Start a slideshow that picks the image in the catalog randomly?

Dear all
I wonder:
Is it possible to start a slideshow that randomly picks the images from the catalog (or from at selection of images in the catalog)?
Regards
Hans Brodin

You might try using this application, http://www.freemacware.com/desktop-movie-player, that will let you use a movie for your desktop picture and then hafve your Mac boot up to the desktop.

I have my catalog "Back Up Each Time Lightroom Exits" checked, and always have. That means the catalog should have been backed-up and saved everyday, if not more than once on some dates. So with a a major problem now and needing to use the Catalog backup from last Friday, I go to my Lightroom Backups folder - and the most recent one showing not only isn't yesterday, it's OCTOBER 28 !?? Where the hell are the daily backups between October 28 and November 14?

Oh wow - JET LAG strikes agin - my apologies; I have located the missing weeks of back-ups. After getting home from a 30-day trip to Europe, I had changed the location of my LR catalog back-ups to an external drive, and forgot that I did that. I have found them, and all is good. Never operate Heavy Machinery without enough rest. Cheers

  • My late 2010 MBP is having a noise on the upper left hand side while starting up. is that from the internal fans or the HDD? is it cause for worry? am i going to lose the comp or the data?

there is a noise from the upper left side of the machine at the time of starting up? is that from the HDD or the motherboard fan or the processor fan? recently my 3.5 year old HP laptop crashed and it was only later that i came to know that the heating issues had led to the motherboard being affected. i want to avoid such problems with my MBP.
i would be grateful if some one could reassure me as to the probabilities of the problem which i am facing from the machine. the noise mentioned above is mostly at start up but at times also at the time of running of the machine though more intermittently so.

Are you still under warranty? If so, call Apple and report the problem and get a case number. If you do have a hardware problem, a case number will document that it originally occurred under warranty, and Apple will honor your warranty until the problem is fixed.
You can also run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It will be on one of the grey system discs that originally came with your computer. On your model, it may also be possible to boot to it by holding down "D" as you boot up. If the AHT detects a hardware problem with your fan or hard drive, you will get an error code.
Alternatively, if you have access to an Apple Store, you can make an appointment at the genius bar and have a hardware test run.
There is also a utility you can run which will give a good check on the physical health of your hard drive:
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
SMART Utility seems to be a bit more critical than Disk Utility, and may be able to detect impending drive failure sooner. You can download the demo and run it several times for free.
Also, here's a link where you can listen to failing hard drive sounds:
    http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
If you do have a hardware problem, a hardware test should detect it. If it's a fan, you want to replace it ASAP. If it's one of two, wouldn't hurt to replace both of them.
If the hardware tests don't show anything, you may have some other problem like maybe a bit of trash or debris caught up in your fan which is making noise. It wouldn't hurt to keep tabs on your fans with something like iStatPro.
    Good luck!

  • Apple TV Reboots every time it starts a slideshow that is home shared.

Just bought a 2nd Gen Apple TV to replace my first gen with and for whatever reason, every time it enters into a slideshow, it crashes and reboots itself. So far it looks like it only does this with pictures that I am sharing using Home Share and iTunes.

I am experiencing something similar as well. I am speaking of the slideshow screensaver. It only just started happening in the past month. It may be only with certain screensaver slideshows, I am not sure. There seems to be a pattern. The first time it happens, it just stops playing the media and reports an error with the content. The second time it happens, it jumps back to the default home screen on the Apple TV 2. Then on the third time, it resets itself (reboots).
    It's very strange.

  • How to start a slideshow not from the first photo in iPhone 11?

In iPhoto 06 and 08 I could start, or restart, a slideshow from any photo by simply clicking on this photo in the 'filmstream' and then click 'start'. This appears to be no longer possible in iPhoto 11; e.g. the slideshow always starts with the first photo in the filmstream. Why?

Thanks guys, for your prompt reply. I guess the correct lingo is not 'filmstream' but 'photo browser'. I have provided Apple with my feedback.
Can anyone tell me the rational behind why something that once worked beautifully in older versions of iPhoto, the latest iPhoto now works differently. Experience and annoyance like this once brought me into the Apple universe shunning Microsoft.
I got used to, and used it often in my presentations, to start a saved slideshow from any slide I selected in the photo browser. My presentations are from several trips throughout the year in chronological order, displaying unattended in the background at annual social parties. But often party guests would come up and request to see photos from a specific trip. It was easy to stop the show and restart it from anywhere in the stream. I fail to understand why this feature was removed.

  • Sharing a lightroom catalog - Does housing the catalog and images on an external hard drive work?

