Start Button only Prompts Windows Power Options

Hello,
I have an odd issue whereby clicking the "Start" button does not bring up the Start Menu, but the Shut Down options menu pops up prompting me to either Shut Down, Reboot, Log Off, etc.
I removed any Group Policies in MMC associated with any profiles. I also removed the SID Folders within C:\windows\system32\GroupPolicyUsers.
What settings would change the behavior of the Start Menu?

Hi Brenton,
That is interesting that removing the Group Policy from MMC and the user's GP folder does not set the configured settings back to Not Configured. However, a reboot was performed after the removal, but I will inspect Policy settings once again during a Maintenance
Window tonight.
It is something that catches a lot of people. Group Policy is the "policy enforcer". So when you set a policy, like "set wallpaper to XYZ", it will make sure that the wall paper is XYZ. When you remove the group policy that tells the
wallpaper to be XYZ, it doesn't change it back to the original wallpaper, it just leaves it at XYZ and will allow the user to change it from that point forward.
This is also true for other policies on systems. Just because you remove the policy, it won't set things "back to default". You have to create a new Group Policy to set it "back to default", or manually set it back to default on the system
as described by MeipoXu.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad Power Manager/ Windows Power Options Issue: Display Re-awakens Immediately

I want to share my experience with setting idle timers under Lenovo Power Manager or Windows Power Options, respectively.
I noticed that every time the monitor just had dimmed or shut off according to my power savings options, it brightened up or turned on again only a few seconds later.
I had seen the same behavior before using my Dell Latitude laptop, so I came up with the solution relatively quickly this time.
The interference was caused by a Logitech wireless mouse, even though all drivers were installed correctly and the mouse was working flawlessly.
Installing the Logitech SetPoint firmware solved the problem in both cases without further steps being necessary.
Maybe this note will help other users facing the same issue. Good luck.

  • K430 ignores windows power options settings

I have a brand new Ideacentre K430.  One of my main annoyances with it is that, regardless of how I set Windows power option settings, it logs me out after just one minute idle time, and then requires a password to log me in again.
This is despite my having set the display to shut off after 45 minutes, to never go to sleep, and not to require a password on wakeup.
This is really annoying, as my work often involves switching back and forth between the computer and books/papers, so I need to be able to leave it a minute without retyping my password.  Can somebody help?!

Ok, I solved the problem.  Right-click on the desktop, click personalize, then click on screen saver.  Even if you have it set for no screen saver, it still uses the setting there for a period of inactivity to log you off.  This gives you options for delaying that forced log-off, or not requiring a password afterward.

  • T61, WinXP SP2: Windows Power Options vs Thinkpad Power Manager (Standby/LID/etc)

My message is similar to this one:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&message.id=4885
but show clear source of problem.
    So I start...
I have [brand new ] T61 with XP SP2 Russian, installed from R&R disks from Lenovo through Vista Downgrade deal.
    1. I set Windows Power Management (W.P.M.) to:
    - standby when closing lid
    - asks for password after wake up from Anabiosis (standby or hibernate).
    2. Close lid -- notebook go to standby; open lid -- notebook wakes up. Fine.
    3. Close lid -- nothing to do. Open lid - notebook runned a usual, no standby preparations ;(
    4. Go to ThinkPad Power Manager (TP.P.M.) (useful left-click from Big Green Gauge in taskbar) -- all settings looks fine: options, checkboxes etc.
    5. Open W.P.M. -- all settings messed up with random values:
    - "no action" on closing lid
    - "asks for password" checkbox not checked (this field varies through few tests).
    6. Setting up needed options in W.P.M. again, repeat steps 2..3..4 -- nothing changes: W.P.M. saves options for first close lid action, then options messed up.
    ==================================
As I see, ThinkPad Power Manager builds on top of Windows Power Management and overwrites its options on some actions (power up/power down/close lid/etc) in unsmart way, turn off close lid action and bring *potentially security breach* by resetting option for asking password.
    ==================================
My other experience on close/open lid:
    - Very old R43 at my work acts fine. TP.P.M. installed.
    - HP 6820s works fine with standard W.P.M.
    - HP nx7010 works fine with standard W.P.M.
    Software versions:
    - ThinkPad Power Management Driver: 1.44
    - ThinkPad Power Manager: 1.30b
    - All the hotfixes listed in similar topics installed by R&R disks
    ==================================
I... am... VERY... DISAPPOINTED! (c) Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg
Is there a way to fix this TP Power Management suite behaviour?
Should I reinstall some of components?
Can I throw out TP Power Management toys and use WinXP native Power Management, ot there will be some ghosts like "yellow undrivered question marks" in Device Manager?
    Thank you.

I solved this trouble without Lenovo intervention:
    - create clean WinXP Pro setup disk from R&R recovery diskset and install WinXP from it;
    - install all the TP utilities & drivers manually, checking LID Close/LID open actions twice after each program;
    - make full system backup (not R&R way) every 3..4 installed programs.
Entire process spend one week of my time.

  • Starting up showing two Windows 7 options.

When I start the computer. It goes to a black screen with writting. It shows two windows operating systems and wants me to pick one. One says that the correct installer isn't there. The other one runs up just like the computer did normally. It will go
to login and everything. But after that black screen my keyboards quit working so I am unable to type. Please help me!!!

    Hi,
It seems that you have installed two Operation systems on your computer, one of them is corrupted, in this situation, you can WinRE to repair this boot issue if you have the installation media:

  • Is there a "start" button

How do I browse installed software? Do Macs have a "start" button similar to Windows or do I just go to "applications" in my hard drive?

