Standby DB Licensing

I have a question regarding licensing of standby DB's and was hoping someone might have some info on this. Is the following a true statement?
Oracle standby servers need to be fully licensed if they are “hot standby” servers that can be used for production SQL queries. Some sources say that cold standby servers used less than 10 days per year do not need to be licensed, but you should verify this with your Oracle representative or the Oracle Store, as Oracle license policies change frequently.
I couldn't find anything by searching the Oracle site or Meta-Link so I figured someone else might have been down this road before. If the cold standby statement is true it would affect the way I plan to do my stanby DB.

The answer you are looking for is your quoted paragraph.
Oracle standby servers need to be fully licensed

cold standby servers used less than 10 days per year

Do contact an Oracle representative as thier answers are the ones that really count.

  • Difference in License Types

    Hi all,
In the license portal I have a "SF - Standby CPU license" . I want to know the restrictions or when to use this license.
    Regards,
    Luz Rodriguez

    Hello Luz,
as far as I  remember, this license gives you the limited right to access and use the copy of the ASE in case of an interruption of your production.
I would guess you have a warm or cold standby ASE setup in your environment.

    Hi
Our customer has purchased 2 x L-ASA-AC-E-5520= Anyconnect Essentials VPN Licenses (750 Users)
Ive installed both activated licenses as per the cisco guides, I didnt get any errors on the install. I did a reload on both, they are both back up and running as active/standby but when I do a sh ver the license still shows "ASA 5520 VPN Plus License"
Am I being dumb and has this worked successfully or should it not now display Anyconnect when I do a sh ver
Any help would be much appreciated on this one please
    Regards

    Thanks Marvin
Below is the show ver, but I was kind of expecting there to be a mention of Anyconnect if I had activated the license

  • Single license / Standby Server Preparedness

I have a production server with a Standard Edition One single CPU license. I need to be ready in case the server has a problem and I need to stand up a new server.
At what point is it required to buy another license?
    Case 1:
Standby Server: Oracle is not installed.
Primary Server does level 0, level 1 backups to the Flash Recovery Area. The backups are copied the Standby server each night. Furthermore the archive logs are copied to Standby as they are created.
Recovery would involve, installing Oracle and then using rman to restore and recover.
    Case 2:
Standby Server: Oracle is installed, it only has the sample schema and is shutdown.
Primary Server does level 0, level 1 backups to the Flash Recovery Area. The backups are copied the Standby server each night. Furthermore the archive logs are copied to Standby as they are created.
Recovery would involve, starting Oracle and then using rman to restore and recover from the FRA.
    Case 3:
Standby Server: Oracle is installed, communicates to Primary via Net8, has a copy of the primary database, is mounted and applying archive logs throughout the day.
Primary Server does level 0, level 1 backups to the Flash Recovery Area. The backups are copied the Standby server each night. Furthermore the archive logs are copied to Standby as they are created. Standby applies the arcivelogs via .bat script.
Recovery would involve, applying the last archive log and opening.
I’m trying to find the fastest road to recovering to a new server without needing to shell out $5k for a license and another $1k per year for support.

    >
I'm pretty sure doing any of my proposed solutions is of the developer license, as this a production environment. It seems like it a violation of the license to have Oracle installed on 2 servers even if one is shutdown.
    >
That would be my opinion as well.
    >
It's like Oracle requires us to install it on the 2nd server only when the 1st server it out of commission. I really don't know.
    >
Still don't know why you don't have an image backup of the disk partition that Oracle consumes.
I have multiple OS's installed on machines in their own partitions. On Linux you can easily use the DD command to copy an entire partition, sector by sector, to a backup file. Restoring it takes only a few minutes even for a 20 GB partition. An Oracle-only installation is nowhere near that size.
I can restore the OS or an installed app in a few minutes from an image backup. This is really easy on Linux since there is no registry to deal with. At some point you need to start heading towards virtual disks.
Using Oracle's VM technology you just have a VM template (image) that gets deployed to a server. You only need the license for the servers you actually deploy to. So if a server goes down you redeploy the OS template to another server and keep right on trucking.
You should really look into VM and start getting familiar with it. It is a game changer.
The Oracle VM Templates main page is
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/database-092479.html
They have a VM Templates for RAC also.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/rac-template-11grel2-166623.html
Using Oracle's virtual box you have plenty of pre-built developer VMs available for download
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/community/developer-vm/index.html
And plenty of Oracle-provided articles about how to use VirtualBox and those templates
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/howto-use-vb-templates-1695904.html
I have a single server that has multiple VMs running on it for different OSs including Windows XP. I rarely pick up any viruses because each system is in its own virtual machine. Periodically I just redeploy a VM template for XP and start fresh. Important files and page files are on on high-speed shared drives.
You are missing out on the revolution if you haven't ventured into the VM area yet.

Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control provides access to the complete set of Data Guard 10.2 features. Limited monitoring-only Data Guard functionality is available in Enterprise Manager Database Control. It's not a licensing issue, it's an inherent limitation of dbcontrol. It (dbcontrol) works with a single database. To create/manage a DG setup, you have to be able to work with multiple databases, hence the only flavor of OEM that will do it is GC.

  • License for RMAN catalog standby database ?

    Hi
I am planning to to setup a RMAN catalog for a large business that they have many databases.
I know that RMAN catalog does not need a separate license.
Does anybody know that if I setup a standby database for the catalog then do I need a separate license or it can be implemented without any license requirement ?
    Thanks
    Kamran

Is it "yes" that you know the answer to the question ?
Is it "yes" that he needs a separate licence ?
Is it "yes" that it can be implemented without any licence requirement ?
Do you really think that your answer is helpful ?  Or are you trying to be an irritant ?

  • Info on licensing issues of standby databases/Oracle Data Guard

    Hi All,
Could anyone possibly give me some information on licensing issues of standby databases/Oracle Data Guard? Links to some electronic articles or journals might be useful. I am unable to find the appropriate info and need this quite urgently for my dissertation asap as my deadline is this approaching.
    Thanks in advance

Paul Drake posted a reply to a similar question on the Oracle-L mailing list that pointed out that the License Agreement
    http://oraclestore.oracle.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?media=os_local_license_agreement&section=11365&minisite=10021&respid=22372&grp=STORE&language=US
    states, in part,
"Failover: Your license for the following programs, Oracle Database (Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition or Standard Edition One) and Oracle Internet Application Server (Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Standard Edition One or Java Edition) includes the right to run the licensed program(s) on an unlicensed spare computer in a failover environment for up to a total of ten separate days in any given calendar year. Any use beyond the right granted in the previous sentence must be licensed separately and the same license metric must be used when licensing the program(s)."
which seems to open a bit of wiggle room depending on how the term "run" is defined. This is probably also an area where your Oracle sales rep may have a little more flexibility to negotiate

  • Asa failover & SSL vpn license question

with a failover pair, if you want to purchase an SSL license, do you have to purchase the same license for each one, or can they 'share' a license since only one will ever be active?

    Steven,
You must purchase license for each and every device that you want to enable SSL Feature. It does not matter if the chassis is in active or standby mode in failover, you need a separate license.

  • About License synchronization on 4507R-E

    hello ,everyone.
i got a mission that i need to sychronous a  license from an old SUP7-E to a new one, the license level is ipbase ,and it has been installed on the chassis 4507-E,then i looked up the documents from cisco.com  and find a way to make a license synchronization in my case.
        step 1.
change the license boot level from ipbase to lanbase
         conf t
         no license boot level ipbase
         step2.
backup the license to a usb disk
         license save usb0:ipbase.lic
         license save cre usb0:ipbase1.lic
then check it out to make sure its avaliability .
        more usb0:ipbase.lic
        more usb0:ipbase1.lic
delete the license after reload it.
        reload
        license clear ipbase
        yes
        write memory
        reload
then wait the two  supervisors to became a RPR mode.
install license on  active SUP7-E and restore its licence boot level
       license install usb0:ipbase.lic
       license install usb0:ipbase1.lic
       conf t
       license boot level ipbase
       exit
        write memory
after they have  been  completely synchronizd to RPR mode, reload standby Supervisor.
    hw module 4 reload
after the two supervisors finish the synchronization once again,
    reload the active supervisor
    reload
press ctrl+c during the period of active supervisor restart to make the system enter rommon prompt.
connect the console cable to the standby supervisor ,and excute the following commands:
      conf t
      redundancy
      mode sso
      exit
      no license boot level ipbase
      end
      write memory
      reload
in this case ,the 4507R-E is running VSS with one other 4507R-E which also has one SUPE-7 ,i need to use one of them
to synchronous ipbase license with a new SUP7-E .do i need to convert it from VSS mod to switch mode at first?then make it
with the above mentioned method. thanks.

