Start up app won't go away!

I've had my iBook G4 for about a year, and I've never had one iota of a problem until more recently. At my college we were required to have Sophos anti-virus (or something like that) on all personal computers connected to the network, so they provided the software free to all students. I downloaded the mac version from the general network and had it on my computer for the last 6 months on my laptop.
After I left college, I could no longer get the automatic virus updates because I wasn't connected to the network anymore. So I thought I'd just delete sophos from my laptop. I don't remember the specifics of what I did, but my current annoyance HAS to be linked to this - I'm convinced.
Every time I start up my computer, a little box pops up that says "InitProbTitle" and "Init Prob", the menu title reads "SophosUIServer". The icon for the box is the same for generic apps, it's not the Sophos icon. I always end up clicking OK - but I want to know why this keeps popping up, if it's a problem, and how can I make it stop?
I'm definitely not super computer savy, but I just want to get this app off my computer since I don't use it anymore. How can I make this go away? When I search spotlight, I have SEVERAL sophos folders, mostly because I tried to uninstall it by redownloading the app, but I think this may have added to the problem. Help!

Classic starts up, apps won't...

I used the Classic environment successfully fairly recently, and I don't recall any major changes to my system. But just yesterday my wife told me she couldn't get Word to start up. So I tried myself and nothing worked in either of our accounts.
I thought it might be Word/M$, but none of the Classic apps would work, they all hang and require a force quit to shut 'em down. Also when starting Classic itself from the Sys Pref panel, it has hung once and always acts oddly (SBBOD, slow behaviour etc). I tried reinstalling OS9 from the packaged disc, but it installed "OS9 System Support" , the disc (for the mini) says 'OS9 install". I also checked the server and startup folders as mentioned here, but they are empty.

does classic start up completely ? ie. can you start up a simple application like SimpleText ?
Or can you start Classic from the Advanced tab in the Classic System Pref with all extensions turned off ?
Can't remember if you're 10.3 or 10.4, but I seem to remember reading a lot of issues with classic under 10.4.1 and 10.4.2, resolved in 10.4.3. Although I bought Tiger at release, I've not installed it yet ( I'm in the middle, nearing the end thankfully, of upgrading from OS9 to 10.3. The OS upgrade was easy, upgrading and finding suitable replacements for older apps is a much harder task). So I can't provide a walkthrough.
Just humour me once, perform a Get Info on the Classic application. Does the Get Info report it as a 'Classic Application' ?

I'm trying to sync more music onto my iPhone but it just says "Waiting for sync to start" and it won't go away or start the sync.

I've tried multiple things but I just cannot get the sync to start!

At some stage is is likely to have been connected to another computer's iTunes. It is now linked to that computer's library and iPhones can only be associated to one library at a time. Linking to a different one requires wiping the phone.
If you used the phone with another computer you owned you can transfer the iTunes library from that computer to this one and the phone will still be syncing with the same library it was before.
If all there is on the phone are items which can be backed up to iTunes and purchases which can be transferred you could do that, then wipe the phone and sync them back.

Desktop/Start Menu Icons won't stay away...

Ok, here's my dilemma. I am very meticulous about my desktop Icons and my start menu organization... I keep a quick launch Icon for iTunes, but no start menu or desktop icons... however, since I've upgraded to iTunes 7, every time I restart iTunes it reinstalls the icon and the start menu folder, and I cannot find an option to disable said icons... it's REALLY annoying me, as was the (seemingly) corrected stuttering issue... this is really a disappointing new iTunes upgrade... I'm very surprised that apple would rush out such a shoddy product...I haven't tried syncing my iPod yet, I'm afraid to... I just hope that my new 80 gig will work fine once I get it...

OK, that seems to have done the trick. I had to play around with the grid spacing – there seems to be a setting somewhere just right of the middle of the scale that enables icons to be positioned almost at the L/H edge of the desktop.
Thanks for your help. One of those ultimately unimportant but nonetheless annoying little issues.

Try a reset on the device. This will have no affect on your data. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot.

Rosetta Stone app won't go away

I have deleted Rosetta Stone from my Satellite C650D (Windows 7, if that matters). When I run a virus scan, it takes over an hour to scan what it says are Rosetta Stone programs. What are these and how do I delete them for good?

Sometimes when you uninstall an application, the application's uninstaller only removes the application files themselves and not data made by the application. You might want to contact Rosetta Stone to see if they have more information about the files that might have been left.

Apps won't start after latest update?

Hello,
I'm on an older 2006 iMac (the one without the black border) and I installed the latest update last night. Now I can't get Firefox, Safari, Mail or apps working properly. When I try to start an app it bounces up and down and then I can't remember what it says but it won't start. Any ideas how to fix this? I'm thinking of downloading Firefox and Safari on my sister's computer and then transferring them via my memory stick.
I also tried a restart. Last night I just shut it down and walked away and figured I'd deal with it when I get home from work today.

Hi, first I hope you have your important stuff backed up!!?
I would & always do Repair Permissions Before & after Updates, so I would try the RP ..
Then I would go the SMC route, specific for your model..
If after that you still have "issues" You may need to go the Archive & Install route..

My name is Norbert. I am having some difficulties restoring my icloud back up. My ipad was doing an icloud back up and the alert message displayed on the ipad after my internet was interrupted "A wi-fi connection is required to download your apps and media".
I got the internet working, my ipad is receiving internet network but the alert message is still displayed on the ipad and won't go away, to make matters worse the ipad is frozen and i can't do anything.
Please can anyone with a similar experience tell me what to do in this situation?

Have you tried a hard restart. Press the on/off button and homescreen buttons together until the device shuts down.

I also had this problem. Go to settings> itunes & app store, tap on your apple ID and sign out. Then open itunes store. It should now open.
Then sign back in again and the problem should be resolved

Try close all inactive apps
1. Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking view
2. Swipe up on the screenshot of the app you want to exit.
3. The app will fly off the screen

An App That Won't Go Away?

This is a continuing problem from the "App won't stop downloading/installing" thread.
I used yellowpages app till it got stuck installing and nothing would stop it. I finally dumped the app but guess what? When I open market it is still there trying to install?! I thought I could re-install and delete again but, no luck there since its already trying to install. Jeezy creezy! Somebody make this thing go away!
And, if the only option is a reset, forget it.

OK this is what worked after the yellow pages app stuck on installing, was deleted and, continued trying to install and could not be stopped. I went to seetings>applications>manage apps>market>clear cache. Nothing else worked espescially this-

Preview.app won't start

I recently wiped my harddrive and did a clean install of Leopard. I've installed both updates. Everything seems to be working except:
When I try to start Preview.app the screen dims as if it's starting, then comes back, and the program doesn't start.
I've fixed permissions twice (a lengthy process the first time), deleted both Preview related preference files, logged on as a different user and yet continue to have the same problem.
What should I do now? Thanks.

Apparently, the clean install got corrupted and permeates throughout the installation. An A&I preserves user and network settings, so you don't have to go through the setup process or reinstall anything. What it does do is puts down another OS X, moving the old stuff to the Previous System folder. Rather than continue to try things, it's best to start afresh. Note, after doing the A&I, you'll need to update to 10.5.2 and I recommend you do that manually. Once you square everything away, I strongly suggest getting a bootable, external FireWire HD and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, Disk Utility, etc. to make a bootable backup/clone of your installation. Check it out, keep it current, and when things get wonky, erase the wonky one and restore the backup/clone.
