    Yes.
    It's loud.
70-some decibels of loud, particularly when the fans spool up.
And you need a big flat spot, or a 19" rack.

  • Adobe Reader for stand-alone computer

Can I get the complete program load for Adobe Reader on a CD to load onto a stand-alone computer that has no Internet connection?
    Thank you,
    Nelson

You can download the offline installer here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Be sure to choose the right version and language.
From there you can burn it to a CD or put it on a flash drive and copy it to the other computer.

  • Need help transfering Primary Computer Status

I have an extremely old HP Tower computer (Windows XP) that is used as the primary itunes sync computer (has over 8000 media items on it). This computer is very slow and is about to crash. I also have a Dell laptop (Windows Vista) that is newer and is authorized to the HP. There is music on the HP that I ripped from CD's as well. My main question is: Can I make the laptop my primary  sync computer without losing media or wiping out my ipod's media?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd normally recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See Make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

I am trying to download iTunes on my new desktop computer (Windows 7, 64 bit).  It starts installing, and then stops with the message- "The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." This is a stand alone computer and I am the sole user.   Please help.

This is a Microsoft Windows Issue.
    From a MS Support Engineer:
    "Hi,
    ·        Is the computer on a domain?
    ·        Is the issue isolated to only this software or you get the same error message with other software’s as well?
Try the steps below and check if it helps.
    Step 1:
Run the software setup file as an administrator and check if it helps.
    a. Right click on the setup file of the software that you are trying to install.
    b. Select “Run as administrator”.
    Step 2:
Temporarily disable the antivirus software running on the computer and check if you are able to install the software.
    Disable antivirus software
    Warning:
Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
    Step 3:
    a. Click Start, type "Local Security Policy" (without quotes) and press enter.
    b. Click on Software Restriction Policies.
    c. In the right pane, double click on the "enforcement".
    d. Select “All users except local administrators”.
    e. Click Ok and restart the computer and check if the issue is fixed."

  • Share iTunes library with multiple users of same computer

I have a new Vista Ultimate 32 computer and copied my existing iTunes library to the administrator acct in Vista. Now I want the family to use the user accts rather than the admin acct when on the computer. How can I get iTunes in a user acct to default to the library that exists in the admin acct?
I don't want to share w/other computers and I don't have a network. This is a single stand alone computer w/multiple accts.
I am stumped so any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

THANK YOU! I've been trying to find info on how to do this through the 'help' option. GRRRRR!
So simple, but not at all intuitive.

  • Can the iPad truly replace a "normal" computer yet?

My wife and I are looking to replace two computers. One is her Sony Vaio laptop, the other is my iMac G5. I mentioned to her that we could both get iPads, one for me and one for her and that it would really do everything we would need them to do. I know that the collective opinion is that tablets are the future of computing - proof being Apple releasing a 128GB iPad w/ Retina today. If I were to "start from scratch", as in, I don't have a PC with this content already on it that can be easily synched to the new iPads - I just have two iPads that I need to get my physical music albums onto as well as GBs of photos from my camera. Can you get you're own content to the iPad without the help of a traditional computer - be it laptop or desktop? Is there some sort of USB adapter for the new iPads that you can use to connect other devices to it for uploading content - like a external CD-ROM drive or a camera?

