Standardizing exposure across multiple images using a gray card

Hi,
I am studying chest feather coloration in Barn Swallows, and take pictures of swallow chests against a white background with gridlines, while always including a gray card in the image. In order to evaluate chest color between birds, the lighting, exposure and white balance for all images must be identical.
I place my tripod in the shade whenever possible and set exposure manually (using the spot meter on a D200) to be 2 stops underexposed, and use fill flash to provide the bulk of the light. This gives me even lighting, but because of the automative flash exposure adjustment, each photo has slightly different luminance.
I was under the impression that adjusting exposure would be a snap by clicking on the gray card in each image and telling my software to adjust it to 18% reflectance. However, Lightroom does not seem have such a feature. This seems very strange given how frequently one is instructed to standardize exposure with a gray card.
Adding to the problem is that my gray card (from Delta) has a lot of microscopic variation in its surface in brightness (and hue). While Lightroom gives me a white balance adjustment eye dropper, it seems to be limited to sampling one pixel, rather than averaging values over a number of pixels. Because of the limitations of my gray card, Lightroom's white balance eye dropper is of little use, as the white balance vary dramatically depending on which pixel on the gray card I sample. Is there a way to change the size of the area sampled for white balance purposes?
Thanks much,
Gernot

Gernot,
I think the thing to do is to use a consistent setup, which means no TTL on the flash and a set distance from the subject, and minimise ambient light effects (small aperture).
Alternatively you could photograph a "colourchecker" with each bird and use a calibration script on the raw files to sort out the settings each time - a bit lengthy though, expect about 20 minutes a time. However, it would be quite definitive.
As far as the "single point" problem goes, you could set all the noise sliders to the max to blur out the imperfections in the card, take a sample, then undo the noise corrections.
I can't help thinking that for reference work like this, Photoshop is the tool for the job and LR will help you get organised into PS, but it won't replace it.

I want to click the grey card photo in ACR 7.3. of Elements, an then apply it to multiple Photos there.
Is that possible in Elemements or only in Photoshop's ACR?

Thanks, but just this it was I‘d done – to click my RAW files, select open in Windwos Explorer – and ACR opens – but only with first selectet file. I’m missing the fim stripe on the left site….thats the Problem. All selected files are imported into ACR, but I only see the full size image of the at first selectet file. Breaking the prozess…I see one after the other selectet filed disappearing . The were open, but not shown as a filstripe…that’s the problem

  • Load Multiple Images using link in Crystal Report

    Hi Guys,
I am currently in need of developing a new requirement for our company's client. We have to load multiple images using just link in Crystal Report. Let's say that the images are stored in a folder (e.g., C:\Datafolder\Images\) and i have to fetch two images to show in crystal report (say, C:\Datafolder\Images\imageval1 and C:\Datafolder\Images\imageval2). These are actually dynamically created and therefore the number of images are not known and so i have to iterate through the list of image links.
Is it possible using merely crystal report and how?. Please take note that we're also using C# in developing our software applications.
    Thanks and best regards.

    Hi Chito,
You cannot load multiple images dynamically. Using the 'graphic location' formula for the OLE Object, you can only point to a location that can load one image.
For the second image, you'll need to manually insert another OLE Object and point the formula to the next image's location.
You can try posting to the SAP Crystal Reports, version for Visual Studio space to find out whether this can be done using CR SDK.

  • Using a gray card

If you use a gray card in your image to determine your white balance, how do you apply the correct white balance/color balance to other images that don't have the gray card in the shot?
    thanks.
    russ
    altadena, ca

192,192, 192 is the same gray as a gray card. If all images are shot the same. make your adjustments on the image with the gray card so the gray card reads 192, 192, 192 and apply those corrections to all your images.

  • How to balance exposure in multiple images?

