Standard or customise imac

i am thinking of getting the imac 27" and wondered would it be better to customise it or keep the standard spec.
standard at the moment is:
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5
i use my computer for internet, email, music, watching videos including 1080p, photos including basic editing etc.
will i notice a difference upgrading to i7 3.5ghz and 1tb fusion drive or would it be pointless.
my current pc is:
asus m4a87td
amd 6 core 1055t 2.8
4gb ddr3 1300
geforce gtx 460
1tb HDD and 256gb SSD
23" samsung lcd monitor (HDMI)
windows 8.1

IMO, the standard should meet your needs. You're not doing any heavy movie or music editing or composing.

I should be able to download it onto two computers from what I understand, but when I insert the disk for download, there is no install.app on the disk any longer. I only see set-up.exe (which is for windows). How can I get the programs downloaded onto my iMac?

    Hi,
yes offcource you have to activate debugger for script ....but additionally
    1. The point in the program where your script is triggered put an external breakpoint.
    2. Before giving the Print Preview or whichever button put '/h'
    3. After putting /h and pressing the button it goes in Debug mode then you can F8 and it will reach the point where you have set the Breakpoint or External breakpoint.

  • PH 7 suite updating to CS2 standard and getting imac intel core duo

I really love my Adobe programs. I am going to get an new Intel imac 20" and was wondering if I should update my Photshop 7 to CS2 (standard) or get a full version of CS2 to install on the new mac. I have seen some problems with the programs from old to new imacs. Would the update be necessary?
    G4 1ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I would wait until next year to upgrade. The Universal binary that comes out next year will be the upgrade from CS2 to CS3 or whatever Adobe ends up calling it, especially if it integrates the former Macromedia products into the suite. It will definitely be an update that you will have to buy.
You will need to check with Adobe on what this upgrade will cost you. You are currently to upgrades behind, so the next one will make three. You may have to pay full price.

You can just install iPhoto or the other iApps with a custom install. The iApps are usually on the OS X Install Disk 1:

  • How to switch licensed for "ADOBE DESIGN STANDARD" from iMac to Macbook Pro?

I am currently licensed for "ADOBE DESIGN STANDARD" on an iMac. I have a new MacBook Pro and want to use that instead of the iMac. Do i need to get a new license key? or ??
I know i can download an "eval" copy on the laptop, but how do i switch license keys? i'm not even sure i still have the (valid) license key for the iMac...can i request another??

As long as you are staying within the same general platform (PC vs Mac) you do not need to change licensing.  You are allowed to have two activated installations with your license, so you should be able to install on the new machine without having to worry about the older one at all (unless you ever want to free up the second activation for yet another machine).  As you mentioned, you can download the trial version and use the serial number from your purchase to activate it to full use.
If you registered your software with Adobe, the serial number should be available via your Adobe account online.  If you didn't register it then you will at least understand why it pays to do so.
IF you end up needing to resolve any issues with activating the product on the new machine you will need to contact Adobe Support directly.  Here are some links to help make contact:

  • Directv HD signal via component into a 24" iMac help?

    Greetings,
PC user here who is attempting to convert to Mac. I currently have a Dell 17" Media Monitor and an XPS tower. I have both an office and home theater in my basement. So I ran a component cable from my Directv reciever 30' or so into my Dell monitor via component in. This allows me to watch an HD Directv signal in picture in picture while I work on my home office PC. I also have a VGA cable going out of the Dell Monitor about 40' or so to my Marantz projector so that I can watch my PC source on my 10' home theater fixed screen.
Now to my problem. I need to use some Mac apps for work, prefer the OS and want to switch to Mac in my home office. I am very interested in buying the 24" iMac. After a discussion with Mac Sales it seems clear that I can use an Apple mini DVI to VGA adapter to send the iMac source via VGA cable to my home theater projecter. What is unclear to me is how in the world to convert my Directv signal via component cable into the iMac for display? Mind you I don't want to edit the video or store it or burn it or send it to friends or pirate it in any way - so I don't think I need a video capture card. I just want to be able to view the signal and turn the iMac into a dumb monitor in this instance.
Second question. If I can somehow display an HD Directv signal on the iMac ( I know there is a solution for standard def and terrestrial HD signals) via component, surely the video card that comes standard in the iMac - the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB of GDDR3 memory will allow me to view not just the iMac desktop, but any Directv signal that is now viewable on the iMac (presumably in a window or picture in picture)???
I spoke with sales reps at both AJA and Black Majic. they both offer costly solutions or cheaper video card solutions that would allow component in, but only cards that would install in a tower such as the Mac Pro. I would strongly prefer an iMac based solution as it is the perfect Mac for my home office needs and the Mac Pro is overkill.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,
    Illiniwin

  • 2 iMac's on 10.5.5 with different airport speeds?