Great discussion, but I don't think anyone has addressed the true question. ddemuth78 isn't asking is it feasible, he's asking if it is even possible. He has already stated the iPad does everything he and his wife do with their computers. The question is, "is it yet physically possible to have an iPad be a single stand alone computer?"
There are two basic uses for a computer, creating content, and consuming content. As a content creator, I find the iPad nearly useless. However, as a content consumer, I find the iPad (or any well designed tablet) to be the best device for consuming. Obviously, if you have multiple monitors or need in depth file management tools, the iPad isnt the right tool for the job. But what if the iPad IS the right tool for every job you want your computer to do? Is it physically possible to have just an iPad without another "real" computer to connect it to? Someone else already mentioned, by adding a simple case with integrated keyboard you have resolved the main issue with any content creation, the virtual keyboard reduces everyone to "hunt and peck" mode. Alternatively, you could connect a Bluetooth wireless full keyboard as well so you can type on your lap. First issue resolved.
The biggest issue I see with having the iPad as your only computer is that it simply wasn't designed to be so. It was designed to be managed by syncing it to the main computer using a USB cable and iTunes as the management software. However, the reason the main question can even be asked is because eventually, once you've got the iPad set up the way you want it, and you've transferred your music (which largely lives on iCloud now for free with the advent of iTunes Match), and photos from the main computer (especially if you now use the iPad as your camera so no more transferring required), once you get to this point, you really don't need to connect to you computer any more. Or do you?
For the email, music, pictures, games, and video chat crowd, once you've got the iPad set up the way you want it, do you ever NEED to connect it to a computer again? THATS the question. Plus, is the question (or the answer) different for the owners of different generations of iPads (or other tablets).
My mother plays games, does email, browses, takes pics on a camera (iPad 0, no camera) and uploads them to various sites. Her Wintel machine is 15 YEARS OLD!!!!! She is an artistic person and hates the machine and all the boxes and wires.she loves the wireless iPad. Clearly, if she is going to continue to own a computer it's time to get a new one. It would be a MUCH more pleasant experience on a new computer, but she will still need to got to the computer to use it, and still have to look at the modem, router, and accompanying wires. Question, can she use the iPad wirelessly in the living room, using the HD flat screen TV as the monitor, the virtual keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard and the iPads touch screen for the mouse and NOT buy a new computer? The question isn't "is this the right thing for her?" It absolutely is. The question is, can the iPod successfully survive without being synced to a main computer ever again?"
The only reason this is even a question is because the iPad was never designed to do this. It may have been envisioned as being able to do this one day, that may well be its ultimate function, but as yet, it has not been designed to survive without the occasional syncing to a main computer. Keeping in mind the iPad is really just an iPhone without the phone. Even iPhone, until the current release of iPhone 5 was meant to sync to a computer. My understanding is that the new 5 can in fact live successfully without syncing to a computer - the market wanted it so Apple delivered. So, can the iPad currently do the same or is there still a generation or two to go before it gets there? Especially the iPad 0. Are there things that it simply needs to be synced to the computer for that would hamper its function as a stand alone device? I don't know. What I do know is that it was designed as a side car, as a piggyback unit, as an extension of your main computer to give you a consumption option other than sitting at that desk in that folded up shape.
My mother is asking, and I am investigating. It seems like it should be able to survive to on its own, without another computer, but it wasn't designed for that so I am loathe to tell her yet that it is OK.
Anyone got any absolute knowledge one way or another, or resources that can be used to get a definitive answer?
    Thanks.

How's your computer's status - pretty chronic all the time you have you have MacKeeper installed .
It has a reputation on here as being possibly the worst software you can install on a Mac. Numerous reports on these forums and elsewhere of the chaos it's caused for many, many users. Uninstall it PDQ - you don't need it.

  • What can be done for problems with downloading Firefox to computer?

Having problems with problems downloading Firefox to a computer that has a slow internet connection. Trying to install Firefox on a computer running XP that has older Windows Explorer program. The computer was used as a stand alone computer and not connected the internet for a few years, so no recent windows explorer updates have been made. The computer seems to perform well otherwise. Have been advised by tech adviser to try loading Firefox to get most up to date browser. The thought was Windows Explorer is running too slow due to being outdated. The computer is connected by a Ethernet cable to a router. Other computers use this setup successfully. Limited internet connections can be made, so the computer modem does work. The download using Windows Explorer is timing out, due to outdated browser. Have tried to install Firefox on the computer using portable version of Firefox on USB drive. Have also tried to download to another computer, saving the install program on a USB drive, then placing the file on the older computer. Looking for suggestions on how to install Firefox on the older computer that can't download the program directly. Feel if can get Firefox on computer, can make necessary updates to computer and slow internet connection issues will disappear.

Some updates are better handled by Internet Explorer or the built-in updater, such as any updates from Microsoft's Windows Update or Office Update systems. (These systems are not compatible with other browsers.)
You can use the "all systems" page to download a full installer and then copy it over to your XP system.

  • LastLogonTimeStamp Attribute Not Updated for Computer Account Over SSL-VPN

We like to use LastLogonTimeStamp (LLTS) to find stale computer accounts, disable them, and eventually delete time.  What we have found is that domain member computers that connect to the domain exclusively by SSL-VPN (for instance in the case of employees
who work from their home office) do not update LLTS.  Consequently these computers frequently appear on stale computer reports.
I suppose the required logon type is never used when connecting over SSL-VPN.  Therefore I would like to know if there is a way via a logon script or some other method that we can update this attribute.

That is normal as you connect to VPN using locally cached credentials for the user and the computer accounts.
My recommendation to track these computers is to have an agent that periodically report the computer status (Example: Using Microsoft Intune) or have a scheduled task that will run a script when the user is connected to VPN and register the computer name
as active in a file that is hosted in a share.

