Click the resize button on the Start menu (top right, the one with the 4
arrows).

  • Windows Insider Preview Start Menu Not Working: Build 10061

I've been using the Desktop tech preview for some time now. It seemed that with each build, the apps would bleed outside the window frame without scrollbars, ergo, making the apps not useable(except for browser). Then, starting with 10041 the start menu
wouldn't work. There is no way for me to open it except through the notifications button. Now with build 10061, none of the buttons work. Only firefox, which I have added to my taskbar. Although, edge nor IE will open either. So ATM, only the task manager,
firefox, folder button, and the volume control button seem to open/work. I have tried restarting and switching profiles, bu nothing seems to work.
I want to get away from win10. Before, on start up it would ask me if I wanted to revert back to win8. Now it doesn't ask anymore. How do I get back to win8?

To go back to Win8, you need a recovery media or an installation media for Win8.
Did you make one of those before you installed Win 10 TP over Win 8 ?
May I interest you to give Win 10 TP another go ?
ON the 29th, a new build has been released. It's build 10074.
You can install it via Windows Update or downloading the ISO which is also released at the same date.
My suggestion is to download the ISO > burn it to a bootable DVD or an USB with at least 4 GB > use the bootable media to do a Clean Install.
I suggest a clean install to make sure your new install will not "inherit" any "baggage".
In short, you will start fresh.
    Here is the download link for Pro (non-Enterprise) ISO;

Notice that it has a new product key :6P99N-YF42M-TPGBG-9VMJP-YKHCF
You shouldn't need it. But, just in case it asks for it.

  • Start menu all programs disappeared

The all programs selection in the start menu disappeared in build 10041. How come?

All Apps disappeared. That is why I have a problem.
    Just my speculations .......
Is the Start Screen expanded ?
If yes, UN-expand it. It could be that the transparency feature has obscured the "All apps" option.
Could it be that you have a small screen that you need to use the scrollbar to see everything ?
    Thank you.

  • [Forum FAQ]Start Menu Scroll Issue in Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926

    Scenario:
When upgrading to Window 10 Technical Preview Build 9926 from Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9879, you may notice that on the start menu, when you move mouse to the right side, it won’t scroll until you click it.
    Solution:
This is because the value of the key DWORD
    MouseWheelRouting which is under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop values changed to 0 after upgrade.
    Note:
Before you make changes to a registry key or subkey, we recommend that you export, or make a backup copy, of the key or subkey.
Press Windows logo key +R to open Run, type
regedit, and then press Enter to open Registry Editor.
Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.
On the right side, change the value of the DWORD MouseWheelRouting
to non-0 and non-1, for example 2, 3, which is set to 1 by default.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Sign out and sign back.
    Applies to:
Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926 upgrade version.

    same issue in build 10049.
It would help to be more specific in the symptom description.  E.g. using Narrator may help.  (Win-Enter).  Does it say what you are "seeing" (or should be seeing)?
FWIW I think it is relatively easy to reproduce symptoms which are related to this thread's description using Narrator (Start Screen without Search bar, Search bar without Taskbar, or Search bar with Taskbar but without Start Menu
when the only time that the Search bar should appear is when the Start Menu is there, for example) so that could also help specify what your real symptom is.  BTW there are horrendous delays when using Narrator.

  • Start menu in build 9879 compared to build 9926

Hi! I liked the Start menu in build 9879 better than the one in 9926. I found a registry hack to go back to the 9879 Start menu layout, but if possible I would like an option right there in the settings for the Start menu.
Other than that, I love the 9926 build. Go, Microsoft, go! Go Seahawks!
    Kjell Jarmlinger

I spent some time with build 9879 getting the start menu the way I wanted it. Updating to 9926 made a mess of it, with no apparent UI options to get back. I prefer being able to adjust the UI to my liking. If I wanted to simply accept whatever
the developer likes, I'd become an Apple customer.

