Standby Installation

Hello Helpful Souls,
I need help with Oracle Standby installation and recovery. I am Not a DBA ofcourse. This is the existing setup.
1. 2 Machines "Beta" and "Standby" with 2 Oracle 8.1.6 Enterprise complete installation less Management Server. Both are Windows NT 4.0 ServicePack 6a machines
2. Have only 1 schema with max DB size as of now 1GB. Can grow but not rapidly.
3. Using DBA Studio for high level maintenance (like creating TABLESPACE, TABLES, VIEWS,etc..)
4. "Beta" is in "archiving mode"
5. "Standby" is in Standby mode. Did that using following sequence.
     5a. Created stby control file in Beta using ALTER DATABASE CREATE STANDBY CONTROLFILE AS 'c:\stbycf.f';
     5b. Copied all the "Beta" files to "Standby" (.dbf,.ora,.log). Also copied the control file.
     5c. Changed init.ora in "Standby" commenting the original control_files and making the copied control file as control_files="d:\oracle\oradata\instance\stbycf.f"
     5d. Database is then started and mounted only without opening. "Alter database mount Standby database"
Initial Testing
1. Copied all the archive files from "Beta" to "Standby" (sometimes forced the archiving by "alter system switch logfile").
2. Issued the command "recover automatic standby database" on the "Standby" machine and found that all the archive files copied are archived properly.
3. I checked the thread#, sequence# from V$log_history and they both the machines are same. Also the data is correct when I open standby in readonly mode after which i switch back to standby mode again.
Help Needed
Please help me how to do this in an automatic manner. Just need a Standby machine.
When i tried to archive (second destination) of "Beta" instance to "Standby" machine using Net8 connection, it crashed my "Beta" when network between "Beta" and "Standby" is disrupted/broken.
Is this always the approach ? I have no clue what are the approaches or How to do it. Please advice
Thanks
Bharani Kannan

Be sure that you specify a reopen time in your archive log parameter ie:
log_archive_dest_2="SERVICE=STANDBY.WORLD MANDATORY REOPEN=60
Failure to do so will hang the instance after it runs out of redo logs.
For additional 'insurance' you could also increase the number or size of your redo logs.

  • Yet another standby question...

    Hi gurus,
    Please help to resolve the quiz. I have completed manual physical standby installation. It is up and running. I then decided to install Grid Control and to use Data Guard for the standby creation. I've successfully installed GC, deployed all agents, I can see my previous standbys, life is good in short. Now, when I am trying to create the second standby for my production database using the Data Guard I stuck on a logical question:
    On the step 3 of Data Guard standby creation, there is a note, saying:
    The instance name (also referred to as the SID) must be unique on the standby host.
    Yeah, fair enough. But i can't understand what should I do next? I have:
    db_name YELLOW - primary prod
    db_name YELLOW - standby prod 1st
    and i need db_name YELLOW - standby 2nd
    But I can't create it on the same server where the first standby resides.. What options do I have? Do I need to create the second standby on another server? Do I need to kill 1st standby? Is there any way to avoid this conflict? I am confused. I have no equipment for TWO standby servers... I thought I can install there up to 9 standbys.. But it seems to be a problem.. And definitely, I cannot give my second standby other name than YELLOW as all my applications are strongly tied on db_name...
    Friends, please clarify this if you can. I am kinda lost in here..
    Thanks as usual,
    Maria

    well, that's a good question! :)
    because I don't have spare server for the standby. the question is not about: 'should I or should not put more than one standbys in one server' , but more about: 'is there any way to put two standbys with the identical db_names in one server'. I know that I probably sound unprofessional, but I just wanna know.. If the answer is 'no way', I will kill the first standby then and recreate the second one using DG with the correct name.
    Thanks for writing to me,
    M.

  • Windows standby feature disabled after lookout 4.5.1 b18 installation

    I am just upgrading my development system - using an HP8510w running Windows XP professional.  Haing the need to support some legacy systems in Lookout 4.5.1, I am having to install this software as well as the more recent Lookout 6.1.  On installing 4.5 only, after the installation the standby feature on the laptop disappeared.  Does anyone have an ideas what might have caused this?  I have tried a number of options, of which I am getting now where.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Ian

    Did you install the NI Keyboard Driver with Lookout 4.5?  I'm not sure if it is installed with 4.5 by default.
    This driver will cause a similar problem. So try to modify the 4.5, if the driver is installed, remove it.

