Standard definition on Apple TV

Hey everyone!  I just bought an Apple TV and I love it.  My only concern is that when I try to view previously purchased TV shows it only shows the High Definition ones.  It does take time for the HD ones to load up and I am fine using SD.  Is there a way that I can only watch SD?
Thanks!
Christina

First of all, good purchase!
Second: Yes! You absolutely can change this!  Go to the far right end of your Apple TV menu where you'll find your Settings menu.
From there you should select 'General' then 'iTunes Store'.  The second option from top to bottom will allow you to toggle between HD and SD.
Hope this helps

  • Can I use apple tv on a standard definition tv?

I have a standard definition TV at my home and would love to use Apple TV to play movies, music, etc. on this TV in my room via my WIFI connection
but was not sure if I could do that since my TV is not a HD TV.
Can I still use Apple TV and have all of the functions work properly on my standard definition TV?

    No.
AppleTV2 only has HDMI video output - while you might find some convoluted method of using adapters to produce a lower quality image on an SD set over analogue it won't be cheap.
AppleTv has always ben designed for 16:9 TV sets, you may have an SD one but it won't have the necessary digital connections.

  • Please recommend a tapeless camcorder to use with Apple iMovie5, standard definition 4:3.

I'm still using Apple iMovie5 and a Power PC to make standard definition 4:3
aspect ratio DVD's for industrial training purposes. Historically, I've used
miniDV camcorders to aquire the raw content. I want to go tapeless, but still keep
everything else the same. Any specific suggestions for camcorders that aquire in
SD 4:3 with files compatible with iMovie5 (like .mov files)?? In other words, I
need to replace the miniDV capture process and go with something that easily
imports into iMovie 5, std def, with 4:3.  Help please!!!
Thanks! Also, I do not need a real high end camera.  Something under $600 preferable.

  • Ordering standard definition movies with Apple TV 2.

I just upgraded to the second generation Apple TV. I prefer to purchase standard definition movies but do not see that as an option with this unit. Is there a setting change I can make to bring this option up? In the meantime I went back to my old AppleTV!

Go to General > iTunes Store and change the option for "video resolution " to "standard defiition."

You can in fact buy what you want, no need to go with Apple TV
To connect (wirelessly) your Mac to the HDMI on the TV:
They range from $100 on up.

  • Working with Canon 5D standard definition video

    I'm facing an odd situation.
Just started editing a documentary shot with a Canon 5D camera. The picture looks great. The only thing is, the cameraman decided that this is a video and he didn't need to shoot HD! I don't know why he thought that, since the main reason people use the Canon 5D is to get a full HD frame. Anyhow, I've been presented now with hours of brilliant interviews that can't be redone, all with a frame size of 640x480 running at 25 frames per second. I need to figure out how to edit these and create a broadcast master at the end. 25fps is not the issue, it's the frame size and video compression that I need to deal with.
The Canon 5D generates Quicktime files with an H.264/Mpeg4 compression. I need to convert these files to a format better suited to editing and mastering for broadcast. An HD master is, of course, impossible, but 640x480 is even smaller than the standard 720x576 frame size that one gets on regular standard definition PAL video.
I found a transcoding plugin for the Canon 5D, but it only works with files shot in the HD format, which get converted to Apple ProRes in the FCP's 'log and transfer' window. I've been unable to find any instructions on how to work with standard definition files.
I imported the native H.264 files into the FCP, and found, of course, that I can play the video quite smoothly as it is. There's even a timeline setting that allows me to edit without rendering. But I'm afraid that if I work with the native files, I won't be able to master them to tape at the end.
Any pointers on how best to go about this would be most useful!

Try using Compressor to convert to the standard PAL frame size using DV50. Good luck and whip the cameraperson.

  • Hi I just updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I write DVD's using Final Cut Pro, creating a DVD that plays HD and Standard Definition on one disk. My problem is when I used load the disk on my G5 it would ask if you want High Definition or Standar

Hi I just updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
I write DVD's using Final Cut Pro, creating a DVD that plays HD and Standard Definition on one disk.
My problem is when I used load the disk on my G5 it would ask if you want High Definition or Standard Definition, now it just defaults to Standard Definition.(I'm using Apple's DVD Player)
    Can I fix this problem?

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

  • Converting the videos (from Vixia HF M40) to standard definition on a Mac (10.6 OS X)

How do you convert the videos (from Vixia HF M40) to standard definition, for the Mac computers (10.6 OS X)?

    Hi venetiakelley!
    Thank you for posting.
Canon does not make conversion software, but there are 3rd party applications available that do convert video files from one format to another.  You can try doing an internet search for applications that will convert from one format to another.
However, there should not be a need to convert the video to a standard definition format to be able to view it on your Mac.  Even Apple's own iMovie should support the files that come from the VIXIA HF M40 depending on the version you have installed.  If you are using iMovie and experiencing some trouble opening the files, I recommend that you contact Apple directly for further assistance with iMovie.  They may have some more information about the trouble you are experiencing.

