Start-up apps question

 Hello guys, I want to make my Y50 as fast as possible and I was wondering which of the following start up applications are okay to disable, thanks in advance

My rule of thumb is that anything you installed after getting the computer can be turned off. As for the software that came with the computer, just do a Google. Find out what the software does, and decide if you need it. By definition all startup apps can be stopped. But you may want that functionality. For instance it does not make sense in turning off your Antivirus scanner so it should be left turned on. The rest is a personal decision.

  • How can I start an app on OSX Mavericks without switching to it?

    What's up to all my Appleheads!
         I usually do my research (extensively if I'm particularly annoyed) regarding any of my Apple questions, but  I can't seem to find an answer to the following:
         Let's say I'm working in a full screen app (e.g. - Safari) window/space and I bring up spotlight/dock/launchpad to initiate/open/start an app, how can I prevent Mavericks from automatically "pulling" me to the designated window where the app is loading? I would like to be able to continue working on whatever it is I'm working on while at the same time have my app of choice start up in the "background" without being brought to it while it's still starting up. I know I'm not the only person that finds this behavior annoying, as I've seen it phrased a number of ways, but this question in particular hasn't been addressed (that I can find).
    A little info:
    Early 2011 13" MBP
    8gb RAM
    500gb HDD
    OSX 10.9.4
    P.S. I've already tried the 'When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for that application' within Mission Control settings. This does not yield the result I am searching for.

  • Ssh X11 forwarding takes too long to start any app. remotely

    Hi,
    I have a bizzare problem with %subject% for some time already.
    Affected are all my Arch linux installations (all with: systemd, openbox (without Display Manager), and latest updates):
    1. home desktop (core 2 duo, 2.4GHz, 3GB RAM).
    2. one testing desktop in virtualbox on the desktop from prev. point.
    3. work laptop (Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM).
    All of these are connected via cable to the same home network 100MB router (using openwrt on asus wl-500g).
    Normal ssh transmissions, like entering commands, or transfer of data via scp (even large amount of data for testing purposes because of this) works quick like expected.
    The problem is, that if I try to start app. remotely via ssh X forwarding from and to any of these (affected also bidirectional), it takes always aprox. 2 minutes to start the app.
    Afterwards, it works fast and fine.
    Doesn't change anything, whether the X server is running on the server's side or not.
    Have been testing it with some lightweight apps too, but makes no difference if it's e.g. mousepad, gedit, thunderbird, always the same 2 min. delay at their start.
    Also, some time ago, I had an older (more than 10 years) laptop, also with Arch installed, using LXDE, and connected via wifi to this same router, which worked perfectly without any delay. Also the same time ago, I was yet running Ubuntu on the home desktop, when I installed Arch to the virtualbox mentioned in point 2, and the problem was already present on the virtual pc, but not on the Ubuntu or the older laptop with Arch I had before.
    Later, when I switched home desktop to Arch (or I got new laptop in the work), the issue appeared instantly on the new Arch installations.
    The sshd configuration is the basic from the package, with X forwarding enabled of course, thus no strange changes of mine.
    I monitored the ssh communications with tcpdump, not to read the encrypted data itself , but to see whether the data is flowing, and there are flow outages (absolute quiet except of below mentioned exceptions) in the mentioned 2 minutes duration till app. startup:
    - after ssh authentication, there is about 1 minute silence, when after this 1st minute some few data is flowing
    - next, there is another 1 minute silence, after which the app. finally starts
    I've also gathered ssh debugging informations, from both, server (where I'm connecting and trying to start app. remotely) and client, with description when waiting has been detected.

    Any ideas pls?
    thx in advance.

    Have finally found a solution for this problem: http://serverfault.com/questions/490352 … w-to-start
    Now the applications do start immediately via SSH X11 forwarding as expected.
    The following three lines helped:
    ip6tables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
    ip6tables -A OUTPUT -o lo -j ACCEPT
    ip6tables -A FORWARD -i lo -o lo -j ACCEPT
    While until now, all ip6 traffic has been forbidden (to drop all ip6 traffic) at the start of the system of course.
    Nevertheless, I don't understand it, why the ip6 localhost has to be granted this way even if the /etc/ssh/sshd_config is configured for ip4 only "AddressFamily inet"?
    I thought, that this way the sshd will be using ip4 protocol only (including for the X11 forwarding), then why does it still need the ip6?

