  • Rman and dataguard standby

    I have a physical standby and was using rman to manage the deletion of archive logs. I changed the retention policy on the primary because of some disk space issues. When I tried to do the same on the standby it was unhappy:
    RMAN> CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-03002: failure of configure command at 07/08/2009 09:52:29
    RMAN-05021: this configuration cannot be changed for a BACKUP or STANDBY control file
    So, does that mean the only way to manage this is to rebuild it from the altered primary. Say it ain't so, Joe.

    I guess I need to get to grid control, but that has been such a painful process. I believe it will be a work around since the control file is the thing in the way.

  • Standby without DataGuard

    Hi,
    I've successfully created a standby for a single node Primary Database in 10g on Redhat Enterprise Linux 4.0 Update 4.0. I'm planning to add one more standby site to the same primary database. Now, my question is...
    1. Is it possible to setup more than one standby without the help of DataGuard.
    2. If possible, please guide me how to do it(step-by-step).
    Thanks in advance...
    Mahesh

    If you've already configured one Standby without DataGuard, you'd use the same method for the second standby.
    Since we do not know your scripts and how you are propagating archive logs and putting the standby in recovery mode -- all of which would be "custom" methods in the absence of DataGuard -- we can't really advice you . Because it is difficult to advice on extensions to a customisation without looking at a customisation.
    Many sites have implemented a scripted Standby without DataGuard using methods available since Oracle7. However, the frequency and method of archivelog propagation and how and when the standby database "wakes up" to apply the archivelogs etc are all site specific.
    Let's say that you DO use the ARCH process on the primary database to propagate archivelogs to the Standby destination site. Since Oracle 10g allows multiple log_archive_dest_n sites, you can just add one more site and have the archivelogs propagate to the additonal site. However, there are other parameters (eg MANDATORY/OPTIONAL, REOPEN, DELAY etc) that you would set based on your requirements.
    The two standby instances would be independent {unaware} of each other -- you can script delays between the archivelogs so that the two standby aren't always at the same level (this allows "fallback" to an "older version of the database" when necessary). You could have one standby stop recovery and open read only for some time.
    Short Answer : Yes, it is possible to have multiple "standby"s without DataGuard.
    Correct Answer : How you do it depends on how you want to extend your current implementation.

  • 9i Standby without dataguard

    Hi all.
    Oracle 9i ( SE )
    I'm trying to figure out how to create a standby database without dataguard. I've read that its possible, but I can't find any documentation on exactly how to do it. From what I've gathered I should be able to
    Create a duplicate database from primary backups
    Put standby database into "some recovery mode" - this is the bit I'm stumped at
    Copy archive logs from primary to standby, where they will magically be applied?
    I need to migration lots of datafiles to new disks, and cannot afford the downtime to just move them, so I'm thinking the best way to do it is to create a standby and keep it as close to synced to the primary as possible, then shutdown primary, apply file logs, point primary to the new datafile location..
    Can anyone either point me to a good article on doing standby with dataguard, or if there is a better way to move large ( move procedure will take about 4-5 hours) tablespaces/databases with minimum downtime.
    Thanks.

    Hrmm, maybe? so is "Data Guard" by itself available for SE?
    When I startup the database it reports
    "Oracle Data Guard is not available in this edition of Oracle."
    I'll go poke around that document too.
    btw. the document I read which suggests this is possible is, http://www.dba-oracle.com/oracle_tips_failover.htm

  • Physical standby without dataguard

    Naive question.
    I am going thru metalink note (374069.1) on how to create a physical standby. In that note, they didn't mention data guard stuff. Am I to assume that physical standby without dataguard can be created?
    Thanks.

    It might appears to be easy to create psuedo standy but you will have hardtime to simulate the automatic archive log apply and gap resolve.
    Plus the level of data availability provided by self-managed standby can't come close to Data Guard can offer.
    With Data Guard you can almost get zero data loss between Primary and Standy, depends on your redo logfile size there could be many data in online redo logs.

  • RAC and dataguard

    With reference to this thread
    is Dataguard and standby dbs is HA
    RAC and DATAGAURD are two different approches for high availability and desaster recovery.
    We are planning to implememt RAC and DATAGAURD but there are budget issues also.
    With RAC As i understand we have multiple instances governing a single database. So multiple node/machines governing a single database server.
    With DATAGAURD,we have a DR solution at another location.If the primary server fails,standby database takes up the role of primary.
    With RAC alone,if any node fails, there is another node to do instance recovery or the server still continues. But what if database server crashes. WIth RAC alone and no dataguard, won't it allow downtime?

