Standalone OC4J vs Application Server

1) What is the difference between the Standalone OC4J and the Oracle Application Server (10g)?
2)Under what circumstance do I need/Should use Standalone OC4J?
3)Can I deploy several web applications to the same Standalone OC4J, or must I use the application server in this case?
Thanks to help.
Scott

I assume you are referring to the "OC4J Standalone Distributions" linked to from production Downloads page, option 10.
The General FAQ http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/index.html
will probably provide a lot of answers. Specially items 6-8. (latest faq is for 10.1.2, I believe this has changed a bit over time)
I guess management of OC4J, inside and outside AS environments, is a main difference.
There's also a ton of info if you check MetaLink
Some general type answers to your questions:
1)
There's a world of differences.
Application Server (AS) is a huge collection of products, a software development platform really, for any type of application or "solution area".
This platform, according to Oracle, "... addresses all the challenges that you face as you refine your business processes to become an e-business." Impressive, eh?
OC4J is an important, core component of Oracle AS.
Chapter 1 of Concepts Guide is a good place to start. Docu Library: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_04/index.htm
2)
OC4J stands for Oracle Containers for J2EE, which should give a hint. Standalone is a "stripped" variant, not suited to sit in an AS environment.
But the questions itself I'll better leave for you to answer.
(understand your requirements and read up on the AS product suite and components)
3)
Licensing is a whole other world.
I think your best options is to talk to your customer contact at Oracle local office. Or read the FAQ.

Fredrik

  • Performance advantage to standalone OC4J versus App Server?

If one uses only the JMS server part of the 10g Application Server, would there be any performance advantage to running the standalone version of the OC4J JMS server versus running the entire application server?

Are you saying there is zero overhead associated with passing JMS messages through the application server?
Logic suggests a performance increase when a step is removed...

  • Sun java system application server 8 custom realm lock the admin console up

    Hi:
I implemented a custome realm. After I installed the custom realm to Sun App server 8 PE, I can get into the admin console any more. According to the log, the user is authenticated. However, this user isn't in write group to access the admin console. What would be the user group in a custom realm to access admin console?
In version 7, even you set up custom realm the admin console still not affected by the custom realm. Why is the admin console in version 8 picking up custom realm?
    Thanks.

Previous reply was quite misleading - there is no such thing as default admin password for standalone installation of Application Server. Default values only apply to Application Server installation installed through Creator or NetBeans installer.
Otherwise, you have to specify admin user name and password at installation time. Admin username value is defaulted to "admin" so unless you changed it in your installation that should still apply. You had to enter explicit password values.
If you forgot those, you can either uninstall and reinstall or you can take a look at Troubleshooting Guide for instructions on reseting admin authentication:

They are a Fix Pack higher than you which may explain why it's broken on their server.
Download the Fix Pack for R2 and see if you can duplicate the issue.

  • Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9

I've done several searches and can't find any threads discussing connecting to the Application Server included with Sun's J2EE SDK.
JDeveloper (10.1.3.1.0.3984) has nice choices for creating a connection to various application servers:
    OC4J
    Oracle Application Server 10g
    Weblogic
    Tomcat
    JBoss
But there seems to be no info on how to connect to Sun's SDK server nor Jasper (which I have running on one of my Linux servers).
Any ideas? Can I just "pretend" it is one of those other types of servers?

JDeveloper doesn't have a built-in connection to the Sun server, but you can still deploy applications created in JDeveloper to that server.
The two options that you have are:
    1. Use the sun server Ant tasks and the integrated Ant support in JDeveloper to create an ant build file that does the deployment for you - and run it from within JDeveloper.
    2. Create the EAR/WAR file from JDeveloper and then pick it up from the Sun deployment tools and just deploy it to the server.

  • Oracle 10g - Creating a new Application Server using standalone OC4J 10g

I have some issues in creating a new app. server using standalone oc4j 10g 10.1.3 instance. After I created the app. server instance, I tested the connection and it says connection refused. I used the userid as oc4jadmin and the password as welcome. I am getting a message connection refused. For connection, I used the default hostname "localhost" and I didn't mention anything in the URL path.

