Star-rating won't update on export

Hello,
when i edit my RAW-files i allways use the stars to rate them before i export them to JPEG.
Sometimes after a while i go over them again, edit some more and occasionally change the rating.
What i have discovered is that when i overwrite them (with the standard Lightroom export function) the ratings do not update.
Is this something one of you can confirm or does this just happen on my computer? And is this a bug or just a mistake on my side?
Thanks, Philipp

Don't think it's a bug per se, but you need to update the metadata for the exported photos you have overwritten. You can do this by using "Read Metadata From File" on the Metadata menu, or by synchronizing the folder containing the exports, and "scanning for metadata updates".

  • Export to JPG with Star Rating

    I am using LR4.2.
    I have done it before while using LR3 - when exporting to JPEG, I like to include the star rating with those JPEG for easy sorting down the line (after finishing the photo in Photoshop). However, it seems like with LR4, something changed and now my star ratings no longer get exported when creating JPEGs. Is there a way to get that back? I have selected the option to include all metadata when exporting already.
    Please help. Thank you.

    When trying to create jpg or png files, there is no "Save as Copy" option, only "Export". I'm having the same issue with a script to output multiple formats. It will export jpg and png but the png file overwrites the jpg file because they don't have visible extensions.

  • Star rating export ?

    I have a problem with the star rating.
    When I apply stars in Lightroom, they don't show in Bridge or Photo Mechanic.
    I have changed prefs in B and PM to no avail.
    I have exported XMP to files from LR, and the first time it worked, but only a few files each time,now it don't.
    It worked ok in the beta.
    Any tricks out there ?
    -Søren

    There's a major difference in what "Export" means, When you're talking JPEGs from RAW, the files are exported out of LR into a new format, and you'd expect ratings to not follow.
    <br />
    <br />When you Export metadata to RAW or DNG files and them view them in Bridge, you should see the ratings. What version are you using?

  • Why have all my previous "My Ratings" (stars) have been removed and Smart Albums(i.e. 5 star rating in past year) virtually destroyed in the update to the new Photos program?  Where are the "My Ratings" capabilities ?

    Upon updating to the new Photos program, all the previous "My Ratings" (1-5 stars) for photos have been removed. Why?  My "Smart Albums" using the "My Ratings", i.e. photos with a 5 star rating within the past year, have been virtually destroyed in the update.  The updates "modified" Smart
    Album deleted the "My Ratings" parameter, retained the Date parameter so now Smart Album includes every photo within the date range parameter.  Where are the "My Ratings" capabilities ?  It appears they have been removed.  If so, why ?

    Photos doesn't have true star ratings.
    However, when photos are migrated from iPhoto or Aperture to Photos, they will have keywords assigned, like "1 star" or "5 stars". You can create smart albums based on these keywords.
    You can also assign keyboard shortcuts so if you're in the keyword pane and type 1, it will assign the "1 star" keyword.

  • Half Star rating just in Library ?????????

    I just downloaded the AppleScript for Half Star rating and it works,
    BUT I can't make a smart playlist with half star ratings (for example as song with a 3 1/2* rating isn't shown in a smart playlist with 'greater than 3* and less than 4* rules).
    Also in the 'Get info' box of a song, a song with a 2 1/2* rating is shown with a 2* rating.
    So a half star rating is only shown and can be set up in the Library.
    Maybe there is a script to change this ??? Otherwise in my opinion, half star rating is quite useless.

    It's obviously an unactivated feature that Apple have yet to implement. I too have the script and was hoping that iTunes 6.04 would activate this but it hasn't. My guess is they need to get it working on the iPod firmware before they update it in iTunes. Here's hoping for an update soon...

  • Keep star-Rating of imported photos

    is it possible to recognize the star-Rating of imported photos (from Aperture). Rating and key-wording was done in Aperture. After export and import to iPhoto kewords still there, but rating is zero for all images.
    Rating is written in Exif-data and can be show in Apples Preview e.g. („star Rating: 3“)
    Is there a possibility to transfer the rating to iPhoto (iLife 09 - iPhoto 8.1.2)

    iPhoto doesn't read the rating field nor does it write to it. Send a feature request via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • Mediasource won't update ID3 tags!

    "Mediasource won't update ID3 tags!? Please help! I have been using Mediasource 5 over the years to painstakingly get my mp3 library organized just the way I want it. I know that the Media Source track info is not necessarily the same as what's stored in the ID3 tag of the files themselves. I am trying to update the ID3 tags so that the info matches what is in Media Source. The good news is, I can right click on my database in CMS and there is an option to "Update Track Properties". Within this window are two options: one to update the ID3 tags to match MediaSource, and another to update MediaSource to match the ID3 tags.
    So far so good, here's the problem. No matter which option you choose, it always does the latter of updating MediaSource to match the ID3 tags. ARGHH!! I've tried this over and over, trying both options, but no matter what I do, it's always copying in the wrong direction. That goodness I had backed up my database before doing it. I've tried both CMS 5.0.38 and the newer 5.20.23 but both have the same issue.
    So is there any way to get Mediasource to take it's data and copy it over the ID3 tag data? Anyone know of a patch or other software that read the CMS database file and do this?

