StarOffice 8
Anyone have any idea if/when we might see StarOffice 8 integrated into JDS and the Solaris 10 downloads?
StarOffice 8 is planned to be in a future Solaris Express (Nevada) build.

How to install Thunderbird and Lightning Extension to StarOffice 9
I just purchased StarOffice 9, read the entire documentation, including the "Getting Started" PDF file. Looked all over Sun.com and nowhere can I find how to install the Thunderbird and Lightning extensions touted as being available for StarOffice 9. Thanks for any help.
LarryMcJHi Larry,
Thunderbird and the extension Lightning are two independant parts, and with StarOffice 9 deluxe available.
If u have StarOffice 9 u should download -free- the email and calendar client from
the Mozilla Thunderbird page and Mozilla Lightning page
after downloaded Lightning 0.9 !!
open thunderbird -->options --> addons chose the file downloaded, click ok, and install
Now u can manage tasks and so on in your thunderbird, but independant of StarOffice apps !!

Staroffice 9 to SO9 Update 1 process fails
I downloaded the StarOffice9 Update 1 patch from sunsolve and followed the directions. I'm on Windows XP SP3. The update to SO9 fails every time with an error message in German. (I have a screen shot but am unsure if I can upload it here?) What I think it is saying is that it is looking for a file called "staroffice9.msi" in order to verify my installation (or something like that). There is no staroffice9.msi file on my computer. Maybe it was created when I installed SO9, but I delete installer files once the installation is complete. The patch update will not complete in any case, so I am stuck. Any suggestions?
I followed your advice and ran the original SO installer, which created the installation files on my desktop. I then canceled the rest of the installation and ran the patch update program. It worked fine, and now my system is patched to SO9 update 1. Thanks much for the helpful reply.
I must say, requiring an original .msi installer file in order to validate an update is really dumb. The installer unpacks almost 1/2 GB of files on the user's desktop. Why in the world would I want to keep those files around after my installation is done? Of course I erased them to get them off my desktop and off my disk. Then, 6 months later, I run a patch program which won't run if it can't find the original msi file. That's really not a good idea. If the updater needs to validate something, it should look for the staroffice exe file, which would make perfect sense. Looking for an msi file makes no sense for the reasons I've mentioned plus the fact that it doesn't even prove the program is installed on the system. This should be fixed! -
StarOffice 8 - finding all different font types in a Writer file
Hello,
I am currently using StarOffice 8 on a Windows XP system.
I frequently transfer a large Writer (.odt) file between different computer systems as I constantly update the file with new information. As part of the updates, I use different fonts. As I install a particular font on one machine, this font may not be installed on another machine when I add new information to the file on that particular machine.
When I open the Writer file on a machine that has some font not installed, the WYSIWYG appears incorrectly (since the proper font is not installed on that computer, of course) but if you highlight the incorrectly-displayed info, it says what the font type should be (ie, "WP Hebrew David" font). I then go online to download that specific font type for this the computer. Then the data is displayed correctly.
When you have many, many different font types used in a file, it is hard to keep track of all different fonts used. Before anyone questions me on using so many different fonts in a file, it is important for my file to visually display the correct data, and this means using a quantity of fonts.
What I am wondering is the following:
Is there a way from within StarOffice 8 to scan a particular file and then let the user know every different font name used in that file?
That way, if the file contains a font which was used on another machine but not currently installed on the current machine -- when I am updating information in the file -- I can then see a list of fonts used and then install new fonts accordingly after checking to see if they are installed (by checking the Fonts folder in C:/Windows)
I hope this makes sense, or is it "clear as mud"?
Please excuse my bad English grammar as I am not a native English speaker, but have picked it up living in Canada for the last 20 years :-)
Cheers & thanks in advance for any help !
David

There is a Fonts Used macro writer_printAllFonts.sxw Further checking this is the wrong StarBasic macro. The one I use came from an OOo forum I think. I use it with SO7, SO8 and SO9.
It is at the end of this message. To install it:
[1] Copy the macro below to the clipboard
[2] Go to Tools>Macros>Organize Macros>Basic>Standard
Select New. Highlight what is there, paste, and close.
[3] Go to Tools>Customize>Menus>Tools
Highlight Word Count, then go to Add>Macros>My Macros>Standard>Module1
Highlight FontsUsed, Click Add, Close, Ok