    Thanks Steve..
Here is what I am trying to do.. I want to create a new app server instance (i.e.) stand alone oc4j server, where I can deploy my web service and run a test.
    Oracle JDeveloper 10g:
Under Connection Navigator, Application Server --
    1) Right click to 'Create New Application Server Connection'
    2) Connection type as 'Standalone OC4J 10 g 10.1.3',
    3) Username ==> oc4jadmin, Password ==>welcome, checked the Deploy password.
    4) Hostname: localhost RMI Port: 23791
    URL path: <<blank>>
    5) Test Connection ==> getting a error message...
Error while getting remote MBeanServer for url: ormi://localhost:23791/default:

Any input you can provide would be of great help.

  • How Standalone OC4J and the Oracle Application Server linked to each other

    Hi ,
Please let me know what is the relation between a Standalone OC4J and the Oracle Application Server ?
In my application The Oracle Application Server is installed in C drive and there is a Stand alone oC4j .
Please tell me how they are linked to each other .
    Thank you .

It depends on your need and what features and functionality of Oracle Application Server you are interested in. Note that OC4J is a component of Oracle Application Server that can run as a standalone component or within Oracle Application Server. Question #6 in earlier mentioned FAQ document states:
OC4J standalone is J2EE 1.3 compatible (1.4 and 1.5 too in later releases of OC4J) and is able to be used in both development and small scale production environments. OC4J standalone provides its own inbuilt HTTP/S listener to allow clients to execute Web applications that it has deployed. Application deployment and server configuration of OC4J standalone is performed by the manual editing of a simple set of XML files.
For large scale enterprise deployments, the Oracle Application Server product is likely to be more suitable with its comprehensive feature set including Oracle HTTP Server, process monitoring and management capabilities, and its configuration and management console.
So if you are happy with what you see in standalone OC4J and scalability isn't an issue for you, you can stay with standalone OC4J and don't need to move to Oracle Application Server.
PS: If you do decide to use OC4J that's embedded with Oracle Application Server, you can't move your standalone OC4J inside Oracle Application Server. You will have to reconfigure embedded OC4J again (as you might have done with standalone OC4J) and redeploy your applications.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks
    Shail

  • Deploy ADF application to standalone OC4J 11g

    Hi people!
I found some threads into the forums that deal with the subject but I did not find any solution, so I post a new thread...
In fact, I'd like to deploy a "war" on a standalone oc4j 11g.
The application was built with jdev 11g TP4.
I can't use the ADF runtime Installer of jdev, so I have to copy all the files by myself, but the problem is that I do not find the files in jdev11/BC4J/lib/ that I have to copy in oc4j/BC4J/lib...
    There is no adfcm.jar, bc4jdomorcl.jar, etc ...
Is it normal ? Could someone indicate me how to configure the standalone oc4j 11g in order to deploy my "war" ?
    Thanks a lot,
    romain.

    Hi,
    TP4 doesn't have a standalone OC4J.
Try to start embedded oc4j from jdeveloper in standalone mode.
see e.g. Re: Can Jdeveloper TP4 deploy apps to OC4J standalone TP4
BTW: The production release 11g is announced within next week and this release will contain Weblogic Server 10gR3 instead of OC4J.
    JDeveloper 11g release this month?
    regards

  • Failed deployment to standalone oc4j server from JDeveloper 10.1.2

Built a simple application using JHeadStart 10.1.2
I could deploy it when I defined the datasource connections inside the application. When I changed the datasource connections to refur to the jndi lookup values found in data-sources.xml it works only on the oc4j app server embedded into jdeveloper 10.1.2.

ok - this is just wierd - I get an object back from the jndi context. .getClass().getName identifies it as an instance of OrionCMTDataSource, which is a subclass of OrionPooledDataSource which implements javax.sql.DataSource.
I should be able to cast the object directly to a DataSource type, but when I try it throws a ClassCast exception.
If I Cast to an OrionCMTDataSource then to a DataSource it casts correctly... WTF ?!?
oh - and my ADF application is still broken...

