Standard ratio (4:3) ???

I want to record video into imovie using my computer's camera. I am filming my daughter dancing. I only seem to have the widescreen option. I want standard  aspect so she can watch it on her tv. (it's old, and not a widescreen.) I tried cropping it in imove, but the ratio is constrained to widescreen. I want 4:3 ratio. Can this be done? I have the newest (updated) Imovie installed.
Side note- my ridiculous username was created after apple rejected many many many attempts to create a username. My question is real, despite the silly username. Thanks!

and exported at high quality image.
iDVD only recognizes widescreen if if comes straight from iMovie. Once you exported, it "lost" the 16:9 tag that iDVD is looking for, even if QT still knows they are widescreen. Yes, this doesn't make sense to me either.
You have two choices - use the iMovie file without exporting or use the Anamoprhicizer found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
This will put that "tag" back on.

  • Can I convert my standard ratio?

I imported my videos into iMovie and then when it was finished I exported them out. Afterwards I deleted the originals. (The files were to big to fit on my external hard drive. So when I exported them back out iMovie compressed them to less than half the original size.) When I went back later and opened them I realized that I had the project using a widescreen ratio instead of standard so I lost a bit of quality. Is there a way I can convert them back to standard ratio?

Unfortunately you now have the quality you have, however assuming you exported to an mpeg format and don't have any chapters in your movie you can reimported it and place it in a 4:3 project. To ensure your video fits the 4:3 RA properly you may need to adjust it's cropping in the crop window (advanced tools)

  • Cropping and outputting to a non-standard ratio

I have a video of a guy speaking and it was shot apparently on a camera that was turned on its side. Beautiful, I know. So, I need to rotate it, which is easy enough. But, when I do, I have space on either side because the ratio then becomes 3:4, and if I zoom the video in too far, the man's head gets cut off. SO, I want to be able to rotate, crop, and output the video to a vertical ratio like 4:8 instead of 4:3. Is this possible??
Same question for outputting to a 16:9 ratio.
If I wasn't clear enough, let me know.

OK, I may have confused you... Let me try this a different way.
How do I output my FCE movie to a file format like QuickTime so when I open the finished movie in QuickTime, the dimension of the movie is 300 W x 480 H, and not 640x480 with black bars on either side?
let me know if that still doesn't make sense what I'm asking.

  • Does aperture have templates for non-standard aspect ratios?

i am not yet an aperture user, but i am interested in switching to it to improve on the photo book quality WRT iPhoto.
i like very much to have photos with non-standard aspect ratios, either square or wide (like 3:1). these are cropped very badly by iPhoto; is it better in Aperture?
    thanks,
    b.

The templates my have a few variations that use non-standard ratios, but you can specify any photo box ratio. You have the option to either right click and choose it from a list, or choose the custom option from that pull list, or use the "Size & Position" pane of the Aperture UI to specify an exact size, angle, and border thickness and color of a photobox. This works similar to the controls in Pages, but without some of the nice effects like transparency and drop shadows.
If you want to create custom layouts, read the "Working with Custom Themes" section on page 609 of the user manual (download it with the trial). The trial is good for 30 days, so why not give it a spin, and if you don't think it's worth the $199, then you can always delete it at no cost to you other than your time.

  • Subtitles for 9x16 and other non-standard aspect ratios?

We're producing several videos for a museum which will be shown on a vertical screen. We shot with our camera turned 90 degrees on its side, are editing that way and will create the DVD/MPEG4s that way. When they are shown the display will also be rotated. So far, so good.
I am told that we can also rotate subtitle placement 90 degrees as well, but cannot find how to do this. I have seen it done in other presentations as well.
How can I get the subtitles to run along the narrow side of our display?
    Thanks,

  • CS4 changing aspect ratio, resizing video

    Hello,
I've been working on a project at school for some time and am just now getting to the editing factor. My issue is about half way through editing it seems that its changed the aspect ratio from wide screen to a more standard ratio. I have it set to scale to the frame size. Just to clear a few things up they were all captured the same, all the original quicktime files are the same it's just once I import them into premiere that I start having issues. I really appreciate it, thanks

After uploading it to youtube the size gets so small you can hardly see it. My main goal with this thread is to get the video to actually scale to the frame.

  • Which aspect ratio do you recommend?

I'm making a dvd of old family movies from the 70's. The dvd will be played on new flat screen tv's but I'm confused if I should do standard ratio or widescreen? I would normally do widescreen but was concerned that might affect the video quality?
My question is should I change the aspect ratio to standard to have better quality video since the movie are converted from old movie reels or does that not matter and just stick with widescreen since the tv's can handle widescreen?
    Thanks for the help.