I will be shooting a series of photos that inludes a gray card in each image. How can I use Lightroom to obtain the same exposure in each image relative to the gray card?

    alternatively
Use the Match Total Exposures option that you find when you are in Develop mode
Simply work one image to the correct settings (note I use the word settings not just exposure) , and,  as Rikk suggested, take a white balance (optional) reading from the grey card, then select all the images you want referenced to that photo in the film strip along the bottom clickl Match Total Exposures in the Settings Menu
and all the photos will have the same relative settings.
If you've set clarity, noise, etc etc, before you do the Match Total Exposures, do a Sync Settings, so all the settings are identical, all the noise, the clarity and tone curve, the lens CA, the vibrance etc
THEN do the match total exposures.
Then you've applied all the settings you'd set out from the 1st image AND set the exposure to the same as the photo you'd worked on.
    It does not take long
    In precis
    edit one photo to completion
Copy ALL the settings to ALL the photos
    Then
Match Total Exposures from that 1st photo.

  • Add common keyword quickly across multiple images?

Is there a way to quickly add a common keyword across multiple selected images via simple text entry into the Metadata Panel or File Info dialogue - without loosing the existing multiple keywords?
I can use the keyword panel but this takes longer to add the keyword, and requires removing misc keywords that in most cases I don't want to keep and clutter up the panel.
For example, I have 3 images selected each with a single keyword "dog", "cat" and "horse" respectively.
I want to add a common keyword "animal", eg so that the first image now has two keywords  "dog" and "animal".
The problem with the two methods above is that:
Metadata panel will remove the existing multiple keywords, replacing them with only "animal" in each image
File Info will either do the same (if all existing keywords are highlighted), or if adding the new keyword, combine everything into each image so that each one has "dog", "cat", "horse", and "animal".
Maybe I'm missing something obvious but it doesn't seem intuitive for what I would expect to be a common requirement.
    Thanks

How about to use Metadata Template to append the keyword that you want to add to multiple selected images?
First create a Metadata Template with the common keyword input. And then select the all the images you want to add the keyword and then append the prepared Metadata Template.

  • Standard dimensions across multiple programs?

    Hi All,
So like many of you, I use Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and Motion in conjunction with DVD Studio pro. This means creating multiple documents, each of which requires choosing the dimensions.
What I want to know is what dimensions should I be choosing to ensure maximum compatibility and identical results across all 4 programs? If I am doing full screen motion graphics in Motion, putting togeher clips in FCP, and doing overlays in Photoshop, I want to make sure it will all line up and be the best resolution when put into DVDSP. I have read 20 books and they all seem to say something slightly different.
For example - in FCP, should I choose a standard DV preset or uncompressed so my text looks cleaner? What about Photoshop - file dimensions (720x480, 720x540, etc)? In Motion, do I want DV or SD Broadcast (480 vs 486)? Etc...
If there is one comprehensive source on this, please point me to it...
    Thanks,
    Jason

Take a look here, not 100% but gives some thoughts
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=667654&tstart=0
It is an example I set up for Motion use. (Export settings are key here also) Basically 720 x 480 uncompressed. Photoshop usually works at 720 x 480 if using CS2 which corrects for aspect ratios (using DV preset), if not you need to layout at the larger size then rescale to 720 x 480 without constraining proportions.

  • Color calibration across multiple images

    Hi everyone,
I took a bunch for photos for a scientific documentation project outside in the shade throughout the day, resulting in significantly different lighting. Here are the first and last photos of the day:
    http://imageshack.com/a/img841/4403/94vy.jpg (late morning)
    http://imageshack.com/a/img208/7861/ibvz.jpg (late afternoon)
The challenge is to use the color strip to calibrate the images so that the colors are consistent in all of them. Note that the color strip was printed without any special attention to calibration, so the absolute values of the colors are not necessarily trustworthy. Also, for these purposes, the paper can be assumed to be pure white. Basically, the idea is to get the absolute calibration as accurate as possible, but really nail the relative calibration, so that the color strip and paper appear essentially identical in all the images. I've tried adjusting levels by sampling known white, grey, and black in the images, but that hasn't done the trick -- clearly a more sophisticated approach is required! That said, I have over 100 of these images to process, so a relatively straightforward solution would be appreciated, if possible.
Please let me know if you can help, and thanks in advance!

Move on to video editing apps. Seriously. Automatic shot matching features e.g. in Speedgrade or even Premiere's/ After Effects' Auto-Levels can already get you halfway there by doing a temporal comparison within the sequence, not to speak of sophisticated plug-ins like RevisionFX' RE:Match. They may in fact skew the colors oddly or make them appear dull and "too averaged", but that would be quite uniform across the sequence and then much easier to tackle with a global correction.