  • Multiple applications in standalone OC4J

I’m using Eclipse in XP to deploy applications to the standalone OC4J server. Certain applications use different .jar files from the others. I understand that all jars in the c:\oracle\oc4j10.1.3\j2ee\home\applib are used by all applications. When using a certain application I have to manually move the correct jars into this folder.
Previously I have deployed applications to an OC4J container in Oracle 10g application server running in Unix. Each container has it’s own folder and config files. application.xml is used to list which jar files are to be used with the application.
Is there a way to have an application specify which .jar files it uses in the standalone OC4J during runtime?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hello,
You have a correct understanding of the applib folder, but in 10.1.3.x OC4J provides a better and newer way to manage libraries that you want to share between application: they are "OracleAS Shared Libraries"
You can find more about that there:
    - Creating and Managing Shared Libraries
    - See infrastructure how tos that explains for example how to create an XML or JDBC share lib.
You can deploy your libraries using admin_client.jar and do that in a group, so all the instances will have the same libraries; or simply script the deployment of the library when not part of the same group.

  • Web server type of standalone oc4j needed for SSL Certificate

    Hi,
We have a standalone oc4j 10.1.3 that hosts an application whose many of its pages use https and so we need to buy SSL certificate from any of CAs like Verisign, GeoTrust, etc.. All of these CAs are asking us about the web server type that the standalone OC4J uses. I read the following statement from this url:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32110_01/web.1013/b28950/intro.htm#JICON100
"communications in a standalone environment is provided through the built-in *_OC4J Web server_*, which supports HTTP and HTTPS communications natively without the use of the Oracle HTTP Server"
On all of the SSL certificate systems of above CAs websites, they ask us to choose the web server type from a list of server types but I don't see OC4J web server listed and I am told that it is very important to make sure the web server type is correct otherwise the SSL Certificate that we buy may not be compatible with our web server type.
So, I like to know the exact built in web server type name that goes with Standalone OC4J or one that is closest and for which SSL Certificate is compatible.
Shown below is a list of web server types that I am asked to choose from on Verisign website. The closest to standalone oc4j according to below list is Oracle Wallet Manager but isn't this meant for Oracle Application Server (OAS) and not the standalone OC4J? we are using the java keytool to generate the CSR that we look to sign it via the verisign but again we are not sure about the web server type in the case of standalone OC4J that is not listed below. Please advice and thanks in advance to any of your responses in helping out.

  • Where I can get OC4J as a component of Oracle Application Server

    Hi all !
I installed Oracle Application Server 10g release 2 (10.1.2) and updated Oracle AS Portal to 10.1.4. I want download the Oracle Container for J2EE (OC4J) 10g release 3 (10.1.3.4) as a component of Oracle Application Server (not a Standalone OC4J). Where I can find it ? At the http://edelivery.oracle.com/ I found some of items such as :
+ Oracle Application Server 10g (10.1.3) for Microsoft Windows (32-bit) (DVD) (Part 1 of 6) --> six parts.
    + Oracle Application Server 10g Release 3 (10.1.3.4.0) Companion CD 1 of 3 for Microsoft Windows x86 (32-bit) --> three parts.
But I don't know which of type ?
Pls show me link where I can get it ?

It moved to Where I can get OC4J as a component of Oracle AS 10g release 3 ?

  • Error deploying to standalone OC4J app server

    Hey all,
I created a web app with jdeveloper 10.1.3.3 using OC4J 10.1.3.3 as well. I'm using EJB and session beans to communicate with a database. nothing particularly fancy about it, i just read tables from the db. however, when i try and deploy through jdev to the standalone OC4J i get an error. here's the last part of the deployment log when it fails:
    Deployment Log:
Binding ibmswauth web-module for application ibmswauth to site default-web-site under context root ibmswauth
    Operation failed with error:
[ibmswauth:ibmswauth] - Exception creating EntityManagerFactory using PersistenceProvider class oracle.toplink.essentials.PersistenceProvider for persistence unit WD_WORK.
The only thing in my Persistence.xml file is the <persistence-unit> tag with name "WD_WORK", and in that a <jta-data-source> tag.
Also, it runs fine on the local embedded server, it's only when i try and deploy that it gives this error. I even deployed my app to an EAR file and tried uploading it manually to the app server, still same error.
    any ideas?

If you have a model project that has objects referenced by the view controller/UI project then you need to explicitly include them in the deployment. Unlike in embedded OC4J they wont be automatically included.
Create an ADF library deployment profile in the model project and include the generated library in your UI project war file. You can add this jar to the project Libraries/Classpath then make sure it is included in the WEB-INF/lib Contributors list.