Hi,
I would like to add Greek support for spelling in staroffice 8 and although i followed the instructions i found i can't.To be more specific ...
I found the following info, how to add dictionaries
Please make sure that StarOffice is not running (including the quickstarter) when installing the modules. In order to provide the additional StarOffice language modules, you will have to copy all files from the subdirectory of the desired language (e.g., ".../addon/dict/polish") from the StarOffice CD ROM into the ".../share/dict/" directory of the StarOffice Installation.
After copying the files for the appropriate language module, load StarOffice and open the menu "Tools - Options - Language Settings - Writing Aids". Under the "Available Writing Aids" category, click the field in front of the "StarOffice (Default)" entry to remove the check mark. Next, re-click this field so that the check mark reappears. This action prompts StarOffice to create a new list of available language modules within the program.
To check which language modules are active, choose [Edit]. The "Edit Modules" dialog will now appear. In this dialog, you will be able to view all active language modules under "Language". Click [Close] to close the "Edit Modules" dialog. Close the "Options" dialog with [OK].
The newly installed language module(s) will be automatically available for the Spellcheck function after completing these steps.
but when i reclick the checkbox near to StarOffice so the mark reappears nothing happens,so i can't build a new language module.
Does any one know how to do it ?
P.S.
I have copied the greek files from addon/greek to share/disc from staroffice 6 because icould not find the greek support dictionaries for staroffice 8
thank youHi Phil,
Thanks for replying.
I have installed SO8 and updated it with update 3 rev 2 in /usr/local/src/StarOffice8.0
I have downloaded the macro and opened it with SO8.The macro run OK, it downloaded el_GR.zip and hyph_el_GR.zip in /usr/local/src/StarOffice8.0/share/dict/ooo and extracted and make the following files in the same directory.
dictionary.lst
dictionary.lst.1st
dictionary.lst.old
el_GR.aff
el_GR.dic
el_GR.zip
hyph_el_GR.dic
hyph_el_GR.zip
README_el_GR.txt
README_hyph_el_GR.txt
After that i closed SO8 and reopened it.Then i went to TOOLS->OPTIONS->LANGUAGE SETTINGS->WRITING AIDS
there is a section AVAILABLE LANGUAGE MODULES,under it it has the only checkbox that it is checked and it says StarOffice,at the right side i click Edit... and i expect to find the Greek Language but i can not. Also when i click the checkbox StarOffice so the check disappears and then recheck it so it http://www.visionwebhosting.net appears, nothing happens (acording to the info i found, this action prompts StarOffice to create a new list of available language modules within the program)
When you said that SO8 can use MySpell dictionaries,is there something else i have to do ? Maybe i did not understand something well ?
thanks again

Conversion from SXW to DOC without StarOffice
I have a situation in which I have a number of text and tabular files with the SXW extension but I need to convert them into MSOffice analogs. My problem is I cannot install StarOffice on this machine and no longer have access to a StarOffice machine. Any hope?>
There is a (slight) possibility of installing StarOffice between backups but only if I get a very thorough uninstall process, completely cleaning out the registry and other non-obvious or hidden files.
Can do?What did you use to convert - ExportPDF? Can you post a screenshot of how your converted document looks; see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1070933

StarOffice 8 upd. 8 PDF-export problem
Hello!
After updating my StarOffice 8 installation to Product Update 8 I am no more able to export my documents to PDF. The German error Message is:
Fehler beim Speichern des Dokumentes documentation:
Schreibproblem.
Die Datei konnte nicht geschrieben werden.
in English (after switching locale):
Error saving the document documentation:
Write Error.
The file could not be written.
Before updating I think it worked. Next step I will try is to do a clean reinstall of StarOffice as well as test under Linux.
Windows Vista 64-Bit
StarOffice 8 (Product Update 8)
Java 1.6.03 (x86 as well as x64)
Does anyone have a solution for this?
Thanks in advance.
Regards, xasx.Okay - a clean reinstall solved the problem for now.

Staroffice 8 Zoom Shortcut keys not working
(Solaris 10, Staroffice 8 U3 rev 2, Sunray)
The shortcut keys for zoom in Drawing and Presents used to be the "+", "-", "/" and "*" keys (with num lock ON).
The issue:
The + and - keys still zoom in and out, but the / and * keys no longer zoom anything
What I am expecting:
The "/" should zoom to the "selection" and the * key should zoom to the page
Notes:
- the "zoom" button is enabled in a toolbar, and it changes to the appropriate "icon" when I hit the / and * keys, but nothing happens to the view
- I have tried this with different keyboards.
- I have tried this on openoffice on a mac, with similar results
Could this be a bug, or is it something i'm missing?
Cheers,
- jdAlso the toolbar icons are not working as expected.
When I'm pressing zoom-in or zoom-out the position of the worksheet is shifting to another coordinate.
Zooming in to a specific point is not possible, so I have to zoom-in first and then reposition the worksheet next.
Zooming out also ends up with an extra repositioning of the worksheet.
DM is 3.1.1.703, OS is windows 7.
Any feedback if this is reproduceable on other installations.