  • Windows 10 Start menu cannot be resized

The start menu can no longer be resized and it only looks weird when removing/uninstalling all the tiles. This was optional in the earlier developer preview and should remain optional. This may or may not be the wrong channel to submit this feedback but
I accidentally uninstalled the Windows Feedback app and could not revert.
Windows 10 will not be any better until the start menu is back to the same function as < Win8. Why not just do a modern implementation of the start menu without rebuilding its concept?

I don't think this forum will allow anyone posting method(s) of reverting "expandable" Start Menu of build 9926 back to "resizable" Start Menu of build 9879.
Google for it. It's out there.

  • Start Menu in Windows 10 Build 10041 not working

20 minutes after the installation everything was fine and the start menu was working well. It has stopped all of a sudden now. Pressing start button as well now simply highlights the search bar and I have to rely on it to open all my apps. If anyone is facing
    any similar problem, please help.
    Thanks.

Oh my, well, you're very welcome, my pleasure.
A lot of Folks have been glad of this one.
Many of us began Build 9926 w/ its native rendition of the Start menu.  Obviously, it was not liked.  All feelings & observations about it being conveyed via Feedback.  So, now and for the moment, we can use something more appealing...
and we'll see what the next Build brings for a Start Menu.  Hopefully it will be likable.  By now, likely the Build Team knows / has heard the Start menu needs to be reworked.  Just polish & enhance the one we had before 9926, keeping
    the good parts.

  • Can't open start menu or search on build 10061

This seems to happen after each build update, and it is usually fixed by the app-cache repair
    Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + “\appxmetadata\appxbundlemanifest.xml”)}
However that isn't working this time.
In event viewer I'm seeing these type of errors appear each time I try to open the start menu
"Activation of app Microsoft.Cortana_8wekyb3d8bbwe!CortanaUI failed with error: The operation was blocked by parental controls. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information."
    and
"Unable to start a DCOM Server: CortanaUI as Unavailable/Unavailable. The error: "346" Happened while starting this command:
    "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Cortana_1.4.3.156_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\SearchUI.exe" -ServerName:CortanaUI.AppXwbw90g5vtrwjvhq9gjet3rhd0cy7ctte.mca"
I do use family safety, however the account I am logged on with is a local admin and is a parent account that is not monitored by family safety.
Another example, if I try to launch the Spartan browser, it flashes up briefly then closes. The TwinUI/Operational log give the "blocked by parental controls" error, followed by an Informational entry saying
"Activation of app Microsoft.Windows.Spartan_cw5n1h2txyewy!Microsoft.Spartan.Spartan attempted. Execution state: Attempted activation of the app, 7, The operation completed successfully.."
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

Unfortunately, this happens in spells when someone has never used family safety. Nuking from space (refreshing PC) is not the answer I'm seeking, that's for sure. I bet this one will be patched, or just made obsolete, by the expected new build around mid-week.
Update: In my case, which is the non-parental-control-caused version of this, it sure looks like it's tied to RAM usage, explaining the seeming randomness of it for me. Through trial and error, I've found that when hitting RAM usage
slightly higher than 70% (according to Task Manager's figure), the flakiness begins with all things Metro (Start itself, any Metro apps within Start, even the functionality of the clock on the tray) disappear about 1 second after being clicked. So, the workaround
for now is to keep RAM usage down. Due to RAM leakage over time, this means rebooting more than you otherwise might want.
Update 2: I think it's at least exacerbated by, if not caused by, not having a dedicated graphics card on the above system, which uses only Intel's onboard HD Graphics 3000. I say this because on a basically identical system--which in terms
of hardware is only different by the addition of a 1GB AMD graphics card--I'm unable to reproduce the problem.  Both systems are Core i5-2500 with 8GB RAM.

  • Build 10061 - Start Menu not opening programs other than Modern UI applications

When I attempt to open a program via the start menu absolutely nothing happens, unless I am attempting to open a Modern UI app.  I've tried deleting the shortcut and "re-pinning" it to the start menu and it still does not work.  Any
    ideas?

