Starring images in survey

Hi Everyone - not sure if this has been covered but the search field here doesn't work (put in white balance, and nothing comes up!) so apologies if it has!
Anyway: i select a few images, goto survey or lupe, and then click '[' to increase the star rating by one,  of just one of the images, and they all go up by 1 ... is there a way without using the mouse that i can star just the image that is selected (as you used to be able to do)?
Cheers,
Slater

sorry - i meant ']'

  • Can't move images in Survey mode

I click on a folder and pull up a few images in Survey and am not able to move/re-arrange said images, on other folders it works as it should -- Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't -- yes, I click on the image itself. Is this a bug?

Did you ever figure this out?
I have the same issue... can't figure out why...

  • How do I add an image in Survey Builder?

I am trying to build a survey in Survey Builder where images are part of the questions and/or the answers.  Any idea how I could do this?  I am an APEX novice.
    Thanks,
    Sara

Survey Builder does not have support for images in questions or answers. You cannot put markup in question or answer text.
You can, however, put markup in section introduction messages. So if a section that introduces a group of questions has an image in it then the questions can refer to the image. Survey Builder will not manage the images for you so they should already be accessible by some URL that the survey questionnaire has access to (meaning if the survey is public the images should not be behind a firewall or require authentication to access).
Create a section for each image you want to ask questions about. In the introduction message add an image tag. For example a section introduction message could be:
The next few questions relate to the following image:<br>
         <img src="http://example.com/images/icon00012.png">
Then add questions to each section about the image.

  • Reordering images in Survey mode

What are the restrictions on rearraging images in Survey mode? I could not figure out why it would sometines work and sometimes doesn't.
For example, I have a main top directory 2012 and in it a folder for each month. If I am in GRID view at the 2012 level and choose images in Survey mode, I cannot rearrange them. But I am in GRID view in one of the subfolders, then I can.
Is this normal? Am I doing anything wrong?

Provided you are working with a Folder of images or a Collection (but not a Smart Collection, All Photographs or Previous Import), you can reorder images in Survey View. To do this, drag and drop an image into the position you want it to appear in the group.

  • How do I subtract a background form star images?

I am taking night sky star images through a telescope with Canon Rebel.
If I invert the image I see a gray background that is the light pollution here in Chicago.
How do I select this background and subtract it from the image to get rid of the light pollution &
leave just the stars on a white background?
If I do that to several images, how do I then add them?

I had to convert your GIF file to JPG before it would open in Elements.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=14OEMmCPymKUzAVYQl4EwfKrHQ0j1
    Open picture file
Duplicate background layer, work on background copy layer
Shut off visibility of background layer by clicking on its eye icon in layers palette
Access magic wand tool. I used tolerance=32, but experiment with other values.Leave contiguous and use all layers unckecked.
Left click, hit delete on keyboard.
Go to Select>deselect. May have to use magic wand  again in other stray areas
Open blank, new layer, and place between background and background copy layers
Make blank layer active, go to Edit>fill layer>white

  • New problem rating image in Survey View when multiple selected - help!

When we are in Survey View, normally we can have multiple images selected and when we use any star rating it rates only one image (the best), but midway through an editing session it just started rating all images selected at once.  I know that this is the standard way that ratings operate in Library (Grid View), but never before has Survey View (N) done this. We rebooted and optimized the catalog, but nothing has helped.  Please let me know if you have any fixed or thoughts as to what the problem would be.

    You are welcome Kevin.
Another thing I find helpful when rating or labeling, is to engage the Caps Lock.  When a rating or label is applied by hitting a number, LR automatically advances to the next image in the filmstrip.  This works in all modules.

  • Is there a way to import only starred images from camera?

Now that the Canon 7d can be starred in camera, sometimes for the sake of speed, I would only like to import those.  Any way to do this without manually looking through them and individually selecting them?
Or is there another program where it is available?  I read up on Lightroom, but it seems it is not possible there.
    Thank you.

Or is there another program where it is available?
Bridge PhotoDownloader does not recognize the stars, nor can you filter them. I tried for experiment to rate a file on my 1Dx but to be honest it was quite an effort in finding the right menu and much action needed.
Also tried (again experimental) to use Canon Image browser and Canon Digital Photo Professional using a card reader.
Let's put it mildly, Canon is very good in manufacturing camera's but I really believe they should outsource the software department. It is again clear to me why I don't use their software, its just very unproductive and dead slow
A workaround could be that you forget about rating in camera, load the files in Photodownloader and use the advance option to provide thumbnails. Wait a little for them to build, use the button uncheck all and the browse through the thumbs and select the ones you think you need fast, then hit 'Get Media' (but don't forget to import the rest of the files when you have a bit more time left)

  • How to create an image-based survey?

I would like to create a form in which some questions are a series of image choices, i.e. select photo one, photo two or photo three. I can add images easily enough, but to actually use an images as responses in a questionnaire seems to be entirely different. I'm a complete novice, so any advice would be appreciated.

