Start numbers at 0001 when renaming files

Up until upgrading to Yosemite I was able to select a bunch of files, right click to get the menu pulldown and hit Rename to get a more comprehemsive Rename options window.
I could, for example, rename the Name and Index and choose a zero in the Numbers Start data entry field. Now I am forced to start at 1 which is useless because you end up with:
12345_123_1.jpg
12345_123_2.jpg
12345_123_3.jpg
12345_123_4.jpg
12345_123_5.jpg
12345_123_6.jpg
12345_123_7.jpg
12345_123_8.jpg
12345_123_9.jpg
12345_123_10.jpg
12345_123_11.jpg
Instead of:
12345_123_01.jpg
12345_123_02.jpg
12345_123_03.jpg
12345_123_04.jpg
12345_123_05.jpg
12345_123_06.jpg
12345_123_07.jpg
12345_123_08.jpg
12345_123_09.jpg
12345_123_10.jpg
12345_123_11.jpg
Which is infinitely more cool. Come on Apple - wake up!

That’s what your subject asked for.
If that’s not what you want, make an Automator Service that renames them. Looks something like this:

  • Key repeat issues when renaming files

I am having trouble with the cursor arrow key repeating when renaming files. When I press and hold the left or right arrows while renaming in Cover Flow view, it starts scrolling through the files instead of moving the cursor through the filename.
This also seems to happen when renaming files on an attached USB device. Instead of moving the cursor it moves the file selection bar after a few cursor repeat actions.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there a fix?

This has been bugging me too. I noticed it right back when Leopard was still 10.5.0 and thought they would have at least acknowledged it by now. In coverflow view, the files scroll across the covers, in list mode the folder tree collapses if you hold the left arrow key. And another annoying thing Leopard does is that when you're renaming, if any file in that folder changes, it abandons the rename instead of continuing, making your keystrokes move up and down the list of files without warning.

  • MD5 Checksum Changes When Renaming Files in Bridge?

Just like the title says: MD5 checksum seems to be changing when renaming files in Bridge
Is this normal? Is there anyway to disable this? Checksums do not seem to change when renaming a file outside of Bridge (ie; in Windows Explorer or Mac Finder).
    Ken
    P.S. System is Windows 7 using Bridge CS6 (64bit)

Thanks for the quick reply Curt.
Until you just now asked the question, I could not explain why it should not change. Now, if I understand correctly after googling around a bit, it appears the hash can be computed either with or without the filename (among other things).
Apparently Bridge computes the hash including the filename. It seems there is an option to compute the hash based only on the file contents (ie; without the filename). My assumption was that by default, the checksum was generated using only the files contents (ie; without the filename).
I'm hoping someone can comment definitively on how Adobe Bridge does it and whether or not there's a way to change it.

  • Unable to use reverse geocoding when renaming files

I've asked about this on different discussion boards but no answer so far. The first versions of Lightroom that came with reverse geocoding did not have this problem. But somehow after an update in Lightroom 4 the Google reverse geocoded location fields cannot be used to rename files. This was very convenient for me to export images to people as a landscape photographer working in many places and making it easy for others to locate the place via the filename.
Is this a bug or a Google rights thing? And is there a way to make reverse geocoded metadata permanent (not in gray and italics?) because when I overtype the place myself it does work.
Example below: note that the fields {Country} and {City} or not added to the file name, even though they are in the metadata field.

Don't use realtive paths, at least not without making them absolute yourself.
Java gives you the ability to figure out the path from which the executing program was loaded. Use that, together with your relative path, to construct an absolute path.

  • Bridge freezes when renaming files

When I rename certain files or folders, Bridge freezes on this message:
Updating the cache for items within the folder recursively...
It doesn't happen with all files or folders, but I haven't been able to determine a pattern. I've also had issues with the previews associated with some files (I just get a gray box), so I'm thinking it's obviously a cache issue. I've cleared the cache multiple times with no success. Any ideas?
I'm running OSX 10.6.7 (which brought with it lovely bug in PDFs with PostScript-flavored OpenType fonts), which might be an issue. I'm also using Dropbox 0.7.110, with three other users...there are a whole lot of files in Dropbox that constantly update, so I can see how that might affect it to.