StarOffice for work management
I just started to use StarOfficeDrawing7.0 to make a schedule. My effort failed and I abandoned the effort because I could not establish the drawing size, reading the book, using the help or surfing the commands atop the drawing screen.
So here is my idea for StarOffice to leapfrog Microsoft Project. Project Management software is based upon projects. There is more on people's to do list than project tasks.
Project Managers would like resources to only consider the project tasks, and they don't want to undermine the 'Critical Path Method' (CPM)architecture. CPM breaks down in the engineering/design phase of projects, where the resources have other things to do and manage besides projects.
The method to manage engineering/design resources is basically to list the things to do, priortize them, estimate the duration of each thing to do and calculate when it will be done. Combining 'Outlook', Database and a drawing tool (with an interface to Project Management tools is what is needed.
Furthermore I analyze there is up to a 7 to 1 savings in paper by formating schedules, project and non-project, with the ability to display more than one activity per line. It is the format used for hundreds of years of scheduling before CPM, otherwise known in the PM industry as Arrow Diagraming Method or 'activity on arrow'. More details can be seen on www.commitmentscheduling.com that has a pdf and 16page white paper.
I know it works. I was the architect of such an application, used to schedule 350 engineers for 3 years.Hi Anish,

Opening several documents only in ONE windos of StarOffice
How can I make StarOffice to open ONLY one window in the task bar when opening several documents? Thanks
It would help to know how you are scanning and the hardware used. There are just too many possibilities to answer your question as stated (if we even know the answer).

Setup and install failure of Staroffice 8 on sparc Solaris 10
Hello,
I downloaded Staroffice 8 for sparc Solaris and I tried to install it using:
#cd /var/tmp/unpack_staroffice
# ./setup
Running installer
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: install

I've seen many threads on this error. I found no solution except to install with pkgadd command.
pkgadd solution works but the default location is /opt. I don't know how to install in another location.
the pkgadd -R root-path don't permit to install where I want:
pkgadd -R /usr/local -d ./ don't work because /usr/local is added at the
default path (/opt, /usr etc..): /usr/local/opt /.., /usr/local/usr.. and son on.
To bypass this I tried to create symbolic link:
ln -s /opt/staroffice8 /usr/local/staroffice8
and install packages at the default place:
pkgadd -d ./
installattion works fine but when I start staroffice8 I obtain error:
# soffice
The application cannot be started.
The component manager is not available
Any help is appreciated.

greetings,
Stoyanhello all,
finally found the solution for this problem. thanks to Willi Burmeister who posted a simiral question and a summary to the sunmanagers mailing list:
this was triggered by bug 6404527. It's a missing blank in the pkginfo file of nearly all
staroffice packages.
here is a quick workaround:
# cd /var/sadm/pkg
# grep -l ": R" */pkginfo | xargs perl -pi'.bak' -e 's/: R/: R/'i am happily running U9 now :P

Vista introduced a new format for addresses/contacts. Is there any way to import this new format into StarOffice 7?
Any help greatly appreciated! It may seem to work fine, but you will likely have problems along the way. The activation issue may be that you did not deactivate it from the previous systems before you installed VISTA. If that is the case, you may be out of install rights. If you still have the older systems, deactivate Acrobat there.
As mentioned, you may still not have luck with AA7 on VISTA. Acrobat may open fine, but most likely you will have to use the print to file feature when printing to the Adobe PDF printer (if it even installs - in that case use a PS printer and possibly rename it to Adobe PDF). You would then have to open the file in Distiller to get a PDF. To automate the process a bit in such a case, you can set the printer port to file, rather than PDF Port. If it works without such changes, you are lucky. Even with the changes it may not work correctly. Good luck. -
StarOffice 8 (Product 6) Update to Product 7 Error
Hi,
I tried to update as prompted by auto-update feature. But after I have finished downloading and saved the file 120187-10 (Signed Patch). But when I opened the file, a Java virtual machine launcher window pop up and with message stated Invalid or corrupt jarfile.
I have downloaded the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 update 1 and tried the 2nd time but failed also, with the same error message.
Can anyone pls help what could be the cause having this update error?

The StarOffice team has provided the following feedback regarding your
inquiry:
Each patch is provided as common .zip file
(http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/pdownload.pl?target=120187-10&method=h)
and as signed .jar file
(http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/pdownload.pl?target=120187-10&method=hs
The signed link is just below the common link on the StarOffice Patch
site on SunSolve.
Having signed .jar files is a default behavior of SunSolve, each patch
we submit is automatically places as common and as signed one. Customers
can read more details when the click on the "Help" link on the right on
SunSolve. On the following page item 8. lists the link
http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-9-81418-1#SignedPa
tches.
From there customers can read the following:
(A8) Signed and unsigned patches are simply two different packaging
formats of the same patch. Signed patches are in a jar file format and
unsigned patches are in a zip file format. The contents of the files
are identical except that the jar file format also includes signature
files. Signed patch files can be verified with the Java jarsigner
command as follows:
jarsigner -verify <patch number>.jar
The command jar -x would extract a .jar file. -