I still have not found anything on this matter. Anyone?

  • IPad unresponsive after iOS 8.02 update, doesn't show up in iTunes, hardware reset (home and standby buttons both held down for ten seconds) not working

I have a 32GB iPad mini that was purchased new in June of this year. A little while ago, I started the iOS 8.02 download while it was plugged into a wall socket using an official apple wall to USB plug and an official apple thunderbolt cable. I then left for 25 minutes to get some food.
On coming back, I discovered the iPad with a black screen showing the apple logo. I thought this was just an ordinary part of the update, it was restarting or something after installation, so I thought nothing of it. Then, after another minute or two, the screen flashed blue and then went completely black.
Puzzled, I waited for another second and the apple logo reappeared as if the iPad was restarting again. However, after a few minutes, this happened again. This has been going on for the last half an hour, and I was wondering has anybody experienced this before.
As I stated in the title, it won't show up in iTunes, and the hardware reset or whatever it's called doesn't work. Also, bear in mind I had issues syncing it with iTunes the night before and it also seemed to crash a few times last night, restarting the iPad and bringing it to the blank screen with the apple logo for a few seconds before going to the lock screen. That didn't happen at all this morning though.
The iPad is not jailbroken, however, it does have licenses for gba4iOS, which is still installed on it, and a VPN license installed on it by the Hola app, which I deleted but never bothered deleting the license for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Colin how are you?
I updated my IPAD yesterday and have the exact same problem.
Itunes does not recognize my ipad. Home and standby also doesnt work.
Also have the blue thing every few minutes and the apple logo but it never goes beyond it.
    Have you solved the issue?

  • Creating standby database from ASM production database in standard edition

    Hi,
I am using oracle 10g release 2 standard edition. I recently created a database instance and wanted to create a standby database instance. After sorting out how to achieve this without managed standby and data guard I finally got it working and the shipped archive logs are applied and working well on the standby database.
Now I am thinking of re-creating my production database and using ASM for storage managment. By doing this can a standby database still be created from a primary database using ASM? I want to be sure I can before I commit to using ASM for the production instance and manually creating a standby database from that instance.
Note: I am using standard edition not enterprise edition.

    Hi
For Oracle SE standby, you can visit www.anbultechnologies.co.uk , they have a brilliant product name DRMC which is Automatic disaster recovery solution with automatic failover in case primary goes down due to any reason.
We are using this product for more than 2 years and it works like a dream using Oracle Standard Edition. We have depolyed more databases and Standby solution within the prices of 2 EE edition licenses.
You can give ma try as well.

  • Failover fails (turns off) after License Upgrade for 5520s.

    Hi-
I recently did a license upgrade on an active/standy pair of 5520's (8.04) for a 2 to 50 SSL VPN upgrade. According to Cisco Document #70390 it should have been a no brainer...but it wasn't. According to the doc upgrading the activation key of the primary then doing a wr mem along with a physical shutdown causes the secondary to become active. But in my experience as soon as the new activation key was entered failover broke. This caused the secondary to remain inactive and I had to reboot both to get the network back up (of course only one could be active and so I took the secondary offline so I could upgrade it via serial). So I brought the secondary up (after activation key upgrade) and failover did not kickin. I did a sh failover on both machines and both said failover was off. I would do the failover command on the primary and secondary...nothing. It wasn't until I did a no failover active on the secondary that failover finally started to work properly.
Anyone else have this experience? I have a ticket open with Cisco for the Doc # 70390 for clarification via my experiences. Any input would be appreciated on this. I was working on the assumption that I would have 2 to 3 minute outage as the primary rebooted but turned out to be a longer outage than anticipated and higher ups were pissed...
    Thxs. --Rob.

