When I turn on my Mac I get a grey screen with a folder with a question mark . Have tried the disk utility to no avail as the disk has apparently dismounted and will not mount even though the mount option is available. I have recently upgraded from snow leopard go os x maverick

This could be a software/state problem or a hardware problem.  In your case it sounds like the latter but you should try the steps below in case it might help.

  • Lenovo U310: Clean Windows 7 Installation Guide (including Rapid Start and Caching)

    Hi there,
this is the first time that I am writing such a guide/tutorial/whatever you may call it – there are probably better ones, but though not being a total computer noob, it took me almost one week to get this pretty (now again) little beast running again. So hopefully this helps some others to avoid such stupid downtimes.
A brief overview on what has happened to my original win 7 Home Premium:
As some may know, this laptop is very well usable as a “Hackintosh” called Macbook clone. So that’s what I did. It turned out to be nice, but I wanted to go back to Windows after a while, using a clean W7 Pro installation to start over. Actually an easy task, format all drives, install Windows, be happy. Just as I had been doing this for years. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a real challenge. First, I couldn’t “see” my drives during installation (and thus not install), then I got random errors during installation aborting it at different points and finally rapid start and caching didn’t work. Every time I tried to activate them (after Win installation), it crashed my PC. I even found an (official Lenovo!) guide stating to install W7 on the SSD, which worked, but sucks due to space limitations. Oh and another very nice thing: The SSD showed up during WIN installation (but not the classical hard drive) stating it was about 60 GB. So as you can see, I have had a lot of different tries and errors. Why I didn’t use Lenovo Easy Recover? As said before, I erased all partitions…
Before we start: If you have a good Windows running on the Laptop, do yourself a favor and disconnect the RAID 0 disks using the Intel Rapid Storage Application before(!!!) proceeding. It will make things much easier. And don’t forget to get all you data on an external drive or something.
    Ok, now let’s start.
1.)    Prepare a USB Stick with the following driver
             http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=21730 (choose f6flpy-x64.zip If you’re running a
64-bit system (standard nowadays), take f6flpy-x86.zip if it is a 32-bit Windows, just download and copy them
into the stick’s root directory) and plug this stick in one of the left side USB ports.
2.)    You’ll need Win 7 on either a DVD (plus external drive, for sure) or (bootable) USB stick
3.)    Connect your drive/stick (with W7) to the right side USB port.
4.)    Switch the computer on, immediately hit FN and F2. That will open the BIOS.
5.)    In the BIOS, navigate to the very right section (“save and exit”) and navigate the cursor to “load setup defaults”.
             Hit enter to approve.
6.)    After that, go to the “boot” tab and disable UEFI-boot.
7.)    Next, go one more tab to the left and set the controller setting to RAID (NOT AHCI or Compatible!!!).
8.)    Navigate the cursor down to “Intel Rapid Start” and hit enter. A submenu will pop up-
9.)    Disable the first entry in that window, that will make the rest be disabled as well.
10.) Navigate to the very right tab, this time hit save and exit.
    11.) The PC restarts.
12.) Immediately hit FN and F12 to open the boot selection menu. Select to boot from your W7 DVD drive or USB
            stick.
13.) Click yourself through the whole process of installing Windows 7 until the page comes up where you will have
to select where to install it.
14.) Click on “load drivers” and after a few seconds your downloaded driver should be there. Click ok to use them.
Please do this step even if you can see your drives (SSD Disk 0, 32 GB and HDD Disk 1, 465(<-?) GB) as you
would expect them – otherwise you’re very likely to get an error during the install process.
15.) Now erase all partitions on both drives and select the HDD as the drive to install W7 to – NOT THE SSD!!!!!
            Seriously, don’t choose the SSD.
16.) Windows will probably say that some extra partitions are necessary and so on, click ok and install Windows.
17.) After the installation has finished and you see your Desktop, I suggest you to proceed with the next steps in the
following order to see as early as possible if you are on the right way.
18.) Install the Chipset driver, restart.
19.) Install the Intel Rapid Storage “driver” and check the box where it asks to additionally install the control center.
            Reboot.
20.) Go into BIOS (FN and F2) and enable Intel Rapid Start (the one you disabled in Step 8 and 9)
    21.) Boot into Windows.
22.) Click on the Windows button, type cmd and right klick on the cmd.exe, select to run it as Admin.
23.) Now you’ll create a hibernation partition on the SSD. (which by now should be completely empty as we’ve
deleted all partitions in step 15)
24.) In the command prompt that we have just opened, type: (without quotas, for sure)
“diskpart” and hit the enter button
“list disk” and hit the enter button
Now you should see your ssd as disk 0 and your hdd as disk 1
If your ssd is disk 0 (that would be standard), write “select disk 0”, otherwise write: “select disk 1”, and hit the enter button.
Now write “create partition primary size=4096” and hit enter again. [if you have 4GB of ram, type 4096, if you have 8 GB of ram, use 8192]
Now write “detail disk” and hit enter to see the volume number behind the volume that we have just created (it is 4 GB or 8 respectively, should be easy to find), in my case that was “2”
Now type “select volume 2” if your 4 or 8 GB volume has number 2 as well, otherwise use the number you found out in step f. Hit enter.
Finally, type: “set id=84 override” and hit enter for one last time.
It should now say back that the id has been set successfully.
    Exit the command prompt. (close)
    25.) Reboot
26.) Install the Rapid Start driver. Reboot.
27.) Open the Intel Rapid Storage Application.
28.) Click on accelerate and approve the settings. Two RAID’s will be created. Reboot.
29.) Install the remaining drivers, have fun with Windows Update and that’s it!
Good luck to all of you… And hey Lenovo - wouldn't that have been your job after all these posts showing your costumers in trouble? Just my two cents...
If you want, you can now turn on UEFI-boot in BIOS.
PS: If, after installing all drivers, you happen to see one unknown device in your device manager – this one belongs to Lenovo Connect Software that came with your Laptop. (Updates FB, Email etc when PC is in sleep mode) If you install Lenovo Connect it’s going to be fine, however, I would not recommend it as it is said to use a lot of energy and cause some other problems. So just live with it, your PC is totally fine without it.
    Kind regards from Shanghai

