Starling netbook second generation wireless issues

I've got a starling netbook from system76, and I'm having trouble getting the wireless working.  It worked fine with the Ubuntu install that was on it initially.  Here is what lspci says:
$ lspci | grep -i net
05:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10)
09:00.5 Ethernet controller: JMicron Technology Corp. JMC260 PCI Express Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 02)
the device 8172 is not mentioned on the Wireless setup wiki page.  According to this page: http://www.linwik.com/wiki/using+the+re … buntu+9.10.  I should be able to use the driver for 8192, which the wiki page indicates is part of the kernel.  Either 8192 is the wrong driver for my card or its not getting loaded because iwconfig does not show the wireless card.
$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
Anyone know how to get the 8172 card working?  Thanks.

That sounds familiar...
I have a atheros card and I had the same problem when trying to use the ath5k driver. The card is active but doesn't work and I couldn't detect any network either.
1) The new driver is still not the correct one. I'm using the wext driver and it works fine ( I set it up according to the beginners manual in the wiki )
2) The driver is the good one but your card is corrupted because of the previous wrong driver. I had this with the ath5k driver. Lost my wifi on Arch and also on my W7 dual boot... In this case you need to unplug your laptop and take out the battery for ~10 min. to reset your bios.
3) both the above
I would go for resetting the bios, and reset your rc.conf to standard values ( only what's wifi related and especially those modules ). Then try to get your wifi working with wext by following the beginners guide. See if that works first. When you are sure that the new driver works with your card you can try to load it later. It's possible that you'll have to repeat this several times and try out some different things to see what's causing the problem. Because you'll have to shutdown and unplug al power this is sort of time consuming and frustrating but this is how I solved my wifi problems. Hope it helps for you.

  • Wireless Issues with Apple TV 2nd generation

I have a linksys wireless router using WPA2 wireless security.  I have 5 laptops, 2 printers, 3 iPhones, and 2 iTouch's connected to the wireless with no problem.  My apple TV (second generation) has wireless issues, it will sit and connect and disconnect then reconnect then disconnect back and forwarth over and over.  It is the only device on my network that has issues.
BTW,  I have an AppleTV 1st Generation that also has no issues.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes it is wireless and it is right next to my Playstation 3 that has netflix along with several internet games and is also wireless but has no problems.
    NEW INFO
Upon further inspection.  It appears that my wireless is connected and I am logged into my itunes account but I only see 3 main categories at the top (Internet, Compouters, Settings) instead of (Movies, Tv Shows, Music, Computers, Internet, and settings).
I have confirmed that my photo Stream from my phone is working and updated.  However, No YouTube access so no internet.  However, I know I am getting to apple because if I enter an incorrect password it tells me and also it stores the username/password.
Not sure what to do.  I thought it was the wireless and still might hardwire the connection if I can but this is strange.  I have setup many ATV2 and have and ATV1 with no issues.
    Thanks for your help!

ipod nano 7th generation having issues with the UI. Out of box everything worked great. Once I snyc the device and it finished, the UI becomes unuesable. You have to double tap every icon in order to open music, videos, etc.  I cannot swipe to the second page of icons,  black box appears around an icon and then switches to a different one anytime I swipe. A box even appears around the time and battery power. iPod & iTunes are both updated. What is the FIX on this issue?

I had this problem as well.  This is what I found by searching online.  I tried the fix on my nano 7th gen and it worked.  I hope this helps you.  Make sure to use two fingers for sliding and double-click the icons to get into settings.  Good luck.
It would seem that Voiceover has been enabled on your iPod Nano. The following article contains information regarding Voiceover, and how to disable it once it's been enabled.
iPod nano (6th generation and later): How to use VoiceOver
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4317
To turn off VoiceOver on iPod nano using VoiceOver gestures
From the Home Screen, swipe right or left with two fingers until you see or hear "Page 2 of 2" on iPod nano (7th generation) or "Settings" on iPod (6th generation).
If the icons have been rearranged, or if there are more than four Home screens, you may hear something different.
Slide one finger around the screen until you hear Settings.
    Double-tap to open Settings.
Slide your finger up or down the screen until you see or hear General, then double- tap.
Slide your finger up or down the screen until you see or hear Accessibility, then double-tap.
Slide your finger up or down the screen until you see or hear VoiceOver, then double-tap.
Double-tap when you hear "VoiceOver switch button on."
You'll hear "VoiceOver off" to confirm the setting. Now you can use standard gestures to control iPod nano.
Note: You can also turn off VoiceOver by resetting your iPod.

Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.  Don't want to repeat what you have already tried.

