Standard overprint vs. illustrator overprint mode

I am somewhat new in working via the PDF workflow, Adobe Acrobat 7.0.7, MAC OS Tiger
Can someone tell me what the differences are between the standard overprint mode (OPM 0) versus illustrator overprint mode (OPM 1) from the Adobe Pitstop Inspector plug-in; prepress tab to overprint tab. Thanks

Hi Debra
Illustrator overprint mode (OPM) is an addition to the standard overprinting (OP).
If OP is 1, the object on top overprint the object underneath. So far so good.
Unfortunately this does NOT work if both Objects are of type DeviceCMYK.
Example: You have a black text that is defined in 0/0/0/100 and is set to overprint, it still knocks out the CMY channel of the object from underneath. Only if the object underneath is of type Device-N (e.g. SpotColor), than the color underneath is not knocked out. You can very easy see that in the output preview.
If you want that the black text on top does not knock out the CMY color of the object underneath, you have to specify OPM=1.
Info: Only those color channels from the object underneath are not knocked out, the are defined as 0% in the object above. if your black was define 1/1/1/100, then overprinting would not make any difference, since the is no channel with 0%. Again - define such objects and check in the Acrobat Output Preview.
In other words: if you have 2 DeviceCMYK objects and you want the one on top to overprint the one underneath, you have to activate OPM. You could also name it CMYK-overprint. since this is a behaviour that you would expect OPM should always be 1.
There is actually much more that you can read and see for yourself if you download the Altona Testsuite package, that is freely avaliable at www.eci.org (search in the donwload section).
BTW: PitStop is from Enfocus, not from Adobe.

  • Illustrator Overprint Preview shows grids?

Whenever I enable Overprint Preview Illustrator seems to add grids on/over my document.
When I disable it, it dissapears.
I find this strange because to me the opposite sounds more logical.
Will these grids be printed if I choose to print?

    Indeed, Victor,
Overprint Preview is an approximation of what you may call an ink preview, to (more or less) show how all the parts of artwork will interact and appear in print; this means that to a certain extent you see through the topmost artwork (parts).
This see through then includes the grid which becomes visible underneath the artwork and not merely round it as in (normal) Preview.
So no problem, maybe a bit of a curiosity.

  • Simulating Overprint from Illustrator to PDF

    Hello Forums,
I am asking here because my searches haven't found anything to answer my question.  I work in a prepress department and we usually send out PDFs to customers via the Adobe PDF printer with simulate overprint on (This is in Mac OSX Leopard).  Reason being is we back everything up with white (but white is on top layer) and have overprinting traps.  Most customers don't have a clue about overprint preview in Adobe Reader and even if they were able to view the PDFs with overprint, if they wanted to print, they would print large white blocks because the printer wouldn't simulate the overprint.  We have one Mac Pro here with Snow Leopard and as I have read, they have gone away with the PDF printer and I am not able to simulate overprint on anything.  I have tried sharing my printer (I am running Leopard), hiding layers, etc. to no avail.  Does anybody have any ideas or resources to point me?  All help is much appreciated.

Using Distiller is better because you have more control over the settings for the final PDFs and the generated PDFs are way smaller in size, which is largely convenient when you produce dozens of them every day.
Regarding XMP, I actually found an article on Adobe's website that say that you can embed XMP data within a PostScript. You can find it here (www.adobe.com/devnet/xmp/pdfs/xmp_specification.pdf) on page 103 of the document. I'm working on it to make it run and let you the result when tested.

  • Why does illustrator overprint white text as default? It's absolutely insane to have it a s a default. I have lost masses of time because of this - look at Freehand and learn!!!!

What is the quickest way to disable this absurd function that illustrator themselves have not yet mastered?

Of course you're correct. However, it was a digital printer with a very quick turnaround and as they were quite a distance from me it was virtually impossible to have a proof run, signed off (if it was OK of course) yadda yadda.... It was one of this ones! But as I say you are correct I should have checked it.
Still, it is a simple thing that SHOULD NOT be a default. I know white is required to over print at times but not that often that it is a default setting.
I will certainly check it from now on.

  • CS6 Design Standard , clone, migration tool, trial mode (urgence)

Hi all and sorry for this question.
I clone on a external disk my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.7) with Super Dumper .
Then i have istalled OSX 10.8.2 and imported all data and applications with the migration tool during the installation.
My problem is that now my CS6 Standard Edition Suite is in trial mode.
I have a Box CS6 Design Standard licence - i have to re-insert my serial number?
Why Apple Migration Assistant not transfer also the data of licence?
It is normal or it's clone that is bugged?
    Many thanks.

