Standard Dvd Player no Longer Works

All of a sudden my computer has stopped recognizing dvd's. The drive accepts them, I hear it spinning, but no icons appear. This is true for both movies and software. it still takes audio cd's, but dvd's have stopped working. any thoughts?

Yes go to your Apple and shut down..
Wait 4 or 5 minutes,,
Restart computer..Go to Mac HD open it go to Applications..click on it and scroll down to DVD Player, Click it and when it opens to the Black Screen..
Do Not Touch Anything.. Put your Commercial DVD Movie in and wait.. It will take a minute to read the encryption and security on the DVD and it should start playing your Movie....Cheers....Don

  • Aperture and DVD Player no longer work with NVIDIA 330M, help!

I recently got my computer back from the Apple Store, had the display switched because the glass kept falling off.
Anyways, since getting it back, I noticed DVD Player doesn't work anymore, it gives me:
    There was an initialization error
A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]
And when I try to start Aperture 3.3:
    Error
The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture.
    I have a mid-2010 MBP i5 2.4Ghz with 8GB memory, running OSX 10.7.4.
    Things i have tried:
    Reset PRAM
    Reset SMC
Boot into recovery mode and fix permissions
    Boot into 32 bit kernel
    force fsck
Create new user and try from that account
Also my video conference software, Jabber gives an error and quits too.  Its something with the video.
Switching to Intel HD video, everything works fine.  Only with the NVIDIA 330M do I get this error.
Does anyone have any idea what this may be or what I could try?

I'm having exactly the same problem. Additionally, the DVDs I make aren't recognized by other Macs I've tried. All the Preferences are set correctly.
My dvd player no longer reads commercial movies or a
dvd project I just burned with it. Disks no longer

got to dvd player and manually press play it reads
    "not Permitted" for both.
The burner does work in as I played the dvd in my
    home dvd player.

  • IMac DVD player no longer working

    Hi,
    I have Mac OS X version 10.6.8
My iMac is not playing DVDs anymore. When I insert a DVD a pop-up window appears saying: "You inserted a blank DVD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click ignore." The DVD I inserted isn't blank and it says the same thing when I try other DVDs.
From the action menu there is: Open Finder, Open iDVD, Open iTunes, Open Disk Utility. I have tried to open with iDVD and it didn't work. I tried to click on Open Finder and then the DVD shows up on the dektop but it is blank, nothing happens when I click into it the picture of the DVD.
I think I have caused this to happen by accidentally deleting something in the applications folder. Any ideas of how I can reinstall the software that runs DVDs on the iMac?
When I used to insert a DVD I would get the picture of the DVD on the desktop and I would be able to see it on "Front Row" where all the entertainment is.
    Thanks!

  • Dvd player no longer works, says it needs 10.7

Just tried to run DVD player on my 10.6.8 Macbook Pro but it says it requires 10.7 or later. I can't upgrade to Lion since it drops support for older applications using PowerPC code. Who in Apple decided to update applications on 10.6 so they will no longer run?

My version on 10.6.8 is 5.5 last modified on 6/14/2011. I also have a newer iMac that I upgraded to 10.7 last month. Was not pleased to learn that several of my applications using older PowerPC code no longer worked so I elected not to upgrade my MacBook for now.
I pulled version 5.4 of DVD Player off of my Time Machine backup disk and it works fine. Thanks for the lead.
Now the question is how did my DVD Player get updated to version 5.5 on my 10.6.8 system? Seems like Apple has a bug in their update system.

  • DVD player no longer works on my Satellite C50

It was working fine but now doesn't even reognize when a disk has been plaed in the drive.

Hmm looks like the laser lens doesnt read the data from the disk.
Try to clean the laser lens using cotton wool tip and alcohol fluid
In case of dirty lens, this should help to get the disks working again but be very careful while cleaning the lens!

  • Dvd player does not work after Leopard upgrade

I installed Leopard, had to upgrade because my printer died and no printers now work with Tiger.  Since the upgrade, my DVD player does not work.  I have problems burning some cd's too.  Is this a known issue?  What is the fix?

I have read a couple of complaints like that, but not sure it's widespread.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
If that does NOT help, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
If that does NOT help then I suspect the optical drive or media itself, or possibly just needs a cleaning CD run on it.