    Hi,
Can someone tell me if this is right or not:
I have a home airport network of 2 iMacs. They work fine. BUT, one shows network speed of a max 48 Mbit/s and the other 130. They are both on 10.5.5.
Using the network utility(en1), one says Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g) and works at 36-48. The other says Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g/n) and runs at 130.
The slower (36-48 Mbit/s) has this Airport card:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x89)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.38.9)
    Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g)
The 150Mbits one's Airport card says:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8C)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.38.9)
    Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g/n)
Also, on the slow one if I press alt whilst clicking on the airport icon it shows me the speed,
on the fast one that doesn't happen.
Question, shouldn't they both connect at 130 Mbit/s? Why the difference?
    What is the solution.
    Thanks.

One of your cards supports 802.11n and the other doesn't.
802.11n is (currently) the fastest wireless standard. Early iMacs shipped with cards that, technically, supported 802.11n but it was disabled because the standard was in flux (not yet ratified) and Apple didn't make a compatible base station.
I'm guessing the machine that does support 802.11n was bought later, after the dust had settled.
For the older machines, Apple released an enabler (a href="http://store.apple.com/us/product/D4141ZM/A">available here to enabler 802.11n on the earlier systems. I costs $2 due to the license fees Apple have to pay. If you want both machines to run at 802.11n you'll need the enabler.

Thanks so much. I checked the enabler download page and it said:
These Macs have the 802.11n hardware built-in:
MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo
MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo
Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme option
iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)
The one which runs slower is an early White 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac.
So, I assume the enabler is no good, and it will have to stay as is, which for my purposes is fine.
Thanks so much for your help and explanation.

  • Mac to Windows ?'s - brand new iMac owner,  Help please...

I am proud brand new 24” iMac owner (early Christmas present to myself), the first time I ever used a Mac was when I turned mine on right out of the box 2 days ago. I will be using my iMac mainly for basic Music/Pictures/Videos stuff like browse the web, downloading and to maintain my iphone and ipods.
I am having some trouble organizing all of my media about 300gb worth, I am so used to Windows and how I had everything set up and organized that my iMac feels out of control. Any suggestions on organization ideas/strategies would be very appreciated.
If someone would be so kind to please help me along with these Windows to Mac questions…..
I will gladly appreciate any and all feedback!
    Thanks in advance
    1.) Internet Security –
Q - I frequently download torrents and use Limwire. What is recommended for a Mac and are there any free anti-virus programs that work good?
True or False? – I have read that since there are no viruses made for Mac that this is not needed , unless you often share with a Windows computer or something along those lines….
    2.) Windows Defrag/Disk Cleanup –
Q - Is this necessary for a Mac, if so does Mac have a similar process to cleanup unused space on the hard drive?
A – I have read that it is not necessary for a Mac, but some users still prefer to do disk cleanup (Any recommended disk cleanup programs? Preferably free).
    3.) Installing programs on a Mac –
Q - Can I mess this up, or is it self explanatory like Windows?
A – I think I have figured this out. I have successfully installed MS Office, Adobe Premium CS3, etc… BUT in Applications in the finder, once the download is complete can I have just the App there or should I leave the whole folder and its downloaded contents? What I mean is if I were to delete the other misc downloaded files inside the folder would the program still run correctly?
Im not sure how to make myself clear on this, so if its way too confusing I can live with a few extra folders….
    4.) Additional Programs –
Q - Are there any “must have” programs that do not come standard on an iMac?
FYI – I have brand new MS office, full Adobe Premium CS3, Toast, and Transmission torrent dloader (I think that’s what it is called)
    5.) iTunes –
Q - Is it possible to import your iTunes library from Windows to a Mac?
    - I think I am actually going to re-do my whole library manually, BUT can I somehow get all my playlists from my Windows laptop to my iMac?
    6.) Folder Icons -
Q - On Windows you can change the basic blank folder or icon to a different icon or picture (thumbnail view), is this customizable on a Mac also?
    - So far its looking like it is not possible… The only customization I can seem to do is to “label” with a color. I would really like to be able to customize that basic blue folder, any suggestions?
    7.) Application Task Manager (Ctrl/Alt/Del) -
Q - Does Mac have a similar option if not, how can I view all current applications running on my iMac?
Thanks again, its such a relief to have a community like this