  • Ideal KT4V BIOS settings for XP2500+ Barton

I've read AMD's recommendations for the KT4V BIOS settings  http://www.amdforums.com/showindex.php?s=&threadid=186506 , but they seem to be very generic. I would like to know the settings that would give me the highest performance, without causing any instability, using my present system and usage. My son does 3D animation and gaming on this computer. This is a stand alone computer (no network). The latest version BIOS for the KT4V offers an option in Power Management Features to enable CPU HALT Command Detection. I heard that this would work better than Cooler XP in cooling the CPU. I enabled it and my CPU Temp dropped 6-10 degrees C. Is this recommended? What is the down side of this action? My system is as follows: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ w/ Vantec VA4-C7040 CPU fan (w/Arctic Silver 3) MSI KT4V mobo Gainward Golden Sample Ti/450 TV w/ 128MB DDR (GeForce3 Ti 200) 2 - Kingston 512MB PC2700 DDR RAM Antec TRUE550 power supply 1 - 40GB 7200RPM hard drive 1 - 30GB 5400RPM hard drive 1 - CD-ROM 1 - CD-RW 1 - floppy drive Windows XP home Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Barry

As a result of my research, these are the BIOS settings that I am using.  My computer runs well and is stable.

  • Visual Studio 2013 - New Project

    Hi
Many years ago I wrote a VB6 program for school students for diet analysis in terms of energy and a range of vitamins and minerals.  It drew comparisons against the national guidelines.  Results were tabulated, graphed and output provided in Word
and Excel files.  The VB6 program used an Access database containing about 850 foods. It has been used by quite a few schools and appears to always be used across a network.
My intention is to re-write the whole program in Visual Studio 2013 using Visual Basic code.  I intend to refresh the whole program and add a wider range of foods and update the comparisons using the latest national guidelines and food label formats.
This will be my first attempt at Visual Studio and I intend to use a Windows Forms Application approach.  The data used is "static" - it does not change it is simply a "read only" file - get the data, multiply for mass and add up each
category (energy, vitamins and minerals).  It is a "file of data" rather than a true database.  In reality a 1000 food data file should only be about 200 Kbytes.  As an Excel file it is only 150Kbytes but as an Access file it is bloated
    up to a 550Kbyte file.
The program is not sophisticated, so, should I be using a WPF Application or a Window Forms Application?  The WFA just feels a bit more familiar than a WPF.  Also, the program is intended for loading onto a network at some schools or on a stand-alone
    computer.
My greatest concern is about the choice of approaching the data.  A "true" database is not needed because the data is simply for about 1000 rows of food each with about 20 columns of data (numeric and text).  The Access file is simple
but I could create an mdf file (I think) but would that be an advantage?  With the Access data I appear to have loaded the file and created a DataAdapter and I have experimented with GetData() which works.  My attempts to use ExecuteReader() failed
completely.  Is there a better approach?  such as SQL "DataTable.Rows(RowPosition)(“column name")”??  It seems a very sophisticated method for a small file of data.
The Access Database that I have experimented with in VS2013 appears to use Jet Drivers???? which proved to create a few problems for installations in the past.  Should I be using an mdf file approach??  I will need to distribute the data in a "resx"
file.  I could use SQL Server Management Studio (free download) and then use VS2013 to read the Access file and build a new mdf database.....
I am not convinced that I have the best solution.  Any comments and suggestions would be very greatly appreciated.
Many thanks for reading this far.

Looking good!  The "attachment" to a new project worked first time.
I can see all the new Classes by hovering a pointer over the "declarations" above "Public Class Form1"
Seems to access the VBNetForum URL quite quickly using a high speed BB connection.
I am greatly looking forward to the next stage...........