I will be managing a small portion of a client's overall image workflow by updating their web prescence on a regular basis with new work and retagging/uploading old work. I believe this requires the catalog and the image library  to be housed on an external hard drive that can travel between the two of us. We are both working on PC's with LR 5.3.
The workflow would look something like this:
Client downloads new images onto external hard drive and imports into LR
    "ClientCatalog" is created
Flags Picks and Creates a Collection from those Picks
Hard drive is handed off to me where I open "ClientCatalog"
    Make suggested edits to images
    add detailed tags and metadata
upload to various social media sites and websites
    return hard drive to client
Is there potential problem with this workflow? My assumption is that if everything is housed on the external hard drive then there are no worries about the catalog containing all the latest updates. Can anyone fill me in on potential problems I might have overlooked? Are there any "safety protocols" you would add in to this workflow (besides mirroring everythign on another hard drive) that you would suggest?

I ran into this problem with my own catalog a few weeks ago. I plugged my external hard drive into a different USB and everything was gone.
Not gone, just mis-addressed. It can be re-addressed as necessary. I believe it is enough on MacOs, to name the drive. On Windows, the details vary by OS version (Google for instructions) but this is for Win7:
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/change-drive-letters-windows-7.htm
and it is a good idea to assign a drive letter quite a bit later in the alphabet, to restrict the chance of ever finding that letter already taken. For example, it could be X: for external drive, or P: for plug-in drive, or whatever makes sense to you...
After doing this, on re-starting Lightroom and opening the Catalog, the images will at first go offline (previously used location not found). To get them back online, it will be necessary to re-browse the parent folder for all your image folders, to reflect its new location under the new drive reference. That done, the Catalog location info for all the images and subfolders located under that parent folder, will be updated automatically. If this parent is not currently showing in the LR Folders list, you can right-click and choose "Show Parent". LR's display then reorganises to reflect this actual hierarchy.

  • Upgraded to Premiere Elements 12 and unlimited storage .. Elements program cannot find the catalog.

Upgraded to Premiere Elements 12 and unlimited storage per Adobe staff, only problems since. Once I got catalog to properly start loading to Revel the new software wrongly messaged was that it was completely up to date. Now when i tried to start Elements program cannot find the catalog. I am the type person that am willing to pay to get this resolved so who do I call? I am doing this as a hobby and this is not fun etc... many useless unpleasant hours.

I appreciate what you are both saying -- but it is not the music that is the problem.  The video itself is NOT blocked - you can view it on a computer -- but when you try to view it on ipad/iphone the message says, "not available on this platform".  Here is a link to a video I did in Elements 9 on Tuesday:
    http://youtu.be/06TaM22SkdE
Here is the link to the video done last night in 11:

The "raw files" are both adobe flash.flv -- it's just not making sense...
    Thank you!!!

  • What happens to the catalog with an improper shutdown?

I am wondering what happens to the catalog when lightroom does not shut down properly.
After using lightroom for almost 2 years with no problems, the past few days have just been insane with issues and lost work.
Today, our power went out while I was working and when I turned my computer back on, sure enough my catalog was corrupt.
Thankfully It was able to repair itself. It got me thinking though, I have had this happen a few times before in the past couple years and I have NEVER had a damaged catalog until this week. What happens with an improper shut down that screws the catalog up so badly?
I am now to the point where I am terrified to work in fear that I will lose everything. I am hoping the XMP thing will save my butt in the future, but should I always have to be worried like this? Lightroom just doesn't feel as strong as it used to now that everything we have worked on this week has been damaged...

A crash of any sort while you're working with any complex application with major work going on is disheartening/frightening/annoying. I have been fortunate to have escaped any O/S or power deficiencies in my time with LR, but no one is completely immune.
If you have major stuff going on and aren't backed up the way you'd like, just quit LR, make a copy of the current catalog, .lrcat, and relaunch. You can also send the metadata to the files, as you've noted, but I like the former way. Or do both!  -Hope this helps allay some fear.

  • IPhoto rotates images in slideshow even though the thumbnail for that images has the correct orientation.

This problem seems bizarre to me considering iPhoto 11 has worked with out a hitch since I upgraded from 09 ages ago.  The photos in my album suddenly changed orientation from landscape to portrait and vice versa and sometimes upside down.  I first notice this problem after I tried to click and drag a large number of photos directly from iPhoto to Finder.  I did a Command-A to highlight all the photos from my album and tried to drag them to a folder in Finder.  There are 34,000 photo in this album but only half were copied, (I guess 34,000 items is too much for Lion to copy all at once).  I tried fixing this orientation problem by highlighting all affected photos and selecting "Revert to Original" which fixed the orientation of the thumbnails.  But when you double click on a thumbnail to view the pictures or view the album in a slideshow, some of the pictures still have the incorrect orientation but most were corrected.  Also if I double click on an affected photos to edit it with iPhoto image editor the image suddenly orientates itself correctly.  Then as soon as I close the image editor and view the photo or start a slide show it's displayed with the incorrect orientation again.   How is that possible that all my thumbnails are orientated properly but when I view the photo it's rotated sideways or sometimes rotated upside down?    Any help or insight to my problem would be much appreciated.