  • Standard Definition vs. High Definition Video on Mobile Me

Can anyone tell me whether a video shot with a high definition camcorder, then edited in imovie 09 and shared to mobile me via IM 09 look better when played on mobile me than one shot with a standard definition camcorder?
I have a video shot by a friend in standard def, edited in IM 09 and embedded on a web page. Had it been shot with a high def, would the quality on the web be better than what is seen here?:

What codec is used for MobilMe. The Apple site only talks about Photos on MobilMe!
    H.264
Does MobileMe recompress your uploaded video like the other services?
No it is h.264. Not converted to Flash like YouTube. Plays in QuickTime Player.
Can those with Windows view with Firefox and/or IE?
Yes, but they are prompted to download QuickTime player if they don't already have it
What is the frame-size for Medium and Large?
    Large - 960x540 (in widescreen)
    Large - 720x540 (4:3)
    Medium - 640x360 (in widescreen)
    Medium - 640x480 (4:3)
What is maximum the frame-rate for Medium and Large?
I have never seen a maximum
Why would one need to download since it is streaming video?
It takes a long time to stream. I have found that if I provide the option to download, a lot of people think something is wrong and they try to download it rather than waiting for it to start streaming. People expect streaming video to start right away. Most will not wait 5 minutes.
Downloading takes a long time, too.

  • HT1657 Can I transfer a standard definition rental between two computers with the same account?

So, I rented a movie on my work computer and haven't had time to watch it just yet and it's expiring in 4 days. So, naturally, reading the documentation here that says the following:
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
I moved the rental to my MacBook Pro, expecting to be able to watch it there. However, when I add it to my iTunes library on my MBP (with the same iTunes account), I get an error saying that it isn't authorized to play the content.
What's the deal? Am I missing something, or doesn't it seem like I should be able to transfer it between computers? Do I need to delete the one off my work computer first?

Sorry but no. Rentals cannot be transferred from one computer to another. As the instructions said, you can only move a rental from a computer to a iOS-based device or back from that device to the computer on which the rental was first downloaded.
    Regards.

  • Preserving Standard Definition Anamorphic Settings in iDVD

I shot two simple, pockets-up static interviews with a Sony PD-150 set to record in anamorphic [16:9] v. standard definition [4:3].
Initially I had problems getting Final Cut Express 4.0 to recognize the PD-150. Then I couldn't import the video from the PD-150 to FCE 4.0 in any other format except 4:3... which made the footage look like I'd interviewed a couple of cone-heads.
So I loaded Final Cut Express 1.0 on the Macbook Pro. The software regognized the PD-150 right away, and I was able import the video into FCE 1.0 in anamorphic format...
But now I can't get iDVD to import the edited video in anything but the cursed 4:3 format, and I'm back to a product that really, really doesn't look right.
    Help?

This approach might work .... Take a look here if you haven't already:

  • HT5070 can I still purchase tv episodes in iTunes in standard definition?

They have always been cheaper and I prefer them, but I can't figure out how to access them.  The screen keeps offering me only high definition versions. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Yes, you should still be able to purchase standard definition movies, I can. Not all movies are available in all resolutions, have you tried checking a few movies.

  • Standard definition - videos

I would like to know if standard definition is 720p or lower.  I just download an free movie from itunes using the digital copy code and would like to know SD if it is 720p.
    I know HD is 720p or 1080p.
    Thanks

When "Prefer Standard-definition Videos" is enabled, correct it only copies SD videos. However you don't need this enabled if you have purchased all SD videos from iTunes or recorded DVR to Mac/PC and used a convertor to transfer to iPhone.
Apple sells HD videos in a separate category for those not wanting to purchase 3GB HD movies or 1.5GB HDTV shows (variance in time length).

  • On 1st iTouch, how do I download the cheaper standard definition TV shows directly to my iTouch?

On first generation iTouch, how do I download the cheaper standard definition TV shows directly to my iTouch? This used to work on earlier versions of iTouch, now the "Also available in standard definition..." link does not work when I click it. The only way I can figure out how to do this is to go to my iMAC, select SD download it and then connect up my iTouch and sync it in iTunes. My software version on this 1st generation iTouch is 3.1.3.

I think I may not have explained the problem correctly . The duplicate music is on my Itouch.  I do not have any duplicate music on my Itunes.   I did do as you instructed yesterday and there was none.  I have a feeling this has to do with the Cloud or some other new feature of OS5.  Its weird too because I did just buy a new album off of Itunes and it did not happen.  Just with the music I had purchased before I downloaded OS5.  If i have to, I'll make an appointment at the Apple store, I just don't have time to do it this week.  I really appreciate your help tho!