The players:   Photoshop, Bridge, Dropbox, Time Machine, Spotlight, Finder
    Photoshop
creates a temp file, writes to the temp file, and renames the temp to
replace the original file, plus gets stat on the files.
Bridge only reads the file, and writes to it's database.
Finder gets attributes on the file in the normal folders.
    Dropbox
gets stat on the files from 2 different processes (Dropbox,
dbfseventsd), even outside it's directory, even in temporary
    directories.
Spotlight (mdworker, mds) gets stat, and reads the
files, even in temporary directories, sometimes while the file is still
    being written.
Time Machine (backupd) gets stats, reads the files, and sometimes sets attributes on the files, even in temporary directories.
Photoshop, Bridge and Finder are acting as expected.
While Dropbox and Spotlight are doing some excess work, they don't seem to cause file modifications.
    But
Time Machine is doing things wrong and causing file modifications, plus
would fit with the "have the file open a long time" symptom.
    and
on my own system I've confirmed that Dropbox and dbfseventsd will get stats on files outside the Dropbox folder.
Dropbox has some bugs to fix.

I'm using custom renaming based on the color code, star rating i give a particular file.  I'd also like the filename to show if it's been flagged as a pick or rejected, etc.  Anyone know how to achieve that?

Are you talking about including a flag-text in the filename or only exporting/renaming the ones flagged?

  • Maintain RAW filename when renaming in Lightroom

When renaming files in Lightroom 1.2 when you are exporting files how do you keep the original RAW filename in Metadata? I cut DVDs of my files after they are downloaded and want to be able to tell what the original filename was before it was renamed in the event I'd have to go back to the Raw file.
I want to use name and a sequence number for the new filename [EX: rb-101, rb-102, etc. where rb is the clients initials followed by a sequence starting at 101]
The reason I want to rename in Lightroom is to keep the files in the order I manually place them since my cameras don't always sync capture time exactly. If I just export them without renaming, then I have to start over in Bridge to sort them again before renumbering in CS2.

Rob,<br /><br />Clicking F2 in Lightroom invokes the Filename Template Editor.<br /><br />One of the options is "Original Filename". That can be invoked at anytime so that should sort your query out.<br /><br />However, personally, I always like to have the original 4 number sequence tagged to every photo no matter what format the photo is.<br /><br />So, original camera filename of 73XX1234 becomes: "CLIENTNAME assignment 1234" <br /><br />Every version of the photograph will have this same name so can be searched inside or outside of Lightroom by a dozen different variables without even needing the Metadata.<br /><br />To set this up go to the Import dialogue and in the File naming Template area, click on Edit.<br /><br />My default setting is:  <Custom Text> <Filename suffix><br /><br />Click OK and then enter the text you want at the front of the filename.<br /><br />You can change the name at any stage by selecting pictures in the Library, clicking F2 (or Menu>Library>Rename) to invoke the Filename Template Editor and proceed as above. <br /><br />Cheers,<br />Adrian

  • MAC to Windows Server2008 share renaming files leaving 0 byte original

    Hi all
We are experiencing a weird issue on our Design studio MACS that are connected to a Windows Server 2008 R2 file server.
When renaming files, it is leaving behind the original file at 0 bytes, these are generally image files PSDs, Jpgs etc
It is also intermittently taking a long time when typing the characters and trying to save the change back to the server.
Has anybody experienced something like this or knows where to start in finding solution?

  • How can I rename files when importing?

Is there a way to rename files when importing them? Every method I've tried retains the original file name the camera assigns (e.g. DSC_0001). I'd like the ability to rename the files automatically either with a date or event name with sequential numbering following.
    Thanks!

