Standby Database in Veritas Cluster
Can anyone point me to documentation on the standard/recommended
procedure/configuration to maintain a redundant standby Oracle
database in a Veritas cluster?
Thanks.

ORA-00235 Standby Database Controlfile problem
Dear fellow dbas,
I am just starting to become acquainted with high availability and have to solve following problem.
We have a RAC database with a standby database that is out of sync. In fact the standby database is running in async mode but archived redo logs are not applied.
They are successfully forwarded from the primary instance to the standby db though. Looking at the alert.log I discovered an ORA-00235 error - control file fixed table inconsistent due to concurrent update.
As a result of this I have a huge gap between the primary and standby database.
Can you please give me a step to step tutorial, how I can resolve this issue?
Any help is appreciated!
Many thanks,
SebastianHello Anand,
I am using 11.1.0.7.0.
My standby database is a cluster database as well. I shut both instances down using srvctl and created a standby controlfile from my primary instance, which I copied to the respective locations referred to in the spfile of my dataguard database. Afterwards I started up and issued a ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT FROM SESSION;
The database does not open and the alert.log states ORA-01124 "cannot recover datafile 1 - file is in use or recovery".
Next, the background media recovery process was shut down.
What should I do, to get my standby back running?
Should I place the primary database in backup mode and copy the datafiles to my standby db?
Afterwards I would create a standby controlfile again and overwrite the standby ones.
Maybe you assist in pointing at the next steps.
Many thanks,

How to configure standby database in a single machine
I am in Windows XP professional and oracle 9i . I want to configure a standby database for a database called proddb in the same machine. For doing this, I created a standby controlfile. But this work for the same name standby database?. How this happen ? two database with same name possible? How to create the second database (Standby) Please help?
ShijuThe Oracle Solaris Cluster concepts guide has some information on which zone model to choose:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18728_01/html/821-2682/gcbkf.html#scrolltoc
When managing a Solaris zone with the HA Zones agent, the cluster basically regards the non-global zone as a blackbox.
As such you can either start the Oracle database as part of the runlevel/SMF startup of the non-global zone, or you can use the sczsh or sczsmf component and use your own scripts to start, probe and stop the Oracle database.
Usage of the standard HA Oracle data service is not supported in combination with the HA Zones agent.
If you require a more fine grained control of services running in non-global zones, why not setup a zone cluster and then having HA Oracle failover the Oracle database between non-global zones?

Can I use data guard to create a RAC standby database for a non RAC primary
Hi,
we need to RAC our production database but the normal methods will mean a long outage. It is possible to create a standby as a single node RAC database and when ready do a graceful failover to the standby database and open it for business. The next step would be to create another RAC node from this on the original server.
servers are already cluster aware, using ASM etc
Oracle 10.2Yes, you will be able to setup RAC stnadby for a non-RAC Primary. For primary it just needs a available destination for redo shipping it doesn't matter whether it's RAC enabled or not. And ofcourse you are using 10.2 anyway only one node will be running MRP and that is too in standby mount mode.
However since you have are using You may follow below sequence.
1. Setup a new standby as RAC enabled.
2. Perform a switchover.
3. Shutdown the Old primary (which is standby now).
4. Install CRS and RDBMS on the old primary and it's new node.
5. Modify the cluster_database=TRUE and cluster_database_instances=<required number of instances>.
With above modification mount the standby database in standby mode and start MRP.
6. Introduce the database and instances to the OCR using SRVCTL add command.
7. Once you your database is synchronized with Primary do a switchover.
9. Now you can repeat step 3 to 6 on the other site too. <- if you need your secondary site to be RAC enabled too
10. Finally both the sites should be RAC enabled.
Hope this is helpful!!!
Thanks,

Question regarding removal of physical standby database?
We are running a 2 node rac cluster on linux itanium and we have setup one physical standby server. We did not use the data guard broker to setup the standby database we simply set 2 parameters log_archive_config and log_archive_dest_2.
We now are looking to remove the physical standby server and I see that the 2 parameters are dynamic so I was trying to find out if it is as simple as running the alter system comands to reove the 2 parameters?
I gues my real question is more about the syntax of removing the parameters?
Would this syntax be correct?
alter system set log_archive_config='' scope=both sid='*';
alter system set log_archive_dest_2='' scope=both sid='*';
and does it make a difference which parameter is removed first?
Thanks I appreciate any help.the standby system is also a 2 node cluster but only one of the nodes has the instance up in a mount state running in recover mode and the other instance is simply shutdown.
Thanks. -
Can Grid Control 10gR2 create a standby database when primary db uses ASM?
Does anyone know if Grid Control 10gR2 will be able to create a standby database when the primary database uses ASM for data files, redo log files, and archive log files but the standby database will use mounted disks? If it can, would it matter that the primary db will be a RAC cluster and the standby will be a single instance db?
I appreciate your reply and hope you are correct. Have you had a look at the 10gR2 Grid Control to confirm this or are you only going on published statements? The reason I ask is because previous versions of Grid Control claimed to support ASM but they would only allow you to work with them AFTER you had created a standby database manually but you couldn't actually use Grid Control to create a standby database from a primary database that had its log files on ASM disks.