Seriously guys, I can't use my 3 days old laptop. Some help would be mostly appreciated. At this point, the network connection issue doesn't show up anymore, it's just a blank screen after reboot. I reinstall windows and do it all over again just to achieve the same result.
Now couple of things caught my attention: as I load the "6flpy-x64.zip" driver from step 14, I get a message saying I need to install signed drivers, because unsigned ones are likely to mess up the system.
Secondly, I could not find any Rapid Storage Technology drivers for Windows 7 (particularly for U310 model), so I use the Windows 8 ones (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS031455), which seems a silly thing, yet I know of no alternatives.
Could it be any of these issues to cause my problem? Or smth else? Please help!

  • Buying an external hard drive

I just learned that memory and hard disk capacity are not the same thing. Anyway, since I've just increased my memory from 2 to 4 GB, while since my computer is now telling me that my "Starter Drive?" is full, I've decided to buy an external hard drive for my MacBook. However, since I don't know anything about them, I'd like to read a good article or two on selecting one before making my purchase, so I came here to see if anyone has any ideas on the subject. Can anyone make any suggestions?
I don't want to spend more than $150, preferably much less. Also, I want one that is EASY and SIMPLE to use. There will probably be other considerations, but not until I get some basic information on types, features, usages, etc.

    lenn5 wrote:
There's only a couple things I think about when purchasing an external drive.
    1. How much space do I need.
The minimum right now seems to be around 320GB for most people. That's what I have and it's fine more my needs. I don't edit video so I don't need a huge drive.
    2. What type of connection: Firewire, USB2, eSATA or a combination of them.
Mine has Firewire800/USB2. It comes with a FW 400 adapter so it works with my iMacCore Duo. I wouldn't get an external without Firewire. USB2 only is too slow.
    3. Brand.
That's up to the buyer. I chose Western Digital Studio drive. I'm mostly happy with it. Nice enclosure but is alittle noisy in a quiet room.
Most of the top drives are good. OWC, WD, G-Tech, LaCie ect.
Just do a search using the brand and review. There are alot of reviews on the net.
    4.Price
    Individual preference.
I've probably missed something but these are what's important to me.