  • My Second Generation iPod Nano isn't recognized by my Toshiba Laptop

    Hello,
I have a problem and I was hoping someone on here would be able to help me.
A couple of weeks ago I have bought a new Second Generation silver coloured 2GB iPod Nano. I have tried to hook it up with my Toshiba Sattelite A100 PSAA9 laptop without having iTunes installed, but while having Quicktime installed. My laptop gave the message 'new hardware detected, iPod', but then started the wizard 'New hardware detected' and searched for a driver, which it couldn't find. I disconnected the iPod and installed iTunes and tried to connect again.. Same result.
I have tried hooking up the iPod with a different computer that has iTunes installed and it works perfectly on there. I have also tried hooking it up with another laptop without having iTunes installed and that laptop recognizes the iPod immediately and requests to download iTunes.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all Apple software multiple times, using a register cleaner to make sure all Apple software is indeed gone. Next to that I have tried all the suggestions on the Apple problem shooting pages, such as resetting my iPod or even putting it in storage mode, but it won't be recognised by my laptop. I have also tried the special tips for Toshiba users, but that wouldn't help either. I have no idea what to do any more. I could really use some help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sanne

    Hi MartyP680,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It appears that you're receiving a message that your iPod nano can't be identified properly, and you've already tried removing and reinstalling iTunes. You've also isolated this behavior to only one of your PCs.
If the issue persists, there are some additional tips in this article that may help, including verifying that the Apple Mobile Device Support service installed properly and is running:
iPod nano: Error message saying that iPod could not be identified properly - Apple Support
The "Learn More" section also mentions some other potentially conflicting software to look for on your PC.

    Hello joejoehoppy,
Look for it to pop up next to the iTunes Store icon. Also check out the article below to troubleshoot your iPod nano connecting to iTunes.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off"

  • I have a second generation airport express and i cant manage to extend my wifi

I have a second generation airport express and i cant manage to extend my wifi

So im going to need another airport express to extend my wifi wireless
    That is correct.
One AirPort will connect to your router with a short Ethernet cable and be configured to "create" a wireless network.
The second AirPort will be configured to "extend" a wireless network.

  • Is this a dropping connection or a wireless issue....

    Hi all,
We've been having some problems with our Infinity setup for a few months now and it's getting a bit annoying, I could use some help in fixing it
So, every evening (could be daytime too, we dont use it then really) our connection seems to drop every 10 mins or so. If I'm gaming, it will drop me out of a game and I'll have to reconnect. I can usually reconnect in seconds. If we're watching Netfilx, it will stop, and restart a few minutes later...
Oddly, the blue Hub lights (HH3 I believe) never falter, solid blue throughout.
Restarting the router (and white box thingy) works pretty much everytime - and only occasionally are we disconnected for more than a few minutes.
The setup is Infinity 2 I think, into the master socket. I'm running a handful of Apple devices, a home server, a Mac and a PS3. Probably important that none of these devices have changed at all location, spec or otherwise.
Occasionally my server cannot be found on the network either, despite it running continuously - a restart usually cures this but would it point to a dodgy router? (it's a wired connection,so no wireless issue)
I'm guessing I need to run some tests but not sure what?
I did try and call BT Support a while ago, but the chap said he couldn't help me because my Mac Air has no ethernet cable, just wireless

seems to me like a faulty router or modem mate, to make sure its not actually dropping fully you will want to login to the router page using 192.168.1.254 then going to troubleshooting and then helpdesk and it will tell you the uptime. login with the password which should be on the back of your router. do this when the wireless next drops. btw dont keep resetting the white modem, it will cause your speeds to drop as it will think its a line fault, just reset the homehub. if the uptime is less then 2 mins then its dropping fully, if its more than than lets say 1 hour for example (and you reset it one hour ago before the wireless dropped) then its most likely just the router being faulty.

  • Since installing Mountain Lion OSX my Apple TV second generation cannot access the library on my iMac - any suggestions?

I recently installed Montain Lion on my 2009 iMac.  Now when I try to access my iTunes library through my second generation Apple TV I receive the following message: "Could not connect to ...Library".
I have done the following to resolve the problem with no improvement:
    (1) verified that my software is up to date on both the Apple TV and iMac (iTunes).
    (2) Verified that home sharing for my entire iTunes Library is turned on in my iTunes preferences.
    (3) Verified that the network is working - I only have one network, the signal strength shown on the Apple TV is 5 bars, and the Apple TV an access other internet programming (Vimeo, YourTube, etc.).
    (4) Restarted both my Apple TV and my iMac.
Prior to my Mountain Lion upgrade the Apple TV worked fine and communicated with my iMac without a problem.  I'm out of ideas and would appreciate any suggestions from the community.  Thanks

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I am having a similar issue on my iMac 27" (2011).
Once the computer goes to sleep, Apple TV is unable to wake it up (I do have the "Wake for network access" Energy Saver option turned on).
I have to specifically login and "wake up" the computer before my Apple TV can see it.
Overall, I find Mount Lion to be much more stable and smoother compared to Lion - but this issue is very annoying

  • Airport express second generation do not connect to the internet

Airport express second generation do not connect to the internet. I changed my location and the problem happened . Earlier it was running smoothly. I am not finding the cause of the problem. I switched on and off several times but the problem persists. Please help me.