Running a physical standby database in noarchivelog mode
Primary Database: 2 node rac cluster, 11.2.0.2 GI and RDBMS
Standby Database: single instance 11.2.0.2
OS: AIX 7.1
Hello,
I'm in the process of implementing a data guard standby system. To make this system simpler to admin, I want to run the standby database in NOARCHIVELOG mode. This standby is used only as a mirror of production (to be copied to a 3rd site for separate user activity) and will never be switched to active mode. Maintaining another set of archive logs seems to be redundant to me and another point of failure, so I want to disable archiving. I wanted to ask if any of the DG experts on the forums have ever had experience with this? Does anyone know if this is recommended? I've searched the Oracle Data guard documentation online... it says that the primary obviously needs to be in archive mode, but I'm not seeing anything specific about the standby. Please let me know if anyone has experience with this.
ThanksHello again;
If this is the case, then I have nothing to worry about here. Does that sound right to you?Yes.
For this :
b) monthly, shutdown this system and copy it to a 3rd site to host a separate set of business activityI would consider RMAN Duplicate in which case you may avoid the shutdown.
And for this :
resync the "mirror" with productionAll you have to do if DEFER the primary to the standby, then ENABLE and Data Guard will catch up.
--- Will post a detailed example here in a moment.
Right at the first of the year they wanted to work on our Primary server room ( Power ). What I did was switchover to the Standby but I kept log_archive_dest_state_2 on the new primary set to DEFER. Then I shutdown
all the databases at the Primary site. At the end of work two days later I started the databases at the Primary site in standby mode. Switched log_archive_dest_state_2 to ENABLE. When the databases were back in SYNC
I did another switchover and it was done. I used TAF and none of the users even noticed.
Best Regards

How to setup a Multi-instance standby database?
I was asked to setup a multi-instance standby database for a multi-instance primary database. I understand that only one of the instance will apply redo logs from the primary database, but how about the other instance? Should I mount that instance just to update the standby control file(the control file is not located in shared file system with the cluster server) even if it isn't going to apply any redo logs?
I am so confused now. Hope somebody will help me on that. Any document or tutorial will be helpful too.
Note that I am not using dataguard.
Thanks in advanceHi,
You can set up multiple instance standby..where in each instance will receive the archive logs from correpsonding primary instance. Keep them on shared location (say ASM) so that one of the instances from where recovery is started can access the archive logs and apply it.
So basically
Primary instance A <----- send archive to ---> Standby A
Primary instance B <----- send archive to ---> Standby B
Start managed recovery on A
Standby A --- > Apply archives for instance A and B

JDBC URL to connect to Standby Database
Could somebody please post the details of configuring a JDBC String in an app server (JBOSS) to connect to Standby database.
Hi,
The type, multiplicity or redundancy of the datasource connection pool can be independent of your JPA application beyond configuring global parameters. I would expect that JBoss can be setup to pool or cluster multiple JTA datasources to appear as one single pool as other servers are able to - I have not looked into this myself specifically on JBoss but you should check out Oracle RAC support - which is supported on WebLogic.
thank you

Multiple Standby Databases on same RAC nodes.
We have a 3 node Oracle 10gR2 RAC production environment on site A and a 3 node Oracle 10g RAC standby environment on site B. Both use like HW and OS - HP BL45p with RHEL AS 4.x.
Can we have heterogeneous standby databases(logical and physical) running on the same RAC nodes?
Can the 2 apply processes (MRP-manageed recovery process & LSP-logical standby process) coexists on the same set of nodes in a cluster at the same time. Are there any conflicts or limitations?
Is there any documentation that supports this?Would Active Data Guard give you the best of both worlds?
The caveat might be your SID_LIST_LISTENER setup.
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = PLSExtProc)
(ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0)
(PROGRAM = extproc)
(SID_DESC =
(global_dbname = <database1>_DGMGRL.yourdomain)
(ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0)
(sid_name = <database1>)
(SID_DESC =
(global_dbname = <database2>_DGMGRL.yourdomain)
(ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0)

