Standalone Mail Server or Combined Services - Which is better?

Looking to solve some disagreement regarding email services. Any advice would be appreciated.
Some time ago, our consultants recommended setting up a separate email server to handle incoming/outgoing mail for our hosting services. We host over 200 domains and have a lot of email. Current system is running 10.9 on a G4.
New advice is wanting us to move all accounts to our primary applications server which hosts software, e-commerce and all data files for running the websites. We have redundancy on this machine and not the stand-alone.
Are there advantages or disadvantages of running mail services on the application servers or is a stand-alone scenario best? Anyone have any compelling advice to settle this disagreement?
Thanks.
David

I have a OSX Lion Server running as a file server in our network. But I have no clue if there's a way to use it's mailserver without smtp auth.
Sure. Turn it on.
The default mode is to not require authentication. You have to turn on authentication if you want it.
Changing authentication on/off is a matter of clicking a radio button.

  • Mail Server Transfer!

    I have Xserve running Mail Server, OD and Web which includes Mailman and webmail.
    I have the boot drive and another partition which has the Mail Data on it..
    what is the best way to transfer the files from this machine to another Xserve running 10.6.. i mean i know how to export mail settings under Server Admin, but how can i get the database and all that transfered.. i'm afraid i will lose something .. and never done this before!

    I do my Cyrus backups to one of the internal drives on my Xserve via mailbfr (1 for backup 2 drives for mirrored OS, and an external array for mail data). When I want to migrate a user to my new Xserve running 10.6, I eject the backup disk and put it in one of the drive bays on the new Xserve. On the new Xserve, I have two 2TB drives mirrored for the mail, an internal SSD drive for the OS and a cheapo third drive I backup the OS to via Carbon Copy Cloner. I can just pop the third drive out and put in the backup disk from the other Xserve.
    Note: I assume you are running Leopard Server on the old Xserve. Before you move any mail data over, you must stop the mail service. Cyrus is prone to corruption of the mail database unless you stop the mail service. Not so much with Dovecot, which is a big reason I am migrating...
    Other was to do it are to copy your mail database to a Firewire of USB drive, then on to the new server, or over the network. Just remember to stop the mail service first.
    On my new server, I am creating my OD users from scratch. I had some corruption on my other server, and wanted to start clean. For the mail settings, I'm duplicating them by hand via the ServerManager Mail plugin, or manually editing the files (/etc/postfix/main.cf and etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf). Also, I'm not doing all the mail accounts at once, but in groups. all-at-once is too risky for me. See:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2383747&tstart=0
    for some specifics on my mail migration.

  • Developing Extensible mail server

    hello,
    iam developing a java code , which is used to send mail using Extensible Mail server(XMS) in smtp, which is capable of sending 10,000 at once,
    i need some coding or details about Extensible mail server or releated links and java coding ,
    iam looking forward for ur replys
    if any mail me [email protected]
    regards,
    Ganesh.R

    My service provider at the house is Cox. I know they do not let anyone send mail thru their server, if you are not at a Cox provided connection.
    The problem is not with the server I am currently connected to. I can select several servers, like g-mail and .Mac and they work. But Cox will not work while away from home. This is true no matter where I am currently located.
    I would like to be able to send my Cox e-mail and have it tagged with my Cox e-mail address, rather than my g-mail or .Mac address (depending on which server I select).
    Receiving e-mails is not a problem.

  • Is there a way to convert Crystal Reports to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 reporting services?

    Post Author: Lourdes Hernandez
    CA Forum: General
    Our department has always worked with and we love Crystal Reports. Unfortunately, certain reports now need to be converted to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 reporting services which from what I read I think they are *.rdl reports. Does Crystal reports have any way around this? I would have to learn this other tool when I'm already so happy with Crystal. I was thinking If I could just code the report in crystal and export it in a specific format that would be compatible Microsoft, the problem would be solved.
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Ditto!
    There are some software packages to convert from CR to RS, but none work 100% AFAIK, and will require manual tuning.
    Seems like a big hassle and learning curve just to get reports published via another method - I know I'd put up huge resistance if they tried to take my CR away from me!

