Standard CJF font without embedding

So I installed all the language packs supported by Acrobat Reader 7. This installed 5 fonts, AdobeSongStd-Light, AdobeMingStd-Light, AdobeMyungjoStd-Medium, KozMinProVI-Regular and KozGoPro-Medium. When I use these font names, everything works just fine.
But I've noticed that other references mention that 7 fonts are installed: HanyangSystemsGothicMedium, HanyangSystemsShinMyeongJoMedium, HeiseiKakuGothicW5, HeiseiMinchoW3, MonotypeHeiMedium, MonotypeSungLight, SinoTypeSongLight. These names indeed seem to recognized as well, although I can't find them anywhere.
Where do these names come from? None of the 12 fonts are mentioned in the PDF reference (1.7, PDF32000-1:2008). When using CJK in PDF's which names should/can be used?
Regards,
Wiebe.

Thanks.
I understand that embedding fonts is more reliable, but it is also much more difficult. My understanding was that these language packs exist, so these fonts don't have to be embedded (to reduce file size)?
I get this idea form sources like http://www.pdf-tools.com/asp/faq.asp?s=&q=58 and many many other sites where these 14 fonts are called "standard". The previous link even mentions that "these fonts should preferably not be embedded in a document...". And also, PDF 32000-1, par 9.6.2.2 mentions "14 Special Fonts". It mentions that these 14 fonts shold be available to conforming readers. Aren't these fonts a at least a bit special? DynamicPDF also claims that the 7 CJK fonts don't need to be embedded: http://www.cete.com/Support/user-manual/DynamicPDFGeneratorForJava/Progrmming/FontsAndText /CJKFonts.htm
When I specify AdobeSong as font, and there is no language pack installed, Acrobat Reader will offer to download it.  I think it won't do this for just any font, but I'm not sure about anything anymore. This font stuff is very complex...
If these 7 fonts are not in any way special, why do all these PDF creator tools refere to these exact same fonts?
I examined many PDF files, and AdobeSong is used a lot without embedding it. Is this really that bad?

Wiebe.

  • Standard 14 fonts embedding

    Hello,
I read several times carefully the table 111 of ISO-32000, and always bear in mind that "Beginning with PDF 1.5, the special treatment given to the standard 14
fonts is deprecated. Conforming writers should represent all fonts using a complete font descriptor. For backwards capability, conforming readers shall still provide the special treatment identified for the standard 14 fonts.".
However, I found a conforming writer that produces 1.6 spec PDFs without embedding the standard fonts. The disturbing point is that it's an Adobe product.
    http://www.adobe.com/security/pdfs/entrust_sample_doc.pdf
Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't see what.
So, here is my question: will my soul burn in hell if I'm guilty of writing a PDF writer that still gives to the standard 14 fonts their special treatment?

ISO 32000-1 PDF does not require that you embed any of those original 14 fonts if you reference them, just that the font descriptor be complete just as it would be for any other font that is used / referenced but not embedded.

  • Rotating text without embedding fonts - how?

No doubt same or similar question was asked and most likely answered but I could not
    find anything that would match...
I want to draw column headers of my ADG vertically. So, I need rotate column text 90 degree
    and adjust position.
Is it true that it can be achieved with embedded font only? If it is true how can it be done for
Unicode code, which includes ranges for Japanese, Chinese, etc characters. The size of
swf is going to be huge. Several sites like this
    http://www.forestandthetrees.com/2009/06/29/rotating-text-without-embedding-fonts/
claims that they have a solution for the problem without embedding fonts.
Note: I am still using Flex 3.3 SDK with no TLF. By the way, do TLF libraries work with
    3.3 SDK.?
    Thanks in advance

Draw your text onto a bitmap image (or take an ImageSnapshot of a Label), then rotate the image.

  • How to have rotated axis labels in charts without embedding fonts?