Thanks. I have decided to buy one, but I just have to do more thinking about what to buy. At first, being a beginner, I was just thinking in terms of capacity (bigger must be better), but now that even Terrabytes can be obtained at reasonable prices, I question that. I haven't yet read anything that completely answered the question for me, but I will be reading more comparisons and buying guides in the near future. One thing I'm still thinking about is how to use it. Will it be better to use it for storage, or do I want it to be an active part of my computer. I might add that the main reason I want to get one is to improve the speed and efficiency of my computer. I've seen many, many articles that warned of the catastrophe of crashing discs, but that doesn't worry me. The first time that happened, I felt like I had lost a child, but the second, third, and fourth times it happened it didn't bother me so much. No, I'm really most interested in doing what I can to get my computer to run as fast and with as few complications as possible. You did remind me of one thing I hadn't thought of recently: noise. That's important. In fact, that's why I bought a Mac. After doing quite a bit of research, I had decided on buying the PC that was always wining popularity contests. I was just about to buy it, and even took a PC course at my college to get ready for it, when I realized that the Mac was meant for me because of its quiet operation (the PCs at school were just too noisy for me) and and its compactness. Of course, when I bought my printer, the compactness issue went out the window. Even so, I still think I made the right decision. I only regret replacing my desktop model with a laptop.

  • Internal hard drive replacement issue...(a bit wordy)

I am the second user of this white core duo MacBook - the boss's hand-me-down.
The original hard drive was almost full when I received the unit, so after using it for a while I decided to replace the internal drive. I have an external WD 320GB "My Passport" formatted for Mac use that works just fine - it keeps the Time Machine backups on one partition and a Carbon Copy Cloner image of the original internal drive on another.
I recently bought a WD 250GB Scorpio Blue (WD2500BPVT-00ZEST0), stuck it in the computer, formatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled), GUID) as a single partition and put the CCC image of the original drive on it. All was good. New drive booted and functioned as expected. Four days later it failed (question mark appearing on restart attempts). The disk utility applications in four different OS's failed to recognize the disk. Short story is WD sent me a replacement, but 320GB rather than the 250 - a WD3200BPVT-00ZEST0.
I eventually got the new drive partitioned and formatted and installed Snow Leopard from my update disk. All this transpired with the drive docked in an external USB dock.
During the OS install I took the opportunity to set it up in my name rather than my boss's name. (was this a mistake and the source of my problem, I wonder?)
I can boot from this newly built drive when it is docked, BUT NOT when it's installed internally in the laptop. It is recognized as an available start drive during restart, and I get the "apple", but the spinning wheel keeps on spinning without actually booting (or at least I get tired of waiting and the fan keeps spooling up - I eventually just turn the power off).
Is this drive, at 320Gb, too big for this laptop to use internally? (but the 250GB one worked)
Did I make a mistake in creating a different default ID (me rather than the boss) while installing the OS? Is the laptop "remembering" the user setup from the original small drive somehow and refusing to work with the new drive's new user?
This is my first "Mac" experience and I really like the way the OS treats me and the "look and feel" of the GUI, but this has been somewhat frustrating. (I WILL stick with it though, I plan on buying a new MBP next summer.)
Am I forever destined to live with the tiny original drive and be relegated to carrying around Passport drive to get most of my data files?
I now have three drives I can boot from, but I'd really like to have the big new one actually usable from inside the laptop rather than sitting in a dock (with all it's cables).
    Thanks for reading this far.