Are you asking the make/model of the computer or the AX base station?
Neither, I was interested in the make/model of the cable modem.
Our ethernet connection was fried in an electrical storm so we had to go wireless.
Electrical storms are never a good thing when it comes to electronics. What was/is your current network configuration? Is it something like the following?
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > AX > (wireless) > wireless devices
Is there another router, other than the AX, in the configuration? ... or an Ethernet switch? I'm just trying to understand your network to best advise you on how to configure the AX.

  • Wireless Issue

Hi, I'm having what is turning out to be a common issue for iPod Touch users after the 3.1.1 update. I have a 1G 32gb iPod Touch that is no longer able to sustain connections to any wireless network since I updated to 3.1.1. I didn't want to post earlier (because I wanted to try all the solutions I have seen posted here and elsewhere first) but I'm hoping the intelligensia here can help me with this problem.
Wireless issue: When I try to log on to any network with my touch, it will either not connect automatically at all (although it can certainly see the network - the SSID is broadcast at least in my home), or it will automatically appear to be connected, but no data can be downloaded from the network - there is only the "cannot download from server" message (in Mail) and a neverending "connecting..." circle (in Safari and most other apps).
I have my router running a mixed network, with WPA encryption, with the latest firmware and still nothing but the impression that the touch has detected the network but can't log on. Sometimes there seems to be a short period where it is able to download something (i.e. I will get an email in my inbox that consists of a title only, with the message "content not downloaded from server") but this is fleeting (less than 5-10 seconds at a time).
I have cycled, restarted, restored and upgraded the firmware on my router (both with and without security) and nothing seems to have helped on this end, and other computers, both Mac and PC, are able to log on to this network.
I have renewed the lease of the network, reset the network settings, disabled-enabled the WiFi, restored the iPod and performed every trick on the touch that I can think of or read about here. Nothing helps. I am not having the problem in terms of sensing reduced sensitivity to networks that some people here are mentioning, but I am not able to log on to any network I've tried (so far, 3 private, 5 commercial).
I don't want to assume its some kind of technical problem with update 3.1.1, but that's the only thing I can think of, with all of the similar complaints posted around the net and the fact that this wasn't an issue a few weeks ago.
Does anyone wiser than I am have any useful suggestions?

Scott Campbell sounds like they 'said':
    > JFYI: Fresnel zone != LoS

So my response to Scott's comment is...
Thinking it was STP enabled on the APs.....<smacks forehead>
Will know for sure Monday morning.

  • Latest 10.4.10 Upgrade on 7/2/2007 - did it fix the wireless issues?

I am one of the people that had to go back to 10.4.9 because of all the wireless problems that the June release of 10.4.10 introduced. I just noticed that there is an updated version of the upgrade released on July 2. Has anybody installed that one, and did the wireless issues go away (in case you had them with the previous release)?
I am just wondering if it's worth doing at this point. Last time I had to reinstall the OS starting with 10.4.6, and it was a pain. Has anyone been more courageous than me and bit the bullet?
    Thanks in advance.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yes, this update seemed to work for me. It is not terribly clear there are actualy two 10.4.10 updates. There is the full update, which is 279 megabytes, that gets picked up automatically by the Apple Software Update utility.
There is a second 10.4.10 update which is actually 10.4.10 v1.1. This DOES NOT get discovered automatically by the update utility. You have to manually go get the update. The v1.1 update is about 72 megabytes before unpacking.
You can find it at the following Apple support URL:

Does this article apply to OS X Lion and Airport Utility 6.0?
Reason: Airport Utility cannot find my Airport Extreme (4th generation) wirelessly on my Time Capsule configured network even although the firmware in both units is up to date.

I thought you were trying to Extend the network with an Express as the article mentions you pointed to...
You can't find the Airport Extreme then...
I woudl suggest doing a Factory reset....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
Then you should be able to set it up just as you did when it was new....
Factory default reset (using reset button)
If the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule isn't accessible from AirPort Utility, the Factory Default reset can be accomplished by using the reset button.
Unplug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule from power.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil, then plug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule back in while continuing to hold the button until you see the light (LED) flash rapidly. This should happen after a few seconds.
Release the button. This will factory default reset the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.

  • Second generation ipod touch and problems with headphone jack.

    Hello!
I have a second generation ipod touch that is experiencing headphone jack problems.  Everytime that I plug any sort of headphones in all it does is make weird noises and only let me hear background parts of the music.  I have even tried replacing the headphones that i was using and it still does the same thing.  The only way to hear all of the song is to push the headphones to the left and hold it there otherwise nothing works.  I even talked to some of my friends that have the 2nd generation ipod touch and they have the same problem.  Is there an issue with the 2nd generation ipod that people are not informed about?

    No.
My 2G, passed along to my brother now, is just fine after nearly 3 years of daily use and it's share of hard knocks.
    I didn't just "get lucky" either .
A search of this forum will show that what you've described does happen but it's not common.
You need a 3rd party , like iPod Doctor, to tell you and your friends what happened and how to avoid it in the future.
I doubt it will make sense to repair a 2G iPod since it can no longer be updated but ask anyway.