There are a number of ways you could do this. Probably the easiest is to include a check box next to each so the user can select one. Just give each check box in the group the same name and different export value, and the user will be able to select at most one from the group, or none.
An alternative is to use buttons to contain the images, and when one is selected, it's border color or background color could change to indicate which is selected. This will require a bit of JavaScript, bit it's not too complicated. If this sounds like something you'd like to pursue and need some help, post again.

  • Can I import edited photos (and their raw originals) from Aperture in groups, like 5-star images from a project?

I have 30,000 images in Aperture and it keeps crashing. I've run out of memory on my MacBook Pro running 10.8.6 and I want to switch over to Lightroom for all new photos and slowly migrate my best ones over to LR as well. I've edited many of my best shots already, probably 6000 or more, so I need to feel confident that cropping, editing, rating, and metadata will all migrate successfully.
Also, can I load the Lightroom itself onto an external hard drive and keep all my images off my laptop? If I edit them, do the edits remain on my laptop regardless of where the originals reside. I think that's the issue that I'm running into with Aperture:  edits stay on my laptop even though originals are on an external HD.
Thanks for your feedback on both of these matters.

Your photos can be on any hard disk, internal or external or network. If they are stored on an external hard disk, then when you import them into Lightroom, you select the ADD option and the photo will remain on your external hard disk. The edits are stored in your Lightroom catalog (as opposed to "remain on my laptop"). Once you import photos into Lightroom, you no longer want to manage them (move, copy, delete) using your operating system. You do all photo management in Lightroom.
If you transfer the photos properly, your edits, cropping, metadata, etc. will transfer to Lightroom, but I will leave the details to some expert on Aperture.
If I could offer some advice, I don't think you want to just transfer SOME of your photos to Lightroom. In my opinion, you want ALL of your photos managed by Lightroom, and not some in application 1 and some in application 2. This makes your life much easier when trying to find your photos, you don't have to think "Is this photo in Lightroom or is this in Aperture?"  (Note: this doesn't mean you have to import all the photos from Aperture into Lightroom in one HUGE operation; you can certainly do the importing in manageable sized groups)

  • Is there a way to burn images in a specific project with a certain star rating directly to a disc?

I want to burn all the one-starred images in a project to a disc, and was wondering if there is a way to do it directly from Aperture, instead of having to export them to a file, and then burn them to the disc.  Also, when I do this, shots from multiple cameras with different images series numbers get out of order.  I want them to be cronological, as they are in Aperture.

Sorry, no, you cannot burn directly from Aperture without exporting.
However, you can define an Automator workflow, so that you do it more easily from within Aperture:
Open Automator and create a service to receive "no input" in Aperture
Drag an "Find Image Versions in Aperture" Action into the Workflow, set to Rating is equal "1"
    Add an "Export Versions" Action
Add an Burn on DIsk Action.
Install the Service in your Library in the "Services" folder
Then you will be able to activate the Service from the Aperture -> Services menu.
To order CD chronologically, export with an export name format "Image Date -Time".

  • Survey view organization problem, cannot organize images in order I want without images shifting randomly

I want to be able to organize my images in survey view in lightroom 2 in the order I want them to be.  this way I can export them in the order the portfolio reviewer will see them in. when I have 20 images in survey view and I try to rearrange them, they scatter about on their own? help

Survey mode is not designed for rearranging photos into a User-specified order.  You will need to use the Grid View [G] for this.

  • Add photos to a specific Collection from Survey view?

When I'm doing my edit from a shoot, I often use the Survey view to look at groups of images. Also, I use collections as a way to store selections into future use categories like Contests 2010, Portfolio, etc. In Survey, it seems only possible to add photos to a Quick Collection or view it in an existing collection, but I want to be able to add it to other collections either via drag & drop or by contextual menu. Is this possible to do this and if not, is this something other users find useful enough to add as a feature request?

I think the drag and drop would be difficult to implement as all the images in Survey View have to be targeted.
However, if one had the ability to set more than one target collection rather than a single collection or the Quick Collection I think that could be useful for organizing while in Survey View. Just as we can change the meaning of the color labels we could be able to select say, five different collections and assign a target shortcut to them. So whie in survey view (or any view for that matter) I could hit 22 and the image)s) would be added to any collection I deemed to have a target of 22. Add the shift key so as not to confuse with Ratings.
Currently I cannot suggest a simpler way for you since you state that you are in Survey View. A feature request? Sure go ahead and make one.