    OK, so push ahead...
    He's dead, Jim.
The hard drive works outside of the laptop.
Your USB enclosure probably runs slower or something.
Has there been some (unknown to me) change in the specifications of 2.5" SATA hard drives since the original one was spec'd for this laptop that renders the newer ones unusable?
I prefer to have other people keep up with this stuff instead of me. I buy pretty much all of my equipment from OWC. If they sell it, it will work with your Mac. Even if you don't buy from OWC (but you should), if you buy the same model numbers that they sell, you should be fine. OWC doesn't sell this drive. For me, that would be a red flag.
(WD claims their "advanced formatting" is OS X compatible without the realignment required by certain versions of Windows, but is it possible this is a hardware related issue with the MacBook?)
OWC does sell the "regular formatting" version of this drive (WDGWD3200BEVT). Perhaps it only works in newer machines. The WD support page also mentioned that cloning can screw up the drive. I never recommend cloning except in some very specific circumstances. I do that not because I know something, but because I don't. I'm not entirely sure what those clone tools are doing underneath and if they've been tested on these new drives.
Maybe put it back into the enclosure and partition it again into a single volume. Make sure to use the GUID option. Don't do anything else with it. Put it back into the Mac and try again. If it fails again, get a different drive.

  • New Hard Drive Installed on 4-1115DX

Hello I recently lost my hard drive but luckily backed up using AOEMI Backupper.  I purchased a new 500GB hard drive and installed it but now the 'D' 32GB SSD Drive is redundant? How do I re-enable the RAID rapid start drive. When I use the RAID software is shows the 32gb drive attached to a 0GB Drive. Then my new drive shows underneath. I can't get the SSD to talk to the new HDD.  Have I done something wrong as I can't see to find an answer.PS UEFI installed but ended up wiping all drives inc recovery drive when the HDD crashed. Thanks in advance guys

For some reason that is not unusual on an HP. You have to break the existing array that has the mSATA drive trapped. It is "degraded". You need to undo the array and then rebuid it and then use it to accelerate. You can do that through the "manage" tab.

  • I need information on how Adobe Drive works and how to set it up

    Hey folks,
believe it or not, but I have been searching a lot on the web already on how to find information how Adobe Drive works and how to set it up.
Most information that I found is old and seems to be valid only for older versions of Creative suite. Here in the company we use CS5.5 and will switch to CS6 soon.
I already downloaded Adobe Drive 3 and installed it on my Mac. Unfortunately I don't know what to do next? Do I need Adobe CQ to make it work? Or can I use it with an existing SVN infrastructure, that we have here? Actually I would like to access the SVN via Adobe Bridge. But after the installation of Adobe Drive my Bridge CS5.5 is crashing while starting up, and I didn't find out how to fix this again.
Actually I just found the manual for Adobe Drive 3 and read it. Seems to be easy in case its working. But it's not in my case, as mentioned above.
Any idea what could be the problem?

    Thanks,
in the meantime I managed to re-setup Adobe Drive 3 again. Bridge CS5.1 is still crashing (i have a log-file with a detailed error-report, if somebody knows how to extract information from this.
At least now I can start Drive as a standalone application.
So now my main question is how to connect Drive 3 to our subversion infrastructure in the company. Does anybody have information on this?