I have a server with ten standbys on it currently and no issues.
As long as the version is the same you should be good. -
10.2.0.4 patch on single instance standby database
Hi All,
We have production database 10.2.0.3 running with RAC having 2 nodes on Solaris 10. We have patched this
databases to 10.2.0.4 (both nodes) on production without any issue.
We have a physical standby database (10.2.0.3) with 2 nodes on solaris 10. But we have stopped node2 sometime
back and currently it's a single instance standby database. Whe nwe are trying to apply patch to standby dataabse
it's showing both node during installation and installation fails when it tries to search for node2.
What's the solution for this problem? Any document on how to patch the single instance standby database when
production is running in RAC.I think you are basically saying that you have a 2 node RAC cluster with 1 node down (possibly permanently) and you want to just patch 1 of the nodes?
It's not overly a surprise the installer is trying to patch the other node, when as far as your inventory is concerned you have a 2 node cluster.
Have you tried running the installer with the -local option?
This should just patch your local node. Obviously the dictionary changes will get applied via MRP from the primary db.

Physical standby database in RAC system
Hi EXperts,
We have a 4 nodes 11.2 cluster system. i will set a data guard as a disaster recovery mothods.
As a physical standby database set, does we need to configure same nodes (4 nodes) in other city as primary database cluster system?
Can we set physical standby database is in 2 nodes cluster system and primary database is in 4 nodes cluster system?
Thanks explaining!
JinCan we set physical standby database is in 2 nodes cluster system and primary database is in 4 nodes cluster system?Yes. You can setup 2 node RAC as physical standby and also with different memory parameters. But, the only issue is when DB failover from primary to standby, the applications connect to 2 node RAC in place of 4 node RAC and may be overloaded.

Physical standby database implementation
Hi!
I am trying to implement a Physical standby database, I have already done it with both the primary and secondary in the same server and successfully shipped the logs and have it configured using Data Guard.
But Now I am trying to implement the Physical standby in a separate server, but the logs are not getting shipped, I am using Oracle 9i Enterprise edition. I have checked all the steps, but not able to find the reason, why the logs are not getting shipped to the standby.
Also I am not able to discover the Primary node from the Standby and I have Windows 2003 server in my standby and Windows XP Prof. in the Primary, Is this the reason, why my logs are not getting shipped?
Please help. Thanks in Advance.
RadhikaHi!,
Thanks for ur response, I am posting my alert log here... can u please help me... I probably think it is the OS issue too... Your inputs are greatly appreciated...
Thanks

Hi,
We have two nodes RAC environment on the AIX 6.1
Our requirement is to have a database for the reporting purpose in one of the node and replicate the data from source to target. Is it possible to create physical standby database in one of the node and do log shipping to another database within the node.
Any other suggestions also appreciated.
Thanks.I would first say if you are planning to create the standby for report it is for off loading the report from production database. If you create the reporting instance on the same hardware you would still e sharing if the primary service is active on the node that the reporting instance is running on. You would also be sharing the storage unless you separate the storage. If this is SAN storage you would be using the same HBA card.
It is possible to create the physical standby on another node in the cluster you just need to make sure to give the standby a different name. You would also need to make sure that the datfiles ,controlfile, redologs and archivelogs are not in the same location as the primary. One more thing to remember this will double you storage if you plan to use the same storage where the primary is located. -
Data Guard - Grid Control - Standby database
Heys,
now I have to RAC Clusters. The next step would be to setup a standby database to prepare a graceful switchover.
But what are the next steps ?
I am currently installing GridControl on a seperate host with the option: Enterprise Manager10g Grid Control Using an Existing Database
The installation is still running....
What are the steps ? Any documentation ? Any tutorials ?
Do I need to install agents on each client in the cluster ?
What about the name resolution ?
Any listener configuration necessary ?
Is the configuration done via data guard command line ?
ChristianBear in mind that the standby creation wizard in Grid Control will only create a non-RAC standby. Once you get to Grid Control 10.2.0.5 and your databases are in 11g you will be able to use the Grid Control convert to RAC wizard on your standby. Prior to that you will have to convert the standby to RAC manually or follow the above mentioned paper and create the standby by hand and then import it into Grid Control.