  • Joins across multiple databases using jdbc

I have two databases, Access and Oracle. I can read and write to them, but now I need to execute an outer join. How would I construct the join in Java? I'd also like to store the result in Access. Thanks in advance.

Either you can link the Oracle DB into Access (by using File/Get External Data/Link Tables)
or you have to simulate the join in Java by doing two separate queries and looping through the results.

  • How to paste exposure setting to multiple images

    Hi all:
I know this question has probably been asked many times but I couldn't find any answer using the search so please be patient with me. :)
I came from the world of RawShooter Premium and I realized that my version of RSP can't read RAW file from the Canon 30D so I got the Adobe Lightroom to process my images. All is well until I decide to paste the exposure setting from one image to multiple images. I know there is a copy and paste button in the "develop" mode but it doesn't paste the settings (color temp, exposure, noise, etc) to all the images even when I highlighted the images I want to paste. I can do that in RSP, which save a lot of time.
Can anyone shed some light on this? I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ben

In develop, copy and paste only works on the selected image. You can sync or auto sync (control-sync) there.
If you want to copy and paste to multiple images using shift-control-C and shift-control-V, you can do that in grid mode.

  • Moving Images/Photos Against Gray Background

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to replicate an effect that I saw in a video as well as in the Apple store in iMovie. It's an effect where there are multiple images against a gray backgroud, all different sizes and with a slight reflection, and moving across the screen in a panning motion. I don't know if this was done in iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or Motion, as it was being displayed in iMovie but it might have just been a clip that was imported in the store. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    HI dbstudios:
    Welcome!
I think if you will go to the Apple Store tab and click on iLife 06 you'll see "Take a Tour of iMovie 6".
That may be where you saw the effect.

  • How to add metadata to multiple images via Template

    Hi
Wonder if anyone can tell me if it is possible to add Metadata to multiple images using a metadata template.  I see that I can add to multiple using Organizer but with that you have to type in the metadata.  In Elements 11 I can do it using a template but only for 1 image at a time.
Is there a way to do this in Elements 11 or Organizer?
    Thanks in Advance.

In the File properties dialog of the editor you can enter your values in the metadata tabs, then use the 'Import' button on the bottom of the dialog, switch to 'Export' and that exports your values as a template.
As far as I know, this is to be used in the advanced dialog of the downloader : you can use your templates at import time for a batch of images.
Otherwise, when you have selected many images in the organizer, you can click on the 'Add IPTC data' button in the tags panel on the right side : you have to enter the data which will be applied to all the selected files.

  • Aperture cannot add GPS data to multiple images at the same time

I am new to Aperture and have been using it for a week or so now. Today I tried to add GPS data to a number of images and found out, it appears Aperture can only add GPS data to one image at the time. When I select multiple images to add the GPS data to, it just doesn't do anything. It leaves the GPS data blank.
    Here is what I do:
From the Info-tab I select "GPS" from the drop down menu
At the bottom of the info tab I show the map
In the map's search box I enter the location I want to assign to the photo(s)
From the resulting drop down menu I select the locatiion I want and press the "assign to location" button
As long as I choose only a single image, this works fine and the GPS Data is added. Not so when I select more than a single image. After pressing the "assign to location" button it seems as if the GPS data is added (there is no message indicating otherwise), but the GPS data in the selected images is blank.
What am I doing wrong ?
    Additional info
I have been testing this a bit more and the behavior is even more strange: When you select multiple images in Aperture, they get a thin white border, except the one that you touch last (normally the last image of the selection) that will have a thicker border around it. It appears that, when selecting multiple images, the GPS data is ONLY assigned to the photo in the selected setthat has the thicker border (?????)
    Message was edited by: dinky2

Rereading your post, I think the problem is, that you are assigning the location from the Info panel and not from the Metadata menu. The Info panel and the Metadata menu ar behaving differently.
The Info panel will always only affect the primary selection, but the Metadata menu will work on all selected images (unless "Primary only" is checked). So , if you want to assign your location to multiple images, use "Metadata > Assign location" instead of the little map in the "Info" panel.
Or use the "Places" view. Then you can drag all images at once to the same pin on the map.