    CD-TEXT only allows capable audio players (portable CD players, certain car stereo CD players, etc.) to scroll that information across its display as the track is playing.
    For other people's iTunes to be able to retrieve the track listing, it has to be first uploaded into Gracenote's database, once Gracenote processes the information.

  • Query: Star Rating Usage

    (Added:  I see it's been 18 months since I settled on the now "old" system.)
    There are seven ratings in the built-in star rating system: Rejected, Un-rated, and 1- to 5-star. Do you use all of them?  What specifically do they signify?
    I'm about to change my long-used rating system in my personal Library.  I had used 1- and 2-star to indicate "saves" and "best of" in a Stack of similar Images while I culled those stacked Images for the one to develop.  I stopped stacking similar Images (to avoid the confusion with Version Stacks, which I use continuously), and so have not used 1- and 2-star ratings for many months.  My ratings had been limited to 3-, 4-, and 5-star, which I used to rate Images per project (keep, good, best).  For Library-wide ratings, I used Keywords (mostly "Portfolio").
    Working to renew my portfolio(s) has caused me to rethink this.  I am now likely to bump down my ratings, and make 5-star = "Portfolio".  Like so:

    Keep
    There are often Images I keep but won't develop.  This let's me know I've decided to keep them, and that I shouldn't delete them. (Example: excellent composition, misplaced focus.)
    ★★
    Good for Project
    These have a potential use within the Project.  In essence: development potential.
    ★★★
    Superior in Project
    Develop these!  Will likely be used.
    ★★★★
    Portfolio Nominee
    These I want to consider adding to my Portfolio.  I actually keep several portfolios, distinct by genre, or sometimes type (Grayscale flowers, for instance).  This is a Library-wide rating.
    ★★★★★
    Portfolio Selection
    These won't be marked in the Projects, but rather in the Smart Albums that collect developed nominated Images.  This, too, is a Library-wide rating.
    Imported Images are unrated.  Then, on a per-Project basis, they get either rejected, or rated 1-, 2-, or 3-star.  Developed Images which are exceptional get bumped to 4-star status.  I have Smart Albums that collect all 4-star Images by genre.  From here I will upgrade Images to 5-star (= "in Portfolio").  Or from the 5-star Smart Album, I'll downgrade ones to 4-star when needed.
    Before I implement this system, I like to hear how you use the built-in star ratings.  Thanks in advance  .

    Kirby,
    I like your list and the categories you have chosen for the ratings i.e. the clear distinction of ratings within project and portifolio.
    My use of (final) ratings is similar, but I did not put in so precise words as you did. My ratings change over and over again, while I am working with the images.
    During the first few month, while I am still working solely on one project, all ratings are relative to the project.
    When first browsing the images the ratings are quick and intuitive:
    Reject (techically bad,delete immediately),
    1 - (techically bad, but keep, wait and see, if it is not the only picture of the bear, the lion, or a very special moment),
    2 - o.k., but boring,
    3 - o.k., and there is something I like, needs a lot of work
    4  - great picture, but there is a still better one, keep it for the screen saver for variety
    5 - wow - I like it the first time I see it, show it off in collections
    Usually the really good images start off with the rating 5 and are downgraded, when I see more pictures and have looked closely at details. This is the phase, when I use stacks of similar images. Redundant images in the categories 1, 2, or 3 will be deleted, many 5s will be downgraded to 4.  Continue, until all stacks of similar images only contain one image.
    When I start to use the new images in library wide projects and compare them to other images, I downgrade more 5s to 4s, start to use version stacks, and all other rating is done by using keywords: slideshow, weg gallery, book, screensaver, wallpaper
    Regards

  • Photos and star rating??

    After doing the software update and changing from  iPhoto to Photos I can't seem to figure out how to rate my photos.  The directions in "Help" say that I can go to View-Rating- etc. but I don't see that when I look at the drop down menu.  I have years worth of photos star rated and that's how I organize my smart albums.  Is there an easy way to still do this or have they removed the star rating system?
    Thank you
    Isabel Roberts

    I suggest you write in to https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html  with feedback that you really need this feature. I did as I have a ton of shots I have rated this way for years.

Two start are songs that are ok, but if I should ever need space I can delete them. Five stars are songs that I just love. Now, what do you suggest I use the three and four star ratings for?

  • IMovie Won't Let Me Export?

    Hello!
    My iMovie won't let me export in HD (1080p or 720p), which has proved to be very frustrating.
    It first starts exporting:
    but then after a few minutes, a message comes up:
    What do I do? I've spent ages on this video, and it's really irritating, for me to start it all over again! I've updated all of my software, checked the App store for updates for iMovie, but there's nothing! What do I do???? GAH!!
    Please help! Thanks in advance! Thank you!

