Start/stop detect vs. manual in/out while capturing
Can anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages to one method over the other?
Erm . . .
Start / Stop detect.
FCP makes a new clip each time it detects the point where the camera started a new take.
Manual In / Out.
You decide where the clips start and stop, regardless of what the camera did.
Up to you to decide whether one will serve you best, really.

How to turn of "Automatic Start/Stop Detection for HDV Caputre
Hello,
I'm pulling my hair out trying to capture HDV 1080i-50 without getting separate clips created by the metadata at the start and stop of each shot. It's that feature called "Automatic Start/Stop Detection." I'm not talking about "Make new clip on timecode break."
How can I turn this Start/Stop thing off. I don't want all these **** clips everytime the cameraman hit the record button.
Anyone know how to turn it off so it stops making separate clips?
Thanks!
KirkYeah, Andy. It helps to have the manual!! THANKS. It says... Select or deselect "+Create new clip on Start/Stop+ checkbox in the Clip Settings Tab of the Log and Capture window."
It's strange that I was looking for that kind of a box in all the various settings but not in the log/capture window.

Problems with DV Start/Stop detect with XL1s
Hello,
As the topic eludes to, I capture footage with a Canon XL1s (which I hate more and more with each passing day). This footage is then input through a Firewire 400(mini) to 800. When I select the footage in FCE, and select DV Start/Stop detect, a moment passes (where a load bar calculates), but then a small info box says the following:
*This movie does not have any breaks in the time/date information. No markers were added.*
What's strange is that I've got another clip that does creates two subclips - however - there should be more along the lines of 80 subclips. In fact, all the clips I'm trying to use DV Start/Stop Detect on have anywhere from 50 to 150 shots in each...
Anyone know why FCE isn't detecting the start/stops, and - furthermore - if there is anything else I can utilize to accomplish this?
Thank you.Are you saying that because the clock settings were not set while recording, FCE cannot detect the DV >start/stops?
Yup.
You can add markers manually and then make sub-clips if you wish to break up a large clip .

Having Start/Stop detect to break up DV NTSC on import?
Having Start/Stop detect to break up DV NTSC on import?
is this posible it works when importing my HDV but when i down convert out of camera to DV anamorfic it makes one file. This might be what you want. After import of clip, select the clip in the browser go to Mark>Dv start/stop detect.
FCP will make your selected clip into a folder and inside will be the scene breaks.
Hope I understood your question. -
Capture Now with DV Start/Stop Detect maintaining Timecode
I am a new Mac user coming from Adobe Premiere Pro. In Pro, I could capture an entire tape into individual clips. I am now using FCE4, and have found the Capture Now option, as well as the DV Start/Stop Detect setting. The resulting segments show an In point based on the timecode of the tape. When I rename the file and move it to a different bin, I lose the timecode (in list view, in and out point state Not Set). Is there a way to maintain timecode to keep my shots in sequence?

DV Start/Stop detect with iMovie
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?forumID=936&threadID=557928
Because this thread was marked solved I can't add to it.
I think the problem is the rendering as you surmised. There is no way to fix this problem because of the way iMovie works. It captures without timecode so every clip begins at zero. Once you've rendered the material and moved it to the browser the render file looks to the TC on the clip to sync up. Once it's broken up every subclip starts with zero because it has no inherent timecode so the render file associated with zero TC links to every subclip.Hi Tom,
thanks for addressing that topic again (I had just marked it "solved" because it was open by a long time...).
I see what you mean: since there is no TC in the .dv from iMovie there is no way to sync the audio render file and the subclips. Another interpretation is that DV Start/Stop Detect applies only to the original .dv media, not to audio (item level) render file created in the timeline, so FCE cannot associate different sections of the audio render file to the corresponding subclips.
But now that I read it again... I think we are just saying the same thing!
And you are suggesting a feedback would be useless.
Thanks anyway