  • Flash installer and uninstaller stays in processes and keeps laptop form going to standby

                   i have a fujitsu lifebook t-series 4020d and any time in i have to install flash player or inunstall it it stays in processes and makes it so it won't go into standby till you go to task manager and end the process. my brother has the same laptop and the same thing happens to his. just seeing if this bug was reported. hopefully this can be fixed because it is kinda anoying with all these updates that seem to happen.

    oh sorry it is winxp tablet edition and firefox 3.6.18. this is not a browser issue though it is a flash installer/uninstaller issue. it should never stay in the processes after it is finished  i got the installer and uninstaller from this web site and it does updates when the comptuer is restarted. after the update is done it stays in the processes and when you try and put comptuer to sleep, standby, even shutting down and restarting you have to go to task manager and en the flahs installer it used. if you try to standby,sleep,restart,shutdown it don't do it. as soon as you end the flash process it goes to standby,sleep,restart,shutdown if that bmakes sense. it hangs on the installer.

  • Problems in Dialog instance installation for ECC6.0(ABAP+JAVA)

    Does anyone can help me what should be a procedure of installing Dialog instance for ECC 6.0 with both ABAP + Java Stacks.
    When installing app server do we also choose ABAP and Java or just ABAP. Installation manual does not cover this and when we run the sapinst we have following problem:
    <u>The following are the activities that I have done as pre-reqs on the standby on the server that is to host dialog instance</u>
    I have mounted the following file systems on ddrsap02. Created the local filesystem /usr/sap/DSP/D00 and NFS mounted the others…
    /dev/appsaph      5505024   5503856    1%        5     1% /usr/sap/DSP/D00 <b>(is this required or SAPINST should create it itself)</b>
    ddrsap00:/stage   419430400 149761708   65%    90835     1% /stage

    ddrsap12:/usr/sap/trans     2752512   1084932   61%     5107     3% /usr/sap/trans
    Then when I run the sapinst from ddrsap02 to install the DI I get the following error

    Am I missing some pre-reqs or variable definitions?
    I was going through the documentation and it says that  /sapmnt/DSP/exe should be a local filesystem for a DI on a separate server. Will this create a problem ?
    Also they talk about starting sapinst with the variable SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME set to ddrsap02. I have tried this also
    We are also not 100% sure about the settings for parameters:
    rdisp/mssserv
    rdisp/mssserv_internal
    Accorss Devault Instance and Services Instance profile.
    When we define it as per installation GUIDE (Abap+Java page 64) we get the popup message in SAPINST:
    <b><html>Profile parameter <em>rdisp/msserv_internal</em> is not set for instance DVEBMGS01/DSP on host dprsap01.<p>You have to set the parameter in the default profile and restart the instance.<p>For further information refer to SAP Note 821875.</html></b>
    Other errors follow shortly.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi ,
    are you able to resolve this error :Profile parameter rdisp/msserv_internal is not set for instance DVEBMGS01/DSP on host dprsap01.
    You have to set the parameter in the default profile and restart the instance.
    For further information refer to SAP Note 821875.</html>
    ? if yes , pls let me know , I am stuck with same issue while installing dialog instance .

  • SAP NetWeaver 7.01 Java installation on MSCS and Log shipping for DR

    Hi Experts,
    Can anyone please explain if below is possible :
    - We have installed Netweaver 7.01 Java application server on Microsoft clustering which is working perfectly ok.
    -Now we are looking at building a DR solution for the above installation using SQL Server 2008 Log-shipping. The DR site has the same MSCS configuration as the primary site.
    -If we log-ship the production database and create a secondary database in "standby" or "norecovery" mode, how do we install a Passive SAP Central instance in case we want to failover from the primary to secondar ?
    - We know that we have the primary database log-shipped to the secondary site and in the event of failure we can switch the roles and make secondary as primary and then perform the system copy steps on the MSCS. the drawback here is that it will take a long time to bring the system online if we perform the system copy. Our RTO is one hour only so this is not acceptable.
    Question : Is there anyway we can install the Central Services and Applicaiton servers beforehand on the secondary site on the secondary log-shipped database so that in the event of failure all we do is bring the secondary database primary and then start the SAP on the secondary site ?
    If yes then can anyone point me the any SAP note or documentation that has the details of how to do this.
    I have already looked at 1101017, 965908 but its not clear how we can perform the installation on the JAVA stack only.
    We want to implement similar to what is shows in the below diagram :
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_apo/helpdata/en/fc/33c028d58511d386ee00a0c930df15/content.htm
    Appreciate if someone can assist in resolving the above query.
    Thank you.
    RA