    I have the same problem and then some. I movie won't share this particular project, but it also won't save any changes made to it or any other project. At least that's what it started doing, now when I go to even try to make any changes it wigs out and things get scrambled in the Project window and it plays video from another project.
    When I create a new project, the Share menu is available, but it won't save changes to that project either. And by that I mean I can put stuff in the project and do whatever, but as soon as I quit and relaunch the application, the project is empty. I did figure out that if I make changes in a new project and immediately share it to the media browser that it will save the changes, but then it messes up my other project even more somehow!
    Tried archive and install, deleting plists, reinstalling iMovie and iLife support stuff (twice), repairing permissions, and changing permissions in the project package. Any other ideas?

  • Unable to Use Star Rating With JPG

    I have been unable to use the star rating with a certain batch of jpgs. I am able to use the star rating with dng files, and other jpgs, but there is a batch that I got off of my friends computer that I am unable to use the star rating with. I have tried clicking on the stars, and also through the label tab, but nothing is working.  Its really annoying because rating the pics is part of my workflow and I want to get these picture done.
    I'm using CS5 on a Mac running 10.6.8

    but there is a batch that I got off of my friends computer that I am unable to use the star rating with.
    Still strange things going on in the digital world...
    Recently I had the same with jpeg from other (to me unknown) sources. I managed with opening in PS and again save as max quality (not ideal but it worked). Those were only a few files.
    You might first try a few files to open and close in PS, if no luck make a duplicate (select some files for testing and with right mouse click choose duplicate) try those first. If still out of luck try the open and save as option. If this is the only solution the you can create a temporarily  action for this in PS (don't change the filename when in save as but leave it untouched and choose a new folder for destination so you won't loose the originals). When in Bridge select the files for the action, choose tools/photoshop/batch and run the action, piece of cake.

  • 5-star rating system

    This is a good one: I want a 5-star rating system like YouTube etc so I have 5 radio buttons (not in a group) switched to the Star button style.
    I want to be able to check if the star.rawValue ==1 or 0 and if so turn on/off the remaining stars.
    So if no stars are selected and you pick the 4th star, 1,2 and 3 fill in. Likewise if you pick the 2nd star after the 4th, stars 3 and 4 will turn off.
    What is the best way to go about this? Also I want a variable set to however many stars are set so I can track the rating somone gave it.
    Here is my begining code which is far short of what it needs to be be:
    //Placed on a click of rbstar1
    //Checks if star2 is on and if so tuns all others off because if 2 is on then 3,4,5 might be
    if(rbstar2.star2.rawValue ==1)
    rbstar2.star2.rawValue =0
    rbstar3.star3.rawValue =0
    rbstar4.star4.rawValue =0
    rbstar5.star5.rawValue =0
    rbstar1.star1.rawValue =1
    else
    // If star 2 is not on then star 1 may not be so put it on
    rbstar1.star1.rawValue =1
    //this is my attempt at tracking a variable of which was selected
    TextField1.rawValue ="1"
    I was thinking i could use a combo of click and change events?

    I tested it, normally this one should work with javascript.
    Here you go:
    if(this.rawValue == 1)  //doesn't matter which star it is
    star0.rawValue = 0;
    star1.rawValue = 0;
    star2.rawValue = 0;
    star3.rawValue = 0;
    star4.rawValue = 0;
    this.rawValue = 1; //this one refers to the actual star
    This one will work for ALL stars and you won't mess up the mapping of the stars.
    If you do: if(starNumber.rawValue = 1) ...
    You won't be able to unclick it so there is NO difference to radiobuttons.
    The if sentence isn't even important then. you could simply state it as:
    star0.rawValue = 0;
    star1.rawValue = 0;
    star2.rawValue = 0;
    star3.rawValue = 0;
    star4.rawValue = 0;
    this.rawValue = 1;

  • LR 3.6 stopped showing/updating my export presets

    LR 3.6, Win 7 ultimate 64 bit. Yes, I am so afraid of all the talk I hear about LR 4 being slow (it DID slowed down from 2 to 3) that I still work in 3.6
    It is no longer showing/updating my export presets (see left column). Whether I add folders from the OS or from withing LR, they are not visible. If I select them in FOLDER CHOOSE (see right side of the screen shot), then it will export them properly to the right folder but I have no way to UPDATE FOLDER WITH CURRENT SETTINGS.
    Help, I am working on a project with deadline
    THanks you so much in advance

    Apparently the thread opener solved his problem since the discussion stopped here.
    I have a similar problem and I can't think of a solution.
    WIN 7 64 bit
    LR 3.6
    After setting up my system on a new C:/ Drive (SSD), I successfully restored LR and all Settings and continued working.
    Then I noticed that there was a strange problem with the export settings.
    I have a large number of export setting groups and settings and they have all been restored. All but their paths!
    No matter which setting I am selecting, it won't choose the export path I originally saved with the setting, but rather it will have remembered the path I used with the last export - in any of the saved export settings!
    If I change a setting and right click to "save with current settings", it will save any new settings but the path!!?
    It's not too critical but very annoying.
    Can anyone help?`
    Thank you!