  • SMTP Mail Server Address

    Hi All!
    Can we find the IP address of the SMTP mail server and its outgoing mail port number through java? If Yes, how?
    regards,
    Rajat Aggarwal

    Hi!
    Actually, I am using Java Mail API to send a mail.
    However, i do not know the SMTP mail server's address
    through which i should be routing my mail. I need
    some way to find the IP Address and the port number
    for this.In other words you're looking for random open relays to use to send spam through.
    Why should we help you do something that's illegal almost everywhere and very poor ethics even where not?
    If you've legitimate access to a mailserver you'll have been given the connection details.

  • TS4002 I cannot edit my incoming mail server name under iCloud

    This morning my iCloud email stopped working. When I open the Mail preferences panel and look at the iCloud account, the Incoming Mail Server is listed as "mail.example.com" and is greyed out. I cannot edit this entry to the proper iCloud server name. I can edit my user name and password, but when I try to save changes it tells me that I cannot leave the Incoming Mail Server name blank. Which wouldn't be a problem if I could, you know, change it.
    This just started this morning. I noticed that Mail was asking me for passwords that have been in my Keychain for ages, and I had to manually enter them all to get to my email.
    My account is working on my iOS devices.
    Tom

    Looked around on other threads on Apple Support and found a solution that worked for me.
        - Delete your iCloud account in Mail Preferences, Account tab.
         - Click "+" to add an account
         - Fill in your iCloud name-address-password, then hold Option key down, then click 'Continue'. Holding Option down takes you to a screen you normally don't see!
         - Change the incoming Mail Server from 'mail.me.com' to 'imap.mail.me.com'
         - Proceed creating your account.
    Try!

  • Newie Mail server and running other services

    We have a small office network of 6 macs that connect to a Panther server, this server provides DNS and file sharing and thats about it a Filemaker Sever and Retrospect Server. I doesn't suffer from heavy use
    I have been using a a separate mac to run Quickmail server 1 (os9) and I need to upgrade it as some of the mail protocols are out of date.
    We have a static IP address assigned to our mail gateway by our service provider.
    My question or advice
    Should I just start using OS X server to run mail services
    or
    Upgrade Quickmail and continue running it separately on a new mac mini (or similar)
    My concerns are at the moment any problem with email locally can be solved pretty much without effecting the other server or the network.
    Thanks

    The basic setup is prety simple...
    Replace following with your own equivalents...
    Domain name: woopee.com (the domain name after the "@" in your emails)
    Host name: mail.woopee.com (the hostname your MX record points to. Does not need to match server hostname. This will be the hostname mail server uses when communicating with other servers)
    Local Host Aliases: woopee.com (a list of the domains you want to accept mail for. Probably just same as Domain name?)
    Local network: 192.168.10.0/24 (LAN IP range for local users. Used to bypass authentication when they send mail out)
    Server Admin-> Mail-> General...
    Tick:Enable POP
    Tick:Enable IMAP
    Tick:Enable SMTP, Allow incoming mail, Enter Domain name & Host name (from above).
    Mail-> Relay
    Tick: Accept SMTP relays... Enter localhost IP: 127.0.0.1/32 and Local network (from above).
    Tick: Use these junk mail rejection servers. Add: zen.spamhaus.org
    Mail->Filters
    Tick: scan for junk mail. Minimum score: 5 (can be reduced later)
    Junk mail should be: Delivered (will just tag and forward to recipient)
    Tick: Attach subject tag: * Junkmail *
    Tick: Scan email for viruses
    Infected messages should be: Deleted
    Tick: update junk mail & virus database: 1 time per day
    Mail->Advanced->Security
    SMTP: none (this prevents smtp authentication from anyone outside your Local network)
    IMAP: Tick: Clear, Plain, Cram-md5 (or leave all unticked if only using pop accounts)
    POP: Tick: APOP
    Mail->Advanced->Hosting
    Local Host Aliases: Add: localhost & woopee.com (separate entries, see Local host aliases, above)
    That's it (I think ...although I cannot guarantee I have not missed something). There will be no problem setting this up and seeing it going whilst still using the existing mail server. Set up client accounts to send and receive from new server and you can send mail around internally to test. Last thing would be to change your firewall port-forwarding for SMTP from existing server to new one.
    Watch the mail.log in Console for any errors & do plenty tests.
    Ensure users have mail enabled in Workgroup Manager.
    There are plenty mods available beyond this. Have a good read through the mail services manual (I know its a bit confusing at times) and you should see where the above settings fit in.
    Lots of stuff on the forum here which you can search for. Spam filtering in particular can be made far more effective but requires editing of the underlying unix configuration files - again, plenty of previous discussions about that on forum. Meantime, the zen.spamhaus.org RBL will filter out a great many spammers.