First you will have to upload from the camera to a folder on the Desktop where you can batch rename them before importing into iPhoto. That's a safer workflow IMO because you can make sure the photos are safely on the hard drive before starting any other operation.

I have attempted to modify another sript I found here to no avail.

set theNameOfFolder to name of folder theFolder

set text item delimiters to "_"
return (text item 2 of theFile)
set text item delimiters to ""
    end grabSuffixOfFile

Normally it is a bad idea to do things with items that are in the attached folder (earlier OS versions will retrigger folder actions when an item is renamed, for example), and you don't need to use a Get Selected Finder Items action since the dropped items are already passed to your workflow (also note that the input items will be a list).
It looks like you are trying to use multiple passes to add on the folder names, but you will have less of a headache if you build the base name and just deal with the number suffix.  If I understood your naming scheme correctly, the following script should do the trick - it isn't very fast, but should be OK for a few items at a time.
on run {input, parameters} -- rename input Finder items (aliases) to name of containing folders
set divider to "_" -- the divider character between name pieces
set output to {} -- the result to pass on to the next action
set counter to "01" -- start suffix at one
repeat with anItem in the input -- step through each item in the input
set anItem to contents of anItem -- dereference
tell application "Finder" to if class of item anItem is document file then -- don't mess with folders or applications
      set {itemParent, itemExtension} to {container, name extension} of anItem
if itemExtension is not "" then set itemExtension to "." & itemExtension
set grandParentName to name of container of itemParent
set parentName to name of itemParent
set newName to grandParentName & divider & parentName & divider & counter
      set documentNames to my getExistingNames(itemParent)
repeat while newName is in documentNames -- increment counter suffix as needed
                                            set counter to text -2 thru -1 of ("0" & (counter + 1))
set newName to grandParentName & divider & parentName & divider & counter
      end repeat
set name of anItem to (newName & itemExtension)
set end of output to anItem -- alias still refers to the same file even after renaming
      end if
      end repeat
      return the output
    end run
to getExistingNames(someFolder) -- get base document names (no extensions) from a folder
      set nameList to {}
tell application "Finder" to repeat with aFile in (get document files of someFolder)
      set {fileName, fileExtension} to {name, name extension} of aFile
if fileExtension is not "" then set fileExtension to "." & fileExtension
set fileName to text 1 thru -((count fileExtension) + 1) of fileName -- just the name part
set end of nameList to fileName
      end repeat
      return nameList

  • Cannot rename DC, "Cannot create a file when that file already exists."

    Hi,
A long time ago we used a domain controller named jacob.mydomain.lan.  It was removed, possibly in a 'dirty' way, and now we cannot re-use that name for another domain controller.  In the meantime we have upgraded to Win 2012 domain controllers
now, and when I enter this to rename:
    netdom computername ourdc.mydomain.lan /add:jacob.mydomain.lan
I get the error:  "Unable to add jacob.mydomain.lan as an alternate name for the computer.  The error is:  Cannot create a file when that file already exists."
    If I enter:
    netdom computername ourdc.mydomain.lan /remove:jacob.mydomain.lan
I get: "The command completed successfully", but it still refuses to add jacob.mydomain.lan
After each attempt to add a forward zone dns record 'jacob.ourdomain.lan' has been created.  I always erase this manually afterwards.
What is the problem? How can I search to find the offending 'file' named 'jacob'?
Thanks a lot for help on this.

A MacBook will use Time Machine to make local backups so that when connected to an external drive it will backup a lot faster.
to disable this, you must use a command under terminal.
to locate terminal, do a search for it under spotlight (the magnifying glass on the top right corner), should be the first hit.
once under terminal, type the following text exactly:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
    hit enter.
you will be asked to input your password, if you do not have a password, you will have to create one before performing this command. after entering your password, hit enter again and close terminal.
in a few minutes the space taken up by time machine should be cleared.
