Standard Macbook Keyboard Shortcuts Not Functioning

I have a Macbook running 10.5.7.
For some time, I have been unable to use any standard keyboard shortcuts such as CMD-N to open a new finder window etc.
I have re-installed the MAC OS X software from clean, reset the defaults for keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences but nothing works. I don't believe it's the keyboard as I have tried holding the option key while booting and do get the screen offering which drive to boot from.
Every now and then, following a "Restore Defaults" in keyboard shortcuts, they will function but following a re-start, they are no-go again.
This applies to all shortcuts such as CMD-SHIFT-4 to grab a screen shot. Simply no keyboard shortcuts work at all.
Any ideas?

I don't have an answer, but I just experienced the same problem. Suddenly my copy/paste shortcut doesn't work. I hope someone provides an answer soon!

OK, I fixed the problem by doing a SMC (System Management Controller) reset as follows:
1. Powered off my MacBook and removed everything connected except for the power chord.
2. When powered off, I held "Shift" + "ctrl" + "Option" + "Power button" for 5 seconds or so until the little light on the front started to blink rapidly.
3. Powered up my Mac, which took a little longer than usual to start and tested the "missing" keys which now works perfectly again.
Just added another couple of years usage with my aging mac :-)

I would like to assign keyboard shortcuts for functions inide the paragraph styles panel in PS CS6.
It seems that no option to do this is exposed - ist this correct?

That's an interesting approach and it made me aware about menu item insertation - but unfortunately none of the suggested works.
Clear overrides when executed by button can work both on selections of text and on complete text blocks, the recorded version of
pressing the button disregards that there's a selection and therefore only works globally. The menu insertation method can not deal
with existing selections either - it's entry is greyed out in the actions panel when portions of the text are selected.

Bug in the software. In PS CS6, when using the keys to access different tool
they would cycle through the key accessed. Example: If you were in the
eraser and then hit the B key you would get the brush. You could hit the B key
again and get one of the other brushes listed. I used this feature to program
my grip pen to move between the brush and the mixer brush just by using the B key.
In PSCC you can hit the B key from another tool and get whatever brush you
accessed last BUT when you hit the B key again it DOES NOT cycle through.
Therefore the keys programed in preferences do not go beyond one stroke of any
key when it should be able to change for four tools. It is a major loss of functionality
of the tools. The brush tool is not the only tool that has that problem.
Is this in the works to be fixed? Or is there another solution?

If I'm not mistaken, Version 3.5.6907.233 is the latest stable release of Communicator 2007 R2. Please correct me if I'm wrong and I will work with the relevant people to have a newer release of the application installed (if possible).
As for the Uninstallation of McAfee, this is a highly unlikely troubleshooting method as any IT Administrator allowing a corporate computer running without any sort of security software on a corporate network will most likely lose their job and face severe
repercussions. I would understand if this was for home use but this is not. Additionally, I would imagine that if this was a Known Issue with Microsoft, there would be a more indepth KB article pointing to McAfee as the culprit.
Can you clarify if any of the work we're doing on this has any relation with Microsoft or if this is just best effort support?

I had this problem too but using Windows 7. I tried resetting, renaming the shortcuts, swearing loudly, none of it worked. I found out it was a totally unrelated program, Xfinity Protection Suite, that was the culprit. My virus protection program added it as an 'upgrade.' AFter I uninstalled it everything was back to normal. Have you installed anything new onto your computer lately that could be interfering?

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
    Highlight Internal Speakers
    Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2. Remove the headphone.
    If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
    in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
    Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

Safari keyboard shortcut not working right.
I have 6 website in favourite bookmark. When press cmd + 1 should load 1st website in favourite folder. Nothing happen. Same cmd + 2, cmd + 3 etc.
Now cmd + 1 keep add ':)' smiley text emotion instead.
I have reset keyboard shortcut default in System Preference Keyboard but nothing change.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

I've just updated safari on snow leopard and my customized keyboard shortcut: go to next/previous panel (ctrl -> and ctrl <-) don't work anymore even if i set them in my system preferences

That all depends on whether any of the soup made it past the keyboard to the motherboard. If it did then the MB may be toast.
Go to ifixit.com and look up your MBA. If you can remove the keyboard, rinse it very thoroughly with distilled water (distilled water is non-conductive) followed by a rinse with pure isopropyl alcohol (not the 70% stuff you can get in a drugstore) to absorb the water. Let it dry for a few days in a desiccant (put it in a porous bag (pillow case or similar) and add the desiccant over and around it and then place that in an airtight container. The more desiccant, the better.) A good desiccant is clay cat litter, baked in an oven for a few hours @ 300+ °F. Afterwards, cross your fingers and plug it in.
Careful, the alcohol is flammable.

Keyframe keyboard shortcut not working

Apologies for the really noob question but I’m new the AE and for the life of me trying I can’t get any Functions keys to perform their commands and it’s driving me nuts having to go through menus to do simple things like add a keyframe.
So far I’ve tried:
• check/uncheck the standard function box on keyboard prefs
• Unchecked Exposé
• Turning off itunes so it doesn’t conflict with AE
• Adding my own keyboard shortcut (which won’t work anyway because the menu description changes for each type of keyframe)
Please help – this is driving me insane!

I’m not sure what you mean...
Lets say I have a document open and I want to scale an object – I first have to ‘Add Scale Keyframe’ if I want to do this I have to go to the menu every time rather than just press the F9 key. no combinations of F9+shift +cntrl +cmd work.
I think this is a conflict between the way a Macs function keys are set by default and what AE wants to use them for and I just can’t resolve it. The preferences I was referring to was the Mac System prefs.

ITunes Keyboard shortcuts not working

I have installed 10.1.1 iTunes. My keyboard shortcuts are not working. For example when I press F10 to mute, spaces becomes enabled though that is not checked to work in Preferences. None of my volume controls will work correctly. Any ideas as to what to check?

Eureka...fixed! Somehow under Keyboard the box for Use all keys as standard function keys was checked. Unchecking it fixed the issue!

Force Quit keyboard shortcut not working

The Option-Command-Escape shortcut does not work for me. I can keep it pressed as long as I like, but nothing happens. If I choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, the 'Force Quit Applications' dialog comes up, and everything works fine. So it's just the keyboard shortcut.
It used to work, but at some point in the past it broke. I don't know when, or whether it's the result of installing an OS update.
I'm using the standard Apple keyboard that came with the machine. Needless to say, the individual keys (Option, Command, Escape) all function as they should.
Has anyone seen anything like this, and maybe solved the issue?

Application Keyboard Shortcuts not working in Text Edit

Under System Preferences (Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Application Keyboard Shortcuts -> All Applications), I changed some basic keyboard shortcuts (Copy, Paste, etc.) to use the ctrl key instead of the command key. These shortcuts seem to work well in the basic applications I use (MS Office, Firefox, etc.)
However, they do not work in TextEdit. I did verify that the Menu name in I entered in System Preferences matches exactly the way it appears in TextEdit.
Anyone else have the same problem? Any ideas on how to resolve it? I would very much like this fixed since my switching between Windows (in Parallels) and Mac OS X is seamless except for the fact that I have to remember different keyboard shortcuts in each OS. Thanks in advance!