    hi..what settings work on iphone 4 - lineone mail server setup.. have tried Tiscali recommendations, which aren't biong picked up..nightmare..!
    Used Imap, Pop mail..!

    Thanks for the quick read and response. Do you feel the issue might lie with the fact that it is a Mac Mini? And possibly just not powerful enough to run Leopard Server? I have to say in our trials with MacPro it was like night and day as to how they performed. And if you could elaborate on this "Many VPNs don't play well with NAT so your VPN server should have a direct connection to the public network (preferably firewalled, of course, but not NATted)." Most every SoHo and for that matter uses simple NAT translation for security even our multi thousand dollar Cisco PIX and ASA's are basic NAT devices to start with. How would you put the VPN on public net while keeping the attack surface low for the rest of the services like file, web, mail and print?
    Don't get me wrong I want this to work more than you can imagine. We are so tired of supporting MSFT technologies that cost thousands a year in antivirus, antispyware, antispam and other malware protection for the enterprise. We know that Leopard has great potential but for an integrator, getting this system up and functional is not an easy task. And the worst part of it is every time we have called for support the tech always lets out a sigh when they hear we have run standard setup because they are not allowed to walk us thru the server console to make repairs. And have been told by 3 techs so far that this is a new product and the support avenues are not there for standard since it just supposed to work out of the box. But when it doesn't then ohh well. Which is sorta sad...

  • Querying Exchange 2013 Mail server for email items using c# and Exchange Web Services

    I am trying to upgrade an existing application that reads Exchange 2003 using WebDAV. The mail server is to be upgraded to Exchange 2013, so I am checking how I can use EWS.
    I have a problem in that although I know the inbox has unread items with attachments, the query I am running against the
    FindItems object is returning empty (results.totalCount=0)
    Here is my code snippet:
    private static void GetAttachments(ExchangeService service)
    // Return a single item.
    ItemView view = new ItemView(100);
    ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = CertificateValidationCallBack;
    ExchangeService service = new ExchangeService(ExchangeVersion.Exchange2010_SP2);// .Exchange2007_SP1);
    service.UseDefaultCredentials = true;
    service.AutodiscoverUrl("[email protected]", RedirectionUrlValidationCallback);
    ItemView view = new ItemView(1);
    string querystring = "HasAttachments:true Subject:'ATTACHMENT TEST' Kind:email";
    // Find the first email message in the Inbox that has attachments.
    // This results in a FindItem operation call to EWS.
    FindItemsResults<Item> results = service.FindItems(WellKnownFolderName.Inbox, querystring, view);
    //FindItemsResults<Item> results = service.FindItems(WellKnownFolderName.Inbox, new ItemView(50));
    if (results.TotalCount > 0)
    // looping through all the emails
    for (Int16 iDx = 0; iDx < results.TotalCount-1; iDx++)
    EmailMessage email = results.Items[iDx] as EmailMessage;
    if (email.IsRead == false) {
    // Request all the attachments on the email message. This results in a GetItem operation call to EWS.
    email.Load(new PropertySet(EmailMessageSchema.Attachments));
    foreach (Attachment attachment in email.Attachments)
    if (attachment is FileAttachment)
    FileAttachment fileAttachment = attachment as FileAttachment;
    What I am supposed to be doing is reading all the unread emails in the target inbox (only one Exchange server) and taking the attachments on disk so I can then add them as attachments as new cases on SalesForce.
    Where am I going wrong?
    Also, this line:
    ItemView view = new ItemView(100);
    was:
    ItemView view = new ItemView(1);
    Surely that will only look for one email item, right?