    1. ClamXAV is the only free anti-virus software for the Mac.
    2. OS X defrags all files under 20 MBs on the fly. Unless you have a lot of very large files that undergo frequent changes, there's little need to defragment the drive. For disk repair and other maintenance see my FAQ at the end of this post.
    3. Programs are installed on a Mac much the same as on Windows. Some use installers while some you can just drag from the download file to the Applications folder.
    4. There are thousands of programs. What's one person's must have is another's must not. Mac software can be found for download at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    5. Yes. See Macworld - How to transfer iTunes libraries between PC and Mac.
    6. Yes. You can download sets of replacement icons from many different sites. Or you can copy an image onto the clipboard (COMMAND-C) then select the folder you wish to change, press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. You will see the icon in the top left corner. Click on the image to select it then press COMMAND-V to paste the image in the clipboard. You now have a new folder icon. You can do this for files as well. CAVEAT: Not a good idea to change any OS X system folders. Although you can the next time you upgrade the OS the custom icons will likely disappear. You will then have to redo them. There are certain utilities that can change system icons as well.
    7. Yes. There are two different ones. The Application Switcher - press COMMAND-TAB to cycle through running applications. The Task Manager - press COMMAND-OPTION-ESC. The Task Manager can only be used to force quit running applications. If you want to view running applications then use the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • IMac 24 inch wakes up without touching it...

    Hi everybody!
At least 2 times in the last two months, my iMac 24 inch has woken up by itself. I put him to sleep (NOT shut down) in the evening, and the next morning it is awake. I have no devices connected, no schedule energy saver start-up or other start-up times installed, no 'starting up after power down' or such things. I have nothing activated that alows outside acces to my computer at night. I don't have TV or anything else. Everything is standard on my iMac. I shut down Safari and Mail before i put him to sleep.
My Apple dealer says that iMacs regulary automatically deframentate, if necessary even at night. But shouldn't it then automatically go back to sleep again?
Does anyone else have an iMac that sometimes wakes up by itself?
    Thanks!

If the CPU is awake, regardless of the screensaver being active or the screen being asleep, the launchd timer will run and the scripts will run at the right time, unless the Mac has been restarted, which resets the timer.
If the Mac is off the timer does not run and is reset when the Mac is restarted.
If the Mac is asleep the timer does not run, but begins where it left off when the Mac is awakened and will run the scripts, offset by how long the Mac was asleep, as long as the Mac is not restarted or put to sleep before they are run.
Anacron does not run the scripts when the Mac is asleep or off, it checks to see if the scripts were run at the proper time whenever the Mac is restarted or awakened and every hour. If they were not run on time, Anacron runs the appropriate script.

  • If I buy iMac new model 21.5" 2.9GHz, Can i upgrade to fusion drive later.

I have budget for only standard version of iMac(new) 21.5" 2.9GHz, But I want to add fusion drive on it. Can I upgrade it later?

Probably the best answer is "not easily". The iMac can be taken apart, but it is very hard to do so. Most people would not want to attempt it, although there are Mac specialists in most cities that can do the job for you for a fee.
However, if you really want the fusion drive, I would recommend getting it now. It will save you a lot of hassle (and I personally think it is by far the best upgrade that anyone can make on a new iMac).

  • 7300GT any good for games over imac X1600XT?

    Hi,
I have been waiting for the mac pro and have been using a standard 17" intel imac in the meantime. I have found it great for games like Quake 4, Doom 3 and Call of Duty 2 etc but now that the mac pros are out i intend to buy one. The thing i'd like to know is how will the 2ghz version with the standard 7300gt video card stack up aginst the imac with the standard x1600xt? The frame rates don't look that hot on apples web site but i just need it to play at least as good as the imac. I don't have the cash for any of the upgrade cards.
    Ant thoughts welcome!

I would exactly say that the 7300GT is a slouch. Far from it. What you have to remember is that put up against cards like the ATI X1900 it looks shameful. The 7300GT is a good, cheap, middle performing display card.
Michael Schumacher's F1 Ferarri is a quick little beast. Thing is, put it up against Captain Kirk's Enterprise and it's shamefully slow.

  • IMac Firewire voltage

I have a 2006 20" iMac 2GB Intel Duo Core and I've been having some trouble with bus-powering from my firewire (as detailed in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9874414&#9874414 ).
I measured the voltage with a multimeter and got a reading of 11.91 VDC on both my fw400 ports but I've read that Firewire should allow up to 30V.
Is 12V the standard on these iMacs or could there be some problem that is limiting the voltage?
    Thanks in advance.

What the spec says that the standard is capable of doing, and what Apple builds into their Macs and allows FireWire to do are not the same thing. The current iMac supports up to 7 watts, the current Mac mini up to 8 watts on their FW 800 ports.