  • What do I need to start developing apps?

    Hello good people of the internet! I have a question about how I would start to develop apps for iOS, so I decided to come to the source.
    Here's my backround. I grew up with PC's and I love tinkering with things. I'm a PC gamer who loves to mod games and screw around with those kind of things. I'm a college student studying Aerospace Engineering, but I have pretty much no coding background. I have a PC laptop (2 year old Toshiba Qosmio), an iPhone 4s (in the shop because the battery's rusted), and an iPad Air. I am eager to learn to make iOS app because it is a skill that particularly interests me and it looks like fun.
    My question is, what do I need to do to start developing apps. I know I need a Mac, so what Macs have enough horsepower to develop apps? What coding language(s) do I have to learn? Where can I learn said coding language(s)? Where do I get the app development software, and how much does it cost? How do I get my finished apps onto the App Store?
    I thank the good people of this forum who have taken the time to view my question, and I give even more thanks to those who respond.
    Grazie mille!
    -Matt

  • Which webstart version is starting my app ?? [confused...]

    I'm a bit confused, but maybe someone can help me out.
    This is the situation:
    -> Installed on my Windows machine:
    * JRE 1.5.0 (of JDK, that's the same)
    * also a JRE 1.4.2_07
    * a firewall
    * IE or firefox browser (with mime-type "application/x-javajnlp-file" mapped correctly).
    -> a webapp on some (web)server (also with mime-type correctly configured). The webapp contains the necessary resources (jars, jnlp file).
    -> here's the jnlp file:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <jnlp spec="1.0+" codebase="http://server1/someapp" href="someapp.jnlp">
    <information>
    <title>Some App</title>
    <vendor>Sun Microsystems, Inc.</vendor>
    <offline-allowed/>
    </information>
    <resources>
    <jar href="app1.jar"/>
    <j2se version="1.4.2*" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se"/>
    </resources>
    <application-desc main-class="myapp"/>
    </jnlp>
    -> while starting the app, i notice that, i guess the 1.5 java webstart engine handles this app (it seems to be 1.5 stuff when i look at the layout of the dialog). BUT (!) the only traffic passing my firewall is that of the following application: .../jre1.4.2_07/bin/javaw.exe. So, th question is: "what "java web start - version" (*) is actually running my code ??
    (*) i'm not talking about the JRE. That should be 1.4.2_07, since i asked, in the jnlp, for my code to run in a 1.4.2* JRE. But there must be some javaws active, f.i. for examining my app jars on the webserver.
    P.S. when i change the <j2se version ...> into 1.5+, the request i intercept then is actually coming from jre1.5.0_05/bin/javaw.exe (which i expected in the first place).
    help.

    Yes - in this case you run webstart 1.5.0 with jre 1.4.7
    the jnlp mime type is setup by the windows installer when installing a jre that is the latest on the system. (it actually points to <windows dir>/system32/javaws.exe, which is set up as the latest version installed)

  • Shutdown screen randomly pops up when I start an app or try to charge

    At first, the wake/sleep and volume up buttons, when pressed, would seem to activate each other. So whenever I'd go to turn the volume up my ipod would go into sleep mode and whenever I'd try to put the ipod into sleep mode the volume would get turned up. Very annoying and frustrating! Over time that problem subsided and I haven't experienced that problem in a long time, but every since then, whenever I start an app I've downloaded or plug the ipod in to charge, the shut down screen randomly pops up! Other than these rather annoying "glitches", my ipod has been working fine. I was thinking of waiting for the next software update before I send it in for repairs to see if that might fix the problem because I really do depend on my ipod in my day-to-day life. So I guess I have a few questions:
    Has anyone else experienced theese problems?
    Does anyone know whats going on with my ipod?
    When is the next software update after 2.2 going to be available?

    Hi,
    Do you have a protective case on the iPod touch? If you do, try testing without the case.
    Does the iPod have any signs of accidental damage or abuse?
    Try resetting the iPod by holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple logo as described here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305743
    If the issue persists, try restoring the iPod touch. This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414 will walk you through the restore process.
    If the issue is not resolved by restoring the iPod, make a reservation with a Genius or call AppleCare.

    Lyall,
    You are corect that you only need the compiled TUXCONFIG file on the
    master machine, the boot process will propagate it to the other machines.
    I am unclear as to what your problem is now, where is the boot failing?
    Are there any errors in the ULOG file on the master machine, or the
    other machine?
    The tlisten process must be started manually (or via UNIX startup
    scripts) the tmboot brings up application servers. This application
    boot process that may require the tlisten to be running in advance.
    There is no way that the boot process "thinks it is starting the tlisten"
    Please post some more information about what your current problem is!

    I am still having difficulty. (Linux unix in case you are wondering)
    The admin console thinks it is ok starting the master (cos it thinks it is starting
    the tlisten process when I know one is already running)
    [tuxadm@PACEMid1 poc]$ ps -fae | grep tlisten
    tuxadm 14653 1 0 18:10 pts/10 00:00:00 tlisten -l //PACEMid1:12344
    tuxadm 14799 11238 0 18:29 pts/10 00:00:00 grep tlisten
    [tuxadm@PACEMid1 poc]$
    It also thinks that it is not running on the second machine and so, fails to start
    up the second machine. I know the tlisten is running on the second machine.
    [tuxadm@PACEMid2 poc]$ ps -afe | grep tlisten
    tuxadm 2891 1 0 08:51 pts/8 00:00:00 tlisten -l //PACEMid2:12344
    tuxadm 2954 1111 0 09:04 pts/8 00:00:00 grep tlisten
    [tuxadm@PACEMid2 poc]$
    The admin console shows the full configuration (wonderful stuff really)
    My config file has been updated now that I understand the difference between NADDR
    and NLSADDR (maybe some synonyms in these config files that are more intuitive
    would be helpful!)
    I have only shown what I understand to be the relevant networking entries here.

    I seem to be in control of the master machine by default since it gives the impression
    it is starting it's own tlisten process (which I am unable to find).
    I am not in control of the second machine.
    I have compiled the Config file on the master machine only (it does not exist
    on the second machine), I gather that it will be replicated to the second machine.

    Starting regular apps like google chrome is taking a lot longer. Why is this happening?

    Hey judybh,
    Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like apps are slow to load or the Mac itself is slow. There are a number of potential causes that you can check by following this article.

  • Unable to start essbase app

    Hi,
    I'm having problems starting an essbase application. all the services are running, everything looks ok. But when trying to start the app or any of the databases of that app it gives an error ' unable to load database'
    Version is 11.1.1.1 and it's on unix
    Any help will be verymuch appreciated

    Hi,
    Can you start other applications, if so then you might have an orphaned esssvr process.
    If all the apps are stopped and you see a esssvr process running you will need to kill it.
    Cheers

    I updated to ios7 on my iphone 4 and now cant install apps and one app says waiting for 2 days now. Also it started ading apps from my wife's phone onto my phone even though we have separate apple ids.

    We do not share an apple ID and her phone is now logged in with her account and I have since backed it up on itunes under her account as well. I have turned off automatic downloads on her phone but they still keep downloading. I delete one app and then another one just appears on the phone.

  • This is a weird start to my question; but i went to a music festival today and I was in a mosh pit and it was hot, and my iPhone 4 turned off and I was wondering weather it was from the heat or something else? And what I could do to fix it? Thankyou :)

  • Error when starting DPS App Builder - Application not found

    WTF folks.
    This morning I open my document (CS5) and it says I have to update my folio tools (needless to say i hate it to be forced to do an update before I can start working).
    Well, I do an update, both tools (Folio Builder and Producer Tools).
    Now there seem to be some changes, I cant refresh my folio via menu anymore. When choosing the new "build app"-option I get an error :
    "An error occured while starting DPS App Builder. The DPS App-Builder Application was not found" (translated).
    German original version: "Beim Starten von DPS App Builder ist ein Fehler aufgetreten. Die DPS App Builder-Anwendung wurde nicht gefunden."
    Any Solutions? Where to get the mysterious "App-Builder Application?"
    edit: refresh is now only possible inside the folio it seems.

    App Builder is nothing but a new name to Viewer Builder. Download it from DPS Dashbaord.

  • "Couldn't start this app" error when trying to open Action Items and any other built-in apps

    Hi all,
    When I try to open the Action Items app within an email in OWA, I get the error seen in the screenshot. In Outlook 2013, the frame comes up with a 404 error.
    Third party apps load fine.
    This is a new install of Exchange 2013 Enterprise with CU2. Everything else seems to be working fine. I have tried rebooting the server and disabling and re-enabling the apps with no luck. Can't seem to find anything in the Event Log about it.
    Any ideas why this would happen and how to fix it?
    "Something went wrong and we couldn't start this app"

    Hi,
    Could you please check the IIS log and see what’s the error code?
    Try using the administrator account to log in the Outlook and see if he can see the apps successfully.
    Thanks,
    Simon

  • Starting random apps and screen flicker when scrolling

    My Touch 2G suddenly started to launch random apps without me touching the screen. Besides starting random apps the screen flickers when scrolling. Any body have experienced the same? It started about 1 month ago and I have always taken good care of it. I have tried every possible thing I can think of when it comes to software. Full restore, jailbreak, full restore, back to factory, back to earlier versions of IOS, but no luck. It is pretty persistent. I am sure it is hardware related and don't mind paying to have it fixed. I tried two repairshops already and they  were not able to recover the reason for the malfunction.  I wonder whether there is anybody who has experienced the same or even knows what is wrong?

    Hey Kimwaldal,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Sounds like the devices are opening things on their own. You may want to follow this article to make sure the screens are working correctly.

  • Two app questions

    Ok all, I have two app questions.
    1. Ever since the IOS 5.1 update, some streams on Tune In Radio Pro do not play in stereo and I can't find a way to fix it! I've tried turning mono audio on and off, turning AAC streams on and off, and still nothing. Could it be that my phone is complaining that it doesn't have a sim card? That's my only theory at this point. I thought it had something to do with the stream bitrate and I have been working with the TuneIn support to try and get to the bottom of this, but nothing has worked. I thought it was just the 32 kbps and 48 kbps aac streams affected, but it seems to be all on some streaming providers. Here's some of the stations I've logged mono audio on, in Spokane, KZZU and KZBD, in Saint Lewis, WARH, in DC WRQX, in New York WPLJ, in Portland Maine WHOM, in Philidelphia WBEN, and in Yakima KFFM. These are all 32 or 48 kbps streams. I can't get stereo on KQMV or KLCK in Seattle, haven't tried KLCK actually as I listen to that enough over the air, I am just basing that one on how TuneIn is acting. I can also get KFFM in stereo via Radio Pup, so in that instance, it seems to be just a TuneIn issue. WBEN is also on IHeart Radio and does not come in in stereo on either app. I didn't mention KFAT in Ankorage, AK because they are with one of the providers that doesn't seem to have a stereo aac stream on TuneIn at all. Other stations in this category dealing with two providers here, WCLI in Dayton, OH, WJDQ Meridian MS, KMGL Oklahoma City, KLMY in Long Beach WA, not listed in a market on TuneIn, KRXY in Shelton also not listed under a city, and I feel like I am forgetting a few but that's most of them. If I didn't mention it before, KQMV and KLCK have 64 kbps aac streams as well as 32 kbps aac streams, problem only occurs on 32 kbps streams there. Any solution?
    2. Now this next question will go really fast. TuneIn must use some kind of audio capturing software to record, but you can only do that with TuneIn stations. Is there a way to do this with other apps, such as the hd radio that works with the Ibiquity app in the app store?

    Well, here's the skinny then. If it's an isolated issue and you cannot provide a way of replicating the problem, the Apple does not consider it an OS X problem. Rather it's a problem with the third-party software. Given what you have reported I'd tend to agree with that viewpoint.
    There are some third-party utilities that enable audio capture from applications that don't support it themselves. The best of them is Audio Hijack Pro 2.10.3. I highly recommend it.
    If you are interested in Internet radio then you should check out Radium 2.8.3 and/or World Radio 2.0 and/or Radioshift 1.6.7. The last one will record its audio.