    Thanks Markus for your reply.
    I did looked at the HA web page from SAP and configured MSCS for HA but there's no information regarding DR setup. All it says is setup a log shiping which we already know but there's no procedure to setup SAP on the DR site(Passive SAP central instance)
    My original question still stands :
    - Is system copy the only option that we need to perform at the DR site in the event of failure ( Assumption is that we ieve make the secondary database as primary and also sync file system for JAVA using SAN replication technologies)
    - We have to achieve an RTO of 1 hour which is not possible in this case as performing system copy using MSCS HA option will take few hours to setup and test.
    -The link "http://help.sap.com/saphelp_apo/helpdata/en/fc/33c028d58511d386ee00a0c930df15/content.htm" shows that we can have SAP PAssive central instance. Whats the procedure of installing this Passive instance on the secondary site so in the event of failure all we do is make the secondary database primary and bring the SAP system online(installed already - no system copy performed) and also file system is already is sync.
    Thank you.

  • Help!! Kernel panics after installation!!

    Hi,
    I am new to Arch Linux (migrating from Fedora). I am having some problems with the installation on my Sony VAIO CW (C2D, Nvidia GT230M). At first I couldn't get past the installation of X in the Beginner's guide, but after some tweaking with conf files I finally got it to work. But after reboot, kernel panic occured. This started happening intermittently from there onwards. Then I tried to install GNOME which failed miserably as in it panics and crashes everytime system starts.
    Then I tried KDE and things are much better compared to GNOME. The problem is whenever I try logging into a new KDE session, kernel panics. Only KDE Failsafe mode works (with sound). I honestly dont know what to do as I have no idea why the problem is occuring also. I plan to stay with Arch, as nouveau works much better than it used to in Fedora (3d support). Can anybody help with this issue?

  • Satellite L40 won't shut down with power connected, and won't go in standby

    Hi everybody. I hope someone can help me. Basically, there are two problems: one with shutting the laptop (Satellite L40-17U (Vista 32-bit Home Premium SP1) ) down when the power is connected, and one with closing the lid and putting it to sleep.
    1. Since a few weeks, it suddenly doesn't want to shut down, whenever the power is connected. When it is on battery, it will shut down. When the power is connected and I try shutting it down, it seems like it shuts down (all activity ceases and the LEDs go off) for about 1 or 2 seconds, and then it goes back on.
    2. When I close the lid (all settings in Vista are set to put the laptop in 'sleep' status when the lid is closed) the laptop goes into a state from which it can only be recovered by shutting it down by pressing the on/off button for about 10 seconds to completely shut it down. When closing the lid, only the battery LED keeps blinking orange (the way it should be), but apparently the laptop keeps consuming power, because when I reboot it later (first having to shut it down as described above) the battery tends to be quite a emptier than it was before rebooting it (like going from 100% to 65% in 30 minutes, while being in 'sleep' state). Also, when I open the lid, the other LEDs do go on again (green), but nothing happens.
    After rebooting by first pressing the on/off button for 10 seconds to shut it down, I frequently get a message that Windows could not be started, and have to run System Repair.
    I've just done a completely clean installation with the product recovery CD (didn't install SP1 yet), upgraded the BIOS to v1.90, but the problem remains.
    I'm afraid my only option will be to bring it away for a warranty repair, but knowing that these repairs can take weeks, I'd prefer to try a solution anyone here could recommend me first. If you have any ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Daniel Breslauer

    Hi guys
    Never had such issue on my notebook but regarding to another users here in the forum the BIOS might help to solve such strange notebook behavior
    To be honest the shut down issue is not known to me I noticed an standby issue on my notebook but the BIOS update helped.
    Therefore I recommend updating the BIOS firstly.
    If the issue will still appear, then the ASP should take a look into the notebook.
    Good luck