Assuming you are using build 10061.
Will it work if you right click at the program shortcut > select Run As Admin ?
    excerpt from Insider Hub:
Here are some known issues for this build
We know this one will be a bit painful but there is a bug with this build in which Win32 (desktop) apps won’t launch from the Start menu. The workaround is to use search to find and launch these apps and pin them to your taskbar for quick access.

  • Windows 10 Build 10041 start menu not working

I have installed the Windows 10 Build 10041 update yesterday. But since then I can’t leave my computer till it sleep automatically. Otherwise my computer will complete died and I need to press the power bottom to restart Windows.
But at that time, the Wndows start menu is still working.
However, this morning I find that my computer start menu is not working, and the search bar, Windows key, notice board icon at right side and internet icon is also not working.  I have use the control panel to check the problem but
it could not find any faults.

    Hi,
What's the type of your current user account? Built-in Administrator account or others?
Generally speaking, you can try to create a new user account to fix this problem. If no use, please try to use system restore to revert your system to a former normal time point for test.

    Seems everything else is fine.
But I cant click the search box it just marks the Search the web and Windows  but wont allow me to type anything.
And the same for the start menu if I click the windows icon in lower left corner nothing happens.
    Please someone help

    Hi,
Generally speaking, this problem can be caused by system store componments lost or corrupt. Dism command below should be helpful to resolve this problem:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    Roger Lu
    TechNet Community Support
SFC /scannow & DISM are broken in 9926 they do not normally complete making things e en more difficult to diagnose.

  • No Start Menu, removed and added User Account then no "Built In" Apps - Build 1049

So quick history, was having problem with start menu not working under build 1044 for the second user I'd added to the machine (Microsoft account). Rebuilt using "Remove everything and reinstall windows". Seemed to resolve the problem for the newly
added user and was still working under the original user (also Microsoft Account).  Then along came build 1049 and now the same start menu issue occurred for the original user account.  So, as both were setup as admins, removed the original
user account, restarted, checked all data removed and added the account again.
First attempt added the account as a local account then added the Microsoft account after login, result = start menu working but no "built in" apps (store beta, insider app etc).
So removed account again and added again, this time using Microsoft account immediately, logged in and exactly the same result.
    Any ideas how to resolve?

You cannot use the Start Menu logging in as anything that would be in the BUILTIN\administrator group on the computer.  I had the same problem when I added the machine to a domain, thus domain admins is in the BUILTIN\Administrator group.
The reason being that the Windows 10 Start Menu is an appxpackage, and you can't run appxpackages using the built-in administrator account.  As is the case for example with Windows Store.  It doesn't however give you a warning message, you
just click on the windows button and nothing happens.
This is just total madness imv.  It kind of made sense when all the appxpackages where apps, but now they include parts of the OS, the OS is essentially non-functional when you log in using anything in the BUILTIN\ administrator group.
If you really want to blow your mind, go into PowerShell and run the command: get-appxpackage|remove-appxpackage
If you run that on Windows 8.1 it will remove all the bloatware apps for the logged on user.  Run it in Windows 10 and it removes various parts of the OS for that user as well, such as the Start Menu!

  • Windows 10 Start menu not work in build 10049, restart take logn time

Same for me, I've started with win 8.1 updated to 10042, then to 10049. Menu start isnt working, and reboots take like 20 mins. Any fix?

    Hi,
For Start Menu, please re-register it and test if it can make any difference, In the administrative
Windows PowerShell window, type the following command and hit Enter key:
    Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + “\appxmetadata\appxbundlemanifest.xml”)}
Or I recommend you test whether this issue happens in another user account.
For the long reboot time, I recommend you keep latest Windows updates and drivers for all deivces, do sysytem maintance to improve the system performance, such as disk clean up, disable startup programs to decrease the reboot time, test whether issue persists.
    Regards