    Hi all,
I am trying to have slant/rotated axis labels in flex charts to avoid clutter in cases of large number of sample points. It was fairly easy to do this using 'labelRotation' method in AxisRenderer but this involved embedding fonts [ causes my swf to increase in size by atleast a 100KB which in my case is very high ]. My question is.. Can this be done without embedding the fonts? Maybe with the use of labelRenderer? Any alternatives that would solve the purpose without increase in swf size are also most appreciated as I ve been struggling with this for quiet a while.
    Thanks a ton,
    Siva

    Please check LabVIEW\Examples\picture\demos.llb\polar plot demo.vi
But it has no zooming and cursors.
Maybe you can modify that example and use XY plot instead of picture control. I mean for each function plot on the picture, you generate another function to replace it and generate XY data pairs.

  • How to export PDF without embedded fonts?

    Hi,
I'm using CrystalReports with VS2008. I export a report in this way:
    rpt.ExportToDisk(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat, filename);
This works fine except it includes the used fonts. A older version of our export tool used Delphi and the vcl component which did not include the fonts. Including the fonts increase the pdf filesize in my case from 21kb to 70kb. Sounds less but the export creates around 1500 pdf on one day.
Is there a way to export to pdf without embedding the fonts?
    Thanks
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,
No, and it's not all just embedded fonts. After CR 8.5 we converted everything to be UNICODE compliant. So as of CR 9 the size of the files, Printing as well as exporting, increased due to the unicode feature. All characters and bits of the files are now double byte in length with the resulting output being typically 4 or 5 times greater in size ( just a guess ).
Only option would be to export as usual through CR and then use PDF API's to remove the fonts from the output file and resave the PDF.
    Thank you

  • Can I add some UTF-16 characters(4 bytes, like japanese character) in to PDF,without embedding fonts

    Hi all,
I have some 4 bytes japanese characters, when I embedding the MSPMincho fonts to PDF file, the characters displays well, but can it works without embedding this fonts?
    Thanks and Regards

    Try this (not tested):
    import oracle.sql.CharacterSet;
    CharacterSet csDB=CharacterSet.make(CharacterSet.ZHS32GB18030);
    int byteLenDB = csDB.convert("your string").length;
Note, ZHS32GB18030 is currently supported as the client character set only. You should better not define a database with this character set. (See: Database Globalization Support Guide, Table A-9). It looks like we have to clarify this, because DBCA lists ZHS32GB18030 and CREATE DATABASE accepts it.
The DB character set does not seem to be available through any public API (though it is retrieved and stored internally). You have to query the database.

  • Acrobat v8.1.2 Word 2003 Vista x64 embedding fonts without subset?

Acrobat v8.1.2 Word 2003 Vista x64 embedding fonts without subset?
Relative newbie: Every time I create a pdf from a 330 page Word 2003 doc file I end up with a very nice pdf file with all the fonts embedded as 'Embedded Subset' when I was simply hoping for 'Embedded'.
I turned off embedding altogether in the Word Options and it didn't make any difference.
    I have cleared:
Printers / Adobe pdf / fonts / Subset embedded fonts when percentage of characters used is less than...
I also have the pdf Converter Advanced Options / True Type Font set to 'Download As Softfont'
..and the Postscript Output Option set as 'Optimize for Portability'
.."Rely on system fonts only, do not use document fonts." is unchecked
    Any suggestions? tia

Well, I was following instructions on a website on how to create a pdf and a printscreen showed the Acrobat fonts window with just 'Embedded'.
The instructions were a little vague, to be honest, and I'm wondering if I'm missing anything. The pdf is going to a Print on Demand publishing house so I suppose it may well end up in any printer's you care to name in any Country you care to name...

  • Embedding a font without subsetting.

    Hello,
I try to programmatically embed a full font into PDf in order to let the later editing of a document. What I do now is scanning through a font file and writing all the glyphs from the ttf into font stream. Also I create and write CMap using /ToUnicode entry. The size of output pdf is quite big (7 mb vs 17k for the same source file with subsetting), but when I try to edit this document I get a warning: Since the original font is not available a substituted font for editing is used.
Does it mean that I succeded to embed the complete font? Is there any mtehod or tool to verify if the font is completely embedded in a document? Otherwise, what do I lose? Maybe there excist any additional documents/refernces/guidlines for embedding the whole font besides the PDF format spec?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

The ability to edit the text in a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat has NOTHING to do with whether a font is embedded by subset or not,.  Adobe Acrobat will ONLY allow editing of text in a font that is installed on the user's computer.  So even if you did a full embed, if the user didn't have the font installed - it wouldn't matter.