    Hi Rob,
Firstly - thanks for posting all your findings with this issue, otherwise I would have followed the Cisco doc too!
I just have a couple of queries though... after failover is disabled and the ASA's remain in their current state, rather than use the console port to perform the license upgrade, would the "standby" ASA still be assigned the 'standby' IP address, even though failover is disabled? For example, the active had the inside ip address 1.1.1.1 and the standby was assigned 1.1.1.2 on its inside interface. Would this configuration state be the same when failvoer was disabled?
The reason for asking, is whether the upgrade could be performed remotely (whether this is a sensible idea is another thing!). So could I connect to the "standby" unit by IP to upgrade the license?
The second query is regarding the reboot of both units (as opposed to shutting down). Following the license upgrade on both units, could you just reboot both units ("standby" then "active"), and when they both come back up, enable failover? I would assume the previous "active" unit would again become active and failover restored??
    Thanks,
    Tony

  • It is possible to apply redo while the standby is open in read only mode ?

    Hi,
    I am using Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.1.0)
Step 1: Two node RAC is Configured.
Step 2: One node Data Guard RAC is configured.( i,e Standby is one node RAC).
    Primary:
    SQL> select open_mode,database_role,PROTECTION_MODE,PROTECTION_LEVEL from v$database;
    OPEN_MODE DATABASE_ROLE PROTECTION_MODE PROTECTION_LEVEL
READ WRITE PRIMARY MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY
    Standby:
    SQL> select open_mode,database_role,PROTECTION_MODE,PROTECTION_LEVEL from v$database;
    OPEN_MODE DATABASE_ROLE PROTECTION_MODE PROTECTION_LEVEL
READ ONLY WITH APPLY PHYSICAL STANDBY MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY
    Question:
I have not purchased active dataguard license.
In my case In Data Guard RAC it is possible to apply redo while the database is open in read only mode?
    Thanks
    Solaiman

"READ ONLY WITH APPLY" in V$DATABASE.OPEN_MODE means Active Data Guard is enabled.
Oracle code cannot check if you have the right license: it is up to you to know which license you have for your database environments.

  • Transcoding Sessions unregistered with CUCM from standby gateway of CUBE with HA usingHSRP

I have 2 C2921 routers working fine untill I enbale CUBE with HA. After configureing HSRP on ethernet interface, the transcoding and conferencing resources were unregistered on HSRP standby router even though I bind the sccp ccm group to physical interface.
Raised Cisco TAC, but they also could not solve yet. Cisco TAC recommanded to have loopback or another interface.
I configure gi02/ without HSRP configuration, but still the transcoding and conferencing resources are not getting registered. Cisco TAC is still analysing the logs.
I am hoping I get resolution here. Configuration of standby router is below.

I don't have an answer for you but would like to add a note.  I was initially configuring and troubleshooting some things on a HA cube pair recently.  I was using external DNS for some dial-peer session target lookup and noticed the non-active CUBE could not lookup DNS.  When the non-active CUBE became active it could all of a sudden resolve DNS.  So I am speculating that something to do with the HA configuration is disallowing communication or bindings preventing routing to the rest of the network from the non-active CUBE.  I ended up putting local host records on the router to make me feel better.  I am guessing whatever is causing that might be related to the reason your SCCP is loosing registration on the non-active CUBE.
Jaime says what you are trying to do is not supported anyway.  I would like a a little clarification on that but what I believe to be supported is if you need transcoding or mtp resources for this CUBE only (Not registered to UCM) then LTI is a good option.

Hope any of this helps.  I am really commenting so I can track any updates to this thread. :)