    It depends.
The basic connection type uses the jdbc thin (type 4) driver. This means that you don't need oracle client software installed - all you need is SQLDeveloper. The down side is that the thin driver doesn't support all the available features. Things like operating system authentication, fast connection failover, and some of the more complex data types are not supported.
The TNS connection type uses the OCI driver. This means that you must have an oracle client installed (and it must match the version of the jdbc driver provided with SQLDeveloper.) This lets you use more features.
I always use Basic connections, but I don't need any of the missing features.

  • Buffer, library, dictionary, shared pool, redo log buffer chache hit ratios

Can please one provide information and sql queries to calculate Buffer, library, dictionary, shared pool, redo log buffer chache hit ratios and if any other ratio for investigation of performance issues in oracle 10g database (10g.1 and 10g.2 both). thanks in advance.

In and by themselves most of the standard ratio calculations are useless to misleading. All the ratios should always be considered in relation to other data such as total requests for a resource, existence of any outlying values in the associated events, etc ....
The proper warning being given then you can find most of the standard ratios mentioned with SQL for their calculation in the Performance and Tuning manual for your version of Oracle.

  • DBA to Oracle DB Ratio

What is the industry standard Production (O&M) DBA to Oracle DB ratio?
    Thanks!

I don't believe there is any such "standard" ratio and I'd be rather leery of any suggested number. Realistically, the answer is highly dependent on the organization.
    - Some organizations will create hundreds of small databases rather than creating a single database with hundreds of schemas or with different applications sharing the same schema. It's not 1/100th the effort to manage that one large, complex database that it is to manage the 100 separate small databases.
    - Different organizations have different requirements for what the DBA is supposed to do. If your DBAs are also supposed to manage the applications, manage user security, work with developers, sit on change control boards, etc. that takes away time that they could be spending on managing databases. If your organization applies every patchset and upgrades to each new release, that can also require a fair bit of effort that another organization that hasn't upgraded since 8.1.7 can avoid.
    - Different applications require different amounts of work to maintain (again, depending on DBA job descriptions). Your 10 TB data warehouse with hundreds of nightly load scripts probably requires more DBA work than the departmental receipt tracker. Then again, the departmental receipt tracker may be the result of 2 weeks of development by some intern years ago that suffers from constant faults that require DBA intervention.
    - Different organizations use different feature sets. If you're using cutting-edge Oracle features, it's more likely that you'll be encountering errors and more likely that your DBAs have to spend cycles getting up to speed on new technology. If you're only using features that have been around since Oracle 7, the DBAs may have less work to do. Unless, of course, people have been implementing features that Oracle provides manually, thus requiring regular DBA involvement.

  • "Do Not Constrain" crop setting won't stick

I never crop using a set ratio. The crop is always determined by the content of the image and I always want to be able to move one side independently of another, as with any other program, so this is making me crazy. It was a drag that Ap2 defaulted to a constrained ratio and made you toggle the menu at every boot, but I can't even get it to stay on the "Do Not Constrain" setting in between tweaks of the same image. Maddening.
It's a dealbreaker for me, no matter how great the rest is. Is this the way it is or have I got a quirk in my rig?
    Thanks,
    J

As far as exposure goes, the extra parts (surrounding film, either negs or transparencies; the slide mount) scan black, and with a decently exposed image, they shouldn't be much different than the black in the image. Note that this is completely unlike reflective scans of opaque materials, where you need to crop down while scanning, to keep the auto exposure from reading the surrounding border (which might be yellowed, say) or the scanner cover background (which might be much whiter than what you're scanning.) There have been a few times where I'm trying to rescue a blown out image and I'll crop in more on the subject of interest to get a better scan exposure.
As for cutting mats, etc. it's kind of ironic, but while I shoot almost nothing but film, I "display" the vast majority of it online! In which case, who cares what the proportions are in relation to standards, as long as they make sense for the image for whatever reason.
I thought of two more situations where I always crop randomly. First is the whole reason I bought Aperture: a life-long project (it will probably fall to a few generations of heirs at the current rate!) to get high quality pictures of every pinball backglass ever made. By the time I got to a couple of thousand slides, I desperately needed something like Aperture to help me organize and process the images. But there have been any number of backglass sizes over the years, plus I want to nudge the crops a bit even on ones that are the same proportions, to make up for an edge shadow or paint defect or whatever. And they all get cropped because I shoot them with decent "margins" to begin with, to allow room for deskewing, errors in the viewfinder vs the slide mount, etc.
The other one is sporting shots of my sons. I grab what I am capable of under the conditions (field position, lens length, my ability to track the action, etc.) and then reframe once scanned to make the best picture I can from what's there. Which leaves them all over the map in terms of aspect ratio, but then they're mostly viewed online by he and his friends, copied to Facebook, whatever, where standard ratios are completely unimportant.

