Stars above song title list?

This is a weird question, but when I'm playing a song on my iPhone and am viewing the title of the song, a series of stars (up to five) appears on my screen. I can reduce the number my moving my finger across them. What are these? TIA!

This is a rating system for itunes. The stars enable you to rate the song between 1 and 5 stars so that when you sync the iphone back to itunes, the rating will be moved back into itunes.
In itunes there is a column for rating that you can view and sort by.
Also, you can use the smart playlist function on the rating system.
Hope this helps.

  • Printing I Tunes CD Song-Title Listing

The ITunes Song-Title feature allows for three types of Song-Title lists being available for printing, namely...Song Listing....Album Listing  and CD Jewel Case.Since updating to the 11.0.0.63 version of ITunes I've been experiencing problems with the CD Jewel Case feature. It prints the  listing with the song titles one over each other, making them illegible. The other two features are printing properly so I assume it is not a Printer problem but more likely a  Program glitz.. I would appreciate any advise in solving this problem...Thanks

Good news! I received an iTunes update (11.0.1.12) from Apple today and the problem is fixed.

  • Song title listing error

Hello one and all,  Not being picky here, but, This album: Gonzalo Rubalcaba – The Trio seems to have suffered from a listing malfunction. The point being, the first track: 'Caravan' and second track: 'Hot House' have the titles the wrong way round.... That is of course, presuming  it's not a marketing coup on the artists behalf... which raises self question..So... Touché if thats the case.  Track two is unarguably Caravan though...   Let the debate commence.  o o o _@"    < a snail spider chicken laying eggs....

Done as instructed.  Many Thanks for a quick, and to the point answer.  Am I a happy, soon to be a 6 year premium customer....?   Absolutely.  _@"

  • My songs are in my iTunes library but the song titles do not show up on the songs list.

I have an older generation iPod nano, do I need to go back to an older version of iTunes so I can see the song titles on the song list? If so, does anyone have a link to the oder verson?

Does anyone know of an audio CD burner that will consistently label the original information?
Audio CDs do NOT have info except for CD-TEXT, no matter which program you use.
The Redbook audio CD standard does not allow for anything except CD-TEXT.
iTunes will write CD-TEXT but it will not read CD-TEXT.
You can burn data CDs and all the info will be retained and can be played in iTunes.

  • How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? They are there but the individual song titles aren't listed. They are only listed by album. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also, when I click on music, it will not list options.

My itunes account is messed up. How can I restore my playlist folders in itunes? The list's are there but the individual song titles aren't. They are only listed by album. I can only see the song titles as they are played at the top of my itunes. This makes it very difficult to find songs in my playlist.  Also when in the itunes store, I am not able to see music genre choices, or search for a song or group.
    Thank you

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

    Hi TKCDM1!
You should try to get this purchase onto your iOS device by using the suggestions in the following article:

  • My computer crashed and I saved my songs to a folder. now that I have new comp with itunes how do I transfer the songs back into itunes while keeping the titles in tact?  When they transferred back in only about half of them had the titles listed.

I want to transfer my songs from the old iTunes that I saved toi the new iTunes on my computer from a file I saved and keep the song titles in tact. how do I do this.?

It is probably not wise to leave your e-mail and phone number on a public forum.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer. Use your backup copy to put everything back.
    You purchase one download only.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

  • Sync "smart playlist" without song-titles?

Is it possible to synchronize only a smart playlist without all the song-titles what are included?
A example; In i Tunes i have a very large song library on my mac. Then i have synchronized some titles, with "Check Selection" mode. Now i have a "Smart Playlist" on i-tunes, that includes only song-titles, that i haven't "rated" before. Now, is it possible to import/sync only the "Smart-Playlist" without all the song-titles that are included on Itunes?
So i want only have the smart-playlist on my ipod-touch, to hear the unrated songs, that are already synced.
Other example, i have a smart playlist that includes only the song-titles, rated from 1 till 3 stars. Now i want that smart playlist on the iPod, to hear only the songs, rated from 1 till 3 stars, i already synced on the IPod.
Problem is this..: When i sinc a smart-list like that, the memory on my IPod is prompt overloaded...
I hope you understand what i mean, and would be great to have a solution for that...

  • Strange song titles after transfering backup music to iPod through iTunes

Hi, i recently lost my iPod classic(80GB) which i have been using soly as a music player. Luckily i had made a backup before i lost it. I then baught a new iPod classic(160GB) and *transfered my backup to my new iPod through iTunes*. This workded fine, except that *alot of the songs titles have been changed to something like: AYFV, GGVE, YVOB etc* ( i transfered my backed up music directly to my connected iPod, not putting them in the iTunes Library first )
I have about 9000 songs on it, and i dont know how to find many of the songs i like and love. I remember most of my songs by its Tittle rather than Artist or Album. I have a Samsung Galaxy with SoundHound downloaded... but scrolling through 9000 songs to find the 'corrupted' titles and changing them kinda throws me off
Why has this happened? What can i do about it? How can i prevent this from happening in the future? Can i back up my playlists as well?