    thanks, do you know why I would be getting an error message like 'The specified object was not found in the store'
    here is my code:
    ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = CertificateValidationCallBack;
    ExchangeService service = new ExchangeService(ExchangeVersion.Exchange2010_SP2);// .Exchange2007_SP1);
    service.Url = new Uri("https://sgexc.bocuk.local/EWS/Exchange.asmx");
    //creates an object that will represent the desired mailbox
    Mailbox mb = new Mailbox(@"[email protected]");
    //creates a folder object that will point to inbox folder
    FolderId fid = new FolderId(WellKnownFolderName.Inbox, mb);
    //this will bind the mailbox you're looking for using your service instance
    Folder inbox = Folder.Bind(service, fid);
    FindItemsResults<Item> findResults = service.FindItems(new FolderId(WellKnownFolderName.Inbox, new Mailbox("[email protected]")),new ItemView(10));
    it's happening on this line:
    Folder inbox = Folder.Bind(service, fid);
    and if I try to use AutoDiscoverURL then I just see my own inbox.

  • Services that need mail server - Use an outside mail server

    Hello,
    I have a mail server somewhere on the internet, and outside my localnetwork.
    Our OSX local server serves few services : DNS (for local dns name) OD, Ical, Ichat, Afp, Mobile access, vpn
    Do they services use mail server locally ?
    Do I need to setup a mail server localy or can I use my outside mail server ?
    If needed
    If I just set on every OD users, a mail as [email protected] and if my internet mail servers has an account for them, how can I define for these users the smtp/pop accounts to allow them to send mail through my net mail server ?
    Do I have to setup a local mail server and accept in my internet mmail server this local mail server to relay mail in ?
    In fact, what I'd like is to keep this internet mail servers, and set all my OD users using this mail server.
    Thanks for your help, and sorry for my poor English. Hope you undurstood

    I don't think you need mail services running to use any of those services. I can't speak for mobile access because I don't use that service. I think iCal and iChat need an email address for each user. You can set that in the info tab for each user in workgroup manager.

    Recently, after a year or more of relatively smooth service, my OS X Server 10.4.11 Mail services has been locking up daily.
    I was finally able to get some information from the log files (I am a noob to this) and saw the following right after my most recent reboot of the server:

    Thanks Alex for the feedback. You are helpful as always!
    It's good to know that the message I am getting from the mail server about the configuration files is only a temporary thing. Although I find it strange that the mail service doesn't know where its config files are since it is specified in the mail server setup.
    I looked at the log files you mentioned and do not see anything that looks like a specific problem with the mail services themselves.
    Recently, however, I have been having recurring problems where my mail server and my Web/Database server have both become unresponsive at nearly the same time even though they are on different class A networks to where I cannot access them via ARD, Server Admin and even SSH. That is usually when my mail server goes offline. I was afraid it was because of that configuration error I was seeing, but think now that the problem could be something else entirely (maybe some kind of network problem or denial of service hacking attack, no idea).
    Thanks again.