  • Print PDF without embedded fonts (for USPTO)

I need to print PDFs that can be uploaded to the US PTO, and for them to be compatible they must not have any embedded fonts. I am using the Acrobat XI Distiller with the configuration file downloaded directly from the PTO website http://www.uspto.gov/ebc/portal/efs/uspto.joboptions, but the fonts are still being embedded. Is there any way to get the PDF distiller to not embed any fonts?

The .joboptions file that your posting points to very specifically requests that all fonts be embedded, subsetted!!!
Thus, if you are using these joboptions to produce PDF, you are getting exactly what the joboptions call for.
If someplace on the US Patent and Trademark Office website is telling you to not embed fonts and then provides these joboptions, then they are giving you conflicting information!
However, searching that website, I found instructions for PDF file creation such as at <EFS-Web PDF Guidelines> and the attached PDF file from the website.
In fact, the US Patent and Trademark Office absolutely requires that you embed all fonts.

  • How to attach files in email without embedding them

I am using an Imac with lion that is only a few days old.  How can I attach a file to an email without embedding it.  I spoke to apple care and they said after I attach the file to right click on the embedded image and and then click on view as an attachment. I have tried that many times but people still receive the emails with the image embedded.  I switched from a PC and have found that many simple things I used to be able to do on a PC are not so simple on a mac.  I called apple care 5 times about different issues and the geniuses did not know how to resolve the issue.    If this one doesn't get resolved this is going back for a refund.

I haven\'t seen how a mac is easier to use than a pc wrote:
How can I attach a file to an email without embedding it.
Technically, you can't, at least if you are using SMTP to send the email. All except plain text attachments in emails using that standard are actually embedded in the message for transmission, separated by MIME tags that suggest how the receiving email client application (called "mail user agents" in the specs) should handle it.
The content-disposition tag tells the client app if a part was intended to be displayed inline (embedded) or as a separate attachment. Unfortunately, the majority of client apps do not fully follow those suggestions & make their own determination of what to display inline or as separate attachments.
So the best you can do is make sure the message as composed uses the appropriate content-disposition tag & hope that the receiving client app honors it. If you are using Apple's Mail.app try Don Archibald's suggestion, or putting all the attachments at the very end of your message (which may require not using a sig).
But this won't always work since the receiving app may ignore your efforts.

  • PDF standard CJK font confusion

    Hi,
I'm trying to embed Chineese, Japanese en Korean text in my PDF's. To avoid embedding the fonts (or font subsets), I am using the standard PDF fonts form Acrobat's font packs.
I did manage to get the text in, but the width of the character is all wrong. It must have something to do with the CIDSystemInfo or the Encoding, but I can't figure it out.
I am reading the widths from the AdobeSongStd-Light.otf font, and I am using the same widths for calculating the length of the text.
Below are some fragments of my PDF. If required, I can post the PDF as well.
It would be great if someone could point me into the right direction.

  • Changing font without changing size with paragraph stylesheet

I need to change the font of many paragraphs without affecting different text sizes within the paragraphs.
I have a huge document...45,000 phone listings/400 pages. Each business listing (as opposed to residential) has a unique text string after the phone number ( |||B ) which will eventually be deleted. I want to do a Find/Change on that text string and change the entire paragraph it's in to a different font without impacting the different font sizes within the paragraph. But when I try to set parameters for the stylesheet, I can't just change the font, I have to change the size also.
Using a character stylesheet won't work, as it would only change the font of the text string itself.
Is this impossible using style sheets? Can it be done with a script? I've never used InDesign scripts so I'd need detailed instructions if that's the answer. Or am I doomed to manually change the font on 3,100 paragraphs in my document?
Thanks to all you keeners out there for any help you can offer.
    Patti