Revereting to original will not fix the problem.  When you invoke that menu option iPhoto will read the file again, see the tag that tells it to rotate the file and will rerotate it.
The most reliable way to fix this is to rotate those file before they are imported into iPhoto. Upload from the camera to a folder on the Desktop, rotate those that need rotating, rename if desired and import.  I use Xee for that because it can rotate the file losslessly.

  • IPhoto Slideshow: Sometimes the slideshow starts at the last image, rather than the first. How do I ensure the slideshow commences at the first image?

iPhoto Slideshow: Sometimes the slideshow starts at the last image, rather than the first. How do I ensure the slideshow commences at the first image?

Is this a slideshow played directly from an album or Event or one created in the slideshow mode?
If it's the former that's been a problem for a many users. There hasn't been a firm fix found for it as yet.
There is a workaround.  Put the photos in the order you want, select them all and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text menu option.  Put in Slide and check the box to add a sequential number to give you Slide-01, Slide-02, etc.
Now when clicking the play button at the bottom of the Album or Event window the slides will play in the order Slide-01, Slide-02, etc.
The best workaround is to use the iPhoto slideshow mode to crate the slideshow. There's been no reorts of similar problems in that mode.

  • I can't get my shuffle to play through all my playlists. Once I pick a playlist, it will play that one all  the way through and start over instead of playing the next one.

How do I get my shuffle to play all my playlists through their entirety?  I will select one and it will play all the way through and start over.  I want it to finish that one and move to the next playlist, and so on.

I think that's the way it's supposed to work.
You should just create another "merged" playlist that has ALL the songs from those playlists, with songs in the order you want them played, then use the play in order setting on the shuffle.
It won't take up any more space on the shuffle, because all of the songs will already be on the shuffle due to the separate playlists.

How can I create a slideshow that depicts only a version of a photo rather than the original?   Since the original and new versions are saved together, the aperture slideshow often choices the original rather than the desired version to display.

There are two things we use the name "Slideshow" for in Aperture:  a Slideshow Album, used for making Slideshows, and the Slideshow that is made.  (Imho, it is a design mistake to not call the containers used to create Slideshows, Books, etc., "Albums".)
The Slideshow will use the Album Pick from any Stack.  A good way to use Aperture is to promote the Image you want to regularly use (such as, for example, a Version with adjustments) to the top of the Stack.  This makes it the Stack Pick, and will be the default Album Pick.  If you haven't done that, you can still change the Album Pick for any Stack in a Slideshow Album.  Expand your Stack(s), select the Image in each Stack that you want to be the Album Pick (and thus shown in the Slideshow), and "Stacks➞Set Album Pick".  (Note the keyboard shortcut; there is also a Toolbar icon for this.)  The change is immediate.  The Slideshow will always show the Album Pick (or, if there is not one, the Stack Pick) for every Stack in your Slideshow Album.

  • IPhoto 11  slideshow mode decreases the image sharpness and quality

The images that weight over 5 MB and are fine and sharp become somewhat blured when displayed in the iPhoto '11 slideshow mode. The loss of image sharpness is just too big. The pictures look like they were made with a 100$ camera or even worse. I know the images are fine and big enough. I used picasa slideshow mode just to check. I saw a much better image quality and no noticable lose of sharpness.
Anyone has an idea why the iPhoto 11 slideshow mode looses so much image sharpness?

We all like iPhoto and its ease of use, good looks and fancy features.
However Aplle must concentrate on the core .... sufficient quality of the displayed images. The colors, sharpness, tones - the essence of photography
I understand that iPhoto is not the Aperture. But if the Slide Show mode virtually washes the sharpness away from the pictures than something is not right! Picture that is not sharp is worth the trash
If picasa slide show can do it I am sure iPhoto slide show can do it even better! We are waiting for the upgrade

  • Is it possible to open/start a slideshow using a button on the home page?

Hi all. I want a slideshow on the home page of my graphic design website, but ideally I want it to pop up 'in place' when a button is pressed (these buttons are for things like 'illustration', 'print design', 'logo design' etc, with each slideshow being a portfolio of images. Is this possible to do? So instead of the buttons each linking to their own page, they link to a slideshow that pops up on screen?
Let me know if you require further info.

    Yes you can design this.
Use any composition , trigger can be used as button which would open container on click. In container insert slideshow with images.
The images used can be linked to their specific pages.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit
