5 2.5 Dual Chip. Push power button, hear the boot chime (sometimes) then it stalls on the gray apple screen with no spinning "flower". If I leave it running the fans start slowly running louder and louder until it sounds like a jet engine.
Fortunately, I have the system disk in the CD drive. However, when I try to boot from it using the C key, I hear the disk spin but then it stops and a "buster" symbol replaces apple on the screen. Then fans go crazy again. I have disconnected all all USB, Firewire and RAM that did not come with the computer. Same symptoms. Tried booting in single user and safe mode but keyboard doesn't seem to be responding. I also swithched the USB ports for the mouse and keyboard and tried again.
I am not positive which OS version I am running but I think I have updated recently.

I have had this problem as well on over 6 occasions,It happened to me most of the time after a ram install,The last episodes I had I started hooking everything backup that I had unplugged after my grey screen episode.
1st I hooked up my 2nd hd,all is well
2nd I install memory,no luck,grey screen,I install 2 more different pairs,no luck grey screen.I try to start with original ram,grey screen!that trips me out most of all!so I boot into safemode,repair disk permissions,I am able to reboot.
One pair of ram I tried to install,I had in my system and The computer gave me a message"harddrive is failing in 2nd drive bay"at the time I just thought oh well bad hd,I have come to find out that is a signal for faulty ram,I kept the ram in the system at the time,I did not get any other errors,I tried to install another pair of ram one night,grey screen!
One part of the grey screen problem is faulty ram.
The pram battery on the motherboard maybe another part of the problem,in the last few weeks I was able to install 2 pairs of 1gb modules in my g5,and I tested them with mem test,ram is good.But,On rare occasions my 2nd harddrive would dissappear!
After a few reboots it would reappear!
There was a power outage this weekend at my house,I have my g5 on a back up ups,I had the g5 on back up power,I did not have my main monitor on backup power a 24inch dell dvi connection, I have a 15inch cinema display on the adc,still going because the g5 is on back up.I hard shutdown by pressing the power button on the front of the computer.
The power was out for 4hrs,that means the battery drained out and the g5 was with out power for an extended period of time.
The following day I had decided to call applecare about replacing my powersupply,My serial number qualifys for replacement.
To my suprise the second harddrive is not there!I have a different grey screen now,my 24inch is black,the 15 is grey,a couple of minutes go by,both screens turn grey,computer boots to show only one hd!
So I keep everything like it is,tell applecare guy whats going on after I request power supply replacement,he says you should take it to the applestore.
After I get off the phone with applecare guy I get a crazy hunch to disconnect my adc display,I boot the machine,Both harddrives are there!
What I am getting to here is the g5 is a power sucker,now that I have good ram,I think the battery on the mother board is no good.The power supply may also be suspect.
I think sometimes most outlets may not be strong enough support the power hungry g5,ln my case when I added ram that=s using more power.thus drainning the battery.
I to have noticed after leaving the system unplugged,the system will boot up.I think it resets something internally,then you plug it back up,your fine for a little while,then the problem returns.

Grey Screen at start-up - Troubleshoot harddrive and/or logic board?

Hi everyone. Sorry for the lengthy post, but hopefully you can help me - I've spent a lot of time on the boards already, but hoped you could clarify some things.
The problem is my Powerbook will not get past the grey screen at start-up. It will not boot off the 10.5 install disk and I can't eject the install disk to run the hardware test disk. Removing 3rd party ram, resetting PRAM, NVRAM, attempting to boot in 'safe' mode haven't helped. The harddrive is softly clicking/searching.
So some questions:
1) Is it possible that an interrupted time machine backup will bork the drive to the point where it wont boot? (See back-story below). I wouldn't have thought so, but prove me wrong.
2) Should I be able to boot from the install disk if the harddrive is stuffed?
3) If it is hardware, it's either the logic board or the drive. Is there any way to determine what it is (eg: is it possible to do a remote hardware test?)
Edit: Just tried mounting the drive in target disk mode using an iBook, but it wouldn't mount. Powerbook displays a black screen.
Oh, and I should point out that this is well out of warranty and any fixes would have to be cheap : ). Basically I need to determine if it's the drive or the logic board, preferably without having to buy and install a new drive when it may not be the problem.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Here's the back story if it's any help; recently upgraded to 10.5, created a base install disk image of all installed and registered apps (in the event that my drive failed). Copied data etc from the previous system over. It ran fine for a few days. This morning I ran time machine for the first time, left the computer for a while, came back and the screen was black (as if it was just displaying black, as opposed to off). Thinking it was just a display issue (which I've seen before), I put the system to sleep (power button, then 's'), woke it up again; still black. So I forced a shut down (wouldn't allow me to do a normal shut down, because dialogue boxes must have been preventing it) and on boot I got the grey screen.

Hi Ben W. I don't have a good answer for you, but based on your information and what you've done, I think I would try starting the machine after disconnecting the harddrive. That requires taking the top off first, for which instructions are on ifixit.com.
I can conjecture that a blown HD is preventing normal operation, perhaps sucking the power down, disrupting the optical drive, etc. This is purely conjecture, but costs you nothing but your time. If this turns out to be the case, I figure the optical drive should start responding again (hold C key during reboot, etc).