Sending FCP5 'DV Start/stop detected' subclips to shake...
Hi all, I wonder if any of you Shake users could help with a problem I'm experiencing....
I tend to import my DV footage into FCP5 by using the 'Capture Now' option to capture the entire tape from the cam, then use the 'Detect DV Start/Stop' function to mark the master clip, then make subclips from that. A fairly standard process.
Now, my problem is this:
When I send clips from the timeline to Shake, everything seems to work as it should, with Shake starting a script using my clips....only it's not the 'subclips' I sent that appear in Shake, it's always the beginning of the Master Clip that the subclips were derived from.....although Shake IS recognising the relevent timings from the subclips.
Example: If I send two subclips to Shake, one 60 frames long and one 120 frames long, Shake will open two 'file-in' nodes correctly but one will contain 60 frames from the START of the Master Clip and the other will contain 120 frames from the START of the Master Clip and NOT the frames of the subclips.
Bizarrely though, once the 'file-out' node has been rendered and linked back to FCP5, the clip Shake has created in the timeline DOES contain the correct frames from the subclips.
I've tried converting the subclips to master clips in FCP5 but this makes no difference, the same thing still happens.
Trying to analyse what's happening, I suspect the problem is with Shake not being able to recognise the 'markers' FCP5 is using to identify it's own subclips, but I'm not sure if there's a way to get round this. My own solution has been to export the clips out to the desktop, then import them manually into Shake. It works, but obviously adds extra processes to the workflow.
I hope this explanation makes sense to you all.
Regards.
Steve.

DV Start/Stop Detection Error
Hello - Why does one get this message?
"this movie does not have breaks in the time date information. no markers were added"
The source was DV Tape.If the time is not set on the camera then this feature will not work. Think of it like a VCR (remember those) that flashes "12:00" and then you set to record from 8-9. It doesn't know when 8-9 is because the time is not set.
I've seen the error you have and not having the time set was why it happened.
I hope this helps. -
Possible to Start/Stop Mark Clips In Timeline?
Hello,
I'm using FCP5 on a Dual 2.7 G5 running 10.4.2
I captured a couple of DV tapes, added a Time Code Generator, and gave the footage to a client on DVD so that they could create a list of shots to not include in the final edit.
I took this list and went through making cuts at the client's listed start and stop Time Codes. The problem I am having is some of the clips left on the timeline have camera start/stop points. I would like to mark these using "DV Start/Stop Detect" so that I could create new edit points between each start/stop of the camera.
I can double click each clip in the timeline... opening it in the viewer... and then select "Mark>DV Start/Stop Detect" and this does exactly what I want. It is very tedious though. Is there anyway to automate this process for each clip in the timeline. I hope I explained what I am trying to do clearly. If not please ask questions and I can fill in details.
Thank You,
MattThanks for the suggestion. Yes, it would have been alot smarter to run the Start/Stop Detection as my first step after capturing. I'm new to FCP, and my old NLE (Premiere Pro 1.5) would break the Camera Start/Stops into separate .avi files on the hard drive and in the project window / browser. I just didn't think about it this time... but definitely will next time.
What I ended up doing is using the track forward selection tool to select all the clips in the timeline that I wanted to mark. I created a new bin in the browser and put all of my clips in the timeline in this new bin (creating subclips?)
Then I selected all of these clips in the browser and ran the Start/Stop Detect tool. After it finished I sorted all the newly marked clips in my browser by their in points. I then selected all of my clips, dragging them back into the timeline. I put them on a new track so that I could make sure everything lined up correctly. It did. It ended up being a pretty simple fix. Just had to think about it a bit over dinner.
Thank You,
Matt -
DV Start/Stop issue with DVC Pro 50
Hey guys/ladies... I'm editing with Final Cut studio 2 (FCP 5) and i want to use the "DV Start/Stop Detect" feature. I'm capturing video with the DV50 NTSC 48KHz codec, however, when I try to use the DV Start/Stop Detect function, it gives me an error that reads "The clip you have selected does not reference a movie that can be analyzed". I've brought this video in via FireWire, and I see in the manual that it should work with DV, DVCPro, DVCPro 50, and DVCPro HD... The deck i'm using is the Panasonic AJ-SD93P (DVCPro 50), and the camera for aquisition is Panasonic AJ-SDX900P (DVCPro 50). What am I missing?
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9) 2x 3GHz Dual-Core Intel XeonAh! the operative word here is "may"... it's bad information I believe. The camera has to have a time of day code function recorded in the signal or it won't work... and only the consumer/prosumer level cameras have this feature. If you can't superimpose the time of day and date over the picture in the recording mode (like consumer cameras do) this isn't going to work.
FCP reads this code and when it detects a break in time (every time you pause would be when this happens) it can place the markers. But if the feature isn't on the camera, FCP can't read it. I've never read nor seen this work on anything but DV 25 recordings... and then only if the camera has the time of day capability.