Yeah, but the start button brings up a menu that can keep expanding, and you can manuver through all the programs and subcategories easily by just moving the mouse around, no clicking needed until you get where you want to go (what program you want to run). Once you do that, then the Start menu goes back into hiding so you don't have to close or minimize the folder to get it to not be shown anymore. Also, shortcut icons on the desktop are much more used which act just like the dock does really, and there are also the options for the Quick Launch of programs, program icons in the system tray (where the clock is) where you can select which ones to "hide" all the time or just when inactive... etc.
There are also many programs that let you customize and configure the start menu, quick launch and system tray areas to the way you want them, as well as the right click button menu and so forth. There are also many different "dock" applications available.
And while you can say that Microsoft or the other 3rd Party companies stole those ideas from OSX (which may be true), it doesn't change the fact that Windows has tons of different options available, many with freeware even...
Personally, I really do like OSX alot, as the only thing I have always disliked and still do, is the fact that the top menu bar changes with each program and you have to go into the recent applications list to go back to another program window that is still open to access it (if you are using Full Screen sized program windows).
This above, compared to windows with the tabs for each open application (if not in the system tray as an icon), where you can easily just click on the tab you want and it takes over the current focus, or you can have all be "hidden" by being minimized and just shown by the tab in the bottom bar.
Windows also actually closes the program when you hit the "close window" button on it, instead of making it look gone but still having it's processes running (which is how the windows Mobile OS for PDAs is, and there are a million different freeware applications that have been created to use to help correct this problem by actually taking over the process and letting you always "close" with the x or letting it ask you etc. This shows that there are many others out there like me, that like to permanently close an application if we know we will not be using it again for quite a while, and do it easily.
There may be many that like OSX the way it is now, which is fine too, to each their own... But, I do like the option of being able to choose which style I would like to use (which windows does at least by having more 3rd party applications expand the OS experience) and I know I would just like to see more options available for OSX in the future.

  • Disabling Prompt Window

I have a Crystal Report which is called from a portal via OpenDoc. The OpenDoc call passes the parameters to the report, hence the report opens in CR viewer without the prompt window coming up. However, when the user clicks the refresh button, the prompt window comes up.
Is there any way to disable the prompt window from coming up when the report is manually refreshed? Or, is there a way to refresh the report with the same parameters so that the prompt window does not come up even when the user clicks on refresh button? Or, it is possible to disable to refresh button on CR viewer?
    Thanks for your help!

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

Thanks for the question. From the information you provided, it sounds like the iMac is successfully turning on, however video is not displayed. These symptoms can usually be isolated further by the troubleshooting steps in this article:

  • Firefox 4 download. Since, Windows start button options changed. Should be browser agnostic, can you please tell me how to fix this? While I love Firefox, this has me livid! (1 irony, Firfox is no longer in my Start button menu.)

I first noticed an issue when looking for something normally located in the Accessories folder of MS programs. What I found upon clicking on "All Programs" was not the program file/folder tree I expected but rather a direct list of all files in the Program Files folder. I then went to open a new session of Firefox to research that issue and noticed my basic Start button options were also changed. Now, even focus for event-driven events is not working correctly. Again, while I love Firefox, this needs to be fixed immediately or I will be forced to uninstall the product just to function.

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?

  • My MacBook Pro 13in Mid-2010 won't start unless I hold the power button for about 10 seconds! Help Please!

    Hello.
    I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch (mid-2010):
Processor: 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
    Running Mac OS X 10.7.2
Yesterday I opened my computer (was sleeping as usual) and the screen just flasehed white and the computer powered off. The magnetic electricity thingy was connected and was green, so it was fully charged, and connected to the electricity.
Since it powered off, I tried turning it on again, and again, one second after starting to boot up, screen flashed white and the computer powered off.
I read somewhere I should hold down the power button longer, so I did, and it booted up. That's why I am able to write this. But every time I turn it off or put it to sleep, it does the same thing when I boot up.
If I don't hold the power button for 10 seconds or so, the computer won't work.
Then today, I did a backup of my entie hard drive, just in case. Later, I started using Excel, and about 1 hour after I was on it, suddenly it got really slow. Like I would click on a program like Safari, and it would take over 30-45 secs to start and be ready. And my computer is usually really fast!
I went on the Internet again, started in safe mode, boot up with option+command+P+R to reset PRAM, and nothing worked. Then suddenly on one turn-off/turn-on (since I can't restart because the computer only starts if I hold the power button for 10 seconds), again it is working at normal speed.
What can this be? Any ideas?
I really appreciate your time and help in advance
    Gaby

I forgot to say I had already tried that as well. Just in case, I just tried it again and there was no change :S
Are you running the Apple-supplied RAM? Have you run Apple Hardware Test? I don't know what else you've tried, but this may be time to do a fresh install of Lion if you have not done so since installing Lion.

  • Where are power options saved in the Windows registry?

The problem is that a customer IT department did something wrong during deploying GP preferences. Now nothing is working and we have to delete all settings, that the new GP preferences I newly created will work.
Now GP preferences is not working on 300 clients. I don't know what they have done. If we reinstall the clients, GP preferences (power settings) are working fine. They have only used GP preferences for power settings. No other changes before the problem started.
My senior manager told me to delete power options / settings in the Windows registry. So I can delete this?

Whenever a prompt window opens, the first option is highlighted in blue. Tried restarting, but the problem persisted. I don't recall doing anything unusual when the problem started.

The fact that the cancel button (first option) is outlined in blue is what's bugging me. I've never seen this happen before. This happens with every single dialog/prompt window.