    Hi Hashmi,
    RAC and DataGuard are indeed different things, as you understood.
    Regarding your question, there is no database server, that's the whole thing. There is one database (which resides on external redundant storage like Netapp, EMC, etc.) and there are several servers that are running the instances. Downtime will occur only if the storage crashes. And if you don't trust your storage you can have ASM redundancy, so storage failure will not cause downtime as well.
    The down side, is that there is one database, so if you have logical corruption, human error, or something similar you can loose data or have downtime.
    However, the high availability is real.
    In DataGuard, once the primary is down it takes some time (not long) to activate the standby, but it has a different IP, so you should configure your DNS/clients (in advance or at failover) to connect to the activated standby.

  • Oracle Streams and Dataguard

    Does anyone know how to configure oracle streams and dataguard to work together? I've set up an environment which successfully captures and applies records in a streams environment using
    log_archive_config=SEND, RECEIVE, NODG_CONFIG
    as soon as I try to introduce the streams setup into a database which already has dataguard setup it begins to get convoluted as setting DG_CONFIG requires you to then set the db_unique_name and it seems that the streams log mining will not work without being fully incorporated into the Dataguard configuration.
    Has anyone set up streams in a dataguard environment?

    Lets see what's missing from your request:
    1. Oracle version number?
    2. Physical or logical Data Guard?
    3. Which Data Guard mode? Synch or Asynch?
    4. Which Data Guard protection level?
    5. ARCH or LGWR?
    6. Which streams mode? Synch or Asynch?
    7. Hotlog or Autolog?
    8. Streams on the production server or the standby server?
    I'm all out of guesses tonight. Please provide enough information for someone to help you.

  • RMAN and Dataguard (10g)

    Hi all,
    I know this topic has been discussed several times over on this forum, but I have a peculiar situation.
    I have just inherited a client system with 10g and DataGuard with RMAN. The standby is Physical and both nodes are on HP-UX version and patchsets.
    The standby is persistently idle. The client insists on backing up the physical standby only.
    My question is this, is there any danger in backing up on the physical standby?. I've argued the case that we should backup the Primary and Standby to no joy. I am a little worried that we may experience a failure on the primary and start a recovery with backup taken from the Standby node. Is this feasible at all?
    Please confirm that I am right.
    Regards,
    Timothy.

    Having a recovery catalog, there's a resync with the standby controlfile after the backup, the backup informations are now in the catalog. Now when you need to restore/recover the primary database you connect to this and to the catalog. Primary and standby are clones , so you access the same record in the catalog regardless whether you are connected to the primary or to the standby. Because of this a resync will refresh the primary controlfile with the backup records which were taken while connected to th standby. A simple backup/recovery example looks like this:
    1) connect target sys/pwd@stdby catalog rman/pwd@rmancat
    2) backup database; (resync happens automatically after this)
    4) connect target sys/pwd@prim catalog rman/pwd@rmancat
    5) resync catalog;
    6) restore database;
    7) recoverer database:
    It's not mandatory, but recommended to backup the archivelogs on the primary side. Here you are sure to have all archivelogs (at least under regular circumstances). For many reasons it could happen, you miss some archives on the standby side.
    It's possible to run a standby in read-only mode for reporting purposes. In this case archivelog applying is suspended. If you have such a situation it's not recommended to backup the standby database, possibly it does not change for a long time and in case of recovery you have to apply a large number of archivelogs.

  • Tnsnames configuration for RAC and dataguard

    Hi everyone,
    I have an environment with RAC and dataguard (production is RAC, standby is single instance) and I was wondering what is the best way to configure the clients (since I have quite a few and I don't want to change their tnsnames if I need to failover to the standby database).
    Now, I need to have both RAC nodes of course, the question is what I should do with the standby...
    The problems are:
    1. If I add the standby as another address, 1/3 of the connections will get to it and I don't think it's a good idea
    2. I can disable the load_balance, but then all connections will go to the first node's listener
    3. After a failover, if the RAC nodes are down, it will take a long time to connect (the servers will not respond and the client will wait for timeout if it tries to connect to the RAC nodes first, only after the timeout it will try the standby and succeed)
    Any ideas and suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Liron

    Hi Robert,
    I agree that the standby should be up, but you have to admit that if it is down it should not delay connections to the primary...
    About the DNS, it's not that I don't trust the SA, but this is an environment for a customer so it should be as independent as it can be. So the failover process will be easy and fast. I don't know if I can get DNS permissions, but that's a good idea...
    A question that can be derived from this:
    assuming that I use observer to have an automatic failover, how should I configure my TNS? If the standby will become the primary automatically, I have to configure the clients to connect to the activated standby automatically. With no DNS changes or anything manual.
    I guess in this case, my best option will be with LOAD_BALANCE=off, some of the clients will have RAC-NODE1 as first address and some will have RAC-NODE2, the standby will be the last address and we'll suffer the timeout if the primary will be down when connecting to the activated standby.
    If anyone has other ideas, it would be great.
    Thanks,
    Liron

  • Question regarding standby and cables...