24pA - Captured timecode and DV Start/Stop
Hello - I've got what I hope will be an easy one - though I haven't found the answers lurking around here. I'm capturing footage shot on my DVX-100A in 24p Advanced mode. I'm capturing it from my DSR-11 deck using the Advanced Pulldown Removal in FCP 5.0.3 on my Dual 1G G4 tower running OS 10.4.3. My tapes should all be Non-Dropframe I believe.
I'm having an issue with DV Start/Stop Detect. It's putting markers where there is no start/stop between clips, and NOT finding any of the start/stop locations on the tape at all. This led me to examine my timecode more closely. I found that clips have timecode that increments like this (in the frames category):
01, 02, 04, 05, 06, 07, 09, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29, 00
It plays fine in sequences set to 23.98, and even displays fine on an NTSC television I've hooked up to my DSR-11. This from the clip itself in the viewer, or from the canvas in the sequence.
Should my timecode be incrementing that way so that it can re-reference the 29.97 timecode on my original tapes, or do I have a problem? Does anybody know why my Start/Stop Detect feature won't work? Incidentally, it works just fine for 24p normal footage captured at 29.97.
Thanks for your help.
ZacZebulun -
I did what you suggested. I was able to capture a few clips just fine at 29.97. I also was able to use the dv start/stop detect feature with success.
However, using the "remove advanced pulldown" from the tools menu yielded the same odd results. It appeared to work just fine, and the info window for the clip says that the frame rate is 23.98 (with lower field dominance), but my time code still reads as it did from the above posting. Up to 29 frames, skipping frames to make it count only 24 times.
It still seems to play fine. Any thoughts on why my timecode is doing this? -
Is there a way to monitor the current time code during capture? I often capture entire tapes on the fly, but would like to take notes as I go and, of course, those notes would be more useful if I could jot down approximate tc.
Thanks,
MartinI'd still prefer a software based fix. Is there nothing within the app? < </div>
Don't think so. Capture is kind of a weird modal change for FCP. I just use the analog display from the dsr11's video out or make my selects with a preliminary run or do the ol' start-stop-detect subclip creation routine.
Might check the manual, though. I'd be happy to do that for you but I'm not at my FCP machine.

Start stop while loop with tab control
I want to be able to start and stop a while loop by entering and leaving a tab. I am using an event structure to do so but it doesn't seem elegant or the right way to do this. The only way I was able to get it to kind of work is by unchecking the lock front panel box in the event structure. I have attached a sample vi of what I have so far.
Solved!
Go to Solution.
Attachments:
Loop test.vi 16 KBThe problem is that you can't even stop the program by hitting the stop button until you leave the tab, which is not a friendly user interface.
Event structures should just handle basic user events. Any given event case should not take a long time to run. While you are in the diagnostics tab, your code is stuck in that while loop. Although fixing the lock front panel allows you to do other things, the LabVIEW is just queuing up all of those other UI events (like Stop button value change) and can't handle them until the inner while loop stops and allows the outer while loop to iterate again.
You should have a parallel while loop to handle the waveform graph. You can use notifiers or queues or an action engine FGV (see Ben's Action Engine Nugget) to pass the starting or stopping of the waveform graph update to the parallel while loop. -