  • DVD player doesn't work correctly

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop. It's pretty new - bought in the summer. The operating system is Windows Vista.
I have a problem with my DVD player. It often just stops working. It sometimes works after I restart the computer, but for short periods of time. When it doesn't work, it doesn't eject when I click the eject button or when I go to My Computer and choose eject from there. In addition, if there's a disk in it, it's not recognized - when I go to My Computer and double click, it says "Please insert a disk."
However, when I click the eject button on the player, an orange light shows up for a second. It doesn't make any sound, though.
When it works and I burn a DVD, the sound it makes isn't continuous which shows that it doesn't work continuously(right?). I mean, it burns and the burning process seems to be getting somewhere and then the sound stops for a few seconds and the bar stops and then they both continue. Maybe this is normal, I don't really know.
I tried Safe Mode to see if it works, but the result is the same.
I also opened the Device Manager and checked if there's an update, but there's none.
I tried System Restore too, but it didn't work.
Somehow, I think the problem is with the driver because the orange light appears when I click the eject button, but I don't know anything about DVD players, so I'm not sure about anything.
I really don't want to reinstall Windows because firstly, the process of first backing up everything, then waiting for it to reinstall and then get everything on there again (and installing the millions of programs I'm using again) is just stupid, takes to long and it usually doesn't solve problems anyway. Reinstalling is one of my last options, together with taking it to the repair people. Right now, I really need my laptop every day so if there's no solution, it might take a while before I find time to take it there. Thanks to everyone that replies.

I think I found out something new today. I had the same problem again, but the DVD player wouldn't work even after I restarted several times and went into Safe Mode. Accidentally, though, when I wanted to restart the last time, I clicked the hibernate button and when I turned the laptop on again, the DVD player worked. It might just be a coincidence, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

  • Are there glitches in iMovie or iDVD that would create problems with viewing a finished project on a standard dvd player?

Everytime I render a new project in iMovie and share it with iDVD to produce a video, there always seems to be glitches in the finished project.  I have gone back and tried to recreate the slideshow, but have not had a whole lot of luck.  I am wondering if I need to delete the iMovie and iDVD applications from the computer???  If I do that will it fix my problem or will I even be able to redownload the programs without having to pay for them again?  I have spent more time and $$$ trying to get a viewable disc to burn and am ready to get rid of the computer altogether.  Hopefully that will not have to happen, but this is a constant issue that I go through everytime I work on a project.  Any suggestions???

    Hi
    Yes and No.
There are Bugs and ways to make better or Worse DVDs - see if this can help.
There are two "Bugs" (or at least one)
    • In iDVD - do not go back to video editing program - if You got Chapters set in Your movie - if You try - then now back in iDVD it will ask You to up-date ==> all Chapters will point to Chapter one. Medicine - create a brand new iDVD Project.
    • There MUST NOT BE any Chapter mark set in very beginning of the Movie - or in any transition or within 2 seconds from them.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser ( AND AS MEDIUM - not HD etc as DVD then will suffer in quality ) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
    • and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
    • and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
    • Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
    • Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
    • Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

I installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 on MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.5. Now my DVD player will not work. Any ideas?

    • Material used: Video-Codec and Photo file format and Audio file format - matters too. I use
    - Video - StreamingDV .dv or AIC
    - Photos as .jpg (only)
    - Audio as .aiff 16bit 44.1kHz or 48kHz (ONLY - never .mp3 or directly from iTunes - all converted to .aiff first)
With this I do not mean any setting in iDVD - BUT the raw material used in iMovie / FinalCut / Avid 100 / Adobe Premiere
As this usually matters - later in iDVD
How did You Export from Video-editing program used ? I prefer
    • iMovie HD6 - just drop the movie project icon (NOT iMovie Icon - the PROJECT one) over into iDVD big menu window (avoiding - drop-zones as they are for other tasks)
    • iMovie'08 to '11 - Share to MEDIA BROWSER - AND AS MEDIUM - not HD or other resolution as iDVD does a bad downscaling job.
    • iMovie'13 (version 10.0.x) - Share as 480p - Import this into iDVD
    • FinalCut (Pro or Express) - Export as QuickTime .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - IMPORTANT
    • Adobe Premiere - I don't know - not tested Yet
    • Avid 100 - I don't know - not tested Yet
Cleaning the DVD-burner - If it Burns DVDs OK then that's may be not the problem - But if it only burns CDs OK then either the DVD-burning-laser is dirty or broken.
It is very easy to kill this DVD-laser as it over-heats if one burns several DVDs in a row. I only burn three at a time - then let it cool down for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs.

My solution to this is to remove Toshiba DVD player and install VLC player. You can get it for free.
It can read all video formats and you don't need some additional codecs.