    I just got FIOS yesterday and so far (one day lol ) I love it.  I love the speed of my internet.  I was paying for BOOST and in the beginning I was getting 3.5mb daily but over the last 4 months that has become 500kb and I had had enough.
    On to my problem.  I have the new Motorola MRDVR HD in the livingroom and the 7100 p2 STB in the bedroom.  Last night watching a movie in the livingroom (HD) it failed, I restarted and it played, failed again and restarted then all seemed fine but in the bedroom I have a bigger problem.
    I understand the 7100p2 does standby and thats fine but I haven't bought a new TV yet so I am using an Epson projector with COMPOSITE cables.  I suspect the standby and composite cables are not playing nice but while watching anything 20-30 min in the STB just goes off...and the only way to get it back on is to pull the plug on the STB.
    I have tried every other iteration of menu/on/off/anything but once it goes into standby ( I guess it is anyway although I was watching something) It will not come back on.  Sometimes it tries...black screen for a few then back to the EPson start screen and from there the only way is to pull the STB plug.
    If it's a composite cable/projector problem Ill get another TV (the tech is SOOOO old I figured it would work np) but if there is some sort of interaction between the STB and TV that this cannot handle... I have other ways to hook it up but none will get me sound right now, s-video/vga to DVi to HDMI, but none of those will do sound (today anyway).
    I have searched all over the webs and cannot find even mention of someone trying to use these old old old cables with a newer STB... help...:-)
    EDIT: The motorola starter guide does show composite and s-video but no mention of standby.

    Actually the standby is just when you power the cable box off, its not really off, it is in standby waiting incase there is an update. All the Verizon STB's do this.
    Component cables have no communication between STB and TV. Only the HDMI cable has any 2 way communication, so there should be no compatibility issue.
    If the STB is powering off after 20-30 minutes and you cannot power it back on without a reboot, then I would guess that you have one of two issues (that I can think of anyway).
    It could be that the STB is overheating. Its designed to power down when it gets too hot and stay off until it cools down. Is the STB out in the open? Does it have anything on it, like a towel or another electronic device? Is it inside an entertainment center that has an enclosed back or front?  If so, it may just be getting hot and you may need to move it out into the open or move whatever is on it.
    If its not overheating then it may be just a lemon of a stb, I'd contact Verizon and ask them to swap it out for you.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then see if placing the iPod in airplane mode when in standby helps.
    - Reset all settings
    Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
    All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

  • Local logical standby and remote physical standby

    Dear All,
    My database version is 10.2.0.1.0(production) and Operating System Linux x86-64 OS Version Red Hat Enterprise 4
    Below is my configuration details:
    Rprimary Database:Two Nodes RAC
    StandBy Database LOCAL:Standalone database
    Standby Database Remote:Two Node RAC
    So,my question is, i want my local physical DR to convert into logical standby and
    Remote DR will operate as physical standby as it IS.
    sql>EXECUTE DBMS_LOGSTDBY.BUILD
    After executing the above statement in my production primary database will there be any performance HIT.
    And another important is that my above statement shouldn't affect my remote physical DR database.
    Just the local DR should get converted into logical standby database

    Monoj DasIn any Data Guard environment, you can have either physical or logical or even mixed[physical + logical]
    There will be no performance issue if you run the package for logical standby DBMS_LOGSTDBY.BUILD , This package provides you to manage even logical standby database.

  • ASM , TTS, and dataguard

    I am going to be migrating from Itanium (hpux) san using serviceguard and VCS, to AMD (x86_64) with ASM, I know the endian type change, and I have gone through a test of converting the database and bringing the datafiles into ASM, and importing the metadata. All good.
    The question I have is, when I bring them into ASM I create them with
    convert datafile
    '/disk1/dbs/my_tbs_f1.df',
    '/disk1/dbs/my_tbs_f2.df'
    format '+diskgroup';
    I then look at ASM to find the correct name and bring them into the database with
    TRANSPORT_DATAFILES=(
    '+DISKGROUP1/tts/datafile/my_tbs_f1.300.672929651',
    '+DISKGROUP1/tts/datafile/my_tbs_f2.286.672929651')
    What is going to happen when I run this same convert datafile on the Physical standby ? will the datafiles have the same name, or how do I keep a standard name across my databases ?
    My goal is to bring them into ASM on the primary and the physical standby, and have the oracle import them into both databases without reinstantiating.

    What is going to happen when I run this same convert datafile on the Physical standby ? will the datafiles have the same name, or how do I keep a standard name across my databases ? The datafiles will not have same name. Raise an SR with oracle support for your issue.