  • Photos disappear in library after giving some 1 star rating, LR 2.1

I imported 3 folders of Nikon NEF images with corresponding xmp files, which were previously created in Bridge CS3. NEF files are from last year, from Nikon D200. All 9786 seemed to appear in Library. I then went to Loupe view, and rated some 300 or so out of 350+ selected images with one star.
I then set Library to filter only 1 star images, then went to web module to make a web gallery. After a few minutes of changing data fields, I realized LR seemed to be creating way too many pages. I went back to Library, only now when I filter for 1 star, it shows only one of the images I selected, and 387 other ones I did not rate.
I then removed filter, and see most of the images, but not all 9786- it says 9475 of 9786 photos (in all photos catalog). I checked in the original folders- the files are all there, numbered correctly, and the library shows the correct number of files, but it just won't show the "missing"files.
I go to last import catalog- again it says 9786 files, but Library says 9475 of 9786.
I am at a loss- do I need to remove all 9786 from catalog, re-import all of them, and go back & re-rate thos 300 or so images all over again! And if I do it, what's to say I won't have the same problem.
    Lightroom 2.1, G5 quad, OS 10.4.11, 8.5 GB ram...
    Thanks,
    R

Okay, here's a weird twist. I was playing around with LR, and checked the folder (under Folders) that the images are in- again, it only showed 3026 out of 3337, so there were the same 311 missing as before
But then, just for the hell of it, I made a smart collection of 1 star images, and low & behold, 464 images showed up, including the missing ones. I then chose only the ones from the session I wanted, and made a quick collection- quick before they disappear I guess.
So now I have all 312 missing images in one place (only)- well, 311 were missing, but one of the one star images was not missing.
Ah... I think I have it- the non-missing image had an icon on it that read 312- I clicked on it & all of a sudden, 3ll the missing images showed up. Somehow I must of stacked them together, and that is why they disappeared. Still, when I did search by name you would think I could find any of them, but I guess that is a LR 2 bug of some sort.
So, I guess that is that. Now, to research my next 10 LR 2 questions.....
    Thanks again,
    R

  • When developing an image from a smart collection "has no adjustments" it gets immediately deselected

I am wondering if this could really be the intended LR behaviour?
I start from a smart collection, one of the criteria is "has no adjustments".
Ok, as soon as I move the first slider in develop module, it no longer matches that criterion.
But that should be no reason for LR to force me to immediately stop the develop edits on the selected image.
It immediately unselects, and I stay in Develop module with a grey window and the message "no image selected". (It does not move on to the next image, which still matches the criterion.)
I would expect that when I return to Library module, it would return to the same smart collection where I started, but I would not find my last developed images there, as they no longer match the criterion.
But that LR grabs it immediately out of my develop selection?
Strange enough it stays the same, when I first explicitely selected all images while in Library/smart collection.
My expectation would be that I  have this selection fixed to work on in Develop module. Similar to when I select any images from survey view and go to Develop module.
But no, the only workaround I found is:
Start from the smart collection, ctrl a to select all, then arbitrarily click on another collection withput this criterion - selection stays fixed - then move over to Develop module.
    This is LR4.1 on Win7.
Definitely my functional specification would be: never take off an image from Develop unless the user moves on to another image.
So ignore from where an image was picked.
Would you consider this a bug? Or a "feature"?
Do you see the same in LR4.2 or 4.3RC? Behaviour on a Mac?
    Cornelia

There is a feature request that has been around for a long time to be able to "lock" the contents of a smart collection so you can work on the photos in it, before "releasing" it for recomputed contents.
My workaround is to copy from smart collection to dumb (I encountered this so often that I created a 1-keystroke plugin mini-feature to help). Before that I actually used a private keyword whose presence was enough to hold a photo in a smart collection (set the keyword to work on photos, clear the keyword to release them). Then as long as you add that keyword as criteria to every smart collection you may edit in, and add the keyword to every photo in the collection that you may work on... - yuck.

  • Learning Filtering: Smart Collections doesn't show all filtered images

I'm studying using Classroom In A Book so this test is small and only using the few images provided on the CIAB CD.
It says in the book that a Smart Collection is a selection filtered according to whatever rules you specify.
This is fine, but when I click the down arrow to the left side of the screen to see the listings under Smart Collections only some of the filtered images are shown. Images that I marked with red are shown as a Smart Collection. Images that I marked with Green (only one) does not show. A single image that I marked with five stars shows up as a Smart Collection, so it can't be that you need more than one item marked before it shows up as a Smart Collection. I made sure that I have highlighted the folder that contains the images (made it local) and that they are displayed in Library Mode and in Grid View.
What might cause some of the images I have applied filter attributes to not to show up in Smart Collections?
    TIA,
    Ken

What does the book say? It says "a Smart Collection is a selection filtered according to whatever rules you specify." It means the rules you specify for you r smart collection. These are default "canned" lightroom collections. The first happens to have the rule "show labelled with red", the second — "show 5-star images". Images tha match the rules defined in a SC - are displayed in that SC.
Double-click any smart collection to see its rules.
To create a new smart collection with your own rules, click Library>New Smart Collection.
The Smart Collections I have were created without me double-clicking on anything. The book just told me to try out some of the ways to mark images and to try out each way. All of a sudden, Smart Collections appeared with some of the marked images. I was just wondering why it stopped at some but did not do them all? Also, what if I don't want Smart Collections at this point? How do I turn it off from making arbitrary Smart Collections without my prompting?
Don't get me wrong dorin_nicolaescu, I am a beginner and know nothing. You sound like you have a good grip on what Smart Collections are and how they work. What you have writtenis helpful, especially the part about "To create a new smart collection with your own rules, click Library>New Smart Collection."
I am still in a Fog about why Smart Collections starts collections on its own.
