Start my Macbook Pro without opening it

I now use my 23inch external display when working on my MBP at home. I would like to startup my MBP without opening the lid, starting it, and then closing it to rewake it. Is this possible?

Yes this is possible.
Tapping keys on a connected keyboard or mouse should wake the macbook from its suspended state so long as the screen and external power are attached.
The same works for bluetooth keyboards and mice, but you also need to make sure that you have checked the "Allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer" option in System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Bluetooth.

  • Starting a MacBook Pro without opening the case

I am using a docking station and an external monitor. Can I start my MBP without opening the case to push the button?

Thanks, I have been doing this. My problem is that after some days I feel I should shut down and then it requires a start. I am currently removing the MBP from the dock and starting it. I then put it in clam shell mode and put it in the dock. It can take quite a few goes to reactivate the conncetion to the monitor and I am trying to short circuit this problem. I have not been able to find a way to do this. When I used to use PC laptops with a docking station, the keyboard and the docking station had start buttons after a shut down. I have now returned to Macs after quite a few years and this has been my only problem.

I'm confused.  Are you saying that your mac came with an older version of OS X, but you want to be able to use OS X Lion, which you downloaded from the App store?  If this is not the case, what do you mean by "I downloaded os x but my laptop started off with os x lion and i want os x lion back"?  Specifically, what do you mean by "I downloaded OS X" if your mac came with Lion?

  • Can you install Windows 8.1 Pro using Parallels on a new MacBook Pro without retina display?

I am starting a graduate school program and I would like to purchase a MacBook Pro. The options for the non-retina display fit my needs best, but it sounds like the resolution requirements for Windows 8.1 Pro do not match the MacBook Pro without retina. I need Windows to run a statistics program (SAS) and ArcGIS for mapping. Any thoughts or experience installing Windows 8.1 Pro on MBP without retina?

The native res on my 13-inch non-Retina is 1280x800. You might check with Parallels support or their forums to see if this is a problem.
If you go with the non-Retina 13-inch, I'd recommend getting 8GB RAM (standard is 4GB) because Win emulators need a fair bit of memory.

  • I just brought Macbook pro(without retina display) on 15 june 2013 and since then put it on 6-7 hours of charging but still my macbook pro is not 100% charged. but why? (green light is displayed on the adapter pin)

i just brought Macbook pro(without retina display) on 15 june 2013 and when i switched it on the battery was 72 % charged and now the battery is charged to 62%, i used the charger that came with it and kept it for 6-7 hours on charging but it is not charged to 100% but why? also the green light is always on when i plug the charger with my mac book pro. Please tell me the meaning of Green light on power cord lid (mac book pro not charging or charging?) and also the other light if there like amber or any other colour.

    Hello Shailendras33,
Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro!  Thank you for providing all the information about what is going on with the charging issue.
Firstly, I found some information on page 11 of the MacBook Pro User Guide about what each color of the LED means on the Power Adapter:
When you first connect your power adapter to your MacBook Pro, an indicator light on the
MagSafe connector starts to glow.  An amber light indicates the battery is charging.  A green light indicates that the battery is fully charged.
You can find the MacBook Pro User Guide here (this is not for the latest MacBook Pro, but the information about the MagSafe adapter is true for the newest model):
    MacBook Pro User Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/macbook_pro_15inch_late_2011.pdf
It sounds like you are not getting the amber light indicating your computer is charging, and you are noticing that the battery level is depleting.  I recommend resetting your System Management Controller when something like this is occurring:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find the full article here:

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

If you aren't going to live that long maybe you should give up with computers and start enjoying the few remaining hours.

  • Set up a new macbook pro without using voice over

How do I set up a new MacBook Pro without using Voice Over. I can't get past the initial Welcome screen. The VO commands do not work as indicated in the forced tutorial.

Just click the Next and or Continue button. Voice over only starts shortly after you get to one of those screens and you wait to long to input something or click on an option and then Next or Continue. I think at the bottom of the screen there is an option to turn off the Voice over.

Your issue may not have anything to do with your files, it could be a corrupted cache file, reinstalling your OS and files from backup could be overkill and too much work.
Run ALL of the free OnyX's checks, cleaning and maintainence aspects (not the log files) and reboot at the end.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Your machine will act a bit slow until the caches and spotlight are rebuilt, but it should act faster
Your next step is to use OnyX Verify Preferences and "show only corrupt plist" files
If you find some, make a note of their location and remove then to your desktop and reboot and start the programs responsible, reset your preferences.

Terms of use forbid us from discussing Apple policy.    Obviously Apple has made some decisions regarding which GPU they believe will sell best.   http://www.apple.com/feedback/ is where you can offer your suggestions.
As for game capability, I've always found that high end games, when they say a specific GPU they mean they will only accept that GPU and no subsitutes.   I would contact the game developer to enquire if they have tested the game on that machine, or check the Mac gaming community links on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macgamepages.html
A few game developers are smart enough to offer a software emulator mode of the GPU that isn't too slow for machines that lack a specific GPU.  Ages ago, John Madden 2000 did that on Mac OS 9.  Only that emulator failed miserably when running in the Classic environment within Mac OS X.  But it does say that a smart enough developer can make a GPU independent game software that will still play back video in good speeds.   Sometimes they depend on other video codecs that are GPU dependent.    Silverlight for instance from Microsoft has had to keep up with Mac OS X to run Netflix streaming steady.   When you don't update it, problems start happening.  Adobe Flash, also needs to keep up too.   I wouldn't be surprised if the Steam software engine has also run into issues when not coded properly for a specific operating system.  So before you update, make sure the game has been tested with the update in question.

  • How can I sync my iPhone 4 with a new MacBook Pro without losing all my data and settings?

I used to sync my iPhone 4 with a PC running Windows XP until the hard drive died. Thankfully, I already had a backup of all my iTunes media (Songs, TV Shows, Movies, Podcasts, Apps, etc), so when I bought a new MacBook Pro, transferring my iTunes library was easy.
My problem now is that I want to sync my iPhone 4 with my new MacBook Pro without losing all the data and settings. I have already used iTunes to back it up and transfered my purchases onto the mac. I just need help to sync the iPhone with the Mac without losing app data, emails, contacts, settings.
Everytime I click on the tabs (to sync contacts, apps, music, et al), I get an error message that reads:
"Are you sure you want to sync apps? All existing apps and their data on the iPhone “Ryan's iPhone” will be replaced with apps from this iTunes library."
What do I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

  • I have many of those lost photos on my iPod.  How can I import those to my MacBook Pro without the iTunes synchronization kicking in and removing them?

I lost rather a lot of photos on a corrupted external storage device.  I have many of those photos on my iPod.  How can I import those
photos into my MacBook Pro without the iTunes synchronization function kicking in and effectively deleting those photos I want to
import from that iPod?  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as those photos now only reside on that iPod...

The photos you synced to your iPod through iTunes are no longer in their full resolution, but instead are scaled down thumbnails of those photos.  So if you do manage to get them off your iPod, they will be quite small in size compared to the original ones you lost.
In order to get them off of your iPod, you'll need the help of some sort of 3rd party software. Here is one option.