  • Multiple oracle home installation

    I am going to install oracle 11g2 on hpux server. The server already has 10g on it and the plan is to run both for sometimes.
    Unfortunately, IUnfortunately, I don’t have prior experience installing multi-homed oracle software and I
    need help on how to supply the oracle home directory name to the installer:
    Do I have to supply the installation (OUI) with the oracle home directory: i.e
    Exiting oracle home: /u00/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1
    For the new oracle home: /u00/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_2
    Is this correct?
    thank you,
    Lou

    What I did was create two profiles. My OS is similar, but NOT the same
    My default is Oracle 11.
    However I need a way to go back between Oracle Homes so I created an "o10g.profile" and a "o11g.profile"
    o10g.profile
    TMP=/tmp; export TMP
    TMPDIR=$TMP; export TMPDIR
    export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle
    unset ORACLE_HOME
    export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0
    #export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
    export TZ=CST6CDT
    export ORA_OCI_NO_OPTIMIZED_FETCH=1
    ORA_OCI_NO_OPTIMIZED_FETCH=1; export ORA_OCI_NO_OPTIMIZED_FETCH
    export ORACLE_SID=STANDBY
    export ORACLE_TERM=xterm
    #export TNS_ADMIN= Set if sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora, etc. are not in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
    export NLS_LANG=AMERICAN;
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    # Set shell search paths
    unset PATH
    PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin; export PATH
    export PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
    #CLASSPATH
    CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/JRE:$ORACLE_HOME/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/jlib
    CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$ORACLE_HOME/network/jlibNotice the unset ORACLE_HOME at the top, this is key. Also the unset PATH.
    Now compare it to my o11g.profile file
    TMP=/tmp; export TMP
    TMPDIR=$TMP; export TMPDIR
    export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle
    unset ORACLE_HOME
    export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0
    #export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
    export TZ=CST6CDT
    export ORA_OCI_NO_OPTIMIZED_FETCH=1
    ORA_OCI_NO_OPTIMIZED_FETCH=1; export ORA_OCI_NO_OPTIMIZED_FETCH
    export ORACLE_SID=PRIMARY
    export ORACLE_TERM=xterm
    #export TNS_ADMIN= Set if sqlnet.ora, tnsnames.ora, etc. are not in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
    export NLS_LANG=AMERICAN;
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    # Set shell search paths
    unset PATH
    PATH=/usr/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin; export PATH
    export PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
    #CLASSPATH
    CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/JRE:$ORACLE_HOME/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/jlib
    CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$ORACLE_HOME/network/jlibIts probably a great idea to review the document Srini refers to. However this is a short and sweet example. In my case I can issue a
    source o10g.profileAnd be on Oracle 10. So to install the other version I created the profile for it and then then used it to switch to that ENV for the install.

  • How to Create Manual Standby for a Oracle 11g RAC with ASM to Single Instan

    Hi All,
    I have a task to configure a Single Instance Standby Database with ASM for 2-node Primary RAC+ASM database.
    Version using : 11.1.0.6 Oracle 11g --- *" STANDARD EDITION "* Please note datagaurd will not be supported in standard edition.
    Primary database - 2 -Node RAC using ASM storage (All datafiles, redologs, controfile and archive logs)
    Need to setup a single instance standby database manually and than using scripts to transfer the archive logs from primary server to standby server to do recovery time to time.
    Please let me know if there are any configuration document(s) which can help me to set the manual standby? or need your kind help to give your valuable ideas how to go in above situation.
    Thanks in advance

    Well if the archive logs are stored in ASM on the primary nodes, you almost definitely want to be using RMAN to access them. Then to transfer between primary and standby there are many options, this is essentially the step that Data Guard takes care of - so if you (and I) are running Standard Edition, this is the part to "worry" about.
    I'm not really sure what you mean by this:
    As in standard edition the archive destination will be on ASMI don't think the Edition of Oracle (Standard or Enterprise) dictates where and how you store your archive logs, but it's possible I've misunderstood what you mean...SE dictates that database storage for RAC will be ASM, including archive log files. Anything else is not officially supported. I haven't tested but it may be that you can use LOG_ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST to specify a local filesystem for archive log files as well.
    If that doesn't work you'll have to script rman "backup as copy" jobs regularly and then transport the results of that.