  • Top Questions for HERE Maps & Drive & Transit

This thread is to share some of the common issues that are being raised in relation to the HERE Maps, HERE Drive and HERE Transit releases.
Currently split in to the following sections:
    HERE Maps for Windows Phone
    HERE Drive for Windows Phone
    HERE Transit for Windows Phone
Nokia Maps & Drive for Symbian
    HERE Maps for Windows Phone
Can I sync my Maps favourites from my Symbian phone to my Windows Phone?
Yes. Just sync the favourites on your Symbian phone with here.com. See the user guide of your Symbian phone for info on how to do this.
Your favourites in here.com are automatically synced with your Windows Phone, if you're signed in to your Nokia account with your phone.
    Does HERE Maps work offline?
Yes, on Windows Phone 8 devices HERE Maps can be used also in offline mode.
With Nokia Maps on the Windows Phone 7 devices you need an online connection. In these devices the map data is streamed on as needed basis and it is not cached.
Can I start Drive navigation from HERE Maps in my Nokia Lumia phone?
Yes, on Windows Phone 8 devices you can start drive navigation from HERE Maps.
On Windows Phone 7 devices you need to go to the Nokia Drive application to start the navigation.
Why can't HERE Maps find my location?
Check that you've allowed HERE Maps and your phone to find your location.
    In HERE Maps
Go to Settings in the HERE Maps app and turn on Use your location
    In your phone settings
In your phone's main menu, tap Settings > location > on.
Things that can affect your GPS signal may include: being indoors, tall buildings, poor weather and some car windscreens. You'll also get a better fix on your location if you've got a data connection.
    HERE Drive for Windows Phone
Can I use HERE Drive without a data connection?
Yes. To use HERE Drive offline, tap Settings and choose Connection. You can then toggle between offline and online.
Search results might be limited in offline mode. To be able to navigate offline, you need to download a map to your phone.
What is the difference between HERE Maps and HERE Drive?
HERE Drive is an application for voice-guided turn-by-turn driving navigation. HERE Maps is a map application which shows your current position and interesting places around you. You can also plan routes in HERE Maps but the app will launch HERE Drive for turn-by-turn navigation
What's the difference between HERE Drive and HERE Drive+?
HERE Drive offers turn-by-turn navigation in a single country or area, depending on the country of your SIM. Worldwide navigation is possible by purchasing an upgrade.
HERE Drive+ is a premium app that comes with worldwide turn-by-turn navigation from the start. You can use it with or without a SIM.
Users of HERE Drive can buy an upgrade to HERE Drive+ through the Windows Phone Store.
    HERE Transit for Windows Phone
How do I install the HERE Transit application in my Windows Phone?
Download and install HERE Transit from Microsoft Store. Start Store in your phone and search for HERE Transit or browse in Nokia collection.
In Windows Phone 7 devices the corresponding app is Nokia Transport and it can be installed from Marketplace.
Why can't HERE Transit find my route?
If you're having trouble getting a route:
Make sure the date, time and time zone on your phone are set properly.
Check that you've got a data connection.
A point in your route might be in a region where no transport info is available.
The route is too long. HERE Transit is designed for use with local city public transport, not national or international transport.
Can I save routes in HERE Transit?
You can pin a journey from your current location as a tile to your Windows Phone start screen.
Select the options icon at the bottom of the screen, and then the pin icon.
Nokia Maps & Drive for Symbian
How do I install Maps 3.09 in my phone?
Maps 3.09 is available for compatible devices as part of the Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 bundle. Installing Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 will install the following applications in your phone:
    Nokia Maps 3.09
    Drive
    Places widget
    Public Transport v2
    Weather (not available in China)
    Guides
Check in (only available in China)
    Map Loader
You can install Nokia Maps Suite on your phone through one of the channels below:
SW Update menu on your phone
Nokia Suite (select Software updates > Applications available)
Nokia Store (search for Nokia Maps Suite 2.0)
When installing via SW Update menu or from Nokia Store, it is recommended to use a Wi-Fi connection or a cellular connection with data plan because a large amount of data will be transferred during the installation. Note that the installation may take a while to complete.
After the installation you can launch the applications from the phone menu. You can add the application widgets also on the home screen (Map Apps, Places nearby).
Can Nokia Maps be used in offline mode to avoid data costs?
Maps can be used offline to avoid data charges, however the following will not be available in Offline Mode:
    View Satellite maps
    View Terrain maps
    Search the latest address/POI database
    Real-time Traffic and Safety updates
Share your status, photos and location to your Facebook profile (Maps 3.03 and later)
    Get Weather forecasts
See local event info from WCities (Maps 3.03 and later)
Access Lonely Planet city guides (Maps 3.03 and later)
Access the Michelin restaurant guide (Maps 3.03 and later)
Synchronize your locations with Nokia Maps on the internet
You can switch between Online and Offline mode by going to the Maps Settings and
    Select Internet or General
Select Connection or Go Online at Start-up
Please Note: Switching between Online and Offline mode in Maps will not prevent data charges through the user of Positioning settings such as AGPS and WiFi/Network positioning. These will need to be turned off in the Positioning Settings on your phone. Please see your phone manual for more information.
How do I know if there is an update available for the map data in Nokia Maps 3.x?
You can check if your device has the latest compatible Map data simply by connecting your device to a PC running Nokia Suite and selecting View > Go To > Maps.
If you are using Mac, download Map Loader for Mac and then check if there's an available update for Map data (applies only for Maps 3.04 and older, version 3.06 and later not supporting Map Loader for Mac).
With Maps 3.06 and later you can check the availability of map data updates and do the update over Wi-Fi (WLAN) connection by selecting:
Maps 3.06: Update > Check for updates.
Maps 3.08 and later: Map Loader > Check for updates.
How can I start Drive navigation in Maps 3.08 (and later)?
There is an icon for the Drive application available on your phone's home screen.
You can also start drive navigation from Maps:
    1. Search for the destination.
    2. Select the place on the map and its information area at the top of the screen.
    3. Select Navigate, and Drive here.