    Keith,
I intentionally truncated that post with “let me know when you’re that far along” simply because it’s very easy to get lost
with a concept that’s new. This isn’t as different as you might think though – you’ve been using a database, and now you’ll be using instances of a class (various ones).
Over the years here, I’ve seen many times where people use databases because they assume “that’s the only way to do it”. The
    “it” actually being encapsulation.
    Encapsulation
is what they need and certainly a database provides that (and a lot more), but it’s not the only way it can be done.
Think about this a bit: A DataRow encapsulates the related data for whatever it is. For example maybe it’s a person’s data –
you’d want to keep the person’s first name, surname, and things like that all together because it defines something related to that one person. You then have a collection of those DataRows in a DataTable.
In much the same way, what I have here is similar: Instead of a DataRow, I’m using instances of a class. Instead of columns
in a DataRow, I’m using properties of the instance, and instead of a DataTable, I’m using a List(Of Class).
    …the concept is identical.
Classes are a means of building an object in OOP. In and of itself, it’s really just a template or a blueprint (overused metaphor).
Deborah Kurata put it best, in my opinion, when she said that a class is like a cookie-cutter and the objects created are cookies. You eat the cookies, not the cookie-cutter!
A class works that way exactly: You can’t “consume” a class; you consume the objects (instances) created by them and in this
case, like a DataTable housing DataRows, I’m storing them in a very specific type of collection known as a List(Of T).
I don’t want to get too far adrift about classes and/or OOP here – not that I would mind the discussion – but it’s a new concept
to you and it’s easy to get confused about what’s doing what. I’ll get more to the specifics next.
That entire class library is the data layer; it doesn’t work with controls of any sort, only the data.
That said though, in the following I’ll explain how controls can be ‘assisted’ by the methods in the classes.
The main class in this is the one called “FoodComposition”. That one is only barely started – the
    only
method in it so far is an overloaded way to add a new instance to a list of them.
Two of the classes are really just ‘supporting classes’ – those being the ones called “FoodCategory” and “LabelNote”. Don’t
get me wrong here, they do have methods in them (with more to be added), but you won’t too much be working with those in the user’s program – you will in the program that I’ll create for you to add/modify/remove* and so on, but for now let’s set those two
    aside.
    *  The fact that these are “supporting” classes, I have it set up such that you cannot remove an instance of those if there’s
a reference to them in FoodComposition. If you want to see where/how I’m doing that, look at the code of the class FoodCategory, for example, and go to line 633, then read the code of that method named “Remove”.
The one class in the bunch which is pretty much self-contained is the one called DietaryReferenceValue (DRV is the name you
used). That one makes for a good topic to explain how I can provide methods which lend a helping hand to your controls but don’t, directly, have anything to do with controls.
I have a method in that class named “GetAllGroupNames” which is a function that returns a string array containing the names
of each instance’s group. That might be used, for example, if you wanted to show a ListBox or a ComboBox to allow the user to select one of the group names:
    Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, _
    ByVal e As System.EventArgs) _
    Handles MyBase.Load
Dim url As String = _
    "http://www.fls-online.com/VBNet_Forum/12-13-14/NutritionData.xml"
    GetNutritonData(url)
    ListBox1.Items.AddRange(NutritionData.DietaryReferenceValue.GetAllGroupNames(drvList))
    End Sub
So, for example, when the user selects one of them:
    Private Sub ListBox1_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, _
    ByVal e As System.EventArgs) _
    Handles ListBox1.SelectedIndexChanged
    Try
    If ListBox1.SelectedIndex > -1 Then
Dim selectedGroup As String = _
    ListBox1.Items(ListBox1.SelectedIndex).ToString
    Dim drv As NutritionData.DietaryReferenceValue = _
    NutritionData.DietaryReferenceValue.GetInstance(drvList, selectedGroup)
    MessageBox.Show(drv.ToString, drv.SexAndAgeGroup)
    End If
    Catch ex As Exception
    MessageBox.Show("An error occurred:" & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & ex.Message, _
    "Program Error", MessageBoxButtons.OK, _
    MessageBoxIcon.Warning)
    End Try
    End Sub
As you can see there, I’m using the .ToString method which I have overridden in the class. That’s also part of what I wanted
    to discuss: What it gets.
Currently I don’t have much else (other than maintenance routines like adding, removing, renaming) in there; the methods that
you use are methods that I set up – but in the words of Hamlet, “therein lies the rub” … I don’t know what you want!
Give some thought to just what methods you might want to have in there. For example maybe you might want to have a method which
will return the value of one specific nutrient which you specify. I can do that, I just don’t know yet that you want it so it’s not there.
Quite often I’ll also provide what I’m come to call “convenience properties”. For example with the property named “Sodium”,
I might have another property (read-only) named “Sodium_String” which returns a string in whatever format you wanted it to have.
These are things I don’t know that you want and also things which you may not have known can be done, thus this writing. ;-)
The other day I asked about units. It may not be where you want to go with this but I’d also like to offer that we can provide
more granularity to the nutrients themselves. Don’t get me wrong, it’d be an overhaul of what I have right now, but I’ll do it if you want to proceed:
Imagine that we have a class, all by itself, that we call “Nutrients”. At the very least that class would have members like
Name and UnitOfMeasure, but it could have anything else you wanted. An example that comes to mind might be the URL to a page on Wikipedia about it, or maybe a URL to an appropriate image or … whatever you dream of here.
So then when using them in the other classes, “Calcium” would, itself, be an object which has a name (“Calcium”), a unit-of-measure
    (maybe “milligram”), and so on.
It’s a lot to take in all at once and even this is something you may want to reread, but do give it thought. Let me know what
methods you want in the classes which will help you in your user’s program.
Still lost in code, just at a little higher level.

  • Run-Time Engine error

I have created an automated test and had it running as an executable on a stand alone test computer. I updated my LabView software to 8.6.1. I just made some changes to the test and recompiled it. When I tried to run it on the stand alone computer it gave me an error about the LabVIEW 8.6.1 run-time engine missing. I thought when the project was built all the files that pertained to running it were also built into the folder. Has anyone run into this that could offer some advice.
    Thanks
    Chirs

Did you create an installer or simply build the exe? If you only built the exe you will need to install the run-time engine on the target machine. If you created an installer you can include the installation of the run-time engine as part of the installer.