    By the way, it seems Robert has been pretty helpful, it's polite to give him some points dude. And since this is your thread, not mine, give him a "helpful" from me too :p
    El DBA
    Incidentally if you are forced down the RMAN backup as copy route then this will likely throw your current backup retention strategy somewhat, you'll need to think carefully about when an archivelog can be deleted following backup, how many times it might be backed up and so on. I do understand, and have argued for, the use of SE RAC. I also understand and have argued for and implemented manually managed standby a number of times. However by the time your primary database is a RAC instance and you need a standby for DR etc then you really have to look very seriously at whether Standard Edition is still the right investment or not. You will be spending a lot of DBA time managing and troubleshooting this, and you will find that it is less reliable than the off the shelf solution. I suspect that you are very close to the point where an EE installation becomes a worthwhile investment here.

  • X200s on Windows XP Pro - System process around 50% after Standby or Hibernate

    I have an x200s with the SU9300 1.2Ghz processor.  I'm running with a clean installation of Windows XP Pro.  I noticed less-than-expected battery life and found that after leaving the computer on for a number of hours (let's say overnight) and returning from Standby or Hibernate, I find that my "System" process takes up around 20-55% but usually hovers at 49-50% when the machine is idle.  The "System Idle Process" will take up the remaining 50%.  This is observed in the Windows Task Manager.
    On my x60s with a core duo processor (and all my other desktops and laptops) the System process will  usually be 0% when idle and the "System Idle Process" will be at 99%.
    A restart of the computer will fix this issue until I go into Standby or Hibernate again.  I usually went for days and sometimes weeks without restarting my x60s.  This issue will cause me to get 30% less battery life and will make my system slower to respond, even when I'm typing this post, for example.
    Anyone have experience or thoughts on this?  Thank you

    Any thoughts from anyone out there?

  • IPad unresponsive after iOS 8.02 update, doesn't show up in iTunes, hardware reset (home and standby buttons both held down for ten seconds) not working

    I have a 32GB iPad mini that was purchased new in June of this year. A little while ago, I started the iOS 8.02 download while it was plugged into a wall socket using an official apple wall to USB plug and an official apple thunderbolt cable. I then left for 25 minutes to get some food.
    On coming back, I discovered the iPad with a black screen showing the apple logo. I thought this was just an ordinary part of the update, it was restarting or something after installation, so I thought nothing of it. Then, after another minute or two, the screen flashed blue and then went completely black.
    Puzzled, I waited for another second and the apple logo reappeared as if the iPad was restarting again. However, after a few minutes, this happened again. This has been going on for the last half an hour, and I was wondering has anybody experienced this before.
    As I stated in the title, it won't show up in iTunes, and the hardware reset or whatever it's called doesn't work. Also, bear in mind I had issues syncing it with iTunes the night before and it also seemed to crash a few times last night, restarting the iPad and bringing it to the blank screen with the apple logo for a few seconds before going to the lock screen. That didn't happen at all this morning though.
    The iPad is not jailbroken, however, it does have licenses for gba4iOS, which is still installed on it, and a VPN license installed on it by the Hola app, which I deleted but never bothered deleting the license for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Colin how are you?
    I updated my IPAD yesterday and have the exact same problem.
    Itunes does not recognize my ipad. Home and standby also doesnt work.
    Also have the blue thing every few minutes and the apple logo but it never goes beyond it.
    Have you solved the issue?

    You do not change the dbname of the physical standby database. They always must have the same name as the primary.
    Here is a snippet from my standby initialization file for a 9i installation. Notice the parameter LOCK_NAME_SPACE that was replaced in 10g with DB_UNIQUE_NAME
    db_file_name_convert=('E:\PRIMA','E:\PHYST')
    db_name='PRIMA'
    instance_name='PHYST'
    service_names='PHYST'
    lock_name_space='PHYST'
    log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=E:\PHYST\ARCHIVE'
    log_archive_start=TRUE
    log_archive_format='%t_%s.arc'
    log_file_name_convert=('E:\PRIMA','E:\PHYST')Kind regards

    Then only it can communicated.