    Dear Sir/ Madam,
    My Mail Server Hosted on outlook freely but services for same getting shutting from 31
    july 2014,
    i want to continue the same product please advice me to get the same, i got the mail from outlook is follow
    Dear Outlook.com Customer,
    About a month ago, we let you know that Outlook.com no longer supports new custom domain sign ups. As a current customer, we will continue to support the ability to log in to Outlook.com with your existing custom domain email address, but as of 31 July 2014,
    you will no longer be able to add or remove accounts in your domain.
    Instead, we recommend that administrators who wish to continue managing email addresses in their domain should consider Office 365 – Microsoft's premium online email service. By migrating to Office 365, you will be able to continue managing your custom domains,
    as well as benefit from modern enterprise-class mail, collaboration and communication tools.
    The previous email we sent you contained a complimentary 90-day subscription to Office 365 Small Business Premium for 5 users. This is a reminder that you need to redeem this offer before 15 July 2014.
    You will still be able to log in to Outlook.com with your custom domain during your Office 365 subscription, even if you choose to cancel your Office 365 subscription.
    How to migrate your account
    You can find a step-by-step guide to migrating your account here.
    Yours sincerely,
    The Outlook.com Team
    please help me,

    Hi,
    Yes, as what Roady says, Outlook.com no longer supports new custom domain sign-ups. You can continue to login to Outlook.com with your existing custom domain email addresses. But after July 2014, domain administrators will no longer be able add or remove
    email accounts in your domain.
    Please consider to move to Office 365 to get enhanced features and capabilities for modern enterprise-class mail, collaboration and communications. About how to move your custom domain to Office 365, please refer to:

  • Mail server stops IMAP and POP services, SMTP won't work

    Hello fellow Lion Server users,
    I am trying hard to get my mail server productive. I want to fetch mails from my ISP's IMAP mail server and distribute it to all my devices via my own mail server. Also the mails shall be sent via ISPs SMTP.
    After managing it being able to send and receive email in the way I want I realized that web server was down. Because I want to use the integrated web mail and Wiki server I had to fix that. After restoring to default values in httpd.conf and others I got that problem solved just to realize that I am not able any more to send and receive email. I would be grateful if you could help me out.
    The current status is that Server admin app claims the mail server still running, but POP, IMAP stopped whilst SMTP is running. In my mail.app I can send Emails successfully but they never reach the addressee. Receiving is just not possible at all. The connection doctor in integrated in Mail.app won't find a problem. It claims SMTP and IMAP connections I used before are working.
    I use a dyndns forwarding to my server at home. Lion server is up to date. Port forwarding in the router is enabled (for each port Apple suggests).
    Even in local network (with this very machine) it is not possible to successfully send or receive emails using localhost. My guess is that something went wrong in the configuration files but I don't know where I have to look and for what exactly.
    I also tried a program called MailServe after running into the first problems with the mail server which did so far a good job in configuring of Postfix, Dovecot and Fetchmail but now I am stuck.
    Do you have any hints for me, your help would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

    I think I may have just figured out a part of this puzzle. I have more than just my att account set up in Mail. Even though all of my accounts are setup to use the ATT SMTP server only (with the appropriate ATT login info) I am getting the same rejection notices as everyone else.
    I noticed that in the rejection notice though, that it was saying I was sending mail from my other main account, not my sbcglobal (ATT) account. I thought that was strange since I set up all my accounts to use the SBC (ATT) login info for ATT's SMTP Server. So obviously it is a problem in Mail. Mail is somehow confused and sending some wrong piece of info to the SMTP server. When I changed the sender from my other account to my SBCGLOBAL account, the mail went right out with no other problems.
    So this isn't a solution for those of you who are struggling with only an ATT account, but I think it points to a possible problem within Mail. The answer might be to delete the accounts in Mail and set them back up again. It's looking like Apple might need to make a tweak to Mail to fix this if indeed this is the correct cause. Hope this helps someone.

  • On which port number WDS server will listen & service when installing on server which is also DHCP server?

    hi frineds
    in documents we read when we install WDS on the server which is also DHCP server, we must select this check mark :
    "do not listen on port 67"
    it means we instruct the WDS service not to listen on port UDP 67  to avoid a port conflict between WDS server service and DHCP server service.
    So now on which port number WDS server will listen & service ?
    thanks in advance

    Hi john.s2011,
    If Windows Deployment Services and DHCP are running on the same physical computer, this means that the DHCP server is listening on port 67 and is responsible ensuring authorization.