Sorry, I'd like to unresolve this. The workaround mentioned is not a solution.
I travel to loads of places by motorcycle, and going off the beaten track is wonderful. Since I upgraded My E6-00 and C7-00 to a Lumia 920, I'm back to allowing the SatNav (phone) to decide where I go. Boring dual carriageways and bypasses are now my natural habitat - bah humbug. Afterall, the phone is in my pocket (safe from weather), headphones in my helmet - I can't constantly look at a map. Having multiple 'favourites' and planning from one to the next isn't workable. Fair enough the Lumia 920 is usable with gloves on (major plus for a biker, come on you marketing people!) but I don't fancy re-routing all the time by the side of a road.
I'm also planning a charity cycle ride over 100s of miles this Summer, and while that can be done in BikeRouteToaster, Google Maps etc, there is no import function into 'HERE' that I can see. It's impossible to plan a route on the device itself. Yes it can route walker (I can't seem to get turn by turn working for that, but nevermind), public transport and car, I have an option to avoid motorways etc, but cycle route planning needs consideration for height metres, unpaved/paved roads (Google StreetView etc used a lot to find a Sustrans route is actually unfit for road bikes) etc. So.. Importing a route planned elsewhere (gpx, kml or something) would be a real alternative, or a workaround. Asking the device to do its own planning from one point to another really isn't workable.
Please make the Nokia's USP an actual USP again?

  • Suddenly the Start-Up Disk is filling on it's own...what?

PB 1 Ghz Ti OS 10.4.6 experienced user, HD partioned into section for startup containing system and apps, using CS2 a lot.
Just in the last 24 hours my start drive has started to fill up - almost 4 gigs - yet I can't find any obvious files, caches, or temp docs to blame. Plus it is totaly new behavior. This morning I trashed a gig of unused apps off it and after an hour of Photoshop and websurfing I got the "start-up is almost full" warning and on restart I only have 400 megs -- not the gig left.
Of course I have Photoshop's scratch set to different discs, and this is new behavior. I did just update to 10.4.6 but geez? It is a fricking mystery.
Any ideas? Before I reformat and reinstall clean... Thanks

Hi, Petronio, and welcome to Apple Discussions. You should have at least 5GB of free space on your startup partition at all times. The OS needs that space for its swapfiles. Without it, you will see anomalous behavior and unstable operation. Make sure your boot partition is large enough so you can always keep 5GB free on it.
It may even be that the less free space there is, the faster the OS fills the rest of it up. Then if you're forced to restart for lack of space, the OS may not be able to do its usual housekeeping before shutdown, which includes deleting no-longer-needed swapfiles. So after you restart, all that stuff is still taking up disk space. Caution: this paragraph is just guesswork on my part; I don't know it to be true.
In case it is, you should probably run the OS's regular daily, weekly and monthly maintenance tasks manually, use Disk Utility to Repair Disk and Repair Permissions, empty your browser caches, and run any housekeeping and maintenance functions that may be built into other applications you use regularly. These tasks should free up some space on your drive, and allow you to see whether or not you need to move or dispose of more stuff to reach the target of 5GB of free space.

  • MacBook Pro not starting up......