    P Spier wrote:
    I'm a little confused.
Do you currently have paragraph styles defined? I would probably approach this by defining a paragraph style for the main listings. You can do that by selecting some type and holding the Alt (Opt) key while clicking the new style icon on the panel, or by selecting new style from the panel menu. That style should be what is applied to all the text to start.
Define a second style for the business listings. You can base this on the first style, and change only the font. You don't need to enter a new size unless you wish to do so. Any attributes you don't change in the new style definition will be preserved, and will change to match the base style if you edit it.
Do your find/change and in the change format dialog specify the new paragraph style, but leave the actual change field blank. This can be done a plain text search. You will need two passes, one to format the paragraphs, and one (with the change format field cleared) to remove the suffix.
A GREP expression would probably work, too, but my GREP is rudimentary and I can't seem to find an expression to find |||B -- my attempt  was (.)|||B$ which I thought would find any character followed by |||B at the end of the paragraph, and I would replace with $1 to preserve the character before and delete the suffix at the same time as changing the format, but it's picking up all sorts of stuff in the middle of the paragraph, so I suspect the pipes have a special meaning.
Character styles should be used to change only things that are special and need to be different from the standard paragraph definition, not for formatting the entire paragraph.
Yes, I have paragraph styles defined. I used them, along with a bunch of other unique text strings, to create separate paragraphs of each type of info in each listing, and then style them. I then used the same search strings to remove the paragraph breaks (and the search strings) to put the listings back to together into a single paragraph (but you have to break the link to the style before you remove paragraph breaks or your text will reformat itself back to the style on the previous paragraph.
The main problem is that I neglected to make a special find/change on the address and phone number to make them bold. Now I have 48,000 paragraphs (listings) with nothing but that |||B search string at the end of each of the business listings. And it took me two full work days just to get to this point, so I really don't want to go back to square one at this point.
I know this is hard to describe and understand. I really appreciate your help though!!

  • Exporting OMF without embeded media?

Does anyone know if there is a way to export an OMF file from FCP which does not contain embeded audio media and only data referring to the original source media?
    Thanks for any pointers,
    Daniel

I've checked out the automaticduck website, and it only seems to be able to export OMF with embeded media. If anybody knows if it can in practice perform the function of exporting session data as OMF (without embeded audio media), please let me know.
If not, it's not a bad idea for somebody to implement. Using OMFs in this manner is standard practice in the film industry.
Sound editors don't have receive gigs of audio data every time there is a change in the edit. All they need is a copy of all the source audio files once, then session data OMFs are sent to them as changes occur (via e-mail cause their small). It's very practical, saves a lot of time and HD space.

  • Fonts not embedding when "save as" pdf

Version: Photoshop CS4 64 bit on Windows Vista 64.
Issue: fonts not getting embedded during conversion to pdf.
I am attempting to save files for commercial printing in Photoshop pdf format (file-save as-pdf). In the past, using previous versions of Photoshop, the fonts have always been embedded in the pdf document when I choose the "Press Quality" pdf preset. However, now, even when I simplify my Photoshop source file down to the most basic level (one non-background layer with one line of type using a font I KNOW has successfully embedded before) the resulting pdf reports NO embedded fonts (no fonts at all, actually) and when sized up a great deal in Acrobat Pro shows pixelation as though the type was converted to a graphic. If I open the resulting pdf file in Photoshop the text is still editable though...
I have Photoshop files that were built using a previous version of Photoshop (CS2). When I open these in Photoshop CS4 and save as pdf the fonts are embedded just as they always were so the problem lies not with the CS4 version of Photoshop itself but rather with NEW files created by it. It seems that any NEW files I create using Photoshop CS4 wil not embed their fonts when saved as pdfs.
    Help !!?!! (example file attached)

Good points. To test that out I tried substituting different non-commercial fonts (Arial, Tahoma, Times, etc.) and then saving as a pdf. No matter what fonts I try they don't get embedded. So that would seem to rule out the idea that Photoshop CS4 is now restricting the embedding of fonts to non-commercial ones.
I have poured through the save-as-pdf options in GREAT detail - have tried many various options and don't see any settings that have either made a difference or seem relevant. According to Adobe documentation anytime you select "Press Quality" as the preset the fonts should automatically be embedded.
The really odd thing is, if I take a psd file that was originally created using a previous version of Photoshop, delete all the layers and then create one single line type layer so that it is identical in every way to my CS4 test file, any font I select gets embedded when I convert that file to pdf - same exact pdf preset - all file settings the same - everything! - except that it was originally created using a previous Photoshop version.
    Does that make ANY sense??