  • Changing the image shape of an FCP output

    Hey there,
I'm using FCP HD with OS10.4 on a Powermac g5. I generally just work with dv footage.
I want to output a media file that has specific ratio/ dimensions (proportional to 288 pixels wide and 1, 520 pixels high, ie, an unpended rectangle). These have to be the actual dimension of the file/ image, rather than the shape of the image if cropped inside a standard ratio.
How do I control the output ratio/ dimensions? Is this something you can set? I can only see the PAL/ntsc etc ratios... anyone out there help?
    Many thanks!
    Best
    Richard

Not a totally stupid question...I'd assume you have a reason for doing this...
Provided you understand what this is going to do to your image...you would do the following:
File / Export / Using Quicktime Conversion
Format - Quicktime Movie (unless you require some other format)
Click on 'Option' button and click on the 'Settings button in the Video section. You can designate a type of compression...Video, Animation, TGA, DV-NTSC...etc.
Click OK, then click on the 'Size' button in the video section.
Click the Dimensions button and choose Custom at bottom, then type in your 288x1520. You would now choose to select Preserve Aspect ratio using - Letterbox, Crop or Fit within dimensions.
Click OK, OK, name the file and hit save.
Tada...hopefully the image you're working with will look good, either very small or very squeezed...depending on your choice of aspect ratio...and how it's to be presented.

  • Export resizing issue in LR 3

I've been trying to export jpeg images from LR 3, and sizing them to 1110 x 525 pixels, @ 72dpi, the dimensions of my blog header. However, despite inputing these values, the exported jpeg image is sized at 793 x525. Quality is set to 85 and nothing else is checked. Am I missing something? I've also tried the "dimensions" and the "width/height" box choices, but it always outputs at the same 793 x525.
The files are from a Nikon D2h (a little old), RAW.
    Please help. Thanks in advance.
    Mike

Lightroom cannot change the current width-to-height proportions of your currently displayed picture, when you export. To do so it would either need to distort the image, or crop it, or add extra pixels at the edges, all of which would change its appearance - which LR is designed not to do.
    Your current image's width : height ratio is about 1.5 : 1 - as judged by the 793 : 525 ratio.
The pixel dimension sizing options set a "box" where the picture is scaled to fit inside limits. The proportions you have stated are closer to 2:1 - as judged by the 1110 x 525 ratio. So the 1.5 : 1 image is not the right shape to fit exactly. If it hits one limit, it will not hit the other limit.
In order to make your image export at the proportions you require - IOW, to make it completely fill the defined box - you would re-crop it to a suitable aspect ratio (R key shortcut, you may need to click the menu next to "Aspect:" and choose "Enter Custom" to achieve this precisely).
[edit: as the other poster says, you can type in the desired pixel numbers to define this crop aspect, or else a more standard ratio where applicable. 500:250 would come out exactly the same, in practice, as 2:1.  I only simplified these numbers down for purposes of comparing the shapes directly. 1.5:1 is identical to 3:2, which is a common native dSLR aspect ratio.]
You may wish to do this re-cropping onto a new Virtual Copy, if you also want to retain the current crop as it is. Or else, you can click back in the edting History, to return to that afterwards.

  • PSE 9 Organizer Printing Error

I have PSE 9 and when I am using the Organizer to print an individual photo, the message, "Printing Error, Organizer will skip printing" appears.  I can only guess what might be happening here.  It is a paticular photo in which I have "cropped" the image and the aspect ratio is not a "standard ratio".  But I may be WAY off on my guess here.
Any idea what may cause this error?  I'm sure it's something I am doing but I don't know what.

I've never seen this admonition, and I don't print from the organizer.
Suggest that you print from the editor (different print engine), be sure that you select the proper paper size. Note that in the print dialog, #3, there is provison for custom paper size.
A work-around is to place your picture on a canvas with standard paper size, e.g. 4x6, 5x7, to conform to your paper stock.

  • Adobe After Affects users only: PAL 16:9 composition export to iMovie

When I export a PAL 16:9 AE6.5 composition to a Quicktime (7) movie and then import the clip it into a widescreen iMovie project, the footage is standard ratio - ie: does not fill the 16:9 editing window - any idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Cheers

    You would think so...
The composition settings are all 16:9 (frame AND pixel ratio), and it displays in 16:9 in AAE, it's almost like QT is not picking the 16:9 settings from AAE...
Anyway, it's all a bit deflating - all these video tools and none are working for me.
I've got Final Cut Pro so maybe I'll need to get my head around that if I want to use AE, despite the steep learning curve involved...

  • IDVD movie does not fit on widescreen tv

I edited a movie on imovie and then shared it with iDVD to burn onto a DVD.  In both programs the aspect ratio was set to widescreen (16:9), but whe I played the burned DVD on our widescreen TV the sides movie was too wide for the TV.  Is there any other way to adjust the width so that it will fit the screen?

Hey, I found a solution - My DVD player settings! I had this problem too!
For some crazy reason the DVD player was set to standard ratio instead of 16:9 widescreen. When I fixed this everything worked. My LCD HDTV aspect ratio / 'Picture Options' settings are on 'Just Scan' and it all works fine.
Hope this is a solution that is able to help someone out there with the same problem