Adobe applications should be installed, not migrated. I suggest the cleaner tool be used to uninstall all of it and then re-install the software properly.

  • CS4 bringing photoshop layered files into illustrator - blending modes

    Hello.
I have a layered photoshop file that is being brought into illustrator. One layer is a drop shadow and is set to multiply within photoshop. The drop shadow is NOT an effect. It's just a plain layer of a drop shadow. When I bring it into illustrator it doesn't act as if it is set to multiply when placed over my illustrator object. I know it's easy enough to make the shadow within illustrator and set the blending mode there but I would like to know why this is not working.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Illustrator's blending math is not the same as Photoshop's -- there will be differences if you import/export layered data between the apps.

  • Illustrator Fullscreen mode with out scroll bars

    Hi,
I'm using Illustrator CS5 for Mac. When I go to full screen mode all toolbars disappear but scroll bar is still there.
    How can I solve that?
    Thanks,
    Gregor Cepek

Let me explain my situation. In our company we have one big screen (full hd) for clients to see our work in realtime.
Now I just create "window -> new window" so I have copy of document I'm working on. Then I move it to the big screen and enable "full screen mode".
It hides all toolbars which is perfect, but it doesn't hide scroll bars (and zoom and page drop down). In manual is written that full screen mode should be with out scroll bars.
As our designs are mostly for FULL HD resolution it would be very nice to display them full screen on HD TV set. With no distracting scroll bars.
    In photoshop it works ok.
    Thank you,
    Gregor Cepek

  • Installing CS4 Design Standard Wont Allow Illustrator to Install

I am trying to install CS4 Design Standard and it will not allow me to check the box to install Illustrator.  I have had Illustrator CS4 on my machine in the past but have deleted it.  Anyone know what I can to to be able to install Illustrator CS4.  I need to because I have now upgraded to Snow Leopard.

You don't delete Adobe apps anymore you use the uninstaller. So download the CS4 cleanscript to remove all traces of CS4 and reinstall everything.

  • Illustrator Color Modes

Why is their only CMYK & RGB and not Greyscale in Adobe Illustrator?

Because in print, grayscale is just black. If that's what you're looking for, just build your art in CMYK using various shades of process K and you've got "grayscale" art when printing to a standard press.
... Or build in full color and then go up to filter> color> convert to grayscale. (this only works on gradients and gradient mesh in CS3)
Keep in mind that Illustrator is not Photoshop. The way vectors handle color is different from the way a traditional image editor does it.

    Hello.
    From the User Manual:
    Method:
Select the method that your documents are entered, automatic or manual.
-Automatic is when a concurrent process (e.g., an external program) enters transaction data into an Oracle Application, which generates documents.
-Manual is when a document is manually entered using a form in an application.

  • Can I use Standard Keyboard in Landscape/Widescreen mode?

I know there are apps that let you use a widescreen keyboard. But is there a way to use the standard keyboard that the system gives you (in Safari, Settings, etc.) in the landscape orientation? I ask this because my stepdad has huge hands and just can't use the regular keyboard at all. He loves the touch, but it's a comedy to watch him try to enter a single word; takes about 10 tries. My hands are small, and even I find the portrait-size keyboard a bit too small. The simple ability to turn the unit on its side and get a wider keyboard would be a huge win.
Anyone know of ways to alter the system or utilities to achieve this?

Thanks, yes I've seen these. Unfortunately they apply only to specific applications and not generally to the system and to applications like Safari that we use all the time. I appreciate the lead, though.

  • Minor screen drawing anomaly with non-standard page sizes in outline mode.

When I use a page size of 5.5 x 8.5, and the window is larger than the page, the right edge of the page is drawn incorrectly. Instead of a small shadow at the right edge, there are black blotches. As far as I can tell, this only occurs in outline mode, only on the first page, only in sizes other than 8.5 x 11.
Not a big deal, clearly, but someone ought to log it. Some memory somewhere is not getting written correction. This is easily reproducible.
I'll post a screen shot somewhere if anyone wants to pursue this.

It is fun to explore this question and I have tried to reproduce the problem, but my Pages09 behaves with "all" different page setups like A4, US Letter, half US Letter , US Legal. It would be nice to see the screen shots if it isn't to much trouble.
Question - have updated iWorks with the update that came a while ago??