    Hi,
My husband has recently bought a new MacBook Pro which was working fine until one day he went to turn it on and it does nothing but some up with a blue screen, the apple sign and then after a while a small circle with a line through it comes up (similar to a stop sign) and it does nothing else.
Does anyone know what could be wrong with it? He hadn't done any installing or updates and said it was absolutely fine before it stopped working.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and where possible, a clean install avoided!!!
    Many Thanks
    Sleepy

it basically sounds like its just not recognizing the HD as the start up disk. can be a simple as some how the setting for it got messed up or as worse as the HD is corrupt.
along with the other suggestions (if those dont work or you have issues) try to boot with another machine using that HD as its start drive (use target disk mode on that, start it while holding T) and if that doesnt work you can probably expect the HD has some issue but you can still possibly access the info on it while using it it target disk mode to at least copy off the info to save it. i am actually waiting for a friend to get me an external drive so i can do that for her, her machine isnt not booting but might as well not be and you cant boot of her drive but i can at least access it

  • External drive reverts to read-only on reboot

My 2TB firewire drive becomes a read-only drive after a computer reboot.  From a cold start, drives boots to read-write.  How do I fix this?

    Nicky McCatty wrote:
Earlier this morning my external drive, a Western Digital Firewire 800 1TB, was behaving normally. I shut my MacBook Pro down, and took it out for two hours. When I returned, Time Machine reported that my drive appeared to be read-only. I see that BOTH of my external Firewires now show up as read-only.
What causes this to happen, and what can I do about this problem?
A number of things. Most common is probably a power loss; second is probably disconnecting without first ejecting.
It's not permissions; try running +*Repair Disk+* on them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • N9 "Drive" always asks for a data connection

    Dear all,
New to my N9, I do love it! But is this normal the "Drive" applications doesn't work without a data connection?
Pretty annoying, even if the full map is loaded in the flash, Drive doesn't event start without data link.
    Thanks for the help.
    Solved!

    @romut
Sorry for any misunderstanding here, if you go to "Settings" > Device > GPS & positioning - do you have the same settings as screenshot?
I get the grey shaded circle on starting "Drive" which disappears once location established.

  • SB X-Fi Driver Installation Problem (X-Fi does not install on Asus A8N-VM CSM

    Dear forum members,
I want to install Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme on my Windows XP x64 Professional computer, but i am not able to succesfully finish 64bit X-Fi driver installation. Whether i use newer x64bit X-Fi beta driver or older official x64bit X-Fi driver, the installation of the driver stops at the end of the installation, when "CTDVINST.DLL" file is being installed and MY COMPUTER REBOOTS instantly. After the reboot, i am being asked to install Soundblaster X-Fi driver again and again. So all the X-Fi software installs well, but when i want to upgrade to x64bit drivers downloaded from Creative web site, the installation process reboots my computer right at the end of it, when "CTDVINST.DLL" file (it seems to be the last file in the driver package) is mentioned.
Help me please solve this problem, so that i can use my new Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme on my computer soon.
    Thank you very much.

    - new Windows installation did not help,
    - it is not caused by x64bit operating system, beacuse it did not install neither on Win XP 32bit
    - i tryed both driver updates (2 and 3) on both operating systems
    - i tryed to start driver installation from X-FI Driver\Drivers\Support\ctzapxx.exe, no change at all
    - i tryed to uninstall previous driver first through ctzapxx.exe as well
    - i tryed to install the driver on fresh installation of both Windows XP x64bit and x32bit
driver installation reboots the computer just a percent before it should finish, allways, no matter how i try to install the driver
i have heard about Creative sending to some owners of nForce430 motherboards new version of Sb X-Fi, which works with nForce430, is it true?Message Edited by misadlouhy on 06-3-2006 05:23 AMMessage Edited by misadlouhy on 06-3-2006 05:24 AM

  • Kbfiltr driver in sleep mode win8

    Hi
I have developed keyboard driver using WDK kbfiltr sample from msdn
But I have stuck in place ie In one of my client having asus laptop with windows 8 But when he keeps laptop in sleep mode
after waking from sleep mode kbfiltr.sys stop responding . Is there any way to wake up driver
I want to ask one thing that Now when ever i create driver service (that uses kbfiltr.sys) i need to restart the system but is there any way to start driver service without restart.

you can restart the driver by restarting the device itself. Disable/enable is the easiest route. You need to debug the driver on the Asus laptop where it hangs. The driver will see power up requests so the hang will be in the processing/power up in the