Most media files contain some form of tag which records details such as the title, track number, artist. etc. If you import such a file into iTunes then iTunes will read the tag data from it and list the data that it has found. For files which don't have a tag, typically those in .wav format but .mp3 files don't have to have tags, the only information iTunes has when it imports will be the filename.
Although the tag can record much of the metadata (data about data) of the file, certain information such as ratings, playcounts and playlist membership is stored in a database. There is a database for your local iTunes library and a database on the iPod. Putting the media files onto the iPod in their XXXX.<ext> format *is not enough* for them installed into the iPod's database. Despite your description above, if you were able to restore your iPod backup to a new device, then you must have backed up and then restored the whole drive, not just the Music folder. If you still have the whole image and a compatible device then you can do this again.
When iTunes places media on an iPod it uses the F00-FXX folders and XXXX.<ext> filenames in a scheme called a hash table. The details aren't important, but it is a way of efficiently relabelling files with much shorter filenames that won't clash with each other. As a by-product it also discourages casual piracy from the iPod's drive since you don't know which file is which.
If you only have the media files then, as you have seen, the best you can do is import them into iTunes. Those which have tags will be correctly reorganised. Those without will be given their current filenames as their track names and placed in the Unknown Artist\Unknown Album folder. I would suspect that most of these files will be in .wav format in which case you will have to listen to and rename them one at a time. If however there are files in .mp3 or .acc format then you may be able to build tags for them using MusicBrainz Picard Tagger. iTunes won't detect any updates you make with third party tools, but I have a script for that called UpdateTagInfo.
Given how easy it is for an iPod to be lost, stolen or damaged it should not be relied upon as the only place for your media. It makes much more sense to to maintain your library in iTunes on your computer, then sync that library to the device. Instead of backing up the device, which takes ages each time and limits you to replacing it with an identical device, back up the library.
*Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows Only)*
Grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. And if your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes.

  • Batch rename specific song titles in iTunes

    Hi,
I'm thinking about writing a program that will go through my iTunes library to (1) find all songs with a specific characteristic and then (2) append a prefix to those song titles.
For instance, I have a bunch of tracks with general title:
         artist_album_version_track_123456
and I would like to append a single string to each track title, so I get something like:
         MyString_artist_album_version_track_123456.
In other words, one track title may be something like : Coldplay_Yellow_Parachutes_349203. So, there are three strings (with underscores), followed by a six digit integer.
I would like to append something to the beginning of all the tracks that end in a six digit integer. So, in the last example, the program would take that title and change it to something like:
         Zweit234_Coldplay_Yellow_Parachutes_349203
In particular, I only want to append one string to the beginning of the track title, so the string DOES NOT change with the track title. In the above case, all track titles would have Zweit234_ appended to them.
The reason I need to automate this task is because I have about 80,000+ tracks to rename.
Ideally, I can create an executable script that the user runs and the entire process is completed, without any additional user interaction.
I'm looking into ways to interact with iTunes data using AppleScript and Java, but I was hoping someone might have some ideas or, at least, be able to point me in the right direction.
Any help would really be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi red_menace,
Your last post really helped and I was hoping you could help with another question I have. I used your script to output the data to a text file and then wrote something in java to sort the items I wanted. So now I have a text file with all the tracks that I would like to change that looks like:
    Track1
    Track2
    Track3
    Track4
    Track5
    etc...
Now, I wrote an AppleScript that will append something to the prefix of my song name, but I'm not sure how to run through the names that I have in the text file. I've tried changing the text file into a list and then saying something like:
    set listOfTracks to {}
set Tracks to paragraphs of (read POSIX file "filepath")
    repeat with nextLine in Tracks
if length of nextLine is greater than 0 then
copy nextLine to end of listOfTracks
              end if
    end repeat
    tell application "iTunes"
              set sel to listOfTracks
    -- Rest of Code --
    end tell
My script actually doesn't pop up any errors, but it also doesn't work. I've tried looking into finding the location of each of the tracks and then making a playlist with those tracks, and then just changing everything in the playlist, but that hasn't really gone that well either.
So, my question is: How can I create a playlist in AppleScript using the tracks listed in a text file?
My attempts so far have really fallen flat.
I would really appreciate your help!

  • Languages: Some song titles do not show up on iPod menus

    Hi,
I have a few Thai CDs that I have uploaded to my iPod. Unfortunately, the song titles that are using Thai script do not show up in the iPod lists (they show as blank). Is there any way to correct this problem short of translating the names to English in iTunes (the Thai names display correctly in iTunes)?
    Thanks,
    Robert

The iPod does not yet support Thai (look at the tech specs). However some people have put together a hack, check here for info:

  • CD song titles do not appear

I recently burned a CD with iTunes using the "include CD text" option. However, the only iTunes where the song titles show is the computer the CD was created on. Can anyone tell me why this is the case? If this is a quirk with iTunes, I will have to create my CDs using another program.

iTunes can write CD Text, but cannot read it. You can find a list of ripping tools that will read CD Text here.
If you don't have time to read the list, here is a summary: almost all ripping tools can read CD Text except iTunes.

I recently purchased songs from my iphone.  All good...  But I then went to put them on my ipod touch.  They seemed to have downloaded but the songs wont play and the song title/the text, appears in a grey colour and there is a downlaod symbol in front of the song title.  what do i do next??  They play on my iphone and from the itunes library but not from my ipod touch.

If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup.

  • I downloaded latest version of iTunes for PC on my XP.  Works fine.  Connected my iPhone 5. I can see it.  Cannot transfer any of my music to iPhone.  I pull song to the right of screen, phone access pops open, plus sign on song title, drop it in, nothing

    1) Downloaded latest iTunes version onto PC
    2) connected iPhone 5 to PC
    3) Transferred songs from my files to iPhone - everything worked ok.
    4) downloaded app from Mac appstore - iConverter - to convert ringtones for use on iPhone
    5) converted ringtones as instructed and got them over to iPhone to use - in process, had to SYNC tones and therefore, lost all the music files I had on iPhone.
    6) went back to iTunes to copy over music files again and nothing would transfer.  The iPhone listing on the right would pull out when I'd drag the music file over.  A + sign would show on the song title and I would drop it in.  I check my iPhone music and nothing is there.
    7) also, a couple of songs somehow transferred in on their own and I can't delete them from the iPhone.
    8) if I try to SYNC my music to the phone, it will erase the ringtones.
